Promoting community engagement is a key issue in the sustainable development of protected natural areas. Enhancing the local residents' sense of place identity contributes to their willingness to protect the ecological environment and increases their support for ecotourism development. The role of knowledge in addressing ecological issues is widely recognized, and tourism, which focuses on knowledge production and dissemination, is gradually emerging as an alternative choice for innovative and sustainable ecotourism development in protected natural areas. However, the effect of knowledge on place identity has not been sufficiently addressed. This study employed a qualitative research method and considered Danxia Mountain, a protected area, as a case study to analyze the transformation of knowledge underlying tourism products during the transition from sightseeing tourism to study tourism. Furthermore, it explored how the behavior of community residents in learning and disseminating new knowledge contributes to the reconstruction of their local identities. The findings showed that the knowledge of resource classification and evaluation of sightseeing tourism generated a paradoxical place identity, whereas the scientific and local knowledge about Danxia Mountain for tourism reconnected community residents to the place and established a place identity. The formation and changes of local residents' place identity are the result of the interactive process of knowledge's definition of place differences and the behaviors of learning and disseminating knowledge. Specifically, there are three aspects to consider: 1) Place differences and place meanings stemming from knowledge discourse. The knowledge of a place defines its differences and assigns meaning to it. Moreover, the type of knowledge of a place can change, triggering the reconstruction of the place identity of local residents. 2) Place identity arises from the learning, internalization, and construction processes of local residents in relation to place differences and meanings within the knowledge framework. This is achieved through transforming diverse individuals' experiences and feelings about a place, where meaningful and comprehensible identities are formed, leading to a diversified sense of place identity based on individual experiences. 3) Identity performance in the process of knowledge dissemination and sharing socializes individual place identities and establishes a collective place identity. This research combines knowledge as the discourse defining place differences and the behavioral interactions of using knowledge, which expands the understanding of the process and mechanisms of place identity and can provide a more comprehensive explanatory framework for establishing place identity in social-place-individual interaction. It also provides practical guidance for cultivating local residents' place identity through knowledge-based study tourism, which requires incorporating the knowledge of community residents into the heritage site's knowledge system as well as community residents as active participants in the learning and dissemination of knowledge in the context of study tourism, which is essential for fostering a sense of place identity.

- Abstract
Using Yuanjia Village in Liquan County, Shaanxi Province, China as a case study, this paper uses qualitative research methods to analyze the place identity construction of rural in‐ coming tourism entrepreneurs from the perspective of everyday life. The results show that the in‐ coming tourism entrepreneurs in Yuanjia Village have a strong emotional attachment to rural pastoral life, which is expressed through the everyday life worlds of rural areas consisting of every‐ day livelihood, everyday communication and everyday concepts. In the everyday life worlds of rural areas, the incoming tourism entrepreneurs are continuously shaping the life imagination and identity cognition after escaping from urban modernity. With the increase of everyday inter‐ active practice in the destination of incoming tourism entrepreneurs, identity will also be gradual‐ ly transformed and endowed with placeness, further stimulating the positive behavior of individu‐ als to the destination. Place is an aggregate of meanings based on the emotional connection between people and a physical locality, fraught with social and cultural significances. It provides a spatial anchor for memory construction, value perception, and emotional experience for individuals and groups. Among the variegated factors that contribute to the construction of place, collective memory assumes a prominent role. On the one hand, local material conditions and landscapes provide clues and references to the past, essential for the construction of collective memory. Conversely, collective memory is embedded in the ongoing negotiation and production of locality and spaces, which contributes to specific ways of narrating a fluid and dynamic place identity. Taking Xinzhuang Village in Binchuan County, Yunnan Province as a case study, this article analyzes the process of place reconstruction based on local collective memory in the context of red tourism development, focusing on its specific spatial manifestations of memory and analyzing how collective memory participates in the production of local cultural identities. The fieldwork results show that different local actors in the village participate in the remaking of collective memory differently and with different priorities. The reconstruction of collective memory is accompanied by the continuous negotiation of identity, social relations, and communal organization. Collective memories give rise to shared patterns of everyday life and symbolization: reconciling the relationships between different groups. Specific attributes of place provide the basic building blocks of collective memory, which in turn reshapes material spaces and local cultural performances. Place identity, and vice versa, continuously strengthen collective memory in the construction of a red tourism destination. Collective memories facilitate the creation of a renewed local context. In this context, collective memories are performed and regenerated in embodied practices such as rituals and tourism behaviors, which constantly inject new cultural connotations into place reconstruction. At the same time, collective memory continuously guides spatial practices and the production of social and material spaces. This paper concludes that place elements not only trigger the recall, storage, and recreation of memory in the context of red tourism but also express the local characteristics, cultures, and identities reconstructed by collective memory. In this process, the landscape construction of Xinzhuang village endows collective memory with stability and persistence, and we argue that place concretizes and contextualizes collective memories. Thus, the interaction between memory and place both enhances the place identity and memory, especially for those who inhabit the place. The cultural landscapes, and local discourses constructed by collective memory have become the most significant local attributes in the process of expressing placeness. In response to the view that the place is understood as continuous change and dynamic construction, this paper understands collective memories as fluid, dynamic and socially negotiated, and clarifies the dialectical, mutually constitutive relationships between place and memory. It addresses the relative dearth of research on the construction and reconstruction of collective memory from the perspective of place and place identity.

