[Objective] SWAT is a model widely used to simulate various processes including hydrological processes and crop growth at various scales. This paper reviews its application and development from 1994 to 2022. [Method] The analysis is based on published papers that have been indexed by the Web of Science (WOS). Three bibliometric tools, VOSviewer, CiteSpace and Biblioshiny were used in econometric analysis of the literature. The levels of attention, knowledge and research frontiers in SWAT application and development were analyzed based on the number of published papers, publishing journals, affiliated institutions, paper citation, keywords and research topics. [Result] ① A total of 3 496 papers related to SWAT were published from 1994 to 2022. After 2006, the number of published papers involving SWAT increased rapidly. Since 2008, the number of SWAT papers published by Chinese researchers has grown rapidly, surpassing the United States in 2019 and becoming the lead country in publishing SWAT papers. ② The journals that publish SWAT papers most are "Journal of Hydrology", "Hydrological Processes" and "Water ". Non-Chinese authors who published most SWAT papers are Srinivasan R and Arnold J, both from the United States. Chinese authors who published most SWAT papers are Shen Zhenyao, Chen Lei and Ouyang Wei. ③ Beijing Normal University, the University of Texas, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hohai University, Wuhan University are the institutions that contributed most SWAT papers. Cooperation between countries and research institutions has promoted globalization and development of SWAT. ④ The application of SWAT is mainly in water resources, environmental science, and ecology. 5 The hotspots in SWAT are runoff simulation, assessment of the impact of land use and climate change on hydrological processes, soil erosion, pollution load. [Conclusion] SWAT has been widely used in different areas but its practical application still has some challenges. These include parameter calibrations and the associated uncertainties, model construction for different watersheds as well as the influence of different factors, impact of climate change and human activities. [Objective] Tiger nut is a cash crop in southern Xinjiang and its production relies on irrigation. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the effect of irrigation amounts on physiological traits, yield, and water use efficiency of different varieties of tiger nuts. [Method] The experiment studied two varieties: the Henan Round Grain (HY) and the Inner Mongolia Round Grain (NY), each irrigated by 18 mm (W1), 27 mm (W2), 36 mm (W3), and 45 mm (W4) of water, respectively. In each treatment, we measured the changes in soil water storage, plant height, tiller numbers, photosynthetic traits, yield, water consumption, and water use efficiency of the plants at different growing stages. [Result] Soil water storage and water consumption of both varieties increased with irrigation amount. Compared to W1, W4 increased average soil water storage and water consumption of the plants by 24.84% and 60.57% for the HY, and 18.46% and 55.61% for the NY, respectively. The plant height, tiller numbers, net photosynthesis (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs), transpiration rate (Tr) and the yield of HY increased with irrigation amount (P<0.05), peaking in W2 with increases of 24.60%, 15.11%, 28.14%, 34.86%, 40.49% and 13.92% compared to W1. Intercellular carbon content (Ci) decreased with increasing irrigation amount. With the increase in irrigation amount, the plant height, tiller numbers, Pn, Gs, Tr, and the yield of NY all increased first followed by a decline; their associated values in W2 were 26.07%, 20.26%, 19.69%, 38.38%, 44.92% and 20.83% higher than those in W1. On average, Ci decreased with irrigation amount, being lowest in W2. Water use efficiency and irrigation water use efficiency of both varieties decreased with irrigation amount. Principal component analysis showed the net photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency can be used as indicators for variety selection. [Conclusion] The optimal irrigation amounts for the varieties HY and NY are 45 mm and 27 mm respectively, which can promote healthy growth, improve yields, and enhance water use efficiency of the plants. [Objective] Soil contamination by cadmium (Cd) is a problem for agriculture production in many countries. One remediation method is to improve the tolerance of crops to Cd. In this paper, we investigate the tolerance of the seedlings of different pumpkin varieties to Cd contamination and Cd accumulation in the plants. [Method] The experiment compared seven pumpkin varieties: 360-3x041-1, Yanbian-4xLingchuanc1, Yanbian-3x360-3, Yanbian- 2x041-1, Hetou a2x360-3, Yanbian-3xLingchuan c1, and Hetou a2x041-1. They were all grown in pots repacked with soils