Based on the IR spectra of the petroleum ether extract, ethyl ether extract and water extract of Caulis Mahoniae and six species of medicinal plants of the same genus, it has been found out that the differences of chemical constituents among the samples can be reflected by the changes of IR spectra. This method can be used as a rapid and exact means to search unknown species with same chemical constituents in the same genus and family.

The content changes of 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde(5-HMF), a new compound reported in the previous paper, in eight prescriptions of different composition were further determined by HPLC with a view to find the chemical dynamic changes and compatibility of medicines. The contents of 5-HMF in different combinations of Radix Ophiopogonis and Fructus Schisandrae, different boiling times and boiling frequency were examined. The results indicated that 5-HMF was produced in the boiling process of Radix Ophiopogonis and Fructus Schisandra combined. The contents of 5-HMF would increase with the increase of Radix Ophiopogonis amount, reaching the highest value after 1.5 h boiling and two times of boiling.

To clarify the material base of the distinct curative effect of Shengmaisan (SMS) compound prescription, a study was made on the dynamics of chemical constituents in the decoction prepared according to the compound prescription. From the decoction a new compound was isolated and identified by UV, IR, MS and NMR as 5-hydroxymethy-2-furaldehyde (5-HMF). The study suggests that the distinct curative effect of SMS compound prescription hinges on a material base which is different chemically from that in the other three single drugs used separately, thus presenting scientific criteria for rational compatibility and quality check in making preparations on compound prescriptions.

Passive avoidance tests have shown that Yizhi Pills (YZ) markedly improve the memory of normal mice at a dose of 100 mg/kg after oral administration for fifteen days, and significantly reverse the scopolamine, NaNO2 and EtOH-induced disruptions of memory retention in mice at doses of 100, 200, 500 mg/kg after oral administration for five days. In aged mice induced by D-galactose, YZ also significantly improve the impaired memory, increase the activity of SOD and decrease the content of MDA in brain. All these effects were observed at doses of 200, 500 mg/kg after oral administration for forty-one days. YZ significantly promote blood carbon particle clearance, enhance hemolysin antibody in immunodepressed mice induced by cyclophosphamide, and increase earswelling in immunodepressed mice induced by prednisolonum.

A new TLC method for the assay of terpene lactones in Ginkgo biloba extract and its preparations has been established by means of optimized development condition and post-chromatographic thermal fluorescence derivatization. Satisfactory results can be obtained through polynomial regression calibration. The data obtained by this method have been proved ten times higher in sensitivity than those obtained by HPLC-refracto-detector.

Six alkaloids have been isolated from the flowers of Sophora viciifolia for the first time. Based on of physico-chemical methods and spectroscopic analysis, their structures have been identified as oxymatrine, oxysophocarpine, sophocarpine, matrine, sophoramine and sophoridine.

The content of ursolic acid in Folium Ilicis Cornutae (Gouguye) gathered in different periods from Yongfeng county of Jiangxi province was determined by TLCS method. The result shows that the content appears to be low in samples gathered in April, but about the same in samples of February, June, August, October and December.

The contents of puerarin in Radix Puerariae and Yufengningxin Tablets were determined by HPLC. The average rates of recovery were 97.19% and 100.68% respectively, and RSD 1.05% and 1.31% respectively.

Baicalin in the samples was extracted with ultrasonic wave, the extract was spotted on thin-layer plates of gel GF254 and developed with the mobile phase consisting of toluene-ethylacetate-formic acid (2:3:2.2). Determinations were carried out with Shimadzu CS-930 TLC scanner with lambda s = 280 nm and lambda R = 207 nm. The linear range was 0.46-4.6 micrograms/ml. The average recovery of baicalin from the samples was 98.35%, RSD = 2.82%.

Our experiment has shown that liuwei dihuang Decoction can decrease the contents of lipid peroxide in the serum as well as lipofuscin in the liver of the older mice to the level of the younger ones, while the two compatible prescriptions derived from the decoction, "Three invigorators" and "Three purges", cannot produce the same effect. All the three forms of prescription have no action on the lipofuscin in the heart.

The contents of selenium in Liuwei Dihuang decoction (six traditional Chinese drugs and their decoction, five decoctions in different compatible ways, a complex decoction of all crude drugs) have been determined by fluorescence spectrophotometric method. The result shows that element selenium is rich in Dihuang. The dissolution ratio of selenium in decoctions of each single crude drug is about 30-40%.

In this paper elastase capacity was measured with agar radial diffusion using elastin-agar plate. There was a linear correlation between elatase capacity and diameter of agar radial diffusion. Significant inhibitory effects of Fructus Forsythiae, Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, Radix Angelicae Sinensis and Ligustrazini Hydrochloridum on elastase were observed and Fructus Forsythiae proved the most effective.
