A new species of Hua , Hua qiannanensis sp. nov., is described from Guizhou Province, China, based on morphological and molecular evidence. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: the smooth shell, only three smaller cusps of lateral teeth on the inner side, outer marginal teeth with eight flattened and rounded denticles, an ovipositor pore in females, and BW/H ≥ 80%, B/H = 76.8-82.3%. Molecular analysis based on partial mitochondrial COI and 16S rDNA also supports the systematic position of the new taxon.

The genera Angustipes Colosi, 1922 and Latipes Colosi, 1922 were originally proposed as "groups" within the genus Vaginulus Ferrussac, 1822, and since their establishment they have been variously considered valid or invalid until they gained the ultimate status of genus. The descriptions of both genera are general and broadly inclusive, and this fact has complicated taxonomic recognition. Additionally, incomplete descriptions and difficult identification of characteristics in the name-bearing type specimens demonstrate the need to revisit the species and revise the two genera. Herein, we broaden the description of Latipes erinaceus Colosi, 1922 with respect to the circulatory system, the radula, the jaw, the position of entry of the ligation duct in the bursa copulatrix in relation to the canal of the bursa, the origin of the muscle of the penial gland, along with the morphometric characteristics of the phallus, the penial gland, the pedal gland, and the bursa copulatrix. We also propose new differential diagnoses for the genera Angustipes and Latipes, limited to the essential characteristics that enable taxonomic recognition. Hence, we propose the assignment of the species L. erinaceus, Latipes rosilus (Thiele, 1927), Latipes ribeirensis (Thiele, 1927), and Latipes absumptus (Colosi, 1921) to the genus Angustipes , based on the presence of morphological characteristics attributable to this genus, such as the phallus being short and conical; the bursa copulatrix being sessile or short, and lacking a head; the ligation duct inserted near the canal of the bursa; as well as on the similarity in phallus morphology with Angustipes difficilis Colosi, 1922, the type species of this genus., (© 2019 Zoological Society of Japan.)

A new species of pachychilid freshwater gastropod, Sulcospira hunanensis sp. nov., is described from Hunan Province, China, based on morphological and molecular evidence. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters, including elongated shell with eight to nine whorls, spiral whorls with ribs, and stomach with outer and inner crescentic pads not connected to each other. Sulcospira hunanensis sp. nov. is the first confirmed report of this genus from Hunan Province, China. It is anticipated that further species will be found in this region, which currently remain unknown. Furthermore, based on morphological and molecular evidence, this study is the first record of Sulcospira tonkiniana in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, China, with Sulcospira krempfi supported as a synonym of Sulcospira tonkiniana.

Terrestrial pulmonates can form odor-aversion memories once a food odor is presented in combination with an aversive stimulus. Most of the olfactory information ascends via a tentacular ganglion located in the tip of the two pairs of tentacles, and is then transmitted to the higher olfactory center, the procerebrum. The procerebrum is the locus of memory storage and has been shown to be necessary for odor-aversion learning. However, it is unknown whether the procerebrum is the sole locus in which the memory engram resides. By exploiting the regenerative ability of tentacles, here we investigated whether tentacles function merely in transmitting olfactory information to the procerebrum, or constitute a part of the memory engram. We showed that after removal of the tentacles used during memory acquisition, slugs were unable to retrieve the memory, even if these tentacles were regenerated sufficiently to subserve memory function. Our results support the view that tentacles are more than conduits of odor information; they also participate in the formation of the memory engram.

The marine gastropod Onchidium has a multiple photoreceptive system consisting of stalk eyes, dorsal eyes, photosensitive neurons, and extraocular dermal photoreceptor cells (DPCs). The DPCs were widespread all over the dorsal mantle and distributed singly or in groups in the dermis, but were not discernible by the naked eye. The DPC was oval in shape and large in size, and characterized by features specific to gastropod photoreceptor cells such as massive microvilli, photic vesicles, and a depolarized response. DPC-17, one of a group of 19 DPCs, was examined on serial semi-thin sections of 0.4 µm in thickness with a high-voltage transmission electron microscope (HVTEM). The axon emerged specifically from the lateral side between the distal microvillous portion and proximal cytoplasm, travelled through the connective tissue, and joined a small nerve bundle (NB). Two types of supportive cells were found along the length of the axon. The first type was a covering cell (CC) surrounding the surface of the DPC body and continuing onward to the axon sheath. DPC-17 was covered by 11 CCs, while the larger DPC-6 was only covered by four CCs. The second type was a sheath cell (ShC) wrapping the surface of the small NB where the axon of the DPC merged with undefined nerve fibers. The axon extending directly from DPC-17 was reconstructed three-dimensionally (3D) using DeltaViewer software. The 3D-reconstructed image of the sheath of the axon and the CC demonstrated the continuity between the two structures, especially when the image was rotated using DeltaViewer.

