ADSORPTION (Chemistry) , *GAS absorption & adsorption , *PHYSISORPTION , *SURFACE chemistry , *RESEARCH skills , *CHEMICAL senses - Abstract
Gas adsorption on solid surfaces can be categorized into two types: physical adsorption and chemical adsorption. By applying knowledge of surface chemistry, this study aims to simulate and analyze experimental results in the resistive gas sensing process. The objective is to investigate the adsorption behavior and utilize it as research material for undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship projects and undergraduate thesis designs. This research will enhance students’ understanding of gas-solid adsorption principles, improve their ability to apply theory to practice, and cultivate their scientific research skills. Iron powder was used as passivator to analyze the adsorption characteristics of iron powder for Cd(Ⅱ) under various key factors through adsorption experiment. The process of Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption by iron powder was investigated through adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetic models. By scanning electron microscope (SEM) photographs and X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra, the adsorption mechanism was explored. The experimental results show that unit adsorption amount of iron powder is increased with the increasing of initial solution concentration level and reaction time and is decreased with the increasing of dosage. The initial solution pH has little effect on Cd(Ⅱ) adsorption by iron powder. When the initial solution concentration is 100 mg·L-1 with dosage of 20 g·L-1 and reaction time of 48 h, the removal efficiency of Cd(Ⅱ) is 94% with equilibrium adsorption capacity of 4.69 mg·g-1. Langmuir isotherm, Freundlich isotherm, R-P isotherm and intraparticle diffusion model are consistent with the adsorption process. Mechanism discussion shows that the removal of Cd(Ⅱ) is mostly pushed by the combination of physical adsorption and chemical adsorption by iron powder, while the chemical adsorption is dominant. The specific means include reduction of Cd(Ⅱ) by iron powder, coprecipitation of iron-containing colloid with Cd(Ⅱ) and electrostatic interaction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Alkali in high sodium coal causes a variety of problems including fouling, the corrosion of heating surface. It is feasible to capture alkali vapors with bed material, which is used as adsorbent. The fundamentals of the adsorption of alkali with bed material were studied through experiments. The mixture of NaCl and bed material was heated in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and muffle furnace. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) were conducted for the burned materials. The XRF test results show that the Na content is much higher than the Cl content in the burned sample at 800-900 ℃ and at the same blending ratio, the Cl content decreases as the temperature rises. At the same temperature, there is almost no Cl element in the burned sample while the Na content increases with the increase of the blending ratio. The XRD test results show that Na mainly exists in the form of unsolvable sodium in the burned materials such as sodium silicoaluminate. The test results demonstrate that the adsorption process is mainly chemical adsorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