contaminated by Cd at concentration of 0, 8 and 16 mg/L, respectively. During the experiment, we measured the growth, physiological traits of the plants, as well as Cd accumulation in the plants. [Result] ① Compared to the control without Cd contamination, Cd stress significantly reduced plant height, dry and fresh mass of the Yanbian-3xLingchuan c1 and Hetou a2x041-1 varieties, but had no significant impact on the 360-3x041-1 variety. ② Regardless of Cd stress levels, the 360-3x041-1 had the highest activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT), and the lowest electrical conductivity. ③ The Cd content in the above-ground part of 360-3x041-1 and Yanbian-4xLingchuan c1 was significantly lower than that in other varieties; their associated Cd transfer coefficient was small and the Cd accumulation was low. ④ Comprehensive analysis showed that in soil contaminated by Cd at concentration of 8 mg/L, the tolerance of the seven varieties to Cd was ranked in the order of 360-3x041-1>Yanbian-4xLingchuanc1>Yanbian-3x360-3>Yanbian-2x041-1>Hetou a2x360-3>Yanbian-3xLingchuan c1>Hetou a2x041-1. In soil contaminated by Cd at concentration of 16 mg/L, their tolerance to Cd was ranked in the order of 360-3x041-1>Yanbian-4xLingchuan c1>Yanbian-3x360-3>Hetou a2x360-3>Yanbian-3xLingchuan c1>Yanbian-2x041-1>Hetou a2x041-1. [Conclusion] Comprehensive analysis shows that the varieties 360-3x041-1, Yanbian-4xLingchuan c1 and Yanbian-3x360-3 were more tolerant to Cd stress, especially 360-3x041-1 which had the lowest cadmium transfer coefficient and can healthily grow in Cd contaminated soils. [Objective] The Grand Canal is a complex hydraulic project in the eastern China. This paper studies the flooding and its detrimental impacts in the lowland areas of the canal. [Method] The research was conducted in the Pichang-Tanxin Plain, using multi-source remote sensing data and ground surveys to analyze flooding events. We calculated the normalized difference water body index (NDWI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) before and after flooding to assess flood severity, impact on crop growth, as well as the efficacy of hydraulic facilities in mitigating flooding effects. [Result] The NDVI difference between 2004 and 2005 for crops in flooded and non-flooded areas was 0.5 and 0.25, respectively, indicating floodings detrimentally affected crop growth and development. NDWI analysis from 2003 to 2017 demonstrated that the Taierzhuang Control Gate project mitigated flooding impacts on nearby farmlands. Flooding also affected crops in non-inundated regions, with lowland crops more adversely impacted than those outside lowlands. The hydraulic facilities significantly reduced economic losses caused by flooding. [Conclusion] Remote sensing is an effective tool for monitoring inundated areas and assessing the consequences of flooding on crops. [Objective] Soil organic carbon (SOC) is not only an indicator of soil health but also plays a crucial role in feedback interaction between global warming and carbon stock in terrestrial ecosystems. Its dynamics is modulated by a multitude of interactive abiotic and biotic factors. In this paper, we analyze the spatial distribution of SOC in the plough layer and its correlation with soil texture and other geochemical properties in the region of Zhengzhou in Henan province. [Method] Soil samples were taken from a grid network in the region. SOC, bulk density, soil texture and other geochemical properties in each soil sample were measured. The correlation between SOC and soil nutrients, including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and micronutrients in the soil, was analyzed using the GeoChemStudio software. [Result] The calcareous skeletol soil in the region has the highest SOC, reaching 2.307%. The SOC content varied from 0.1%-11.6% across the region, and was normally distributed with a mean of 1.134%. The SOC was positively correlated with N, P2O5, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Mo and B, and their associated correlation coefficients were 0.804 5, 0.223 0, 0.156 3, 0.119 1, 0.223 8, 0.263 4, 0.162 8 and 0.191 1, respectively. Negative correlations were found between SOC and K2O and pH, and their associated correlation coefficients were -0.088 8 and -0.195 7, respectively. The average SOC content in the plough layer in the region was 1.09%. Spatially, SOC was rich in Xinmi, Dengfeng and Gongyi in the southwest of the region. In terms of soil texture, SOC is higher in skeletol soil and calcareous cinnamon soil than in other soils. SOC stored in the topsoil in the whole region was 1 012.87x104 t, with 523.13x104 t stored in the cinnamon soils and calcareous cinnamon soils, accounting for 51.64% of the total topsoil SOC in the region. Objective The increase in atmospheric CO2 and the associated global warming is expected to affect plant growth and