Based on the advantages of photothermal catalysis in reducing CO2 to valuable fuels using solar and/or thermal driven catalysts, the mechanism, latest research, application and catalyst types are mainly discussed. At the same time, different strategies to improve the catalytic performance are concluded from three aspects: strengthening photoreaction, thermal reaction and surface reaction. It is analyzed that the local surface temperature of catalyst under illumination is the key factor affecting the rate of CO2 reduction reaction. The catalytic reaction can produce C1 and C2 products from CO2 and H2O. The rate of the reaction increases with the local temperature on the surface of the catalyst under light. Finally, the existing problems are analyzed in depth and the speculations on the future research priorities are prospected. More [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
