Guanidine acetic acid is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative that acts as a direct precursor of creatine, an important compound in muscle and nerve tissue energy metabolism. Guanidine acetic acid, as a new nutritional additive, has no obvious side effects on animals, which plays an important role in improving animal growth performance and carcass quality. The paper reviews the basic metabolic pathway of guanidine acetic acid biotransformation and its application in animal production, to provide reference for the application of guanidine acetic acid in livestock and poultry breeding industry. A method for the determination of dipotassium glycyrrhizinate in various personal care products (shampoo, shower gel, hair conditioner and facial cleanser) with high performance liquid chromatography was established. ZORBAX SB-C18 column (4.6 mm*25O mm, 5 µm) was used. The 0.01 mol/L phosphoric acid solution-acetonitrile (63 : 37) was used as mobile phase in the isocratic elution. The sample was treated by ultrasonic extraction with methanol and detected by diode array detector. The experimental results showed that, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate showed a good linear relationship in the concentration range of 1~200 µg/mL (R² = O.999 7). The average recovery rates of dipotassium glycyrrhizinate in the shampoo, shower gel, hair conditioner and facial cleanser were 92.92%~1O1.69%. The method had good precision and accuracy and could be used for the rapid qualitative and quantitative analysis of dipotassium glycyrrhizinate in personal care products. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In order to explore the effects of maize plant types on dry matter accumulation and yield of soybean, a field experiment was conducted in 2013, including three maize-soybean relay strip intercropping systems. The relay strip intercropping systems were designed as soybean (Gongxuan 1) intercropped with Denghai 605 (RI1), Chuandan 418 (RI2) or Yayu 13 (RI3), and the monocultured soybean was used as control. The results demonstrated that the dry matter accumulation rates of intercropped soybean in RI2 and RI3 treatments were lower than in RI1 treatment, and the leaf, stem and pod dry matter accumulation of intercropped soybean in RI1 treatment was 17.6%, 16.5% and 13.7% higher than that in RI2 treatment, and 34.6%, 33.1% and 28.4% higher than that in RI3 treatment, respectively. The distribution proportion of leaf and stem of intercropped soybean was in the order of RI1 > RI2 > RI3. However, the trend of the distribution proportion of pod was opposite. Compared with RI2 and RI3, the dry matter translocation amount, translocation proportion, contribution proportion of soybean vegetative organs to pod of soybean were improved in RI1 treatment, and the pod per plant, seeds per plant, seeds per pod, yield per plant and yield of soybean in RI1 were higher than RI2 and RI3 by 6.8%, 11.5%, 4.4%, 15.9%, 15.6% and 14.3%, 22.2%, 6.7%, 33.4%, 36.8%, respectively. The results showed that the yield was positively related with the accumulation rate of dry matter, dry matter translocation, dry matter translocation ratio and the contribution of dry matter accumulation, and these indices were highest in RI1 treatment. The results indicated that the compact maize relay intercropped with soybean could effectively regulate the dry matter accumulation, translocation and distribution, and improve the yield of soybean. Preeclampsia (PE) is one of the main causes for the death of pregnant women. The developmental disorders of placental trophoblastic cells are related to the pathogenesis of PE. The malfunction of placenta may result in a high oxidative stress at the feto-maternal interface, which stimulates the excessive production of various factors from placenta. Those soluble placental factors are released into maternal circulation, eventually leading to the maternal symptoms of PE. Those hormones and molecules secreted by placenta, such as VEGF and anti -VEGF, methoxyestradiol, atrial natriuretic peptide, activin A and inhibin A, could partly reflect the developmental disorders of placenta. miRNAs and genetics were also found to be related to the pathogenesis of PE. Objective To evaluate the impact of deep learning reconstruction algorithm on the image quality of head and neck CT angiography (CTA) at 100 kVp. Methods CT scanning was performed at 100 kVp for the 37 patients who underwent head and neck CTA in PUMC Hospital from March to April in 2021.Four sets of images were reconstructed by three-dimensional adaptive iterative dose reduction (AIDR 3D) and advanced intelligent Clear-IQ engine (AiCE) (low,medium,and high intensity algorithms),respectively.The average CT value,standard deviation (SD),signal-to-noise ratio (SNR),and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of the region of interest in the transverse section image were calculated.Furthermore,the four sets of sagittal maximum intensity projection images of the anterior cerebral artery were scored (1 point:poor,5 points:excellent). Results The SNR and CNR showed differences in the images reconstructed by AiCE (low,medium,and high intensity) and AIDR 3D (all P <0.01).The quality scores of the image reconstructed by AiCE (low,medium,and high intensity) and AIDR 3D were 4.78±0.41,4.92±0.27,4.97±0.16,and 3.92±0.27,respectively,which showed statistically significant differences (all P <0.001). Conclusion AiCE outperformed AIDR 3D in reconstructing the images of head and neck CTA at 100 kVp,being capable of improving image quality and applicable in clinical examinations.

