This study aims to identify the main chemical compounds, investigate the effects of different drying methods on the quality, and determine the appropriate drying method of Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium. UPLC-UV-Q-TOF-MS was employed to characterize and identify 35 main compounds, including phenylethanoid glycosides, flavonoids, and iridoids in Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium. A method for the simultaneous determination of 8 compounds with strong UV absorption and high content was established to evaluate the quality of Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium dried by different methods. UPLC-UV-Q-TOF-MS combined with principal component analysis(PCA) was employed to compare the Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium samples treated by microwave drying at different power(119, 231, and 385 W), drying in the shade, sun drying, and oven drying at different temperatures(50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 ℃). The total content of decaffeoyl acteoside, picroside Ⅲ, galuteolin, forsythin B, acteoside, isoacteoside, 6-hydroxyluteolin-7-glucoside, and caffeic acid in Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium, as well as the content of most compounds, decreased with the rise in drying temperature and with the decrease in microwave power. Considering the content of compounds, low carbon, and energy saving, microwave drying at 231 W, low-temperature drying, or natural drying is recommended for the production of Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium. This study provides a scientific basis for the selection of drying methods for Callicarpae Nudiflorae Folium at the place of origin and for the improvement of quality standards.

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a whole-process health education model among inpatients with ascites type of advanced schistosomiasis., Methods: A "admission-hospitalization-discharge" whole-process health education model was created, 101 inpatients with ascites type of advanced schistosomiasis were given the whole-process health education. The scores of schistosomiasis control knowledge, attitudes towards schistosomiasis control and healthy behaviors, and awareness of schistosomiasis control knowledge, correct rate of attitudes towards schistosomiasis control and correct rate of healthy behaviors were compared among inpatients with ascites type of advanced schistosomiasis before and after implementation of the whole-process health education., Results: The scores of schistosomiasis control knowledge, schistosomiasis control attitudes and healthy behaviors were all significantly higher among inpatients with ascites type of advanced schistosomiasis after implementation of the whole-process health education than before implementation ( Z = -7.688, -3.576 and -4.328, all P values < 0.01). In addition, the awareness of schistosomiasis control knowledge increased from 54.3% to 82.7% (χ 2 = 188.886, P < 0.01), and the correct rate of attitudes towards schistosomiasis control increased from 88.4% to 98.0% (χ 2 = 22.001, P < 0.01), while the correct rate of healthy behaviors increased from 48.2% to 59.7% (χ 2 = 11.767, P < 0.01)., Conclusions: The whole-process health education model may remarkably improve the awareness of schistosomiasis control knowledge and promote the formation of positive attitudes towards schistosomiasis control and correct behaviors among inpatients with ascites type of advanced schistosomiasis, which is of great significance to facilitate patients' cure.

Coronaviruses are RNA viruses. We should be alerted from the outbreak of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003, the discovery of the human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63) in 2004 and the pneumonia outbreak caused by the novel coronavirus in 2019 (2019-nCoV). Coronaviruses can adhere to mucous membranes of the eye, nose, mouth, respiratory tract and digestive tract through various media, which leads to inflammatory reaction, pulmonary fibrosis, kidney failure and death in severe cases. As an exposed organ, the eye can also be infected. With the progress of molecular technology and the in-depth research of coronaviruses, there have been seven known coronaviruses that can infect humans, among which HCoV-NL63, SARS-CoV and 2019-nCoV can cause eye diseases. This article summarizes and analyzes the latest research results at home and abroad concerning the structural characteristics, transmission routes, ocular pathogenic characteristics and treatment of HCoV-NL63, SARS-CoV and 2019-nCoV, in order to provide reference for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Objective To analyze the radiological features of idiopathic pediatric meningiomas and explore their relationships with pathological grading,misdiagnoses,and blood loss during surgery.Methods We retrospectively reviewed 29 cases of pathologically confirmed pediatric meningiomas with pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging in Beijing Tiantan Hospital from November 2014 to July 2018.We assessed the imaging features to explore their relationships with pathological grading,misdiagnoses,and blood loss during surgery. Results Among the 29 cases,7 intraparenchymal meningiomas,5 extraparenchymal meningiomas,4 ventricular meningiomas,and 1 transcranial meningioma were misdiagnosed.Tumor location was significantly associated with possibility of misdiagnoses( P =0.021),and intraparenchymal tumors were most likely to be misdiagnosed.Twelve patients had positive dural tail sign,and 4 of them were misdiagnosed;16 patients did not have dural tail sign,and 12 of them were misdiagnosed.Fisher exact test showed that positive dural tail sign was associated with decreased possibility of misdiagnoses(one-sided P =0.034).Univariable regression analysis showed that the feature of tumor surrounding arteries or interfering with veins( P =0.020)and the tumor maximum diameter( P =0.001)had positively linear relationships with blood loss volume during surgery.Combining these two variables,the multivariable regression model showed better fitting performance($R&#95;{ad}^2$=0.468).Conclusions Pediatric meningiomas are extremely rare,with scarce radiological characteristics.They are hard to diagnose,and the intraparenchymal meningiomas are very likely to be misdiagnosed and therefore should be treated with extra caution.Among all the radiological features,tumor surrounding arteries or interfering with veins and tumor maximum diameter were associated with increased blood loss during surgery.

