Objective: To investigate the effect of preventive moxibustion at the acupoint of 'Guanyuan" (CV 4) on the stress-related hormones, proteins and genes in natural menopausal rats, and explore its protective mechanism., Methods: One hundred and twenty eight healthy female SD rats were used in this study, in which 16 rats aged 4 months were used as normal control group, the rest 10-month-old rats with disorder of estrus cycle were randomly divided into 7 groups, including 4 control groups at the age of 10, 12, 14 and 16 months, and 3 preventive moxibustion groups at the age of 12, 14 and 16 months, 16 cases in each group. The 10-month-old rats were treated with preventive moxibustion at the acupoint of "Guanyuan" (CV 4), twice a week for 8 weeks consistently, then observed on the following 12, 14 and 16 months. Its effects on the level of heat shock protein 70 (HSP 70), heat shock protein 70 mRNA (HSP 70 mRNA), corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), beta-endorphin (beta-EP), adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) in the different nuclei of hypothalamus were examined with radio-immunity, immunohistochemistry or in situ hybridization methods., Results: In the control groups, the expression of HSP 70 and HSP 70 mRNA was increased in paraventricular, arcuate and supraoptic nucleus, the level of CRH, beta-EP was showed with declining trend in volatility, while the content of ACTH was increased. In comparison to the same-aged control groups, the preventive moxibustion groups were showed that the expression of HSP 70 in the 14-month-old group was lower and the expression of HSP 70 mRNA in the 12 and 16-month-old group was significantly higher in the paraventricular nucleus (all P < 0.05), the expression of HSP 70 in the 12 and 14-month-old groups and HSP 70 mRNA in the 12-month-old group was significantly increased in the arcuate nucleus (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), while the expression of HSP 70 in the 14-month-old group and HSP 70 mRNA in the 12 and 16-month-old group was significantly decreased in the supraoptic nucleus (all P < 0.05), the content of CRH and ACTH decreased significantly in 14-month group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), but the content of beta-EP obviously went up in the 12-month-old group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Preventive moxibustion at the acupoint of "Guanyuan" (CV 4) can regulate the expression of stress proteins, genes and hormones in the hypothalamus for the natural menopausal rats, which might be playing a protective role.

Objective: To observe the clinical effects and the serous estradiol change of patients with menopause syndrome using Xianling Gubao capsules for treatment., Method: 110 patients with manopause syndrome who were diagnosized by clinic index were recruited for the study. They were divided into two groups randomly. The treatment group were dealed with Xianling Gubao capsules and the control group with placebo of starch capsules for 8 weeks. The menopausal Kupperman index was used to assess change in menopausal symptoms before and after treatment. At the same time, serous estradiol and the thickness of uterine endometrium was evaluated., Result: The Kupperman index were improved apparently in treatment group after treatment (P < 0.01). The serous estradiol level of treatment group was increased apparently after treatment (P < 0.05). However, There were no statistical deference in the thickness of uterine endometrium in the treatment and the control group before and after treatment., Conclusion: The treatment using Xianling Gubao capsules for patients with menopause syndrome could improve the clinic symptoms, increase the serous estradiol level, but do not increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia.

Objective: To explore the effect of equol of a isoflavone metabolite on menopausal women and the menopausal syndrome., Methods: 71 menopausal women living in Harbin were assessed, and the participants were at the age of 45-55 years. The concentrations of Isoflavone and equol in first-void morning urines were analyzed by HPLC. All participants completed Kupperman questionnaire tables which were used to evaluate the severity of menopausal symptoms. The association between the equol concentrations in menopausal women and the menopausal syndrome were examine by statistical analysis method., Results: The negative association between the urinary equol concentrations and the menopausal index score (P < 0.05) were found, and the negative correlation only exists in EP group after grouping at the concentration of 0.5 microg/ml equol., Conclusion: It was suggested that it were more higher of urinary equol concentration in menopausal women, more less of the menopausal symptoms.

