Colonic diverticulitis is a common gastrointestinal disease which can be acute or chronic in course. In this paper we report the management of a patient with chronic colonic diverticulitis. The patient had an atypical clinical presentation, whose imaging showed a high likelihood of occupying lesions. PET/CT showed hypermetabolism focus and colonoscopy saw mucosal thickening, pathological return of inflammation in the acute phase, which were difficult in differential diagnosis with colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. After comprehensive consideration, follow-up observation was recommended and the diagnosis was finally clarified. The management of this patient demonstrates the importance of evidence-based medicine in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Preparation process and property of hydroxylation modified cotton fiber base absorbent were discussed. Cotton Fibers were used as the base material. Epoxidation and dialdehyde oxidation were performed for the cotton fibers with epoxy chloropropane and sodium periodate. Then, epoxy chloropropane was used as cross-linking agent to graft β-cyclodextrin and aldolization was adopted to graft hydroxy end hyperbranched polymer. Through the adsorption experiment on heavy metal ion, the optimized preparation process was obtained as 40 °C for oxidizing temperature, 0.6% for sodium periodate mass fraction and 3.5 h for dialdehyde oxidation. When 0.4 mol/L HCl was used as desorption reagent and 5% NaOH mass fraction was used as regenerant, the desorption and regeneration efficiency were better. It is considered that the absorption capability of the modified cotton fiber base absorbent on heavy metal ion is higher than cotton fiber. Through desorption of HCl and regeneration of NaOH regenerant, the absorption effect is still quite high. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To investigate the effect of 3M Cavilon liquid polymer dressing in preventing neonatal diaper dermatitis caused by phototherapy. Methods Totally 120 full-term neonates with phototherapy for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia were assigned to the observation group and the control group, with 90 cases in each group. The zinc oxide ointment was used for skin care in the control group, and the 3M Cavilon liquid polymer dressing was used in the observation. Results The incidence of neonatal diaper dermatitis was 3.33% (3/90) in the observation group, which was lower than 11.11% (10/90) in the control group (P <0.05). Conclusion The liquid polymer dressing is potentially effective to reduce the risk of neonatal diaper dermatitis caused by phototherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breast cancer has replaced lung cancer as the most common malignant tumor in the world. Precise surgical, internal medicine, targeted, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and other treatment methods will improve the survival and quality of life of patients. Accurate pathological diagnosis is the prerequisite and key to achieve clinical accurate treatment. This article makes a review of the relevant content of different submitted specimens and precise pathological diagnosis of breast cancer.

Objective: The explore the genetic basis for a patient with microcytic hypochromic anemia and iron deficiency anemia., Methods: Common deletions and variants of the globin genes were detected by Gap-PCR and next generation sequencing (NGS). Suspected mutations were verified by Sanger sequencing., Results: Gap-PCR and NGS showed that the proband has carried a αα/-α 3.7 deletion and a heterozygous c.2T>A (p.Met1Lys) mutation in the initiation codon of the HBA2 gene. The patient and her father both carried α HBA2 c.2T>A(p.Met1Lys) α/-α 3.7 , while her mother and other family members were -α 3.7 /-α 3.7 and αα/-α 3.7 , respectively., Conclusion: Patients with α HBA2 c.2T>A(p.Met1Lys) α/-α 3.7 genotype have typical features of thalassemia and abnormal hematologic indices compared with those with αα/-α 3.7 genotype, suggesting that the HBA2 c.2T>A (p.Met1Lys) is a pathogenic variant. Above finding has enriched the spectrum of α-thalassemia mutations and enabled genetic counseling and prenatal diagnosis for the family.

Objective: To assess the value of next generation sequencing (NGS) for the prevention and control of thalassemia., Methods: NGS was used to sequence 3083 clinical blood samples suspected for thalassemia during initial screening. Retrospective analysis was conducted on blood samples detected with rare genotypes of thalassemia and abnormal hemoglobin., Results: NGS analysis of the 3083 samples has found 1089 subjects with thalassemia genotypes (alpha-thelassemia genotype: 26.01%, beta-thalassemia genotype: 6.71%, and alpha-compound-beta genotype: 2.59%), which yielded a positive detection rate of 35.32%. Rare alpha-thalassemia genotypes including HBA2 c.123delG, HBA1 c.354&#95;355insATC and Fusion gene, and rare beta-thalassemia genotypes including HBB c.-100G>A and HBB c.316-90A>G, were discovered. In addition, 19 patients were found to have abnormal hemoglobin, mainly including Hb Hamilton, Hb Hekinan II, Hb Shizuoka, Hb Owari, Hb New York, Hb J-Bangkok and Hb Port Phillip., Conclusion: NGS can play a crucial role for improving of the prevention and control of thalassemia and formulating a screening system with better efficacy.