Objective: To observe the effect of Fu's subcutaneous needling therapy on pain degree, quality of life, serum 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) in patients with intercostal pain after surgery for osteoporotic thoracic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) and explore the application value of Fu's subcutaneous needling in treatment of post-operative intercostal pain., Methods: A total of 60 patients with intercostal pain after OVCF surgery were divided into a medication group and a Fu's subcutaneous needling therapy group, with 30 cases in each group. In the medication group, zoledronic acid injection, salmon calcitonin injection, calcitonin D tablets and mecobalamin tablets were prescribed. The duration of treatment was 8 weeks. In the Fu's subcutaneous needling therapy group, on the base of treatment as the medicine group, Fu's subcutaneous needling therapy was provided for 2 weeks，once every other day. The needle is inserted 6 cm away from the most painful point. Separately, in 2, 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, as well as in 16 weeks after treatment, the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the generic quality of life inventory-74 (GQOLI-74) were adopted to evaluate intercostal pain and quality of life in the patients of both groups and analyze the incidence of adverse reaction. Radioimmunoassay was used to measure the levels of serum 5-HT and NPY., Results: Compared with the results before treatment, in 2, 4 and 8 weeks of treatment as well as in 16 weeks after treatment, VAS scores of both groups were all reduced ( P <0.05), GQOLI-74 scores increased obviously ( P <0.05) and the levels of serum 5-HT and NPY increased obviously ( P <0.05) in the two groups. In 2, 4 and 8 weeks of treatment as well as in 16 weeks after treatment, VAS score in the Fu's subcutaneous needling therapy group was lower than that in the medication group ( P <0.05), GQOLI-74 score and the levels of serum 5-HT and NPY were higher than those in the medication group ( P <0.05). During the treatment and in 16 weeks after treatment, the difference was not significant in the incidence of adverse reaction between the two groups ( P >0.05)., Conclusion: Fu's subcutaneous needling therapy can relieve intercostal pain and improves the quality of life in the patients after surgery for OVCF.

Objective: To explore the effect of Wei 's triple nine needling on visual acuity and visual field in patients with optic atrophy., Methods: A total of 90 patients with optic atrophy were randomized into an observation group and a control group, 45 cases in each one. Treatment of Wei 's triple nine needling combined with conventional medication were adopted in the observation group, conventional medication was given in the control group. Treatment for 4 weeks was required in both groups. Before treatment and 2, 4 weeks into treatment, the visual acuity and visual field were observed, and the clinical efficacy was evaluated in both groups., Results: The total effective rate was 57.8% (26/45) in the observation group, which was superior to 28.9% (13/45) in the control group ( P <0.05). After 2-week and 4-week treatment, the visual acuity was improved ( P <0.01), the mean defect (MD) of visual field was decreased ( P <0.01), the mean sensitivity (MS) of visual field was increased in the observation group ( P <0.05, P <0.01). After 2-week and 4-week treatment, the visual acuity and the MD of visual field were improved ( P <0.01, P <0.05), while the difference of MS of visual field compared before treatment had no statistical significance in the control group ( P >0.05). The improvement of visual acuity, MD and MS of visual field after 2-week and 4-week into treatment in the observation group were superior to those in the control group ( P <0.05, P <0.01)., Conclusion: Wei 's triple nine needling can effectively improve the visual acuity and the defect of visual field in patients with optic atrophy.

