Objective: To explore the effectiveness of irreducible intertrochanteric femoral fracture in the elderly by treating with folding top technique and right-angle pliers prying and pulling under G-arm X-ray fluoroscopy., Methods: The clinical data of 74 elderly patients with irreducible intertrochanteric femoral fracture admitted between February 2016 and December 2022 and met the selection criteria were retrospectively analyzed. Among them, 38 cases were treated with folding top technique combined with right-angle pliers prying and pulling under G-arm X-ray fluoroscopy and intramedullary nailing fixation (study group), and 36 cases were treated with limited open reduction combined with other reduction methods and intramedullary nailing fixation (control group). There was no significant difference in baseline data between the two groups, such as age, gender, cause of injury, affected side and classification of fractures, complicated medical diseases, and time from injury to operation ( P >0.05). The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, hospital stay, fracture reduction time, fracture healing time, and complications of the two groups were recorded and compared. The quality of fracture reduction was evaluated by Baumgaertner et al. and Chang et al. fracture reduction standards., Results: Patients in both groups were followed up 10-14 months, with an average of 12 months. The operation time and intraoperative blood loss in the study group were significantly less than those in the control group ( P <0.05), there was no significant difference in hospital stay between the two groups ( P >0.05). At 2 days after operation, according to the fracture reduction standards of Baumgaertner et al. and CHANG Shimin et al. , the quality of fracture reduction in the study group was better than that in the control group, and the fracture reduction time in the study group was shorter than that in the control group, with significant differences ( P <0.05). After operation, the fractures of the two groups all healed, and there was no significant difference in healing time between the two groups ( P >0.05). During the follow-up, there was no complication such as incision infection, internal fixation failure, deep venous thrombosis of lower limbs, intramedullary nail breakage, spiral blade cutting, or hip varus in the two groups, except for 2 cases of coxa vara in the control group., Conclusion: For the irreducible intertrochanteric femoral fracture, using folding top technique combined with right-angle pliers prying and pulling under G-arm X-ray fluoroscopy can obviously shorten the operation time, reduce the intraoperative blood loss, and improve the quality of fracture reduction.

Cardiovascular complications are the leading cause of death in diabetic patients. Among them, diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a type of specific cardiomyopathy excluding myocardial damage caused by hypertension and coronary heart disease. It is characterized by abnormal metabolism of cardiomyocytes and gradual decline of cardiac function. The clinical manifestations of DCM are impaired diastolic function in early stage and impaired systolic function in late stage. Eventually it developed into heart failure. Mitochondria are the main organelles that provide energy in cardiomyocytes. Mitochondrial dynamics refers to the dynamic process of mitochondrial fusion and fission, which is an important approach for mitochondrial quality control. Mitochondrial dynamics plays a crucial role in maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis and cardiac function. The proteins that regulate mitochondrial fission are mainly Drp1 and its receptors, Fis1, MFF, MiD49 and MiD51. The protein that performs mitochondrial outer membrane fusion is Mfn1/2, and the inner membrane fusion protein is Opa1. This paper reviews recent progress on mitochondrial dynamics in DCM. The main contents are as follows: mitochondrial dynamics imbalance in both type 1 and 2 DCM is manifested as increased fission and inhibited fusion. The molecular mechanism of the former is mainly associated with up-regulated Drp1 and down-regulated Opa1, while the molecular mechanism of the latter is mainly associated with up-regulated Drp1 and down-regulated Mfn1/2. Increased mitochondrial fission and inhibited fusion can lead to mitochondrial dysfunction and promote the development of DCM. The active ingredients of the traditional Chinese medicine such as punicalagin, paeonol and endogenous substance melatonin can improve mitochondrial function and alleviate the symptoms of DCM by inhibiting mitochondrial fission or promoting mitochondrial fusion. This article is helpful to further understand the role and mechanism of mitochondrial dynamics in DCM, and provide new treatment methods and intervention strategies for clinical DCM patients based on mitochondrial dynamics.

Objective: To explore the mechanobiological mechanism of fluid shear force (FSF) on the protection, injury, and destruction of the structure and function of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) under normal physiological conditions, ischemic hypoperfusion, and postoperative hyperperfusion conditions. BBB is mainly composed of brain microvascular endothelial cells. Rat brain microvascular endothelial cells (rBMECs) were used as model cells to conduct the investigation., Methods: rBMECs were seeded at a density of 1×10 5 cells/cm 2 and incubated for 48 h. FSF was applied to the rBMECs at 0.5, 2, and 20 dyn/cm 2 , respectively, simulating the stress BBB incurs under low perfusion, normal physiological conditions, and high FSF after bypass grafting when there is cerebral vascular stenosis. In addition, a rBMECs static culture group was set up as the control (no force was applied). Light microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and laser confocal microscope (LSCM) were used to observe the changes in cell morphology and cytoskeleton. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) was used to observe the tight junctions. Immunofluorescence assay was performed to determine changes in the distribution of tight junction-associated proteins claudin-5, occludin, and ZO-1 and adherens junction-associated proteins VE-cadherin and PECAM-1. Western blot was performed to determine the expression levels of tight junction-associated proteins claudin-5, ZO-1, and JAM4, adherens junction-associated protein VE-cadherin, and key proteins in Rho GTPases signaling (Rac1, Cdc42, and RhoA) under FSF at different intensities., Results: Microscopic observation showed that the cytoskeleton exhibited disorderly arrangement and irregular orientation under static culture and low shear force (0.5 dyn/cm 2 ). Under normal physiological shear force (2 dyn/cm 2 ), the cytoskeleton was rearranged in the orientation of the FSF and an effective tight junction structure was observed between cells. Under high shear force (20 dyn/cm 2 ), the intercellular space was enlarged and no effective tight junction structure was observed. Immunofluorescence results showed that, under low shear force, the gap between the cells decreased, but there was also decreased distribution of tight junction-associated proteins and adherens junction-associated proteins at the intercellular junctions. Under normal physiological conditions, the cells were tightly connected and most of the tight junction-associated proteins were concentrated at the intercellular junctions. Under high shear force, the gap between the cells increased significantly and the tight junction and adherens junction structures were disrupted. According to the Western blot results, under low shear force, the expression levels of claudin-5, ZO-1, and VE-cadherin were significantly up-regulated compared with those of the control group ( P <0.05). Under normal physiological shear force, claudin-5, ZO-1, JAM4, and VE-cadherin were highly expressed compared with those of the control group ( P <0.05). Under high shear force, the expressions of claudin-5, ZO-1, JAM4, and VE-cadherin were significantly down-regulated compared with those of the normal physiological shear force group ( P <0.05). Under normal physiological shear force, intercellular expressions of Rho GTPases proteins (Rac1, Cdc42, and RhoA) were up-regulated and were higher than those of the other experimental groups ( P <0.05). The expressions of Rho GTPases under low and high shear forces were down-regulated compared with that of the normal physiological shear force group ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: Under normal physiological conditions, FSF helps maintain the integrity of the BBB structure, while low or high shear force can damage or destroy the BBB structure. The target gene sequences of the novel coronaviruses obtained by sequencing were compared with the reference sequences to analyze the genetic variation of the two cases of the novel coronaviruses from Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in 2022 and to explore the sources of infection. The results showed that the two sequences belonged to different evolutionary branches, Delta (AY.122) and Omicron (BA.1.1), respectively. hCoV-19/Inner Mongolia/IVDC-591/2022 had 48 single nucleotide polymorphisms on the genome sequences, sharing 40 nucleotide mutation sites with a Mongolian strain; hCoV-19/Inner Mongolia/IVDC-592/2022 genome shared 57 nucleotide mutation sites with a UK strain, and the nucleotide mutation site identity was 100% (57/57). Phylogenetic analysis showed that the target gene sequences were not directly related to domestic novel coronavirus sequences during the same period, but were related to isolates from Europe and Mongolia.

