The Japanese members of Haliplidae were reviewed and 13 species in two genera are recognized. A new species, Haliplus morii sp. nov. is described from Honshu; it is similar to Haliplus japonicus Sharp, 1873, but belongs to a different subgenus. Haliplus diruptus J. Balfour-Browne, 1946, syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of Haliplus kotoshonis Kano & Kamiya, 1931. The records of Haliplus davidi Vondel, 1991 from Japan are regarded as misidentifications of H. kotoshonis. Haliplus basinotatus latiusculus Nakane, 1985, syn. nov. is treated as a junior synonym of H. basinotatus. Haliplus angustifrons Re'gimbart, 1892 known from south and southeast Asia, is newly recorded from Japan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The genus Platycotylus Olliff, 1883 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) is recorded from Japan (Nakanoshima Island, Tokara Islands) for the first time, through the discovery of a new and remarkable species, Platycotylus merkli sp. nov., which is described herein. The male of this new species can be distinguished from all known males of other congeneric species by its long and asymmetrical epistomal horn. Although this new species is most similar to Platycotylus parvicollis (Pic, 1923), for which a male has not been examined, it can be distinguished from this species by its simple sparse pronotal punctation, smaller eyes, and acutely produced temples. The genus Nipponodrasterius Kishii, 1966 was established as a member of the subfamily Conoderinae Fleutiaux, 1919 (now tribe Oophorini Gistel, 1848; subfamily Agrypninae Candèze, 1857) based on N. alpicola. The genus was suggested to be unlikely to belong to Agrypninae because it lacks diagnostic features of the Agrypninae. However, there are no taxonomic treatments for the genus or species. Here, we review the status of the genus and species by examining the holotype of N. alpicola. Consequently, the genus was found to be a junior synonym of the genus Gamepenthes Fleutiaux, 1928 and N. alpicola was found to be a junior synonym of G. pictipennis (Lewis, 1894). The genus Pseudophanias Raffray, 1890 is discovered in Japan and Taiwan Island for the first time, with three new species: P. yaimensis Inoue, Nomura & Yin, sp. nov., P. nakanoi Inoue, Nomura & Yin, sp. nov., and P. excavatus Inoue, Nomura & Yin, sp. nov. It is the fifth tmesiphorine genus known from Japan and the first from Taiwan. The genus Chandleriella Hlaváč, 2000 is placed as a junior synonym of Pseudophanias, resulting in the following new combinations: P. termitophilus (Bryant, 1915), comb. nov., and P. yunnanicus (Yin, 2019), comb. nov. The mature larva of Cionus olivieri Rosenschoeld, 1838 is described and illustrated in detail for the first time. It is compared with those known from the same genus and other genera in the tribe Cionini and with those of the hypothesized sister tribe Mecinini in the Curculioninae. The larvae of Cionus have three distinctive diagnostic features: the reduced number of setae on the epicranium (only two or three des and one or two fs) and on the epipharyngeal lining (only two als, two ams, and no mes); i.e., distinctly fewer than the most frequent number of setae in weevils, and mandibles dentate or angulate internally near the base. If considered together with Stereonychus Suffrian, 1854, the other genus of Cionini with larvae studied in detail, it is preliminarily suggested that mature larvae of this tribe might be characterized by six main diagnostic features: (1) labial palpi one-segmented, (2) labral rods absent, (3) pedal areas swollen to form large lobes or prolegs, (4) mandible with sharp apical teeth, (5) reduced number of fs on frons, only one or two fs, and (6) reduced number of epipharyngeal setae (two or three als and two or three ams, but no mes). It was noticed that C. helleri Reitter, 1904 from Japan, a very distinct species in the genus for some characters of the adult, also possesses distinctive characters in the larva which are uncommon among known cionines. New biological data on C. olivieri with the discovery of its host plant, Verbascum songaricum (Scrophulariaceae), in central Asia are also reported. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the genus Triarthron (Coleoptera, Leiodidae, Leiodinae), only two species are known to occur in Palearctic and Nearctic regions. In this paper, a new species in Japan, Triarthron itoi Hoshina, sp. nov., is described. This brings the number of species in the genus to three. Japanese and Taiwanese species of the genus Cephalobyrrhus are revised. A new species, C. amami sp. n., is described from Amami-Ôshima, the Ryukyus, Japan. This species is clearly distinguished from the other known species by the short and pointed median lobe and long phallobase. After examining Japanese material of Ptomaphagus Hellwig from various collections, a new species is described, P. (s. str.) piccoloi sp. n., and a new subjective synonym proposed, P. (s. str.) kuntzeni Sokolowski, 1957 = P. (s. str.) amamianus Nakane, 1963, syn. n., in this paper. A detailed examination of specimens of Cryptopleurum sichuanicum Ryndevich, 2005 from high altitudes of Sichuan Province, China, revealed that the species belongs in the genus Nipponocercyon Satô, 1963 previously endemic to Japan. The species is here transferred in Nipponocercyon, and N. sichuanicus (Ryndevich, 2005), comb. n. is redescribed and compared with N. shibatai Satô, 1963. The male genitalia of N. sichuanicus is described for the first time. An adapted diagnosis of Nipponocercyon is provided, and reasons for the inclusion of N. sichuanicus into Nipponocercyon and the general distribution of the genus are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