Objective: Peripheral nerve invasion (PNI) is associated with local recurrence and poor prognosis in patients with advanced gastric cancer. A risk-assessment model based on preoperative indicators for predicting PNI of gastric cancer may help to formulate a more reasonable and accurate individualized diagnosis and treatment plan. Methods: Inclusion criteria: (1) electronic gastroscopy and enhanced CT examination of the upper abdomen were performed before surgery; (2) radical gastric cancer surgery (D2 lymph node dissection, R0 resection) was performed; (3) no distant metastasis was confirmed before and during operation; (4) postoperative pathology showed an advanced gastric cancer (T2-4aN0-3M0), and the clinical data was complete. Those who had other malignant tumors at the same time or in the past, and received neoadjuvant radiochemotherapy or immunotherapy before surgery were excluded. In this retrospective case-control study, 550 patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent curative gastrectomy between September 2017 and June 2019 were selected from the Affiliated Hospital of Qingdao University for modeling and internal verification, including 262 (47.6%) PNI positive and 288 (52.4%) PNI negative patients. According to the same standard, clinical data of 50 patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent radical surgery from July to November 2019 in Qingdao Municipal Hospital were selected for external verification of the model. There were no statistically significant differences between the clinical data of internal verification and external verification (all P >0.05). Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to determine the independent risk factors for PNI in advanced gastric cancer, and the clinical indicators with statistically significant difference were used to establish a preoperative nomogram model through R software. The Bootstrap method was applied as internal verification to show the robustness of the model. The discrimination of the nomogram was determined by calculating the average consistency index (C-index). The calibration curve was used to evaluate the consistency of the predicted results with the actual results. The Hosmer-Lemeshow test was used to examine the goodness of fit of the discriminant model. During external verification, the corresponding C-index index was also calculated. The area under ROC curve (AUC) was used to evaluate the predictive ability of the nomogram in the internal verification and external verification groups. Results: A total of 550 patients were identified in this study, 262 (47.6%) of which had PNI. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that carcinoembryonic antigen level ≥ 5 μg/L (OR=5.870, 95% CI: 3.281-10.502, P <0.001), tumor length ≥5 cm (OR=5.539,95% CI: 3.165-9.694, P <0.001), mixed Lauren classification (OR=2.611, 95%CI: 1.272-5.360, P =0.009), cT3 stage (OR=13.053, 95% CI: 5.612-30.361, P <0.001) and the presence of lymph node metastasis (OR=4.826, 95% CI: 2.729-8.533, P <0.001) were significant independent risk factors of PNI in advanced gastric cancer (all P <0.05). Based on these results, diffused Lauren classification and cT4 stage were included to establish a predictive nomogram model. CEA ≥ 5 μg/L was for 68 points, tumor length ≥ 5 cm was for 67 points, mixed Lauren classification was for 21 points, diffused Lauren classification was for 38 points, cT3 stage was for 75 points, cT4 stage was for 100 points, and lymph node metastasis was for 62 points. Adding the scores of all risk factors was total score, and the probability corresponding to the total score was the probability that the model predicted PNI in advanced gastric cancer before surgery. The internal verification result revealed that the AUC of nomogram was 0.935, which was superior than that of any single variable, such as CEA, Lauren classification, cT stage, tumor length and lymph node metastasis (AUC: 0.731, 0.595, 0.838, 0.757 and 0.802, respectively). The external verification result revealed the AUC of nomogram was 0.828. The C-ndex was 0.931 after internal verification. External verification showed a C-index of 0.828 from the model. The calibration curve showed that the predictive results were good in accordance with the actual results ( P =0.415). Conclusion: A nomogram model constructed by CEA, tumor length, Lauren classification (mixed, diffuse), cT stage, and lymph node metastasis can predict the PNI of advanced gastric cancer before surgery.

Microplastics (MPs, particle size<5 mm), as a new pollutant, have attracted wide attention in recent years. The distributions of MPs in effluent of a sewage treatment plant (STP) were examined. Surface water, sediment, and freshwater organism samples were taken from the STP discharge outlet in the Lijiang River tributary (S1), the confluence of tributaries and main streams in the Lijiang River (S2), and downstream locations in the Lijiang River (S3). The impact of STP discharge effluent on the characteristics and spatial distribution of MPs pollution in freshwater organisms was studied. The results showed that the freshwater organisms had a probability of uptake of MPs by 94.2%. The mean abundance of MPs in S1 (2.7 n·ind -1 ) was significantly higher than that of S3 (1.9 n·ind -1 , P <0.05). The MPs found in S1 and S3 were mainly <0.10 mm, accounting for 46.0% and 30.5%, respectively. The fiber type of MPs was observed in the body of freshwater organisms. Polyethylene terephthalate was the major polymer form in S1 organisms, while polypropylene was the major polymer form in S3. The effluent discharged from the STP led to the accumulation of MPs in freshwater organisms.