This study adopted ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry(UPLC-QTOF-MS)-based untargeted metabolomic approaches for exploring the changes in endogenous metabolites of rat serum related to property differences between ginseng and American ginseng. Then the action mechanisms of them with warm and cool properties and the effects of processing on their property changes were investigated. Based on principal component analysis(PCA), the differences in metabolite profiles between ginseng, red ginseng, American ginseng, and red American ginseng were compared. After that, 16 potential differential endogenous biomarkers were identified by orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis(OPLS-DA) and online database searching. And the related metabolic pathways were systematically analyzed. By comparing content variations of these 16 potential differential endogenous biomarkers, we have found that 10 potential differential biomarkers were responsible for the warm property of ginseng and red ginseng, and 9 were related to the cool property of American ginseng and red American ginseng. As demonstrated by in-depth analysis of related metabolic pathways of differential biomarkers, ginseng and American ginseng mainly played a role in regulating the energy metabolism of amino acid, glycolysis, and fatty acids, during which they exhibited differences in property. The comparison of content variations of these differential endogenous between groups revealed that the energy metabolism of red ginseng group was stronger than that of ginseng group, consistent with the traditional processing theory that the warming and tonifying effects of ginseng could be enhanced after processing. The property of red American ginseng was similar to that of American ginseng, both cool in property, but American ginseng was cooler than red American ginseng. It can be seen that non-targeted metabolomic approaches can be utilized to study mechanisms underlying property differences of Chinese medicines and the effects of processing on their property changes.

Objective: To explore the optimization scheme of maintaining bus voltage stability during turbo-turbine acceleration and deceleration of ventilator., Methods: The ideal diode is used to replace the diode in the busbar power supply circuit, and a comparative discharge circuit is added to the busbar. When the busbar voltage is higher than the preset threshold, the comparator can be opened and the energy could be discharged through the power resistor., Results: When the turbine starts and stops rapidly, the optimized scheme can effectively reduce the bus impedance, and the discharge circuit can maintain the bus voltage fluctuation less than 2 V., Conclusions: The optimization scheme proposed in this study can effectively improve the efficiency and stability of the turbine in the process of acceleration and braking, and provide reference for the design of the stability maintenance circuit of the ventilator turbine bus.

This study explored the variation of bursting force of multi-chamber infusion bag with different geometry size, providing guidance for its optimal design. Models of single-chamber infusion bag with different size were established. The finite element based on fluid cavity method was adopted to calculate the fluid-solid coupling deformation process of infusion bag to obtain corresponding critical bursting force. As a result, we proposed an empirical formula predicting the critical bursting force of one chamber infusion bag with specified geometry size. Besides, a theoretical analysis, which determines the force condition of three chamber infusion bag when falling from high altitude, was conducted. The proportion of force loaded on different chamber was gained. The results indicated that critical bursting force is positively related to the length and width of the chamber, and negatively related to the height of the chamber. While the infusion bag falling, the impact force loaded on each chamber is proportional to the total liquid within it. To raise the critical bursting force of in fusion bag, a greater length and width corresponding to reduced height are recommended considering the volume of liquid needed to be filled in.

This study aims to overcome the shortcomings such as low efficiency, high cost and difficult to carry out multi-parameter research, which limited the optimization of infusion bag configuration and manufacture technique by experiment method. We put forward a fluid cavity based finite element method, and it could be used to simulate the stress distribution and deformation process of infusion bag under external load. In this paper, numerical models of infusion bag with different sizes was built, and the fluid-solid coupling deformation process was calculated using the fluid cavity method in software ABAQUS subject to the same boundary conditions with the burst test. The peeling strength which was obtained from the peeling adhesion test was used as failure criterion. The calculated resultant force which makes the computed peeling stress reach the peeling strength was compared with experiment data, and the stress distribution was analyzed compared with the rupture process of burst test. The results showed that considering the errors caused by the difference of weak welding and eccentric load, the flow cavity based finite element method can accurately model the stress distribution and deformation process of infusion bag. It could be useful for the optimization of multi chamber infusion bag configuration and manufacture technique, leading to cost reduction and study efficiency improvement.

Objective: To investigate the effects of simulated-thermobaric explosive gas on the respiration and nervous system in rats. Methods: 70 of SPF SD rats were randomly divided into four thermobaric explosive gas groups, two restoration observation groups and control group from April to August in 2018. The exposure time of in four thermobaric explosive gas groups were 3.75, 7.5, 15.0 and 30 min, respectively. The restoration observation groups were designed to observe for 30 and 120 min after exposure thermobaric explosive gas 30 min. The bloods were collected and analyzed at the end of exposure and recovery observation. The endogenous carbon monoxide (CO) , nitric oxide (NO) , glutamic acid (GLU) , acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and dopamine (DA) were detected in brain tissues, respectively. Results: The blood gas index (pH, PCO(2), PO(2), COHb, O(2)Hb, MeHbt) and blood electrolytes (Na(+), K(+), Ca(2+) and Cl(-)) in exposure groups have significant differences with these in control ( P <0.05) . The pH value decreased with the exposure time longer. However, it basically returned to normal level when terminating exposure for 120 min. The concentration of PCO(2), MeHb and CoHb increased first and then decreased with the exposure time extension. Conversely, The PO(2) and O(2)Hb decreased first and then increased with the exposure time longer. The concentration of endogenous CO, GLU, and AchE decreased and NO increased in exposure group 4 and the restoration observation group 1 compared with those in control ( P <0.01) . In addition, there were pathological changes in lung and brain tissue of exposure group, such as inflammatory cell infiltration and edema. Conclusion: The blood gas index, electrolytes, neurotransmitter, histopathology of lung and brain were changed to various degrees by thermobaric bomb gas exposure. These findings would provide some beneficial support for evaluating the damage effect of thermobaric bomb gas on organisms.

Objective: Proteus syndrome is a rare disease. The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinical characteristics and gene mutations of Proteus syndrome with a case report and relevant literature review. Methods: Clinical data of the patient with Proteus syndrome were collected in detail and biochemical measurements and radiological examinations were conducted. Tissues from phalanges with lesions were obtained to extract DNA, and Sanger sequencing of AKT1 gene was carried on. The pathogenic mutation was further tested in peripheral blood samples of the patient, his parents and 250 healthy volunteers. Orthopaedic surgery was performed on the affected limbs of the patient. Results: The patient was presented with progressive overgrowth of the right extremity, scoliosis, cerebral connective tissue nevus and lower extremity venous. A heterozygous mutation of AKT1 gene (c. 49G>A) was identified in DNA extracted from the affected bone tissue of the patient, but not be found in genomic DNA of peripheral blood samples from the patient, his parents and 250 healthy volunteers. Movement function of the affected limb improved significantly after the operations. Conclusions: The prominent features of Proteus syndrome are overgrowth of one extremity and cerebral connective tissue nevus. A mosaic somatic mutation of AKT1 gene is one of the pathogenic mutations for Proteus syndrome, and orthopedic surgery may be a good way to improve symptoms of the disease.

