Prevalence of chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is rapidly increasing and has become a global problem in modern day. Over consumption of simple, processed carbohydrate foods is considered one of the main causes of NCD in young and elderly populations. Whole grain rice is an important source of a complex carbohydrate, dietary fiber, enriched with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. However, palatability of brown rice is the key success factor among white-rice-addicted communities. In the initial phase, we successfully breed rice strains with aromatic, soft-whole grain, white rice contains high grain-Fe/Zn density and intermediate glycemic index (GI). The most successful variety was uniquely soft-textured black purple rice named Riceberry, depicting rice enriched with blueberry nutritional characteristics. Product development for fiber-rich, high antioxidant has been extremely active from academia, real sectors, and SMEs. In total, 39 patent applications (18 granted patents), 12 international publications, and 18,700 Youtubes related to Riceberry. From 2017, Riceberry has become the most popular choice for product development surpassing Thai Hommali Rice. More than 200 food and non-food products were commercialized as dairy replacement,side dishes, meals, hot beverages, bakery, and breakfast cereals. In the second phase, we successfully breed low GI rice strains named Pink+4 equipped with farmers’ preferred resistance to flash flooding, bacterial leaf blight, leaf blast, and devastating brown planthopper adapted to organic rice production. Innovative products combined of low GI rice flour with purple Riceberry have been the next trend for functional ingredients and foods. These healthy rice products have high potential globally as healthy foods, gluten-free, fiber-rich,complex carbohydrate, and nutrient-dense from sustainable organic farming.

The relationship between brown planthopper ( BPH) resistance and indica-japonica genotypes in Yunnan local rice variety resources was studied for providing a basis for future targeted genetic improvement of BPH-resistant resources. [Method] Total of 176 rice local varieties resources from 40 counties in 10 prefectures of Yunnan Province were identified by field natural identification method and lnDel molecular marker technology. The correlation between the resistance grade of BPH and the gene frequencies of indica-japonica in Yunnan rice local varieties was analyzed. [Result] The differentiation of indica-japonica was obvious in the local rice resources of Yunnan. The seven types of mdica-japonica rice types classified by the lnDel molecular index method all appeared in 176 local rice varieties in Yunnan, including 28 typical indica rice, 84 indica rice, 5 indicaclinous rice, 6 intermediate type rice, 2 japonicaclinous rice, 26 japonica rice and 25 typical japonica rice. The 45 BPH resistant rice germplasms were screened out from 176 local rice varieties in Yunnan Province through field natural identification. Among them, Annangu ( Pu ' er ) and Laolaihong ( Xishuangbanna ) showed resistance to BPH, and the other 43 resources showed moderately resistant to BPH. The further correlation analysis showed that there was a significant negative correlation between the BPH resistance grade and gene frequencies of indica type in 176 local rice varieties in Yunnan ( r = -0. 345,P <0. 01). Among the 45 resources that showed resistance to BPH, except that Nuogu ( Lincang, Fi = 0. 13) was japonica rice, the others had indica type gene frequencies > 0. 60. [Conclusion ] There was a significant negative correlation between the resistance level of BPH and the gene frequencies of indica type in Yunnan local rice varieties. Among the 45 resources,2 resources ( annangu in Pu er and laolaihong in Xishuangbanna) were resistant to BPH, which could be used as parent materials to cultivate varieties resistant to BPH and enrich germplasm resources resistant to BPH in Yunnan province. [Objectives]The aim of present study is to explore novel BPH resistance gene for breeding BPH resistance rice cultivars. [Methods]An F2：3 and a BC2F2：3 populations were constructed by crossing resistant indica cultivar ‘BP360e’ with susceptible japonica cultivar ‘02428’,respectively,and then evaluated for BPH resistance by standard seed box screening test. Further,151 polymorphic SSR markers between the parents uniformly distributed on 12 chromosomes of rice,extreme resistant and susceptible lines selected from F2：3 population were used primarily for linkage analysis,and the molecular linkage map of candidate chromosome was applied to detect the QTL conferring BPH resistance. Then,the QTL was verified by BC2F2：3 population. [Results]A major QTL on chromosome 4 was detected in the 15.3 cM interval of RM16382 and INDEL4-5,with LOD score of 14.4,explained the phenotypic variance of 56%,and subsequently designated as QBph4. Sequencing analysis showed that QBph4 probably was a novel allele for Bph3,a previously cloned BPH resistance gene. [Conclusions]The indica cultivar ‘BP360e’ had a highly resistance against BPH,which was contributed by a major QTL. The discovery of this resistance gene has laid a foundation for elucidating the underling mechanism of BPH resistance and breeding resistance rice cultivars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The resistance of several new rice varieties (combinations) to rice brown planthopper (BPH) was evaluated by using seedling screening test, honeydew measurement in different rice stages and field investigation of BPH populations in adult-plant stage. The results of seedling screening test showed that R339 (Bph14 + Bph15) was moderately resistant to BPH, while other varieties ( combinations) were susceptible to BPH. The results of honeydew measurement in different rice stages indicated that the resistance of R339 ( Bph14 + Bph15) and R838 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ) to BPH was not significantly different from that of RHT from 30 days of seedling age. The resistance of R339 ( Bph15 ), Liangfengyou339 ( Bph14 + Bph15) and Liangfengyou838 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ) to BPH was not significantly different from that of RHT from 40 days of seedling age. The resistance of R339 ( Bph14 ) and Liangfengyou339 ( Bph15 ) to BPH was not significantly different from that of RHT from 60 days of seedling age. The resistance of Liangfengyou 339 ( Bph14) to BPH was not significantly different from that of RHT in 70 days of seedling. The results of field investigation in adult-plant stage showed that when there was large population in field，the BPH populations densities in restores lines including R339 ( Bph15 ), R339 ( Bph14 + Bph15), R838 ( Bph14 + Bph15) and hybrid rice combinations including Liangfengyou339 ( Bph14 ), Liangfengyou339 ( Bph15 ), Liangfengyou339 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ), Liangfeng -you838 ( Bph14 + Bph15) were significantly lower than those in varieties (combinations) with no resistance gene, and those varieties ( combinations ) in adult-plant stage showed obvious resistance to BPH. R339 ( Bph15 ), R339 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ) ， R838 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ), Liangfeng-you339 ( Bph14 ), Liang- fengyou339 ( Bph15 ), Liang- fengyou339 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ), Liangeng-you838 ( Bph14 + Bph15 ) had application value in rice production in Guangxi. Based on GIS, GrADS, and HYSPLIT-4.8 model, this paper analyzed the daily light-trap catches of rice brown planthopper at 42 pest monitoring stations of 10 provinces in China, the wind field on 850 hPa isobaric surface, and the migration tracks of rice brown planthopper at 20 pest monitoring stations during the occurrence of 0505 typhoon 'Haitang' from 19th to 21st July, 2005. After its landing on China, the typhoon 'Haitang' changed the southwest air flow, a flow which leads the northward migration of rice brown planthopper, and made the wind field converge in the southwest of the typhoon and swerve in larger areas. Accordingly, the northward migration of the rice brown planthopper was stopped, and the airborne populations were forced to descend in some areas. The shear line area nearby 850 hPa isobaric surface was the concentration and deposition area of the rice brown planthopper. There would be a mass migration area in the warm airflow shear area in the southeast of typhoon during the collapse of the typhoon. After the whole typhoon landed, the southwest airflow rebuilt, and a mass rice brown planthopper migrated to the north. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