Objective: To predict the changes in the prevalence of Schistosoma japonicum infections in humans and livestock in Hunan Province using the exponential smoothing model and the ARIMA model., Methods: The data pertaining to S. japonicum infections in humans and livestock in Hunan Province from 1957 to 2015 were collected, and the exponential smoothing model and the ARIMA model were created using the software Eviews and PASW Statistics 18.0. In addition, the effectiveness of these two models for the prediction of S. japonicum infections in humans and livestock in Hunan Province from 2016 to 2018 was evaluated., Results: The exponential smoothing model and the ARIMA model had a high goodness of fit for prediction of S. japonicum infections in humans and livestock in Hunan Province from 1957 to 2015. There was a linear trend in the prevalence of S. japonicum infections in humans and livestock in Hunan Province from 1957 to 2015. The prevalence of S. japonicum infections in humans predicted with the Brown's linear trend and the prevalence of S. japonicum infections in livestock predicted with the Holt's linear trend in Hunan Province from 2016 to 2018 fitted better the actual data than the ARIMA model; however, prediction of the ARIMA model indicated that the endemic situation of schistosomiasis remained at a low level in Hunan Province., Conclusions: At a low epidemic level, development of highly sensitive tools for monitoring schistosomiasis is urgently needed in Hunan Province to fit the current endemic situation, and the schistosomiasis control measures should be intensified to consolidate the control achievements.

As an ancient parasitic disease, schistosomiasis has been endemic in Dongting Lake areas for more than 2 100 years. In the early 20th century, the first human case of schistosomiasis in China was reported in Dongting Lake areas, which was paid extensive attention. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, large-scale schistosomiasis control activities were launched promptly in Dongting Lake areas, and great successes have been achieved following the three stages of control efforts, including the snail control-based stage, synchronous chemotherapy for humans and livestock-based control stage and infectious source control-based control stage. In 2015, transmission control of schistosomiasis was achieved in Hunan Province. This paper comprehensively describes the discovery and control of schistosomiasis, analyzes the challenges for the current schistosomiasis control programs and proposes the emphasis for future control activities in Dongting Lake areas, so as to provide insights into the schistosomiasis control program in this area.

Objective To evaluate the safety and effectiveness of oral midazolam sedation combined nitrous oxide sedation for reducing dental fear in children.Methods Totally 77 children with a Frankl's Behavior Rating Scale score of 1 were included in this study,among whom 41 received a total of 78 person-times of oral midazolam sedation (0.50-0.75 mg·kg -1 ) (midazolam group) and 36 children were treated with the combination of 0.4 mg/kg oral midazolam with 30%-40% nitrous oxide (totally 73 person-times)(combination group). At each visit,heart rate,arterial oxygen saturation,and treatments were recorded. The behaviors of children during the treatment were assessed by Frankl's Behavior Rating Scale,the completion of treatment was assessed by Houpt Scale,and the sedation status was assessed by Ramsay Scale. Telephone follow-up was performed to record the side effects 24 hours after treatment. Results The vital signs were stable among all the 77 subjects,with a Ramsay score of 2 or 3. In the midazolam group, the behaviors were cooperative in 52 person-times (66.7%) and not cooperative in 26 person-times (33.3%);the planned treatments were completed in 62 person-times (79.5%) and partially completed in 16 person-times(20.5%). In the combination group,the behaviors were cooperative in 56 person-times (76.7%) and not cooperative in 17 person-times (23.3%);64 person-times (87.7%) completed the planned treatments and 9 person-times (12.3%) partially completed the treatments. The success rates of sedation (χ 2 =1.87,P= 0.17) and treatment (χ 2 =1.83,P= 0.18) were not significantly different between these two groups. The median Frankl scale score was significantly higher in the combination group [3 (3,4)] than in the midazolam group [3 (2,4)] (Z=2.647,P=0.008]. The median score of Houpt scale in the combination group [5(4,6)] was also significantly higher than in midazolam group [5(3,5)] (Z=2.236,P=0.026]. In midazolam group,there were 7 person-times of dysphoria,3 person-times of diplopia,and 2 person-times of hiccough among 78 person-times;in the combination group,there were 5 person-times of dysphoria,5 person-times of diplopia,1 person-time of hiccough,and 2 person-times of vomit among 73 person-times of treatment. Thus,there was no significant difference in the incidence of side effects (15.4% vs.17.8%,χ 2 =0.160,P=0.689). Logistic regression analysis showed that the success rate of treatment was not associated with sex (OR=1.704,P=0.174),dose (OR=1.289,P=0.516),and treatment types (OR=0.555,P=0.143). Children over 3 years old had a significantly high success rate than those under 3 years old (OR=3.372,P=0.011). Conclusions Oral midazolam is safe and effective for reducing dental fear in children. The combination of oral midazolam with 30%-40% nitrous oxide can improve the behaviors of children during the dental treatment,especially in children over 3 years old.