"Place identity" is an important concept that measures personal place emotion and reflects the complicated dynamic relationship between personal identity and one's local environment. Enterprise communities (ECs) are a major type of gated, walled-off residential spaces. They were built and managed mostly by the state or collectively owned enterprises during the planning economy period, and many are still employed in urban China. Understanding the place identity of EC residents is of great significance for community renewal, neighborhood revitalization, and sustainable urban development. Using the Northwestern First Printing and Dyeing Factory community as a typical example, this paper uncovers the changes and mechanisms of personal place identity under the influence of social environment changes and community transformation using grounded theory, while discussing its policy implications. The main results are as follows: first, 13 open coding items, such as cognitive change of identity, reduced familiarity, weakened social interaction, and dilapidated housing construction were defined; further, four axial codings, including personal identity changes, emotional memory changes, identity change in social life, and physical environment identity, were set, and an analysis framework on the change of residents' place identity in the ECs (selective coding) was built. Second, the residents' personal awareness in ECs has changed from Danwei people in the era of planned economy to social people in the market economy period and to left-behind elderly groups in the future. Third, inherited collective memory maintains the residents' positive place identity. Alienation of social interaction and socialization of community management weaken place identity. The dilapidated material environment and backward support facilities cause the residents to experience negative identity. Fourth, residents build their own and local identity in the interaction between the EC environment and society that accompanies their life and growth, and the identity changes along with the variation of external social environment and internal individual characteristics. External factors such as state-owned enterprise reform and housing policies have led to enterprise transitions and changes in social space in the ECs, affecting residents' emotional experience and identity. Internal factors such as length of residence, individual characteristics, psychological factors, and individual experiences all have an effect on identity. These jointly shape the residents' place identity and can alter its processes. Finally, this work is helpful in providing insight into socialist work-unit communities for Chinese transformation and renewal, deepens the understanding of traditional residential space succession theory arising from residential suburbanization, residential segregation, inner-city renewal, gentrification, and polarization of living space, enriches the case types of place identity theory in view of the unique value and function of the ECs, and provides a reference to carry out the renewal of old communities more successfully.

Using qualitative research methods and taking Wulin in Jinjiang, Quanzhou City as an example, this study investigated the construction characteristics of Qiaoxiang's place meaning superposition from three aspects: entity dimension, social relations and local values, and revealed the superposition process of the place meaning of Qiaoxiang under the background of tourism development and the resulting place identity problems of different subjects including overseas Chinese. The study found that: (1) The superposition of place meaning under the dislocation of man and land is mainly completed through transmission mechanisms such as imagination and tourism system, which makes the overseas Chinese "absent in form" but "present everywhere in content" in Qiaoxiang, and promotes the transformation of Wulin into a place pattern mixed with tradition and modernity. (2) The superposition of place meaning has the attribute of relationship, and multivariate interactions are the remarkable features during its formation. The place meaning is essentially a manifestation of the man-land relationship. When the man-land relationship is no longer determined by the traditional geographic relationship or kinship, the weak bond relationship between man and land cannot be consolidated by the place meaning, which is manifested as the alienation of the relationship of "overseas Chinese-family members-hometown". (3) In terms of local values, the place meaning of Qiaoxiang has experienced a meaning superposition from the home scale to the national and ethnic scales, highlighting the selective representation of power on the place meaning in the context of tourism, and dynamically displaying the controversy on the orientation of spatial values of different subjects and the guidance of the national mainstream cultural values to the local. (4) In the context of tourism development, the superposition of the place meaning of Qiaoxiang has triggered the instrumental and selective "shopping cart" identity of overseas Chinese and the differentiated identity of local residents, and the identity structure of different subjects is full of tension, differentiation and even conflict.