Purpose: This study was to evaluate the upper airway changes in patients with skeletal Class Ⅲ maxillary retrognathia after rapid maxillary expansion and protraction., Methods: An electronic search in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CNKI, CBM, VIP and Wanfang was performed until March 1st, 2018. According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, two investigators respectively reviewed the literature and selected eligible studies, then assessed the risks of bias and extracted the data of the included studies. The extracted data were quantitatively analyzed with Revman 5.3 software., Results: A total of 12 studies were included for meta-analysis. The results showed that, after treatment the nasopharyngeal volum(P<0.05) increased significantly. However, no statistically significant differences in oropharyngeal volume(P>0.05) and hypopharyneal volume (P>0.05) existed. The nasopharyngeal airway dimensions had increased significantly with the following measurements: PNS-ad1 (P<0.05), PNS-ad2(P<0.05). However, no statistically significant differences in lower pharynx dimension existed with the following measurements: MPS(P>0.05), IPS(P>0.05)., Conclusions: Rapid maxillary expansion and protraction can increase nasopharyngeal volume and sagittal airway dimensions in skeletal Class Ⅲ subjects with maxillary retrusion. It may be suggested that rapid maxillary expansion and protraction have the potential to reduce the risk of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children with maxillary retrusion by enlarging airway space.

Candida albicans is an important opportunistic fungal pathogen of humans. Phenotypic plasticity is a typical biological feature of C. albicans, which is associated with pathogenicity, host adaptation, and sexual reproduction. Biofilm of C. albicans is a complex community formed by different morphological types of cells (yeast, hyphae and pseudohyphae) and secreted extracellular matrix. C. albicans biofilms are intrinsically resistant to antifungal drugs, the host immune system, and environmental stresses. Biofilm is an important virulence factor and a major clinical challenge. With the development of new technologies in global gene expression profiles and genetic manipulation, the regulatory mechanisms that govern C. albicans biofilm development and drug resistance become more and more clear. Major regulatory mechanisms involve the MAPK and cAMP signaling pathways and transcriptional regulators such as Bcr1 and Tec1. In addition, morphological transitions and sexual reproduction are also involved in the regulation of biofilm development. In this review, we focus on the genetic regulatory mechanisms of biofilm including the roles of cell-wall related proteins, transcription factors, and the MTL locus. In the last section, we also summarize the mechanisms of drug resistance of biofilm in C. albicans.

Objective: To study the effect of co-culture of stromal cells and acute myeloid leukemia(AML) cells on drug resistance of AML cells and its mechanism., Methods: Stromal cells were co-cultured with acute myeloid leukemia cell HL-60 and then were treated with DNR, HHT and Ara-C for observing the sensitivity of HL-60 cells to drugs after incubation with HS-5. At the same time, the the inhibitor LY294002 of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway was used to treat the cells, so as to explore whether the changes of HL-60 sensitivity is associated with the activation of PI3K/AKT signal pathway after co-culture of cells., Results: The statistical results of HL-60 cell inhibition rate showed that the HL-60 cell sensitivity to drugs was decreased after incubation with HS-5, the mRNA quantitation and immunblot detection showed that PI3K/AKT signaling pathway was activated after co-culture of HL-60 cells with HS-5 cells, in addition the CCND1, FOXO1, PTEN and other important genes were also changed significantly., Conclusion: After co-culture of HL-60 cells with HS-5, some important molecules of PI3K/AKT signal pathway are changed, such as CCND1,FOXO1, PTEN, finally leading to the change of HL-60 cell sensitivity to drugs.

Objective: To understand the HIV prevalence among men who have sex with men (MSM) and discuss the feasibility of respondent driven sampling (RDS) as a tool to conduct long term HIV surveillance in MSM in Beijing. Methods: From 2005 to 2012 RDS was used to recruit MSM for face-to-face interview with structured questionnaire to collect their demographic characteristics and HIV risk-related behavior. Blood samples were collected from them for HIV test. Results: A total of 427, 540, 607, 614, 616, 602, 579 and 600 MSM were surveyed, respectively, from 2005 to 2012. The HIV infection prevalence increased from 4.2 % (95 %CI : 1.9-7.0) in 2005 to 10.1 % (95 %CI : 7.2-13.2) in 2012 ( P =0.02). Meanwhile, HIV prevalence substantially increased among MSM aged >25 years, in floating population and with lower education level (≤high school), from 6.4 % (95 %CI : 2.2-9.5), 3.3 % (95 %CI : 1.8-5.4) and 5.5 % (95 %CI : 2.2-8.9) in 2005 to 7.6 % (95 %CI : 5.4-10.3, P =0.04), 10.7 % (95 % CI : 7.8-14.6, P =0.04) and 10.4 % (95 % CI :7.2-14.3, P =0.04) in 2012, respectively. Moreover, the HIV infection prevalence in MSM aged ≤25 years old and with higher education level (>high school) increased from 1.7 % (95 %CI : 0.4-3.1) in 2009 and 1.1 % (95 %CI : 0.2-1.7) in 2007 to 13.7 % (95 %CI : 7.2-20.4) and 9.1 % (95 %CI : 4.7-13.8) in 2012, respectively, the differences were not significant. Furthermore, the HIV infection prevalence in MSM who had 2-9 male sex partners in the last six months increased from 4.0 % (95 % CI : 1.0-8.0) in 2005 to 12.6 % (95 % CI : 8.7-16.7) in 2012 ( P =0.02). Conclusions: Studies have shown that RDS is an effective and feasible sampling method for long term HIV surveillance in MSM. The HIV infection prevalence in MSM in Beijing increased from 2005 to 2012, especially among those with older age, in floating population and with lower educational level. More attention should be paid to MSM with younger age and with higher educational level.

To elucidate the intervention effects of Jiaotai pills(JTP) on p-chlorophenylalanine (PCPA)-induced insomnia in rats and its underlying mechanism, the insomnia model was established by single intraperitoneal injection with PCPA in rats. The locomotor activity of rats was observed, and the levels of nerve growth factor(NGF) in hypothalamus, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and serum of rats were determined by using ELISA. Moreover, a proton nuclear magnetic resonance(¹H-NMR)-based metabonomic approach was developed to profile insomnia-related metabolites in rat serum and hippocampus and analyze the intervention effects of JTP on changes in underlying biomarkers related to locomotor activity, NGF and insomnia. According to the results, JTP could significantly suppress the locomotor activity of insomnia rats, and increase the NGF levels in hypothalamus, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and serum of rats with insomnia. The disturbed metabolic state associated with PCPA-induced insomnia in rat serum and hippocampus could be intervened by JTP. Meanwhile, six and five potential biomarkers related to insomnia in rat serum and hippocampus were reversed by administration of JTP. Objective: To investigate skin sensitization of 3, 4-bis (4'-aminofurazano-3') furoxan (DATF) in mice using 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (BrdU-ELISA) . Methods: A total of 30 specific pathogen-free BALB/C mice were randomly divided into high-, medium-, and low-dose DATF groups, positive control group, and solvent control group, with six mice in each group. The mice in the high-, medium-, and low-dose DATF groups were treated with 50%, 25%, and 10% (0.5, 0.25, and 0.10 g/ml) DATF solution, those in the positive control group were treated with 1% 2, 4-dinitrochlorobenzol (DNCB) , and those in the solvent control group were treated with acetone/olive oil (4∶1) . After treatment, retroauricular lymph nodes were collected and cell suspension was prepared. ELISA was used to measure the level of cell proliferation after the addition of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) , and the BrdU labeling index (LI) and test substance concentration at a stimulation index (SI) of 1.6 (EC 1.6 ) were calculated. Results: There were no significant differences in auricular thickness between groups ( P >0.05) , and DAFT did not have skin irritation. Compared with the solvent control group, the high-dose DATF group and the positive control group showed significant increases in the weight of lymph nodes ( P <0.05) . Compared with the solvent control group, all the other groups showed significant increases in BrdU LI ( P <0.01) . The low-, medium-, and high-dose DATF groups had SIs of 6.1, 8.8, and 12.1, respectively, and the EC 1.6 of DATF was 2.2%, which suggested that DATF had strong sensitization. Conclusion: DATF has strong skin sensitization in mice, with reference to the guideline of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development Item No. 442B (OECD TG 442B) .