We describe the morphology and innervation of the midgut and hindgut of the giant land snail Megalobulimus abbreviatus for the first time. The midgut (stomach and intestine) and hindgut (rectum and anus) are innervated by the subesophageal ganglia, through the gastrointestinal branch (originated from the visceral nerve) and the rectum-anal nerve, respectively. Backfilling through these nerves revealed neuronal bodies, mainly in the right parietal and visceral ganglia. The enteric plexuses of the midgut and hindgut are formed by extensive axonal networks and several neuronal somata arranged in clusters or as isolated cells. The gastrointestinal branch and the rectum-anal nerve directly innervate the enteric plexuses of the intestine and the hindgut, respectively. However, the outer wall of the stomach has a stomatogastric nervous system, which consists of four ganglia: stomatogastric, gastric, cardic, and pyloric. Fibers of the gastrointestinal branch project to these ganglia. Anterograde tracing from stomatogastric system ganglia revealed that the enteric plexus of the stomach is innervated only by these peripheral ganglia. Anterograde tracing of the gastrointestinal branch did not result in labeling in the enteric plexus of the stomach. Therefore, the midgut and hindgut of M. abbreviatus is controlled by an intrinsic innervation, constituted by the submucous and myenteric plexuses, which are innervated directly by neurons from the subesophageal ganglia or indirectly via the stomatogastric nervous system (for the stomach).

Cellana nigrolineata is amongst the most common and largest patellogastropod limpets in Japan, and has two color morphs. Analyses of anatomical and morphological characters, shell structure, and mitochondrial COI data (658bp) of these color morphs suggested that they represent intraspecific genetic variation. Molecular analysis demonstrated that the species can be subdivided into three genetically distinct groups: (Clade 1) Honshu, Shikoku to Eastern Kyushu, (Clade 2) Western Kyushu and (Clade 3) Southern Kyushu. Clade 1 and Clade 2 + 3 are distributed on the coastlines adjacent to two warm-water currents, the Kuroshio and Tsushima Currents, respectively. The southern population (Clade 3) is currently isolated by inhospitable sandy shores. The subdivision of these groups likely dates from the glacial period of Plio-Pleistocene time.

We examined whether gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-like peptides are present in the neural ganglia of the gastropod Pacific abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography (rpHPLC) combined with time-resolved fluoroimmunoassay (TR-FIA) analysis and by immunohistochemistry. Cerebral ganglion extracts showed a similar retention time to lamprey GnRH-II (lGnRH-II) in rpHPLC combined with TR-FIA analysis. GnRH-like-immunoreactive (ir) cell bodies (which reacted with a mouse monoclonal antibody raised against the common amino acid sequence of vertebrate GnRH) were detected in the peripheral region of the cerebral ganglion, and they were observed to send fibers into the neuropil. GnRH-like-ir fibers were also detected in the neuropil of the pedal ganglion, the visceral nerve, and the nerve originating from the pedal ganglion. Chicken GnRH-II (cGnRH-II)-like-ir fibers (which reacted with a rabbit polyclonal antibody raised against cGnRH-II) were also observed in the neuropil of the cerebral ganglion. GnRH-like-ir fibers and cGnRH-II-like-ir fibers were distinguishable in the neuropil of the cerebral ganglion by double-staining immunohistochemistry. These results suggest that multiple GnRH-like peptides exist in the neural ganglia of the Pacific abalone.

The sacoglossan Plakobranchus ocellatus feeds by sucking the cytoplasmic contents from algae and retains intact algal chloroplasts within the cells of the digestive gland. Morphology of the entire digestive system of this species was firstly described by means of a combination of histology and electron microscopy (both SEM and TEM). The short alimentary canal is confined to the head, and the anus opens at the anterior right corner of the pericardial swelling, as is the case in many non-shelled sacoglossans. The alimentary canal of the specimens examined rarely contained ingesta, suggesting that the retained chloroplasts provide sufficient nourishment to the sacoglossan hosts and that sea slugs with empty stomachs survive well in the field. The digestive gland, with the retained chloroplasts, branches from the stomach and is sparsely distributed throughout the body, including the head region, but is aggregated mainly in the dorsal lamellae. Chloroplasts were occasionally found in the epithelial cells in the transitional region from the stomach wall to the digestive gland, which may be a site at which chloroplasts are incorporated into the animal cells by endocytosis. Numerous microvilli filling the lumen of the digestive gland suggest that molecules are actively transferred within the gland. The sea slug thus apparently provides a favorable environment to support the long-term retention and function of chloroplasts.