Objective: To investigate the effect of the course and menopause on the change of bone mineral density (BMD) in female patients with hyperthyroidism., Methods: BMDs of hip and lumbar vertebrae were measured by dual-energy X-rays absorptiometry(DEXA) in the female patients (n=192, aged 14 approximately 72). Patients were divided into 2 groups (premenopausal and postmenopausal)and 2 subgroups(short-course and long-course). The BMDs were compared between those of age-matched, weight-matched, height-matched and body mass index matched control subgroups., Results: In the premenopausal hyperthyroidic patients, only the BMDs of the second and total lumbar vertebrae with long-course were significantly lower than those of short-course group(P< 0.05). In the post-menopausal group with the long-course,each BMD measured had a lower level compared with that with short-course, of which the hip and the second lumber vertebrae were evident (P< 0.01)., Conclusion: The course and menopause have an effect on the BMDs in female patients with hyperthyroidism.

Objective: To investigate prospectively the annual bone loss rate at spine, proximal femur and distal radius in females and its relationship to relevant factors., Methods: The bone mineral density (BMD) at anteroposterior lumber, proximal femur and distal radius in 220 women of Mawangdui Township, aged 36 - 60, was measured twice, March to April 2000 and March to April 2004, using a Hologic QDR 4500A fan beam X-ray bone densitometer., Results: The annual bone loss rate was the highest during the period of 1 to 5 years since menopause, showing an annual bone loss of 1.70% at the anteroposterior spine, and 2.21%, 1.92%, and 1.56% at the femoral neck, greater trochanter, and distal radius respectively. Even before menopause bone loss was found at the femoral neck and distal radius. BMD loss at the anteroposterior spine and greater trochanter was found in the peri-menopause group. The bone loss rate was the highest in the early menopause group (1.56%/year, P < 0.01), and became lower, however, not significantly in the late menopause group (0.38%/year, P > 0.05). Age was positively correlated with the annual bone loss rates at the anteroposterior spine, greater trochanter, and distal radius (gamma = 0.223 - 0.547, P < 0.05 - 0.01), and the number of year since menopause was also positively correlated with the annual bone loss rate at anteroposterior spine and greater trochanter (gamma = 0.432 - 0.569 P < 0.05 - 0.01). However, body weight and body mass index were negatively correlated with the annual bone loss rates at the anteroposterior spine, femoral neck, and greater trochanter (gamma = 0.239 - 0.466, P < 0.05 - 0.01)., Conclusion: Annual bone loss varies at different skeletal region. Age, years since menopause, and body weight influence the bone loss at different skeletal regions in females.

Estrogen and progesterone receptor levels (ER and PR) were measured in 21 specimens of cervical carcinoma and in 17 normal cervix by monoclonal enzyme immunoassay (ER-EIA and PR-EIA). In normal cervix, 88.2% of specimens were ER-positive (more than 15 fmol/mg protein), 74.5% were PR-positive (more than 15 fmol/mg protein) and 74.5% were both ER and PR-positive. In cervical cancer, 66.7% of malignancies were ER-positive, 42.9% were PR-positive and 38.1% were both ER and PR-positive. There was no significant difference in ER status between the normal cervix and cervical cancer (P > 0.05), but PR status and levels in normal cervix were significantly higher than those in cervical carcinoma (P < 0.05). ER levels in squamous cell carcinoma was not correlated to the tumor stage, histologic grade and menopausal status. PR levels in premenopausal patients with squamous cell carcinoma were significantly higher than those in postmenopausal patients (P < 0.01). Adenocarcinoma of the cervix contained significantly more ER and PR than squamous cell carcinoma (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). In addition, serum E2 level was also assayed in 21 patients with cervical cancer. There was significant difference in E2 levels between the premenopausal and postmenopausal patients (P < 0.01). Patients were stratified according to E2 levels, a significant difference in PR level and in ratio of PR/ER was noted (P < 0.05, P < 0.01).
