This study investigated the specific airflow dynamic properties of capture systems fitted to automated metal cutting tables. Tests were conducted on a multizone ventilated table equipped with suction slots incorporated into the side panels of the dross box. They led to a better understanding of the detailed flow structure near the table and, in particular, characterized the airflows through the various passages between the compartment under suction and the rest of the workshop; these airflows counteract potential pollutant leaks. The impacts of the following operating parameters on the distribution of air velocities induced by the ventilation were studied: dimensions and position of the plate to be cut on the supporting table; air extracted through slots on one or two sides; position of cutting point with respect to table length; presence of peripheral protective screens; and the existence of drafts in the workshop.