Objective To investigate the effects of paeoniflorin (PF) on liver injury of MRL/lpr mice and its underlying mechanisms. Methods The research included 10 normal control C57BL/6 mice and 40 MRL/lpr mice. MRL/lpr mice were randomly assigned equally to a blank control group, a dexamethasone (1.5 mg/kg) group, and two PF (20, 40 mg/kg) groups. The serum levels of alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST) were tested with microplate assay. Inflammatory cytokines in the serum and liver were also detected using ELISA. Liver pathological changes were observed using HE staining. The protein levels of receptor interacting protein140 (RIP140), Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), p-NF-κBp65, NF-κBp65, p-IκBα and IκBα in the liver were detected by Western blot analysis. Results PF significantly decreased the serum levels of AST and ALT, obviously decreased the expressions of the inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α in the serum and liver, alleviated liver pathological changes and inhibited the expressions of RIP140, TLR4, p-NF-κBp65, p-IκBα proteins in the MRL/lpr mice. Conclusion PF has protective effects against liver injury in MRL/lpr mice by inhibiting NF-κB pathway.

Objective: Schimke immuno-osseous dysplasia (SIOD), is an autosomal recessive inherited disease caused by SMARCAL1 (MIM:20606622) mutations, while in about half of the patients no any mutation in SMARCAL1 could be found. This disease involves multiple systems and is characterized by short and dissymmetric stature with spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, progressive renal failure, lymphopenia with recurrent infections, and hyperpigmented macules. This study aimed to analyze SMARCAL1 gene of 2 unrelated suspected SIOD children, to make definite diagnosis, and find more SMARCAL1 mutation types of Chinese SIOD., Method: Two suspected Chinese Han male SIOD children who visited our hospital from 2008 to 2014, aged 3 y 6 m and 7 y 8 m, both were short and had spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, progressive renal failure, lymphopenia with recurrent infections. After informed consent, they and their parents's DNA were extracted from blood. PCRs for all 16 exons of SMARCAL1 were performed and PCR products were purified by 2% gel electrophoresis and sequenced directly. Pathogenicity of missense variations was confirmed by SIFT and sequencing SMARCAL1 of fifty normal controls., Result: (1) Four gene variations were found in the two children: Two reported missense mutations c.1129G>C, p.Glu377Gln and c.1933C>T, p. Arg645Cys. Two splicing mutations c.1334+1G>A and c.2142-1 G>A were detected. (2) c.1129G>C, p.Glu377Gln were reported as a disease-causing mutations before, but it was an single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) which was found in 15 of 50 normal controls. (3) Two novel splicing mutations were found in this study: c.1334+1G>A and c.2142-1 G>A., Conclusion: (1) We detected 3 disease-causing mutations in 2 SIOD children by SMARCAL1 gene analysis, while 2 splicing mutations were novel mutations. (2) c.1129G>C, p.Glu377Gln was a SNP but not a disease-causing mutation at least in Chinese population.

Objective: To construct the recombinant baculovirus with mammaliancell-specific promoter and woodchuck hepatitis virus post-transcriptional regulatory element (WPRE), to highly express Newcastle disease virus (NDV) F gene in the primary chicken embryo cells., Method: We extracted total RNAs from NDV La Sota strain. Then the F gene was amplified by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. We constructed the baculoviral vector (pCMV-WPRE-F) with F gene fused with the WPRE near its 3'end, which expressed under the control of the CMV promoter. The F gene recombinant bacmid was obtained by Bac-to-Bac system and transfected into sf9 insect cells to acquire F gene recombinant baculovirus. After amplification of recombinant baculovirus, the recombinant virus was transfected into chicken primary cells with 50 multiplicity of infection, and the proteins were harvested at 72 h after infection. The F protein expression levels mediated by WPRE regulatory element were analyzed., Results: Western blot results show that the F gene was successfully expressed in chicken primary cells. The product was a 56kDa protein and could be recognized by anti-NDV serum. The WPRE fusion significantly improved the F gene expression as 10 mmol/L butyrate did, but different to butyrate, the WPRE regulatory element was nontoxic to cells., Conclusion: The optimized recombinant baculovirus could efficiently deliver NDV F gene into chicken primary cells and express the F antigen protein. In addition, the WPRE regulatory element could increase the expression levels of exogenous gene mediated by baculovirus in chicken primary cells. The research provides us a potential basis for the gene engineered vaccines of NDV and other avian infectious disease based on baculovirus vector.