This study conducted experiments using Stipa grandis, the dominant species of the typical steppe in Inner Mongolia. The research explored the different effects of mowing and grazing on organic carbon, total nitrogen, available nitrogen, total phosphorus and available phosphorus in rhizosphere and bulk soil. The results showed that: Both mowing and grazing inhibited assemble and storage capacity of rhizosphere, and decreased the organic carbon, total nitrogen, and available nitrogen contents in rhizosphere soil. The rhizosphere effect on total phosphorus in soil was found to be insignificant because of its high immobility. Available phosphorus in soil was distributed heterogeneously. Available soil phosphorus under mowing and grazing changed but the difference was not significant between rhizosphere and bulk soil. Grazing drastically reduced the number of soil microbes. The availability of soil nutrients was significantly correlated with soil microbial numbers. The status of soil nutrients could be more closely aligned with the change in bacteria and fungi. Grazing brought about greater soil nutrient loss and soil microbe loss than did mowing.

A well-replicated Abies fargesii tree-ring width chronology in the Shennongjia Mount was developed to investigate its radial growth response to climate variables (e.g., monthly mean tempe- rature and total precipitation) and other growing season indicators (e.g., cumulative temperature, continuous days, initial and final dates). Correlation analyses showed that the tree-ring width was positively correlated to the mean temperatures of February, April and September, and negatively correlated to the total precipitation of September, prior September and prior December. The analyses between the chronology and other growing season parameters showed that tree growth responded positively to the cumulative temperature and continuous days of the growing season. The correlation was the highest when the growing season was defined as the days above the temperature threshold of 9.0 °C. Defined this way, the growing season typically started in late-May and ended in mid-September, lasting about 120 days. Correlation analyses were also conducted between the tree-ring growth and the initial and final dates of the growing season. Results showed that correlation was the highest for initial dates defined at 9.0 °C (with the coefficient of -0.25 and p-value close to 0.05), and for final dates defined at 9.3 °C (with the coefficient of 0.33 and p-value less than 0.05). All these results indicated that the sensitive temperature threshold for photosynthesis of A. fargesii was around 9.0 °C. The year 1978 marked an abrupt shift of climate in southeast China. We compared A. fargesii growth between pre-1978 and post-1978 periods. Results showed that as temperature rose, the growing season was lengthened with both earlier initial dates and later final dates. Longer growing season increased the A. fargesii growth in the Shennongjia Mount, southeastern China.

Two robust Pinus taiwanensis Hayata tree-ring width chronologies were developed at high elevation sites in Jiulongshan Natural Conservation Area (JLS01), southeastern Zhejiang Province and Guniujiang (GNJ01), southern Anhui Province, China. The reliable period was 1884-2010 for JLS01 and 1837-2008 for GNJ01, based on subsample signal strength (SSS) threshold value of 0.8. Meteorological data were monthly mean temperature, monthly total precipitation and monthly mean relative humidity, monthly total cloud cover, as well as monthly sunshine duration. The data from the meteorological stations around the sampling sites were averaged to represent regional climate, which were used in the correlation analyses with the tree-ring chronologies. The correlation analyses indicated that summer (prior June-July and current June) hydrothermal condition was the main limiting factor on radial tree growth at the two high elevation sites. For JLS01 chronology, significant positive correlations were found with prior June-July temperature and sunshine duration, significant negative correlations with prior June-July and current June precipitation and relative hu- midity, and total cloud cover of prior July. GNJ01 chronology was significantly positively correlated with prior July temperature as well as prior July and current June sunshine duration, negatively correlated with prior July and current June precipitation and relative humidity, as well as total cloud cover of prior June. These results showed that relatively high temperature could promote radial growth, whereas high precipitation, together with high relative humidity, high cloud cover and low sunshine duration, could limit the photosynthesis and thus restrain the radial tree growth.

Objective: To clarify the role of socio-economy and management in the sustainable schistosomiasis-control in Taoyuan County, an endemic area in hilly region, Hunan Province, China., Methods: From 1996 to 2011, the data of socio-economy, the management of schistosomiasis control organizations, environment, and the changes in schistosomiasis prevalence were collected in Taoyuan County where schistosomiasis transmission had been controlled since 2008. A sampling survey of schistosomiasis prevalence of human and bovine was performed in 2011 to verify the current status of schistosomiasis transmission. All the data were analyzed statistically to evaluate the role of socio-economy and management in the sustainable schistosomiasis control., Results: During the period from 1998 to 2012, the socio-economy including the residents' productive mode and daily life in Taoyuan County improved dramatically, but the recurrence risk of schistosomiasis endemic still existed due to the retuning of out-going workers and the migrating population. Moreover, the introduction of exotic species of plants and animals may increase the risk. The low running cost of schistosomiasis control organization as well as the efficient and adequate resource allocation in the county was in line with the national requirement to strengthen the rural grass-roots public health system., Conclusion: The harmonious development of socio-economy and the scientific and efficient health system in Taoyuan County are the key factors for the sustainable transmission control of schistosomiasis.