Objective: To evaluate five heavy metal biotoxicity effects on Caenorhabditis elegans with Meta regression analysis., Methods: The data were collected from the following electronic databases：PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO, the Chinese Biomedical Database, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan Fang (Chinese) Databases and so on, and all updated through January 2004 to December 2014. A literature review was made on articles about Cd, Hg, Pb, As and Cr toxicity effects on C. elegans , and the data was extracted from figure information by Scan It software. A Meta regression model was built by stata12.0 software, using toxicity indices such as the dependent variables, and different metals, concentrations, exposure time, and development stages of C. elegans as independent variables., Results: The study articles asociated with heavy metal biotoxicity effects on C. elegans were selected out, 10 studies of Cu, 12 studies of Cr, 12 studies of Pb, 12 studies of Cd, 3 studies of As and 14 studies of Hg. The mortality of toxicities of 5 heavy metals on C. elegans ranked Hg > Pb > Cr> Cd>As; the biotoxicity of the indexes of body size based on development, generational time based on reproductive toxicity, body bend frequencies, and head thrash frequencies based on neurotoxicity ranked Hg > Pb > Cr > Cd; the biotoxicity ranked Hg > Pb > Cr> Cd>As by LC 50 indexes of toxicities of 5 heavy metals on C. elegans . The sensitivity analysis proved that the Meta regression model was reliable., Conclusions: The biotoxicities on C. elegans of Hg and Pb are stronger than Cr, Cd and As.

Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) are conservative molecules associated with groups of pathogens or their products. These molecules are recognized by relevant receptors. PAMPs induce the expression of inflammatory cytokines through the signal cascade. The role of PAMPs in the initiation and development of periodontitis is recently attracting attention. PAMPs induce the expression of inflammatory mediators after they are recognized in the periodontium. This process damages the periodontal soft tissue and osseous tissue, thus resulting in periodontitis. The results of this study will provide an excellent resolution for the treatment of periodontitis by blocking the pathogenic pathway of PAMPs.

Objective: To evaluate the change in accommodative lag and accommodation convergence/accommodation (AC/A) after patients with myopia wear orthokeratology lenses. 
, Methods: A total of 48 myopic subjects (a test group), who wore orthokeratology lenses regularly, and 48 myopic subjects (a control group), who wore spectacles regularly, were enrolled for this study from January 2011 to January 2013 in Optometric Center, the Forth Hospital of Changsha. Accommodative lag was measured by fused cross cylinder method, where the patients should gaze at the front optotypes 40 cm away. Gradient of the AC/A ratio was measured by Von Grafe method to check closer distance heterophoria. Accommodative lag and AC/A ratio were analyzed by statistics.
, Results: After 1-year follow-up, accommodative lag and AC/A rate in patients with low or moderate myopia in the test group was decreased in 1, 3, 6 months or 1 year compared with that in the control group (P<0.05). 
, Conclusion: Compared with spectacles, orthokeratology lenses are able to decrease accommodative lag and high AC/A rate in patients with low or moderate myopia. The relationship between accommodation and convergence is improved by orthokeratology lenses. Orthokeratology is an effective way to control myopia.

Objective: To explore the effect of curcumin (Cur) on the subpopulation and costimulatory molecules of dendritic cells (DCs) in spleen from colitis mice., Methods: Forty male C57/BL mice were randomly divided into 4 groups: normal group, model group, Cur group and mesalazine group. Colitis was induced by 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). On the 8th day following 7-day treatment with Cur, the mice were sacrificed and the length and mass of mouse colon were measured. And then the spleens were separated to prepare DCs. The numbers of CD205(+), CD4(+)CD205(+), CD8(+)CD205(+) DCs and the levels of major histocompability complex II (MHC-II), Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2), TLR4 and CD83 expression were detected by flow cytometry. And we observed the pathological injury of colon., Results: Compared with model group, the colonic mass index was reduced, the length of colon was lengthened, and the pathological injury was remitted. Meanwhile, the percents of CD205(+), CD4(+)CD205(+), CD8(+)CD205(+) DCs and the levels of MHC-II, TLR2 and TLR4 were down-regulated, however, the CD83 expression was up-regulated., Conclusion: Treatment efficacy of Cur on experimental colitis might be involved in regulating subpopulation and co-stimulatory molecules of dendritic cells in spleen from mice with colitis.

Objective: To detect the toxicity and teratogenicity of 2, 2-dinitroethene-1, 1-diamine (FOX-7) in rats., Methods: 125 adult SD rats were randomly divided into five groups, which are negative control (0 mg/kg) , positive control (280 mg/kg aspirin) , and three dose groups (5, 15, and 45 mg/kg) . They were administrated by gavage once a day from the 5th days to 19th days after pregnancy. The weight changes and toxicity of pregnant rats are recorded within the study, and the skeleton and internal organs malformations are detected by the recommended methods., Results: After 5 or 6 days being poisoned, the pregnant rats appear significantly toxicity symptoms, such as exciting, irritability, and so on. The net weight raise in high dose group is less than the negative group, while the numbers of dead foetus in median and high dose groups are both more than that of negative group. Comparing with the negative group, the body weight and body lenghth of foetus rats in median and high dose groups, and the tail lenghth in high dose group are lower significantly. There are no external malformations in negative group and three dose groups. However, the foetus of high dose group appear significant skeleton and internal organs malformation prevalences that are significant more than negative group, including lateral cerebral ventricles enlarged, which accounts for 9.17%, occipital bone lost, which accounts for 2.59%., Conclusion: FOX-7 can induced maternal reproductive toxicity, foetus toxicity and teratogenicity hazards to rats.

Objective: To detect the embryo toxicity and the teratogenicity of DNAN in rats and provide basic data to occupational protection., Methods: 120 adult female SD rats and 60 male rats are mating for 1: 1, and the pregnant rats were randomly divided into five groups by the pregnant time. The negative control group are gavaged with 4% starch, and the three experiment groups are gavaged with DNAN suspension with the dose of 5 mg/kg, 15 mg/kg and 45 mg/kg respectively, while the positive control give aspirin of 280 mg/kg. All rats of the five groups are administrated gavage from gestation day 5 (GD5) to GD19 continuously. The rats are dislocated in GD20, and the toxicity of embryo and toetus are detected., Results: The net weight growth in all three dose group are less than that of negative group, while the dead foetus in high dose group is more than negative group. Moreover, the body weight, body lenghth, tail lenghth and the anal genital distance of foetus rats in high dose group are all less than that of negative group. The foetus external malformations of three dose groups appear no significant compared with negative group.However, the prevalences of skeleton malformation in high dose group and the internal organs malformation in the median and high dose group appear significant higher than that of negative group. There are significantly maternal reproductive toxicity, embryo toxicity and toetus toxicity in positive group., Conclusion: DNAN can induced maternal reproductive toxicity, embryo toxicity and the teratogenicity to rats.