development. This paper investigates the spatiotemporal variation in vegetation phenological traits and peak NDVI of plants in Hetao Irrigation District in Inner Mongolia. [Method] The analysis was based on MOD13Q1 data from 2001 to 2021. The impact of climatic factors on spatiotemporal variation in the start of season SOS, the end of season (EOS), the length of season (LOS), the peak of season (POS), and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) of the vegetations in the region was analyzed using the two-logistic and four-parameter model. [Result] The SOS started from the end of May to the middle of June, and ended from the middle of September to the beginning of October. The annual peak LOS and POS ranged from 95 to 116 days, and from 200 to 220 days, respectively. The annual peak NDVI ranged from 0.5-0.7. Climate change delayed the onset of SOS, reduced LOS, and elevated peak NDVI. Additionally, the delayed SOS contributed to the decrease in LOS. The changes in EOS and POS with climate were consistent. SOS, EOS and POS were negatively correlated to temperature and positively correlated to precipitation. The peak NDVI was positively correlated to temperature and precipitation. [Conclusion] The vegetation phenology and peak NDVI in the Hetao Irrigation District were spatially heterogeneous, and the impact of climatic factors on them also varied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

[Objective] Non-pressurized mesh filters are often installed in front of pumps to filter sediments and debris. In this paper, we study the influence of different irrigation water sources and backwash device parameters on hydraulic performance of a new network filter. [Method] The water flow rate in the experiment ranged from 120 to 160 m3/h, and the sediment concentration in the water varied from 0.2 to 0.8 g/L. The backwash varied from 1 to 20 m3/h, and the velocity gradient in the filter box changed from 1 to 4 r/min. A multi factor dispersion analysis method was used to analyze the experimental results. [Result] ① The initial sediment concentration had minimal impact on hydraulic performance of the mesh filter, contributing only 0.010 8 to the overall effect. However, the influence of water flow duration on the initial sediment concentration was significant, exceeding 159%. ② The fourth model provided the best fit for the overall regression analysis, with a residual value of 0.804 4, significantly higher than other models; its coefficient of determination R² was 0.986 1. ③ the optimal performance was achieved when flow rate was 120.198 m3/h, velocity was 1.112 r/min, and self-cleaning flow rate was 19.934 m3/h. The associated a minimum energy loss was 16.024 kPa. [Conclusion] The model we proposed can accurately predict the impact of operation conditions and sediment concentration in the water on the performance of the non-pressurized mesh filters. [Objective] Change in soil water content is not only an indicator of water stresses used for irrigation management but also controls biogeochemical processes in soil. In this paper, we study the feasibility of using thermal infrared imaging to estimate soil moisture dynamics. [Method] The experiment was conducted in July-August 2023 in a walnut orchard in Xinjiang. Thermal infrared images of the walnut canopy were measured continuously using a thermal infrared camera. Based on the HSV color space of the images, an improved K-means segmentation algorithm was proposed to analyze the change in canopy temperature. We also measured air temperature and humidity, illuminance, wind speed, atmospheric CO2, and soil water content in the 0-80 cm soil layer, from which we proposed an inversion model to estimate soil water dynamics. [Result] The improved K-means algorithm increased the accuracy from 82.34% to 94.55%, and the errors between the canopy temperature acquired from the images and the measured canopy temperature were in the range of 0 to 1.0. The infrared imaging method was most accurate between 14:00 pm to 16:00 pm. Our results showed that the walnut roots were most active in taking up water from the 40-60 cm soil layer 50-60 cm away horizons from the tree truck. Canopy temperature, air temperature and relative humidity, and atmospheric CO2 concentration were correlated with soil water content at significant levels; they can thus be used to estimate soil water dynamics, with a coefficient of determination of R2=0.86 and p<0.01. [Conclusion] The temperature acquired from the infrared images of the walnut canopy can be used with other metrological data and atmospheric CO2 concentration to estimate soil water dynamics in the root zone of the walnut. [Objective] Brackish groundwater can be used as a complementary irrigation resource to safeguard crop production in regions lacking freshwater resources. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of the salinity of brackish water and soil water content on spatiotemporal variations in soil enzymatic activities, as well as growth and yield of cucumber. [Method] The experiment was conducted in an greenhouse, with the cucumber irrigated by brackish waters with salt concentrations of 5 (E1), 3.5 (E2), 2.5 (E3), 0.5 g/L (E4), respectively. We measured soil matric potential at the depth of 20 cm underneath the drip emitter, such that irrigation was resumed when the matric potential decreased to -15 kPa (L1), -25 kPa (L2) or -35 kPa (L3), respectively. In each treatment, we measured the spatiotemporal changes in activities of urease, alkaline phosphatase and sucrase in the soil, as well as growth and yield of the cucumber. [Result] The activities of all three enzymes decreased vertically with the soil depth and horizontally with the distance from the drip emitters. The three enzymes were most active in the top 0-20 cm soil layer, 0-15 cm away horizontally from the drip emitters. Irrigation with water at salt concentration of 0.5-2.5 g/L improved the alkaline phosphatase activity, with limited effect on the activities of urease and sucrase. Increasing water salinity to 3.5-5 g/L suppressed the activities of all three enzymes. With the decrease in soil matric potential used for irrigation control, the activity of sucrase increased steadily, while the activities of urease and alkaline phosphatase increased first followed by a decrease. Irrigation with water at salt concentration of 3.5-5 g/L significantly inhibited the growth and development of the cucumber, while reducing the soil matric potential used for irrigation control to -35 - -25 kPa improved the cucumber growth and yield. [Conclusion] Irrigating greenhouse cucumber using brackish water with salt concentration of 0.5-2.5 g/L and resuming irrigation whenever the soil matric potential at the depth of 20 cm underneath the drip emitters decreased to -35 - -25 kPa can improve cucumber production without resulting in noticeable soil quality deterioration. [Objective] Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SBG) is a Chinese medicine. This paper studies the combined effect of initial soil water content and progressive drought on physiological traits and quality of SBG. [Method] The pot experiment was conducted in a mobile water shelter. The initial soil water content in the pots were controlled at 40%, 60% and 80% of the field capacity (FC) to represent severe, moderate, and mild drought, respectively. In each treatment, we measured the biomass, photosynthetic characteristics, osmotic substances, activities of antioxidant enzymes and active ingredients of the plants. [Result] ① No significant difference in biomass accumulation was found between the treatments. ② During the stress period, baicalin content was significantly higher in the 80%FC treatment, baicalein content was significantly higher in the 40%FC treatment and the baicalin content decreased with initial soil water treatment in the order of 40%FC>60%FC>80%FC. When the soil water content was 40%FC and 60%FC, the baicalin content was 17.3% and 11.3% higher than that when soil water content was 80%FC. Change in soil water contents did not have a significant impact on baicalein content. ③ Net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance and intercellular carbon dioxide concentration all decreased as the plants grew, regardless of the soil water treatments. 8-10 d after the onset of water stress, the net photosynthetic rate did not show significant differences between the 60%FC and 80%FC treatments. ④ Under water stress, the content of malondialdehyde and proline in all treatments increased as the plants grew. The proline content was the highest in the 80%FC treatment, reaching 121.66 µg/g. ⑤ The activities of POD and CAT responded to water stress similarly, both increasing gradually as water stress persisted. The impact of soil water on activity of SOD was ranked in the order of 40%FC>60%FC>80%FC. ⑥ The active ingredients were higher in the 40%FC and 60%FC treatments. [Conclusion] Severe progressive drought with the soil water content kept at 40%FC reduced photosynthesis and increased baicalein content, osmolytes and activity of antioxidant enzymes. [Objective] Brackish waters including saline groundwater and treated wastewater have been increasingly used as a complimentary irrigation water resource in regions where freshwater is scarce. In the paper we investigate the effect of various concentrations of saltine irrigation water on photosynthetic characteristics of winter jujube. [Method] The experiment was conducted in 2020 in a jujube orchard, with the winter jujubes irrigated by mixtures of saltine groundwater and freshwater at concentrations of 1 (S1), 2 (S2), 3 (S3), 4 (S4) and 5 g/L (S5), respectively. In each treatment, we measured the spaciotemporal changes in soil water and salt, as well as the photosynthetic