Objective: To investigate the structural and functional changes of internal anal sphincter (IAS) in children with functional constipation (FC), and to evaluate the association between the thickness of IAS and the severity of clinical symptoms., Methods: A total of 35 children with FC(constipation group,17 with incontinence) between June 2008 and December 2008 at the Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University were evaluated using anal manometry and endosonography. These patients were compared to 23 hospitalized children who were excluded for digestive and endocrinal diseases(control group). A validated symptom score(SS) was used to assess the severity of symptoms. The sum of SS ranged between 0 and 65., Results: Anorectal manometry showed reflex relaxation of IAS in response to distension of rectal balloon in all patients. Rectal perceptional threshold in FC group was significantly higher than that in the controls[(42.4 ± 19.5) ml vs.(29.1 ± 15.6) ml, P<0.05]. The lowest volume for inducing reflex relaxation of IAS was significantly higher than that in the controls [(55.6 ± 31.6) ml vs.(30.5 ±13.8) ml, P<0.05]. The thickening of IAS was noted in all the patients[(3.8 ± 1.7) mm vs.(2.5 ± 1.0) mm, P<0.05]. However, there was no significant difference between FC and control in median resting anal sphincter pressure[(170.8 ± 62.3) mm Hg vs. (161.3 ± 51.1) mm Hg, P>0.05]. The median symptom score was 9.3 ± 4.3 in the FC group. The thickness of IAS correlated significantly with total symptom severity score(r=0.407, P<0.05). There was no correlation between thickness of IAS and age, sex, or duration of disease(P>0.05)., Conclusions: Structural and functional changes of internal anal sphincter exist in children with functional constipation. The thickness of internal anal sphincter correlates significantly with symptom severity.

Desert steppe is very vulnerable to climate change. The herders caring for their livestock in such a natural environment have to face the challenges of rapid climate change. In this paper, a household-level questionnaire was conducted in the Suniteyou District of Inner Mongolia, China, aimed to analyze the herders' perceptions and adaptation strategies to climate change, extreme climate events in particular. In this Steppe where precipitation is rare and meteorological disasters are frequent, drought is the main extreme climate event with the broadest affecting area, the highest affecting degree, and the greatest frequency. The sensitivity of the herders to drought is far higher than that to other extreme climate events, and also, the perceptions to drought induce the herders having deep perceptions to the extreme climate events such as strong wing, dust storm, and heavy snow. Relative to the perceptions to long-term climate change, the perceptions to short-term climate change are more deep and precise. The herders can estimate the long-term climate change trend according to their perceptions to the latest 10 years climate change. They attribute the poor livestock health and the reduced forage yield greatly to climate change. Yet, the herders are inexperienced in implementing efficient adaptation strategies. Generally, their adaptation measures are quite simplex and rather passive.

Objective: To investigate the effect of oral alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) supplement on brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), supine systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in overweight/obese individuals. An 8-week double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled and cross-over trial with a 4-week washout between cross-over periods., Methods: Sixty-three males and 40 females aged 22 - 57 years old who met the inclusion criteria as (1) Han ethnicity; (2) 20 - 60 years old; (3) BMI ≥ 25 kg/m(2) and having at least one of the following risk factors: borderline hypertension (130 mm Hg ≤ SBP < 140 mm Hg and/or 85 mm Hg ≤ supine DBP< 90 mm Hg), dyslipidemia (fasting total cholesterol ≥ 5.2 mmol/L or HDL-C < 1.04 mmol/L), or impaired fasting glucose (6.1 mmol/L ≤ fasting glucose < 7.0 mmol/L); (4) Not on any antioxidant vitamin supplement. They were randomly assigned to Group 1 or Group 2 in a 1:1 ratio balanced for gender. Group 1 received 8 weeks ALA (1200 mg/day) followed by 4-week washout period and followed by another 8 weeks placebo; while Group 2 received 8 weeks placebo (1200 mg/day) followed by 4-week washout period, and followed by ALA treatment for 8 weeks. BaPWV and supine blood pressure were measured at the beginning of 1(st) phase and 2(nd) phase and at the endpoint of the whole trial. Mixed effect linear regression model was performed to compare the change of baPWV and supine blood pressure between ALA group and placebo group., Results: BaPWV decreased -33.03 cm/s ± 130.70 cm/s for ALA group and increased 5.66 cm/s ± 139.89 cm/s for placebo group, supine systolic blood pressure decreased -4.09 mm Hg ± 9.18 mm Hg for ALA group and -2.32 mm Hg ± 8.16 mm Hg for placebo group. Supine diastolic blood pressure decreased -1.29 mm Hg ± 6.55 mm Hg for ALA group and -0.48 mm Hg ± 6.63 mm Hg for placebo group. These three mix-effect models did not show significant effect of ALA treatment after adjustment on baseline values, sex, age, treatment sequence or period., Conclusion: The current trial did not provide evidence that oral intake of ALA for 8 weeks had significant effects on lowering baPWV, supine systolic blood pressure or supine diastolic blood pressure.