The protection, activation, and utilization of the cultural heritage has attracted increasing attention from the international community. Cultural heritage is an important carrier for inhabitants to promote their local identity and express the emotions and geographical memory of local communities. The Linear Cultural Heritage Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, which once played an important historical role, is at the critical point between decline and revival. With its traffic and economic function declining daily, its heritage value is gradually being manifested in people's nostalgic mood and emotional recall. By investigating residents' perceived and expected value of the cultural heritage at several important stations along the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, this paper explores the realistic basis of value reconstruction and excavates the multiple values of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, which can contribute to the scientific protection and sustainable utilization of the linear cultural heritage of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway. The survey covers such issues as the economy, transportation, culture, society, ecology, tourism, spiritual attribution, local identity, and international contacts. By comparing the data collected using the Richter scale, the paper explores the differences between the twelve common factors of perceived value and expected value. It was found that the local identity of the residents along the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is mainly reflected in the functional turn, value reproduction, and tourism development; the perceived value and expected value of the residents along the railway are identical, and there are obvious differences, which are embodied in five aspects: frontier stability, economic development, international trade, ecological environment and national integration. The research concludes that: First, the residents along the railway consistently affirm the cultural heritage value of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway, expressing an optimistic and supportive attitude toward its future functional turn, value reproduction, and tourism development. Second, the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is a common element of the local memories of residents along the line, the source and symbol of their common cultural and local identities. The protection and utilization of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is a continuation of the local context that will greatly enhance the national spirit. Finally, the residents have different expectations for the future development of the railway. The overall utilization of the Yunnan-Vietnam Railway is not equal to sustaining the development of the whole railway. Attention should thus be focused on the sections with better resource conditions and foundations for tourism. The theme of the whole railway should be unified, and an international tourism route can be opened jointly with Vietnam at an appropriate time.

TOURISM research ,TOURISM ,TOURISTS ,TRAVELERS - Abstract
Taiwan is an aspirational leisure and tourism destination for many potential visitors from Mainland China. In recent years, the number of individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan has been constantly increasing. This not only has created significant economic benefits for Taiwan, but has also promoted greater cross - strait exchanges and increased understanding among the people on both sides. To date, there has been no published research about individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan and their leisure activities while staying in Taiwan. Through empirical analysis based on a questionnaire survey, this research explored differences in the basic characteristics and trip planning behaviors of individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan, and determined the relationships between place identity and leisure benefits. Individual visitors from Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen were sampled and five departure ports in Taiwan were the survey locations for intercepting these individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan. The total number of valid questionnaires obtained was 376 and the valid questionnaire ratio was 92. 8% . Item analysis was used to determine whether each item in the questionnaire could be retained. Exploratory factor analysis was applied to establish the construct validity of each questionnaire scale and reliability analysis tested the consistency among all questionnaire scales. One -- way ANOVAs and Scheffé post hoc tests were conducted to detect differences in travelers' basic characteristics and trip planning behaviors. Pearson product - moment correlation analysis tested the correlation between place identity and leisure benefits and canonical correlation analysis determined whether there was a canonical correlation between place identity and leisure benefits. The major research conclusions were as follows; (1) for the place identity scale, "environment identity" was rated the highest and "attachment identity" lowest by the individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan; (2) for leisure benefits, "social benefits" had the highest rating and "physiological benefits" were rated the lowest by individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan; (3) there were significant differences in the degree of place identity and leisure benefits according to the basic characteristics and trip planning behaviors of individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan; (4) place