Objective: To introduce the Ages and Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3), to China, created ASQ-Chinese (ASQ-C) and carried out studies of its national norm and the psychometrical properties in the children aged 1-66 months in the mainland of China in collaboration with the author of the ASQ System and under the authorizations from its publisher on translation, researches, publication and distribution of the ASQ-3., Method: The ASQ-3 questionnaires were translated and adapted into a Simplified Chinese version, the ASQ-C, with six steps such as translation, back-translation and adaptation and so on to ensure consistency with the core of the original document and to have the cultural relevance in China.A stratified cluster sampling method was utilized to recruit children aged 1-66 months with respect to demographic characteristics such as the proportion of population in each administrative region and in urban and rural areas and so on that are representative of 2010 China census data.A sample size of over 200 was collected for each ASQ-C age interval.Children were excluded from the normative sample who (1) are from communities or villages at an elevation of 2 000 m or above and(or) where simplified Chinese is not the official language, or (2) had been diagnosed as having a developmental delay by any authoritative organizations.The national normative sample for the ASQ-C had a total sample size of 4 452, sample size within each age interval ranged from 218 to 227, including 2 230 male cases and 2 222 female cases, 2 236 urban cases and 2 216 rural cases.A convenience sample was recruited from the normative sample to examine inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability in all six administrative regions.Researchers completed the ASQ-C on the same child with their parents for 162 children for inter-rater reliability(the size of each ASQ-C age interval was 5-9); parents of 168 children completed another age-appropriate ASQ-C for test-retest reliability during 10-15 days after they completed the normative ASQ-C(The size of each ASQ-C age interval is 6-10). Another convenience sample was recruited from the follow-up of low birth weight infants for the concurrent validity of the ASQ-C in comparison with the Beijing Gesell.Parents of 198 children completed age-appropriate ASQ-C and professional administered to the children with the Beijing Gesell.In the ASQ-C norm and test-retest reliability, parents completed the age-appropriate ASQ-C, independently or with needed assistance. In inter-rater reliability, researchers completed the same ASQ-C after parents. In validity test, after parents completing age-appropriate ASQ-C, professional tested children with the Beijing Gesell.Data were analyzed using SPSS version 13.0 software.The mean and standard deviation of the national normative sample were calculated, reliability and validity of the ASQ-C was examined., Result: The demographic characteristics of this Chinese sample match the 2010 China census data on gender, urban or rural location, and family income.All 20 intervals of the ASQ-C were standardized on 21 national normative samples.Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the whole measure was 0.8.The Pearson correlation coefficient between the ASQ-C total scores of the two raters was 0.8.The Pearson correlation coefficient between the ASQ-C total scores of the two times was 0.8 (all P<0.000 1). The sensitivity of ASQ-C was 87.50% and the specificity of ASQ-C was 84.48%.The percentage of the agreement between the ASQ-C and the Beijing Gesell was 84.74%., Conclusion: These findings indicate that the ASQ-C is a reliable and valid measure with a representative national sample aged 1-66 months.It can be used to screen and monitor the development of children in the mainland of China.

In this study, we investigate the bioaccessibility of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, As, Cd and Hg) in wild Artemisia annua and use target hazard quotients (THQ) proposed by US Environmental Protection Agency to assess the health risk under the heavy metal exposure. The results showed that the bioaccessibility of Cu, Pb, As, Cd and Hg in A. annua are 0.77, 0.66, 0.46, 0.68 and 0, respectively, and that the value of THQ for adults and children were 0.030 and 0.025 calculated by risk assessment model. The results indicated that the heavy metals in A. annua were not able to be completely absorbed by human body and that their contents were in a safe range. In this study, by combining the bioavailability of heavy metal and health risk assessment, we assessed the security of heavy metals of wild A. annua, which will provide reference for the standard of heavy metals for medicinal materials.

Objective: To explore the thyroid function distribution of different trimesters among normal pregnant women and establish the reference interval for maternal thyroid function during pregnancy in Shenzhen, China., Methods: A prospective study was conducted for healthy pregnant women in first trimester (n = 334), second trimester (n = 272), third trimester (n = 271) and non-pregnant controls (n = 77) from December 2012 to June 2013 at our hospital. Free triiodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (TT3) and thyroxine (T4) of four groups were measured and analyzed. And the reference intervals for different trimesters were established., Results: TSH declined in the first trimester and then rose in the second trimester. The reference ranges of TSH for early, middle and late pregnancy were 0.08-4.39, 0.41-4.16 and 0.30-5.46 mIU/L respectively. FT4 and healthy control groups showed no significant difference in the first trimester. But it declined in the second trimester. The reference ranges of FT4 for early, middle and late pregnancy were 7.74-14.58, 6.81-12.00 and 6.36-10.99 pmol/L respectively. FT3 rose slightly in the first trimester and then gradually decreased. The reference ranges of FT3 for early, middle and late pregnancy were 3.59-5.59, 3.34-4.91 and 3.09-4.58 pmol/L respectively., Conclusions: As compared with healthy control women in Shenzhen, thyroid function indicators of pregnant women show statistically significant differences. And the establishment of indicators of women's thyroid function reference intervals for different trimesters has important clinical significance in Shenzhen.

Vogt-Koyanagi-Halada syndrome is an autoimmune disease attacking melanocytes, which involves eye, ear, meninge and skin. Patient offen has uveitis and extraocular symptoms and signs and the misdiagnosis of missed diagnosis of VKHS is very common. Patients have good prognosis after hormone therapy.

In this study, Actin, 18S rRNA, PAL, GAPDH and CPR of Artemisia annua were selected as candidate reference genes, and their gene-specific primers for real-time PCR were designed, then geNorm, NormFinder, BestKeeper, Delta CT and RefFinder were used to evaluate their expression stability in the leaves of A. annua under treatment of different concentrations of Cd, with the purpose of finding a reliable reference gene to ensure the reliability of gene-expression analysis. The results showed that there were some significant differences among the candidate reference genes under different treatments and the order of expression stability of candidate reference gene was Actin > 18S rRNA > PAL > GAPDH > CPR. These results suggested that Actin, 18S rRNA and PAL could be used as ideal reference genes of gene expression analysis in A. annua and multiple internal control genes were adopted for results calibration. In addition, differences in expression stability of candidate reference genes in the leaves of A. annua under the same concentrations of Cd were observed, which suggested that the screening of candidate reference genes was needed even under the same treatment. To our best knowledge, this study for the first time provided the ideal reference genes under Cd treatment in the leaves of A. annua and offered reference for the gene expression analysis of A. annua under other conditions.

Hereditary angioneurotic laryngeal edema (HALE) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease in which there is a decrease or defect in the C1 inhibitor (C1-INH). The pathophysiology of HALE is characterized by recurrent spontaneous episodes of transient edema of the laryngeal mucose and submucosal tissue with remission at irregular. Patients may die because of a life-threatening acute upper airway obstruction caused by laryngeal edema. HALE was diagnosed on the clinical symptoms, family history, and markedly decreased serum C1-INH activity and C1-INH protein.