A pollen defective male sterile rice mutant, osms55, was isolated from an elite indica cultivar HHZ using EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate) mutagenesis strategy. Genetic analysis showed that osms55 was controlled by a single recessive gene. Genome-wide SNP analysis using the high-throughput Illumina Infinium iSelect SNP (50 K) microarray technology indicated that the genetic makeup of osms55 is the same as wild type (WT) HHZ. Using a modified MutMap method, we successfully identified a mutation in the LOC&#95;Os02g40450 (MER3) gene that is co-segregated with the male sterility phenotype. The mutation is located at the intron splice-recognition site, leading to a 15 nucleotide deletion in the fifth exon. Different from the published MutMap method that aligns the mutant pool DNA sequence with the assembled WT genome, the method used in this study was to align the re-sequencing data of the mutant pool DNA and WT HHZ with the Nipponbare reference genome. The resulting SNPs of mutant/Nipponbare and WT HHZ/Nipponbare were further compared to determine the candidate mutant gene. This modified method does not need an assembled WT genome as reference and thus is more cost-effective and widely applicable.

Objective: To investigate whether the recombinant baculovirus BV-T7 hybrid expression system can be effectively transduced into chicken cells in vitro, and whether it can express the foreign genes (eGFP)., Method: We established a hybrid baculovirus-T7 RNA polymerase system for transient expression in mammalian cells and chicken cells. Two recombinant baculoviruses were constructed, one carrying cDNA of bacteriophage T7 RNA polymerase, with a nuclear localization signal, under the control of a mammalian promoter and the other expressing eGFP gene under the control of T7 promoter. The constructed recombinant baculoviruses co-infected mammalian oligodendrocyte cells, as well as chicken embryo fibroblasts cells and chicken embryo skeletal muscle cells., Results: The eGFP activity was detected in mammalian cell lines and embryo fibroblasts cells and chicken embryo skeletal muscle cells. The recombinant baculovirus transduction efficiency of oligodendrocyte cells was 59.5%, and in CEF cells and myoblast cells the transduction efficiencies were 23.2% and 33.1%., Conclusion: BV-T7 hybrid expression could be expressed T7 RNAP in mammalian cells and avian cells.

On the spot, the removal effect of pollutants such as NH3-N, N, NO3(-)-N, NO2-(-)N, TN and COD in the mimic sewage by bio-zeolite system was studied. The following results were obtained: it was obvious and stable for the removal of NH3-N by bio-zeolite with a removal efficiency over 95%, but the removal effect of NO3(-)-N was affected deeply by hydraulic retention time, according to the different removal mechanism; chemical adsorption and ion exchange were the main reasons for the removal of NH3-N as well as nitrification by microbe, while denitrification was the main reason for the removal of NO3(-)-N. Nitrification intensity of bio-zeolite was affected by the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the solution, so the nitrification intensity of bio-zeolite on the surface of the zeolite bed was two times of that in the middle in vertical direction. Denitrification intensity changed with different values of C/N in the study, and it could reach the maximum while COD/TN was 5; as for denitrification velocity, it was largest in the first six hour.

The positive matrix factorization(PMF) method was used to apportion the sources for fine particles in Beijing. The data were obtained from four samplings from 1999 to 2000. The number of this data set was 40. The chemical compositions used in analysis include element carbon(EC), organics, SO4(2-), F-, Cl-, Fe, Ca, K, Mg, Al, Na, Zn, Mn, Ti, Pb, Ba and P. Six main sources, soil dust, construction dust, secondary source (by photochemical action), biomass burning, motor vehicle and coal burning were found.

The measurement of atmospheric hydroxyl radicals (OH) in Beijing was carried out using two methods based on high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The diurnal variation of OH concentration was obtained. The maximum concentration during sunny daytime was about 8 x 10(7) cm-3 in summer, while it decreased to about 2 x 10(7)-4 x 10(7) cm-3 in autumn. The relationships between OH and other pollutants were studied and discussed. Positive linear correlation between OH and UV-B intensity, O3, HNO2 was observed, while negative correlation between OH and NOx was found.

The continued high temperature weather (CHTW) appeared in Beijing since June 23 1999. The measurements showed the PM2.5 mass concentrations were 2 to 3 times of that in non-CHTW period. However the diffusion conditions were still fine in these days. Both the highest hourly concentrations of O3 and the SO4(2-) composition in PM2.5 can identify that the photochemical action was very active. It is the very reason to produce more fine particles in atmosphere.

The measurement was made in 3 periods from May to September of 2000 in Beijing. The measurement species included SO4(2-), NO3-, NO2-, Cl- of aerosol and related gases. The hourly variation of the concentration was presented. It showed that NO3-, NO2-, Cl- of aerosol and HCl, HNO2, HNO3 of gas varied with regularity. The variation of gas SO2 and aerosol SO4(2-) depended on the emission of SO2. The peak time of SO4(2-) was about 2 hours later than SO2.