identity had a positive and significant correlation with leisure benefits; and (5) place identity had a canonical correlation relationship with leisure benefits. These findings should enrich the theories and research methods related to place identity and leisure benefits. Future researchers should build upon the results of this study by conducting more diverse investigations with varied themes and topics. Furthermore, the research conclusions suggest that tourism administrations and tourism businesses in Mainland China and Taiwan must improve regulations, environmental conditions and product portfolios to maximize the leisure benefits and raise place identity levels for individual visitors from Mainland China to Taiwan. Tourism is a complex phenomenon that encompasses society, the economy, and the environment. With the global expansion of the tourism industry following the Second World War, its impacts have received increasing attention. In particular, the sociocultural impacts of tourism have emerged as a core topic and priority area within tourism geography since the 1960s, when it became an established field of inquiry in English-speaking countries. In this paper, authors review and examine the literature on tourism's sociocultural impacts extracted from several major journals. Through an assessment of this literature, authors identified and selected approximately 100 relevant studies for the analysis. Margaret Deery has divided the process of conducting sociocultural impact research into several stages. Authors trace key developments in the research on tourism's sociocultural impacts since the 21
st Century, focusing the analysis on four aspects; residents' perceptions, cultural changes, place identity, and social structures. Authors' review and analysis show that research content in this field has developed rapidly in depth and breadth, both in China and abroad. However, this research has mainly been empirical and focused on communities and tourism, with less attention paid to aspects of law. In general, the literature reveals similar conclusions, with a lack of discussion of influential factors and mechanisms, and slow theoretical progress. Most of the studies are, therefore, of the "filling in" rather than the "forward-looking" variety, offering little scope for guiding practice. Conceptually, they rely on social exchange theory to predict and explain residents' perceptions and attitudes towards tourism, and on life cycle theory, which assumes that the attitudes and behavior of residents will change according to the different developmental stages of tourism. However, in the twenty-first century, the theoretical frames used in tourism studies have broadened considerably to include disciplines such as sociology, anthropology, economics, and ecology. For example, recent studies have adopted a wide range of theoretical constructs such as community attachment, emotional solidarity, creative destruction, social disruption, actor-networks, resilience assessments, landscape information chains, and cultural systems. These have variously been used to analyze the four sociocultural aspects of tourism's impact that have been described. However, although engaging with multidisciplinary theories is important in tourism research, the evolution of "home grown" theories specific to this field of inquiry is even more valuable, and marks a critical step in the maturing of the field. Regarding research methods, the analysis showed that questionnaire surveys and structural equation models were mainly used to identify and assess residents' perceptions, attitudes, and behavior relating to tourism. Qualitative methods were rarely used for this aspect of the research. Occasionally, mail communications and phone calls were used as methods of data collection. Conversely, qualitative research methods such as semi-structured interviews, in-depth interviews, and ethnography were used to explore the impact of tourism on cultural changes, place identity, and social structures. Additionally, focus groups, informal conversations and narratives, as well as some of the quantitative methods were sometimes used. Lastly, authors reflect in this paper on the prospects of this field of inquiry in view of the trend towards globalization of place. In conclusion, authors suggest that in this new era of local-global relations, sustainable development of the tourism industry and building harmonious linkages between tourists, residents, and immigration processes are required to promote effective management and best practices in tourism. Place memories (traditions), transmitted through art and the stories of a community, are key elements for the construction of individual and collective identity, connected to specific places. In this regard the authors examined how the representation of traditions affects place identity and in what ways the cultural heritage of the town might influence environmental forms of behaviour such as plans and projects. To this end the authors investigated the small town of Pagani in southern Italy, which has many ancient cultural traditions linked to specific locations and their rituals such as the festival of Our Lady of the Hens. Our contribution favours a qualitative approach in examining the data gathered and a participative methodology. The statistical analysis of the vocabulary distribution within 83 texts concerning town and its traditions, written by local citizens (52% male and 48% female) of different ages (range: 18-78) revealed a strong place identity. Narrative interviews (14) with key people were then analysed by means of grounded theory.