Objective: To investigate the correlation of polysomnography parameters and CT measurements in upper airway of mild and severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) patients before and after uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)., Method: Having PSG detection and spiral computed tomograph scan for 30 mild and severe OSAHS patients both before and after UPPP operation, compare the morphology change of upper airway on CT measurements, use pearson correlation analysis to analysis the correlation between the minimum cross-sectional area, left and right diameter, anteroposterior diameter in upper airway and apnea hypopnea index (AHI)., Result: The difference of the minimum cross-sectional area, left and right diameter, anteroposterior diameter in upper airway before and after UPPP operation was significant. The minimum cross-sectional area, left and right diameter was negatively correlated with AHI; Left and right diameter was not correlated with AHI., Conclusion: The minimum cross-sectional area, left and right diameter, anteroposterior diameter after operation is bigger than before operation. The minimum cross-sectional area, left and right diameter is negatively correlated with AHI.

Plant can produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) in normal physiological activity. However, ROS can increase dramatically by environmental stress. The increase may break the ROS balance in the plant. To control ROS levels in plants, an antioxidant system is needed to protect the cell. This paper introduced the types and functions of antioxidant enzymes, and studied the effects of plant and environmental factors on the activities of antioxidant enzymes. At last, the paper discussed the research hot fields of the effect of environmental stress on antioxidant enzymes, and gave the research strategies to the problems which happened in the studies.

Objective: To study the differences between amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) teeth and normal human (NH) teeth in wear properties., Methods: The ultrastructure of the human tooth enamel from adult patient diagnosed with AI was investigated using atomic force microscope (AFM) and compared with the surface of normal human tooth enamel. The composition of tooth enamel of AI teeth and normal human teeth were analyzed by energydispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The properties of micro-friction and wear between AI teeth and normal human teeth were compared using nano-scratch technology and scanning electron microscope (SEM)., Results: The AI teeth were found porosity and the loosely packed hydroxyapatite was distributed randomly compared with normal human teeth. The amount of C was higher while the amount of Ca, P were lower in AI teeth than normal human teeth. The friction coefficient of both AI teeth and normal human teeth was increasing with the load increased and the friction coefficient of AI teeth was higher than normal human teeth with the same load. Meanwhile, the destruction of AI teeth was more severe than normal human teeth with the same load., Conclusion: The AI teeth has significant differences with normal human teeth on micro-structure, composition and micro-friction and wear properties. Thus, we need to have a general consideration of all these results when doing clinical restorations.

Objective: To evaluate retinoblastoma regression patterns following chemo reduction and adjuvant therapy., Methods: Retrospective case series. 122 tumors of 47 eyes of 37 patients following chemo reduction and adjuvant therapy between January 2005 and June 2009 in the Eye & ENT hospital of Fudan University. Twenty-seven patients are male, and 10 patients are female. The average age was 22 months. The combined therapy included chemo reduction using vincristine, etoposide, and carboplatin (VEC) combined with local cryotherapy and/or transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT). The average follow-up duration was 32 months ranging from 12 to 60 months. Regression patterns included type 0 (no remnant), type 1 (calcified remnant), type 2 (noncalcified remnant), type 3 (partially calcified remnant), and type 4 (flat scar). Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to test the difference of tumor number between the patients with family history and those without family history. Chi-square test was used to test the difference between the tumor thickness, tumor location and regression patterns. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to test the correlation between the regression patterns and age, sex, tumor thickness, tumor location and family history. Statistical significance was assigned at P < 0.05., Results: Forty-seven eyes according to the International Intraocular Retinoblastoma Classification, 20 eyes (42.6%) were group A, 13 eyes (27.6%) group B, 6 eyes (12.8%) group C, 8 eyes (17.0%) group D. Of 122 tumors, the average number of tumors per eye was 2.6. Retinoblastoma regressions were type 0 (n = 3), type 1 (n = 15), type 2 (n = 8), type 3 (n = 25), and type 4 (n = 71). Tumor thickness and tumor location were related to regression patterns. Tumors with an initial thickness of 2 mm or less regressed most often to type 4, and those thicker than 8 mm regressed to type 1 or type 3. Tumors with greater distance from the foveola regressed most often to type 4. The factors predictive of regression pattern type 1 included tumor thickness larger than 8 mm (Z = 3.02, P = 0.003). The factors predictive of regression pattern type 3 included older age, tumor thickness larger than 8 mm and location not in the equator to ora serrata region (Z = 3.98, 2.23, 3.60; P = 0.000, 0.025, 0.000). The factors predictive of regression pattern type 4 included familial hereditary pattern, tumor thickness smaller than 2 mm and location in the equator to ora serrata region. (Z = 4.37, 3.42, 2.42; P = 0.000, 0.000, 0.021). 12 tumors recurred, 9 tumors were type 3 and 3 tumors were type 4. 8 eyes developed 15 new tumors. 5 patients developed new tumors were all younger patients and had familial hereditary history. The average period of recurrence of main tumors and development of new tumors was six months after the end of chemo reduction., Conclusions: Following chemo reduction, type 3 and type 4 regression patterns were most common. Smaller tumors were usually seen in type 4, and bigger tumors were usually seen in type 1 or type 3. Tumor recurrence was usually found following regression pattern type 3 or type 4. Younger patients and patients with familial hereditary history trend to develop new tumors. Patients accept chemo reduction and adjuvant therapy need close follow-up.

Objective: To provide a suitable vehicle-mounted installation to solve the problem of drinking water in the wild., Methods: The vehicle-mounted drinking water installation, made up of pre-treatment unit, purification unit, box and VECU, was used to storage, transport and purify water in the wild. The effect of purification was detected by assembling the installation in the wild and observing the change of water turbidity, TDS, the number of total bacteria and coliform bacteria before and after the treatment of water sources., Results: The wild water sources, such as river water, rainwater, well water and spring water could be purified, and the quality of the treated water could meet the requirement of Drinking Water Quality Standard of CJ94-2005., Conclusion: The vehicle-mounted drinking water installation is suitable for purifying water sources in the wild for drinking use.

Objective: To understand the prevalence of and factors associated with unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Beijing., Methods: Five hundred MSM were recruited for a survey using Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS) method, from September to October in 2009. A computer-assisted, interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to gather information including demographics, sexual behaviors and condom use social norms (a scaled number). Variables were evaluated by using RDSAT and SAS software., Results: Mean age of the participants was 30.6 years, with 96.0% of them as Han ethnicity and 68.5% having had at least high school or higher education level. 72.8% of them were unmarried, with 61.7% of them identified themselves as homosexual, 61.2% had > 1 male partners in the past six months, and the prevalence of UAI was 42.0%. Significant bivariate predictors of UAI would include condom use social norms score, role for anal sex with male sex partner, number of male sexual partners in the past 6 months and amount of alcohol consumed. In multivariable analysis, UAI was associated with a higher condom use social norms score (AOR = 1.2, 95%CI: 1.1 - 1.3), receptive anal intercourse (AOR = 2.0, 95%CI: 1.3 - 3.2) and drinking alcohol more than 3 times per month in the past 12 months (AOR = 1.6, 95%CI: 1.1 - 2.5)., Conclusion: The prevalence of UAI was high in the MSM community in Beijing, suggesting that efforts should be targeting on how to make the condom use a social norm and being promoted.