Multistage sampling techniques are widely applied in the cross-sectional study of epidemiology, while methods based on independent assumption are still used to analyze such complex survey data. This paper aims to introduce the application of weighted estimation methods for the complex survey data. A brief overview of basic theory is described, and then a practical analysis is illustrated to apply to the weighted estimation algorithm in a stratified two-stage clustered sampling data. For multistage sampling survey data, weighted estimation method can be used to obtain unbiased point estimation and more reasonable variance estimation, and so make proper statistical inference by correcting the clustering, stratification and unequal probability effects.

To explore the relationship between the genetic diversity and biological functional site of human immunodeficiency virus HIV-1 gp120 and the pathogenesis of AIDS dementia complex (ADC), the full length sequences of gp120 gene was amplified with PCR from genomic DNA which was extracted from lymphoid and different brain department (periaortic lymphoid, temporal gray/white matter junction, periventricular tissue, choroids plexus, occipital white matter and occipital gray/white matter junction.) of a patient who died of ADC. PCR products were cloned into the pGEM-T vector and positive clones were sequenced. The analysis of neighbor-joining tree, N-glycosylation sites, values of ds/dn, and loop were then all performed. The samples were all identified as HIV-1 B and genetic variation existed in HIV-1 gp120 isolated from different tissues. Compared with standard HIV-1B gp120, biological functional sites of HIV-1 gp120 isolated from the patient changed to some extent. In addition, there were differences in some biological functional sites of HIV-1 gp120 between lymphoid and brain. Therefore, genetic diversity and alterations of some biological functional sites of HIV-1 gp120 might be associated with the pathogenesis of ADC.

Objective: To study clinical and imaging features of hypothalamic hamartoma in children., Methods: Imaging findings and clinical manifestations of 38 children with hypothalamic hamartomas were retrospectively reviewed. The patients included 25 boys and 13 girls, ranging in age of onset from 1 month to 15 years. All the 38 patients were examined with pre-contrast and post-contrast T1 weighted MR imaging and with non-contrast T2 weighted MR imaging. Meanwhile, 10 patients received CT scan. Hypothalamic hamartomas were confimed by pathologic examinations in the 38 patients., Results: Gelastic epilepsy, precocious puberty, other types of epilepsy and disturbance of intelligence were main manifestations in the 38 patients. Gelastic epilepsy was found as an initial clinical symptom in 17 cases, precocious puberty in 13 cases and other types of epilepsy in 8 cases. All masses were located in the suprasellar and interpeduncular cistern. They showed iso-density on CT scan, and homogeneous signal iso-intense to gray matter on T1 and T2 weighted MR images. With contrast MR images, there was no enhancement in the mass. The size or pedunculation of the mass was not correlated with clinical features., Conclusions: Hypothalamic hamartoma may be characterized by precocious puberty and/or gelastic epilepsy and specific imaging findings mentioned above.

Objective: To study the clinical value of 1H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) in differential diagnosis of brain low-grade gliomas and demyelinating diseases., Methods: 1H-MRS was performed in 24 patients with low-grade gliomas and 22 patients with demyelinating diseases and the results were retrospectively reviewed. The metabolites including N-acetyl aspartate (NAA), choline (Cho), and creatine (Cr) were detected in different areas including lesions and the normal brain. The ratios of NAA/Cr, NAA/Cho, and Cho/Cr were also computed., Results: Compared with the normal brain tissue, low-grade gliomas and demyelinating diseases had significantly different ratios of NAA/Cr, NAA/Cho, and Cho/Cr (P < 0.05). The ratios of NAA/Cho and Cho/Cr were significantly different between low-grade gliomas and demyelinating diseases (P < 0.05), while the ratio of NAA/Cr was not significantly different (P > 0.05)., Conclusions: The ratio of NAA/Cho and Cho/Cr is remarkably different between low-grade gliomas and demyelinating diseases. It can a useful indicator for differential diagnosis of these two diseases by 1H-MRS.