traits of the jujubes. [Result] Net photosynthetic rate, transpiration and stomatal conductance of the plant leaves varied with irrigation salinity nonlinearly, all peaking in S3 or S4. Compared with other treatments, S3 and S4 reduced the SPAD, maximum fluorescence and maximum quantum efficiency significantly. Compared to S1, S3 and S4 increased the apparent quantum efficiency, maximum net photosynthetic rate, light compensation point, and dark respiration rate, but reduced the light saturation point. These indicate that, although S3 and S4 reduced the range of available light intensity, they improved the physiological activity and efficient photosynthesis of the jujube leaves. [Conclusion] Irrigating the winter jujubes with saline water at concentration of 1-3 g/L during the fruit enlargement period can prevent light reaction inhibition and promote efficient photosynthesis. However, irrigation with water salinity exceeding 4 g/L led to salinity stress, thereby significantly reducing light energy utilization efficiency. [Objective] A pre-planting border irrigation in spring coupled with a drip irrigation in summer during crops growth season is an irrigation technique to reduce soil salinity and safeguard crops growth in the salt-affected soils in the Hetao Irrigation District in Inner Mongolia. This paper investigates the impact of different combinations of irrigation amounts in the dual irrigations on changes in soil water and salt, as well as the growth of sunflower. [Method] The field experiment compared two spring (S) irrigation amounts: 95 mm and 135 mm, and three summer (W) irrigation amounts: 68, 100 mm and 135 mm. In each treatment, we measured the spatiotemporal changes in soil water and salt, as well as crop growth characteristics. [Result] ① The soil water content in the S135W135 treatment was the highest among all treatments during the experimental period, with the average soil water content and saturation being 17.10% and 75.53%, respectively. The coefficient of variation of soil water content in the S95W135 treatment was 22.40%, the lowest among all treatments. ② Depending on the summer irrigation amount, the desalination rate of the 0-80 cm soil layer under S135 and S95 varied from 32.64% to 50.50% and 21.8% to 38.87%, respectively. Although the spring irrigation amounts did not significantly affect immediate post-irrigation salt content, the S135W100 and S95W135 combinations showed deeper leaching depths and higher desalination rates (40.77% and 33.37%, respectively) than other treatments. ③ Aboveground dry matter production was significantly higher in the S95W135 and S135W100 combinations than in other combinations, surpassing the S135W135 combination by 10.55% and 9.94%, respectively. The S135W100 combination achieved the highest water use efficiency at 21.59%, an increase of 13.03% compared to S135W135. [Conclusion] Reducing spring irrigation by 30% to 95 mm combined with a summer drip irrigation of 135 mm is the most efficient irrigation scheme for sunflower cultivation in the salt-affected soils in the Hetao Irrigation District. [Objective] Winter wheat in Northern China is often rotated with other crops which are expected to have a legacy effect. This paper aims to study the effect of different tillage and preceding crops on soil nutrients, yield and water use efficiency of the winter wheat. [Method] The field experiment consisted of a rotary tillage (RT) and a no-tillage (NT). The preceding crops for each tillage were corn (MW) or soybean (SW). During the experiment, we measured the changes in soil nutrients, soil water content, water and fertilizer use efficiency, and yield of the wheat. [Result] For the same preceding crop, non-tillage increased soil water content compared to rotary tillage; under the same tillage, soil water content with maize as the preceding crop was higher than that with soybean as the preceding crop. In all treatments, soil nutrients decreased with soil depth. In the 0-50 cm soil layer, NTSW increased soil organic carbon, soil total nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen by 4.14%-13.54%, 35.51%-54.44% and 55.75%-112%, respectively, compared to the RTMW. RTMW had the highest available phosphorus and potassium in the 10-50 cm soil layer. The RTSW had the highest ammonium nitrogen in the 0-50 cm soil layer, 13.39%-20.64% more than that in the RTMW. The winter wheat in NTSW had the highest spike numbers, spikelet numbers, thousand-grain weight; and its grain yield was 16.62% higher than that of RTMW. The NTSW had the highest water use efficiency, 8.67% more than that of RTMW. The NTSW had the highest nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium use efficiency. [Conclusion] The NTSW facilitated nutrient accumulation in the winter wheat field. It had the highest water and fertilizer use efficiency and increased grain yields the most as a result.