In the present work, a uniform discharge in low-pressure air was obtained by a dielectric barrier discharge device. The spatial homogeneity of the plasma temperature was studied by optical emission spectrum. The vibrational temperature was calculated by second positive band C3 pi(u) --> B3 pi(g) and the rotational temperature (gas temperature) was calculated by N2+ first negative band B 2 sigma(u)+ --> X 2 sigma(g)+. It was found that the vibrational temperature decreases with the voltage increasing, while the rotational temperature increases. In addition, the fluctuation amplitudes of vibrational and rotational temperature of the plasma along diameter of the discharge area decrease with the voltage increasing, which indicates that the homogeneity of the plasma increases with the voltage increasing. These results are of great significance to the application of uniform discharge obtained in air dielectric barrier discharge for material processing.

Slot microplasma was generated in argon and air mixture by using dielectric barrier discharge device with two parallel water electrodes. The molecular vibrational temperature, molecular rotational temperature and average electron energy of the slot plasma were studied by optical emission spectrum. The molecular vibrational temperature was calculated using the second positive system of nitrogen molecules ( C3 pi(u) --> B3 pi(g)). The molecular rotational temperature was calculated using the first negative system of nitrogen molecular ions ( B 2sigma(u)+ --> X sigma(g)+). The relative intensities of the first negative system of nitrogen molecular ions (391.4 nm) and nitrogen molecules in the excitation level (337.1 nm) emission spectrum line were measured for studying the variations of electron energy. It was found that the molecular vibrational temperature, molecular rotational temperature and average electron energy decrease with gas pressure increasing.

Objective: To screen common traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome factors of chronic renal failure (CRF) via questionnaire investigation among experts., Methods: A questionnaire was developed based on the results of our previous researches. The investigation was carried out with the questionnaire among experts who are engaged in clinical research and treatment of nephrosis with the title of chief or associate chief physician from 15 hospitals in China. Common TCM syndrome factors of CRF were obtained based on the data analysis of the mean value on general evaluation, cumulative percentage and coefficient of variation., Results: A total of 114 sets of the questionnaire were sent out and all of them were returned back, 113 of which were effective. The recovery rate is 100%. The TCM syndrome factors were regarded as common factors of CRF syndrome if the cumulative percentage was more than or equal to 60% and the coefficient of variation was less than or equal to 0.35. The syndrome factors related to the disease location were the kidney, spleen, stomach, heart, and lung; the syndrome factors related to the disease type were dampness, turbid toxin, blood stasis, water retention, and phlegm which belong to excess type, and qi deficiency, yin deficiency, yang deficiency, blood deficiency, and essence deficiency which belong to deficiency type., Conclusion: The common TCM syndrome factors of CRF were obtained from the representative experts through the questionnaire investigation among the experts. The results enable us to have a deeper understanding of the disease in view of TCM compared with the previous literature data and may contribute to the establishment of TCM syndrome diagnosis criteria of the disease in the future.

Objective: To study the effect of early continuous blood purification (CBP) in the treatment of post-traumatic pulmonary fat embolism in dog., Methods: Twelve healthy male mongrel dogs were randomly divided into two groups: group A received intramedullary reaming and bone cement injection of bilateral femurs (n=6), and group B received CBP simultaneously at the beginning of the same operation and continued until 120 minutes after the end of the operation (n=6). The changes in arterial blood gas and related cytokines were monitored at various time points. The animals were sacrificed 120 minutes after the operation, and the lungs were obtained for examination, and the amount of oil red O stained fat emboli was recorded., Results: In group A, the mean pulmonary arterial pressure (MPAP), pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) and extravascular lung water (EVLW) increased after the manipulation in single femur, and these changes persisted after the manipulation on both femurs (all P<0.05). There was a decrease in pH and arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) and an increase in arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO2), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) and IL-6 after the operation on both femurs, showing significant differences compared with those of pre-operation period (all P<0.05). In group B, the hemodynamics, contents of cytokines and arterial blood gases were stable. Compared with those of group A, there was a significant decrease in the number of pulmonary fat emboli in group B (4.17+/-1.99 vs. 18.13+/-6.25, P<0.05)., Conclusion: The therapy of CBP could decrease the level of the serum TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta , IL-6 and EVLW, MPAP, PCWP, which could ameliorate gas exchange and oxygenation of the lung. And it also could reduce the number of pulmonary fat emboli and decrease the incidence of pulmonary fat embolism caused by femoral intramedullary operation.

Anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria have evolved highly efficient systems-membrane-located pigment-protein complexes which can convert sunlight into chemical energy that they can use and also benefit other organisms. More and more attentions have been paid to pigment-protein complexes of anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria in recent years. We summarized the current opinions in the pigment-protein complexes from anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria, including their chemical compositions, crystal structures and functions, homology of protein sequence. In particular, we depicted the novel light-harvesting complexes namely LH3 and LH4. The problems and prospects about the pigment-protein complexes have also been addressed in this review.

Objective: To provided a reliable and sensitive method and a series of specific absorption spectra data of different carotenoids and bacteriochlorophylla in anxoygenic phototrophic bacteria, and reveal mechanism of regulation of photosynthetic pigments by light and oxygen in Rhodobacter azotoformans 134K20., Methods: The metabolic diversity of photopigments regulated by oxygen and light was investigated by means of UV-VIS spectra and thin layer chromatography., Results: The highest cell yield of strain 134K20 was obtained under aerobic conditions in the light. Nine types of photopigments including three yellow pigments, one red pigment, one purple pigment, two green pigments, and two blue pigments were synthesized, and yellow pigments synthetic genes were expressed on the higher level anaerobically in the light. Under aerobic conditions, the synthetic genes of two new red and one new purple pigment were triggered and expressed on the higher level, but the biosynthesis of yellow, blue and green pigments were inhibited by oxygen, another nine pigments including two yellow pigments, three red pigments, two purple pigments, one green pigment, and one blue pigment were synthesized. One yellow pigment was only produced in dark aerobic culture, the other pigments were the same as in dark aerobic cultures., Conclusion: PpsR photopigment suppression regulation system regulated expression of photosynthetic genes via light and oxygen in Rhodobacter azotoformans 134K20. The yellow and red pigments belong to carotenoid series. The first yellow pigment belongs to spheroidene series. The other two yellow pigments are new carotenoids. Yellow pigments are capable of dissolving in different organic solvents. Red pigments belong to new spheroidenone series. The three red pigments are different in polarity, peak shape and peak value. Fine structures of red pigments only are appeared in hexane. The purple pigmments with polarity are identified as bacteriopheophytins. The blue and green pigments are four kinds of bacteriochlorophyll a intermediates. Diethylether and methanol is suitable for carotenoids extraction. The identification of bacteriochlorophyll a intermediates can be easily performed by polarity analysis.

The modeling of signal transduction pathways is a task of systems biology. However, such a task is very difficult because of the structure complexity, the strong nonlinearity of signaling pathways and the noised and incomplete measurements. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm (LM algorithm) is applied to estimate the unknown parameters of the signaling pathways. With this method, the identifiability of unknown parameters is appraised, and the sensitivity equations of original model are evaluated. Then we append the sensitivity equations to the original model in order to form the augmented model, and we apply the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to the augmented model in order to estimate parameters. TNFalpha mediated NF-kappaB signaling pathway is taken as an example to illustrate the effectiveness of this method, and the simulation results are given.

