Psalms 93-100 are almost generally considered an individual cycle of “YHWH King-psalms.” Here it is argued that Ps 100 is the concluding composition of a cycle consisting of eleven psalms which starts at Ps 90. This major cycle is composed of two sub-cycles of five psalms, Pss 90-94 and Pss 96-100, which frame a pivotal composition of eleven poetic lines, Ps 95. The rhetorical design of the main cycle is determined by content and several formal features. This paper is written from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics (Halliday 1978). In this perspective, a text is a semantic unit that has a particular function and is related to its social system via its context of situation and of culture (Eggins 1994; Halliday and Hasan 1985). These inherent properties of a text hold true for a translated text as well. Since translation is an act of communication, priority is given to functional equivalence (Waard and Nida 1986) and norms (Toury 1995). The aim of this paper is to propose an integrated approach – an approach that combines linguistic and nonlinguistic resources – to cohesion and coherence in interlingual subtitling since this has not yet been done in translation studies. Thus, the paper is purely theoretical in nature. It is divided into four sections. The first section is an introduction to the notions of cohesion and coherence. The second section discusses current theories of cohesion and coherence. The third section reviews various approaches to these notions. In the final section, an integrated approach is proposed as a viable approach to cohesion and coherence in interlingual subtitling. Advantages and implications of this integrated approach are highlighted for further research.

Towards a coherent view of language and text practice The aim of this article is to investigate different possibilities by which generic principles underlying activities associated with the language profession are explored so as to extract uniform fundamentals inherent to all these activities. The following issues are attended to: • An exploration of the underlying historic principles of rhetoric and argumentation in search of the founding principles of current text and language practice. • An investigation of the communication models of Sebeok and Jakobson, as well as of Jakobson’s threefold distinction (intralingual, interlingual and intersemiotic translation) as a heuristic basis in the quest for a universal definition and delineation of activities related to text and language practice. The article concludes with the view that, despite the fact that more issues need to be clarified, it seems as if sufficient coherence could be located in the underlying principles of all activities related to language practice, thus enabling scholars and practitioners to view language and text practice as a single field.

Recent research has demonstrated that children are sensitive to the underlying causal structureof the world and seek to form new causal representations at a much earlier age than hadpreviously been supposed. Modern scientific understanding of the evolution of life conflictswith the biblical representation of earth as the centre of the world, and of human beings as theimago Dei. Consequently, young children frequently experience cognitive dissonance whenexposed to biblical texts. Two previous pilot studies utilising specifically designed illustratedbooklets demonstrated that children respond more readily to a text that is relevant to their owncultural context. This article tests the possibility of presenting a universally relevant biblicaltext (Lk 11:2b�4) to young children in a form that does not conflict with modern science andtakes aspects of recent research on child psychology into account.Intradisciplinary and/or interdisciplinary implications: In our postmodern culturalcontext children tend to experience cognitive dissonance when exposed to biblical texts,and consequently lose interest. This article proposes that by presenting the biblical contentin accordance with Relevance Theory, and in coherence with recent scientific explanatorytheories, the interest of the children may be sustained.

Dwarf mongooses and the meaning of Golgotha? Some theological and ecological perspectivesDuring the previous eight years we have taken notice of growing theological reflection on the ecological meaning of God, creation and re-creation. It seems that an holistic view of God, man and environment in a balanced coherence leads to a level-headed environment ethics. In this contribution the question is discussed whether Christianity with its exclusive views on man have not contributed to the harmful affliction of the ecological consciousness by subordinating the place and meaning of creation to salvation.

Multidimensionality and the multicultural situation Most societies and social institutions are currently characterised by the presence of a multitude of cultures which is an indication of a multicultural situation. Two opposite reductionist proposals for dealing with this situation are those of homogenisers/ universalists and fragmentists/particularists. There is also a dualistic in-between group. The question of this article has two sides: diagnostically it asks about the nature of the reductionism of the three groups. Therapeutically the question is about the conditions for overcoming this reductionism. Diagnostically it is argued that the reductionists deal in a one-sided way with two sets of abstractions of the multicultural situation. More precisely: they do not succeed in holding simultaneously onto important dimensions like coherence and diversity, as well as universality and particularity. Therapeutically it is argued that the latter dimensions of the multicultural situation must be mutually engaged in order for them to empower one another. It is proposed that this can be accomplished by a clear distinction between universal types like culture, justice, morality and so on, and also between these types and their particular manifestations. Furthermore, reductionisms as well as the disengagements of dualism can be avoided if the relationprinciples of parataxis, complementarity and acculturation are adhered to.

Studying logical thinking requires a more than logical diversity within creation. As a consequence, an answer has to be given to the issue regarding the cohering diversity given in reality. All monistic -isms should be seen as attempts to give a negative answer to this question. The legacy of Reformational philosophy, however, does make it possible to address these issues with the aid of its theory of inter-modal coherences. This theory is articulated in terms of retrocipatory and anticipatory moments of coherence (called analogies ). It enables one to come up with an evaluation evincing both a sense of critique and a sense of solidarity with what is called - in certain contexts of the philosophy of science - "epistemic values ”, In addition it provides one with a method to analyze the nature and scope of fundamental logical principles - viewed as modal analogies which at the lawside of the analytical aspect o f reality refer to other aspects of reality. In particular - against the background of certain starting points in Greek thought - a closer account is given of the controversial status o f the principle o f the excluded middle. In conclusion - with reference to particular examples - attention is given to various ways of exercising critique.

The autobiographical manner of presentation of Maarten 't Hart’s stories has the consequence that the narrative distance is particularly small - so that the effect on the reader is greater, and he is strongly addressed by the message of each story. This gives rise to the fact that the relevant stories can be evaluated not only on the bais of the literary aesthetic qualities, but also on the basis of lifeview. The three stories, De zaterdagvliegers, Ouderlingenbezoek and De wine nacht consistently reveal a sustained line of emotional tension, and style and structural means are well applied to support the thematic concerns. In De witte nacht especially an exceptional measure of textural density is obtained and the story reveals a close coherence. In the ethical sense the existential sense of life which is revealed by the stories as well as the one-sided characterisation of the representatives of the Christian faith is obtrusive. These two characteristics of his work reveal aparticular awareness of the spirit of the time in which ’t Hart is caught and explains to some extent why he is one of the most widely-read Dutch authors since 1945.

Earthly reality and its substance in God: An attempt of reinterpreting the transcendental metaphysics in the theology of revelation. The revelation of God in Christ as means of trust in a human world In an article written in the German language, the author strives to conceive a coherence of being of reality. He focuses his attempts on the revelation in Christ, thereby making the crisis of ecology and stress tolerable, following a critical assessment of the scholastic metaphysics of being, Mildenberger seeks the solution in the time of Christ. This leads him to interpret the present distress as being ontologically integrated with the future salvation. Man becomes part hereof by means of God's Word and Sacrament and finds the essence of reality rather in the good experienced by him.

The creation as an analogy: An assessment of the doctrine of creation of Karl Barth in the light of the appeal of the ecological crisis In a comprehensive article in Afrikaans, the author points out that the problem of the relation between man and nature has become eminent as a result of the ecological crisis. The doctrine of creation as offered by Barth, does to a certain extent, present a coherence of being amongst creatures, but is nontheless not accepted. The main reason for this is that his ontological principle of covenant imputes a docetic character to the creation. This is ascribed to the fact that Barth operated with a canon behind the canon. The author concludes his article by outlining some distinctive features of a theologia naturae.
