Aneurysmal bone cyst of mastoid bone is seldom, here one case was reported. The mastoid bone of the patient presented with a baloon-like swelling full of non-coagulated blood and serous-hemorrhagic fluid. CT scan demonstrated a large expansile destructive mass located in left mastoid bone region with the thin or absent cortical bone. The MRI demonstrated T2-weighted images and clear boudary from surrounding tissue. Pathologic reported that the mastoid bone was repalcement with lacunar divided by fibro-tissue, containing numerous hemosiderin, giant cells and inflammatory cells. A surgery was performed and the patient was cured.

Objective: To study the clinical, pathologic and radiologic features of chondroblastoma occurring in sites other than epiphysis and apophysis of long bones, and to investigate possible reasons for misdiagnosis., Methods: The clinical, pathologic and radiologic data of 18 chondroblastoma cases occurring in atypical sites were collected from 5 major hospitals in Shanghai during the past 12 years. S-100 immunostaining was performed to confirm the cartilaginous differentiation of the tumor cells., Results: Chondroblastoma occurred in small bones of feet in 10 of the 18 cases (55.6%) studied, being commonest in the talus and calcaneus bones. Mean age of the patients was 27.8 years, with 55.6% over 25 years of age. Radiologic examination revealed expansive, multilocular and well-demarcated radiolucent lesions in most cases. There was local cortical destruction in 5 cases (28%) and soft tissue infiltration in 1 case. In 10 cases (55.6%), the tumor was associated with aneurismal bone cyst or simple bone cyst formation. None of the cases studied was accurately diagnosed clinically before the operation. In 2 cases, the pathology was also misdiagnosed, often being diagnosed as aneurismal bone cyst or giant cell tumor., Conclusions: Chondroblastoma occurring in atypical sites are often associated with atypical age, radiologic features and pathologic findings at presentation. Thorough understanding of the potential pitfalls is essential in order to avoid misdiagnosis.

Objective: To explore the diagnosis and treatment of maxillary aneurysmal bone cyst., Method: For 4 cases with maxillary aneurysmal bone cyst, 1 case underwent radical maxillary sinusotomy in local anaesthesia and 3 cases underwent lateral rhinotomy in general anaestesia., Result: The 4 cases were followed up for 13 months to 2 years after operation and no patient was found recurrence., Conclusion: The main treatment of aneurysmal bone cyst was radical operation, to strive for thorough treatment. Confirming and embolizing the feed artery by DSA preoperatively can reduce bleeding during operation and shorten the time of operation and general anesthesia obviously.

Objective: To determine the imaging features and useful therapeutic methods of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC)., Methods: The radiographs, CT, and MR scans of 82 cases of pathologically proved ABC were retrospectively analyzed. Post-therapeutic follow-up of 45 cases was carried out for 3 months to 24 years., Results: Plain radiographs showed eccentric expansile osteolysis in most cases. Fluid-fluid level was seen in 21/27 cases on CT scans, and calcification or ossification in 11/27 cases. MR images showed a hypointense rim in 7/7 cases, multilocular hyperintense cysts with hypointense septae on T2WI in 6/7 cases, and fluid-fluid levels in 5/7 cases., Conclusion: CT and MR scans are superior to plain radiographs in the diagnosis of ABC in the osteolytic phase and in the axial skeleton. Curettage combined with bone graft surgery is the most effective therapeutic method for ABC of the extremities. Arterial embolization with or without surgery is valuble for the treatment of ABC arising from the axial skeleton.
