To solve the problems of poor wettability and improve pad dyeing performance, wool fabrics were pretreated with hydroxylamine to remove bound lipids on the surface of wool and then modified with L-cysteine through disulfide bond breaking and reforming reactions. The effect of the concentration, pH, temperature, and treatment time of hydroxylamine or L-cysteine solutions on hydrophilicity of wool fabrics was investigated by single factor experiments. The performance of pad dyeing of the modified wool fabrics is also assessed. The results show that under the optimum process conditions, the absorption time of water is about 2 s. The optimum process conditions are: hydroxylamine 7% (owf), sodium hydroxide 16.7 x 10
-2 mol/ L, treatment at 70 °C for 40 min; L-cysteine 20 % (owf), ammonia water 4.7 x 10-2 mol/ L, treated at 60 °C for 30 min. After pad dyeing of reactive dyes, the K / S value of modified wool increase by 95. 5% when compared with unmodified wool fabrics. Besides, the dye distribution of fiber cross-section becomes uniform, and the rubbing fastness is also improved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published