Objective: To provide reference data for enacting and revising the laws and regulations of the disability expertise., Methods: The epidemiological features of the disabled caused by road traffic accident in Shanghai during 2005 were retrospectively analyzed., Results: The most common injuries were in extremities (53.3%), followed by head (23.3%), spine (9.7%), thorax (5.8%), and abdomen (4.4%). The cumulative incidence rate of disability due to traffic injuries was 414.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, higher for men (505.7/100,000) than women (318.7/100,000). The highest incidence rate of disability was between age 35 and 59 (538.2/100,000). The most disabled was bicyclist, followed by pedestrian., Conclusion: The incidence rate of disability among 35-59 age group was the highest in Shanghai during 2005. It has resulted in loss of labor force with a negative effect on the economic development.

The degree of periportal fibrosis, hepatic parenchymatous fibrosis and the diameter of portal vein in fishermen from highly endemic area of schistosomiasis japonica in Dongting Lake region were measured. The results showed a significant correlation between the degree of periportal fibrosis and parenchymatous fibrosis and the portal venous diameter with a correlation coefficient of 0.375 and 0.332 respectively. The authors consider that the diameter of the portal vein can be used to assess the hepatic morbidity of patients.

The determination of elements in Euonymus alatus by ICP-AES was carried out in the present paper. The Euonymus alatus samples were digested by microwave digestion technique. The optimized conditions of microwave digestion procedure obtained by orthogonal array design were as follows: the volume ratio of HNO3-HCl is 2 : 1; the ratio of liquid/solid is 100 : 1; the sample particle size is 100-140 mesh. ICP-AES method was applied to the determination of ten trace elements in the sample, and was compared with AAS. The results showed that the method was rapid and simple with the relative standard deviations between 0.5%-6.2%, and the recovery between 85.5% and 105.6%.

A microwave digestion procedure was developed for the determination of trace Zn, Mn, Cd and Pb in aloe-leaf cuticle and aloe-leaf gelatin, using the obturated vessel microwave digestion system with a pressure controlling part, and the amounts of these trace metallic elements were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry after microwave digestion. The effects of the composition of digestion solution, the ratio of the sample to digestion solution, and the digestion time were studied. It is satisfactory to apply the microwave digestion procedure to the determination of Zn, Mn, Cd and Pb under the optimized condition with the recovery of 95.0% to 110.0% and RSD of 0.3% to 6.2%. The results show that this method is rapid and simple with low environmental contamination and complete digestion of the sample.

Objective: To observe the specific antibody level and reduction of egg-laying induced by a recombinant Schistosoma japonicum 26 kDa GST antigen (rSjc26 GST) in water buffaloes., Methods: 20 water buffaloes were randomly divided into two groups, the vaccination group and control group, with 10 buffaloes each. The subjects in vaccination group were immunized with rSjc26 GST antigen while the control received adjuvant only. After challenged with S. japonicum cercariae, the anti-rSjc26 GST antibody level and the numbers of eggs and miracidia in stool were detected., Results: The anti-rSjc26 GST antibody appeared 1 month after immunization with rSjc26 GST antigen and maintained a high level for 12 months. Numbers of eggs (EPG) and miracidia (MPG) in vaccination group were significantly lower than those in control group during the period of day 50 to day 90 post-challenge. However, EPG and MPG tended to decrease starting from day 100 post challenge in both groups. The difference of EPG and MPG between the two groups diminished progressively, and both groups showed zero egg count from day 330 on post challenge., Conclusion: The specific anti-rSjc26 GST antibody was detected in vaccinated water buffaloes and maintained a high level for 12 months. The vaccination showed a significant effect to the reduction of ovulation in the first three months after S. japonicum cercariae challenge.

Dopamine(DA) is a neurotransmitter, but it also serves as a neurotoxin under certain pathological conditions. Accumulating evidences indicate that DA plays an important role in ischemic cerebral damage. The mechanism by which DA exacerbates the neuronal damage remains unclear. Many mechanisms have been proposed to explain the DA neurotoxicity. One possibility is that DA leads to the formation of free radicals which are cytotoxic. Another possibility is that direct dopamine receptor stimulation may mediate dopaminergic neurotoxicity. It is also possible that DA modulates excitotoxicity of excitatory amino acid.

Fifty cases of male sexual dysfunction were analyzed in order to investigate the incidence and causes of the erectile dysfunction in the different injuries. The results showed that the incidence of erectile dysfunction of the patients with brevic fracture and urethra injury is 62.50%, main caused by the damage of pudendal nervous and arterial system. The incidence in the patients with the spinal fracture and light spinal cord injury is 50%, caused by the damage of nervous system. The erection in the 17 cases of the patients with only one testis injury is normal. Two cases with bilateral testis injury have suffered from erectile dysfunction.