Objective: To develop a rapid PCR method to detect pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila in fish., Methods: For multiple PCR, three pairs of primers were designed based on the conservative sequences of 16SrRNA genes, aerolysin (aer) gens and serine-protease (ahp) genes of Aeromonas hydrophila. By optimization of PCR conditions and estimation of specificity, sensitivity, detection rate, a triplex PCR assay was established., Results: The assay had a high specificity detecting only pathogenic strains of Aeromonas hydrophila but not other irrelative bacteria. The assay had a high sensitivity with the detection limit as low as 100 fg, the detection rate of suspicious clinical samples by this assay was 81.8%, which was noticeably higher than that by bacterial isolation method (40.9%). The detection rate of mimic challenge samples by this assay was 87.5%, which was also noticeably higher than that by bacterial isolation method (67.5%)., Conclusion: The simultaneous detection of 16SrRNA gene and two virulent genes in one PCR assay could avoid missed detection possibly caused by PCR with single virulent gene, and provided a useful tool for rapid diagnosis, large-scale quarantine, and epidemiological investigation of the pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila.

Objective: To study the applicability of MultiCalc software to prenatal screening of Down's syndrome in Jiangsu province, China., Methods: The gestational age-specific median of maternal serum marker was calculated by means of regression method. Regression functions for adjustment of Multiple of the Median (MoM) by weight were established for our own population., Results: Before the adjustment by weight, the average level of alpha fetal protein(AFP) was 16% higher and the free beta-human chorionic gonadotrophin (beta-hCG) was 14% higher than those of the Caucasian in MultiCalc software respectively. But when the AFP and free beta-hCG results were converted to weight-adjusted MoM levels, the values were 0.99 and 1.02 respectively. The median of MoM of AFP and the free beta-hCG were 1.00 through the regression model of gestational age and weight adjustment., Conclusion: There was no difference of average weight-adjusted MoM levels between the Jiangsu population and the Caucasian, and the MultiCalc software was applicable to maternal serum screening for Down's syndrome of Jiangsu.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of high-dose cytarabine (HD-Ara-C) based chemotherapy for post-remission treatment in patients with t(8;21) (q22;q22) AML-M2 and those with normal karyotype AML-M2., Methods: AML-M2 patients were grouped into with (21 cases) or without (23 cases) t(8;21) (q22;q22) karyotype groups. After achieved remission by induction therapy, all patients received four cycles of HD-Ara-C (3 mg/m2 per 12 hours by three-hour infusion day 1 to day 3) with either mitoxantrone (7 mg m(-2) d(-1)) or aclarubicin (30 mg m(-2) d(-1)) or etoposide (70 mg m(-2) d(-1)) for 3d as post-remission treatment., Results: Relapse rate in the t(8;21) and the normal karyotype groups was 29% and 57% respectively (P<0.05); 3 year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 71% and 43% respectively (P < 0.05). and 3 year over-all survival (OS) rate was 76% and 65% respectively (P >0.05)., Conclusion: Four cycles of high-dose cytarabine based combination chemotherapy as post-remission treatment improves long-term disease-free survival in patients with t(8;21) (q22;q22) AML-M2.

Objective: To observe the protective effects of resveratrol (RES) on the heart function of the rats with adriamycin-induced heart failure., Method: Thirty adult male SD rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: normal control (NC) group, adriamycin (ADR) group, RESL + ADR group, RES(H) + ADR group and RES group. RES of 30, 120, 120 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) was given intraperitoneally (ip) once a day for 3 days in RES(L) + ADR group, RES(H) + ADR group and RES group respectively. The other two groups were given the same amount of normal saline the same way. On the 4h day,ADR of 10 mg x kg(-1) was given intraperitoneally once to induce myocardium injury model. After twenty-four hours, the pathological and biochemical changes of the myocardium were examined., Result: As compared with NC group, the MDA, NO and NOS of the ADR group were significantly higher (P < 0.05), and the SOD of the ADR group were markedly lower (P < 0.05). As compared with ADR group, the indexes in RES(L) + ADR group, RES(H) + ADR group were exactly opposing, and took on dose dependance (P < 0.05). Light microscopic morphometry of the heart samples of the rats in ADR + RES(L, H) groups revealed typical diminishing of damage., Conclusion: RES can relieve the toxic effects of ADR on myocardium, and the cardioprotective effects may be correlated with its antioxidant activity and downregulation of NO.

Objective: To study the effects of resvaratrol derivatives on spontaneous HR and CF of isolated guinea pig atrium., Method: The dose-effect curve of resvaratrol was observed. The possible mechanism of potassium channels responsible for changes of CF and HR after administering with resvaratrol was measured., Result: Resvaratrol reduced the spontaneous HR and weakened the CF in a dose-dependent manner ranging from 10(-6) to 3 x 10(-4) mol x L(-1) (P < 0.05). As compared with Res group, the effects were partly blocked by Gli (P < 0.05) and TEA (P < 0.01), but not blocked by 4-AP, BaCl2, Atropine., Conclusion: Resvaratrol can induce negative chronotropic action and negative (inotropic action. The mechanism(s) may relate to the opening of K(ATP) and Kc(Ca).

Objective: To study the diagnostic value of double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) for small intestinal diseases., Methods: 155 patients clinically suspicious of small intestinal diseases were studied. 110 of them were male and 45 female. Their age ranged from 6 to 75 and with an average of 41 years. They consisted of 92 cases of small intestinal hemorrhage, 39 abdominal pain, 7 diarrhoea, 13 abdominal distention, 3 malnutrition and one diarrhoea as well as refractory hypoalbuminemia. In the procedure, the operator manipulated and advanced the endoscope and the assistant helped to advance the over tube., Results: Among the 155 cases lesions were found in 125 cases, with positive results accounting for 80.6%. These lesions mainly consisted of small intestinal ulcer (including Crohn's disease), chronic inflammation, Meckel's diverticulum, interstizialoma, vascular deformity and carcinoma of small intestine. In 84 of the 92 patients suspicious of intestinal hemorrhage the lesions were confirmed with a positive rate of 91.3%. In 24 of the 39 patients with abdomen pain the etiologies were confirmed with a positive rate of 61.5%. In 16 of the 23 patients with diarrhoea, abdominal distention and malnutrition the positive rate was 69.6%. The cause of the only one case with refractory hypoalbuminemia was confirmed. Among the 155 cases, 9 had lesions located in stomach and duodenum, 115 in small intestine and one in large bowel, no lesion was found in 30 cases. Among the patients, 43 were found to have small intestinal ulcer. In the 43 patients, 12 patients were with single intestinal ulcer and 31 with multiple. For cases of Meckel's diverticulum, interstizialoma, carcinoma, vascular deformity and intestinal adhesion of small intestine in this series, diagnoses made by DBE combined with morphology were completely consistent with those found in operation. However, for ulcer lesions (mainly Crohn's disease), there was diversity in the diagnoses between the two methods, the coincidence was 57.1%. Two patients had complication, one perforation of small intestine and the other acute intestinal stasis., Conclusions: DBE is efficient and safe for the diagnosis of small intestinal diseases, especially in confirming the lesions. However, for ulcer of small intestine, this method even combined with biopsy is sometimes unable to determine its nature, so surgery may be beneficial in this condition.