Objective: To investigate the regulatory effect and mechanism of vitamin D on the local renin-angiotensin system at maternal-fetal interface in the pathological process of preeclampsia (PE)., Methods: The mRNA and protein expression of renin in decidua of normal pregnancy and PE placentas was determined by RT-PCR and Western blot. Normal decidual tissues were treated with active and inactive vitamin D for 48 h in vitro and the expressions of renin and vitamin D deactivating enzyme CYP24A1 were determined by RT-PCR and Western blot. Normal decidual stromal cells and glandular epithelial cells were isolated and purified, and identified by immunocytochemical staining. RT-PCR was used to examine the mRNA of vdr , cyp 27 b 1, cyp 24 a 1, and renin in the two types of cells and in decidual tissue, and the mRNA products were subjected to gel electrophoresis. These two cell types were treated with active and inactive vitamin D in vitro and the expressions of renin and vitamin D deactivating enzyme CYP24A1 were determined by RT-PCR and Western blot. Decidual gland epithelial cells were treated with protein kinase A (PKA) activator forskolin or inhibitor H89 to explore the interaction between PKA pathway and vitamin D in the regulation of renin expression., Results: The expression of renin in PE decidua was significantly higher than that of normal control at transcriptional and translational levels ( P <0.05). Vitamin D treatment could significantly down-regulate the expression of renin in normal decidua tissues ( P <0.05), while it significantly up-regulated CYP24A1 expression ( P <0.001). Decidual stromal cells and gland epithelial cells were successfully isolated from decidual tissue. Compared with that in decidual stromal cells, the mRNA level of vitamin D-related molecules in gland epithelial cells was more similar to that in decidual tissue. Active or inactive vitamin D treatment significantly inhibited the expression of renin in glandular epithelial cells ( P <0.05), but the expression of renin in decidual stromal cells was not affected. However, the treatment of active or inactive vitamin D in these two kinds of cells significantly increased the expression of CYP24A1 ( P <0.001). Active vitamin D could significantly inhibit the upregulation of renin by PKA agonist forskolin, and could inhibit the expression of renin through synergy with PKA inhibitor H89., Conclusion: The expression of renin in placental decidua is up-regulated in patients with PE, and the activation of local renin-angiotensin system at the maternal-fetal interface may be involved in the pathogenesis of PE. Vitamin D can specifically down-regulate renin expression in human decidual gland epithelial cells by competing with the PKA pathway. Focusing on the original text record in Huangdi Neijing ( Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor ), the relevant theories of "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" are explored, e.g. acupoint names, meridians and acupoint features, and the clinical application of these acupoints has been analyzed. It is discovered that "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" are mainly used in treatment of the disorders in the nervous system, five sensory organs and motor system. Besides, in terms of the relevant theories, "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" has been compared with "root and knot" and "twelve divergent meridians". It is found that "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" communicates the externally-internally related meridians and is applicable in treatment of the disorders with both exterior and interior involved. It is the essential acupoint composition of the human body.

Placenta serves as a temporary fetal organ, which mediates maternal-fetal crosstalk and intrauterine fetal growth. Placental defensive barrier is a fundamental physiological function, which balances maternal immune tolerance to the fetus and resistance to pathogens. This review summarizes the latest research progress on the mechanisms of placental barrier formation from the view of placental development. Recent discoveries have shed light on the cellular and molecular properties of placental defensive mechanisms in syncytiotrophoblast, including autophagy, exosome mediated anti-pathogenic pathways, cell-cell junctions and cytoskeleton networks. We also present an overview of placental barrier dysfunction and its implications in intrauterine TORCH infections.

Objective: To investigate the surgical techniques and mid-term efficacy of reconstruction for proximal femur with allograft-prosthetic composite (APC) ., Methods: Fifteen patients who underwent uncemented APC reconstruction of proximal femur after bone tumor resection were retrospectively evaluated. Image and physical examinations were taken on the 1st,3rd,6th,9th and 12th month after surgery and every 6 months thereafter to assess union condition,greater trochanteric bone absorption and myodynamia of abductors. Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) and Harris Hip Score (HHS) were utilized to evaluate the function of hip joint., Results: Seven male and eight female patients were included with average age of 25.1 years(17-56 years) and average followup of 32.8 months(18-48 months). Four patients had giant cell tumor of the bone,3 patients had osteosarcoma,3 patients had chondrosarcoma,2 patients had malignant fibrous histiotoma,2 patients had osteoblastoma and 1 patient had Ewing sarcoma. Unions occurred in the allograft-host bone interfaces of all patients in the period of 5-9 months postoperatively. Bone absorption in the allograft-host bone interfaces,dislocation,hypersensitivity of the allograft and acetabulum abrasion were not observed,while there were no metastasis and tumor recurrence. Three patients had periprosthetic fractures intraoperatively and were well fixed with cerclage. Absorptions in the greater trochanteric happened to 6 patients. All patients had mean MSTS and HHS scores of 11.3 (7-15) and 47.3 (40.3-58.5) preoperatively and 26.1(24-29) and 80.1(66.2-92.7) postoperatively., Conclusion: Uncemented APC reconstruction is proper for young patients with long life expectancy and high demand of function that suffered from tumors of proximal femur., (CopyrightCopyright© by Editorial Board of Journal of Sichuan University (Medical Science Edition).)

Objective: To design minimal invasive screw on posterior pelvic ring and perform threedimensional finite element analysis based on a pelvis finite element model., Methods: We measured the pelvic anatomical data of 20 healthy volunteers and identified potential designs for minimal invasive screw on posterior pelvic ring. A finite element model of pelvis was then established. Threedimensional finite element analyses were performed under static and dynamic mechanical loading,respectively., Results: Three screw tracks on ilium (A,B and C) were identified based on a threedimensional reconstruction of pelvis. Nail track B and C had greater length and width,but shorter distance between nailing and soft tissue compared with nail track A. Static loading under an external rotation load of 500 N generated a maximum Mises Von stress of 582.05 Pa and sacral iliac complex of 107.38 Pa. The greatest strain was located at the articular cartilage on the side of the nail,followed by lateral sacral joint cartilage and symphysis pubis. The largest displacement was located at the ilium on the side of the nail,with a gradient decrease to the opposite side. The largest displacement of the anterior superior iliac spine was 0.35 cm on the side of the nail. The dynamic loading identified displacement of the anterior superior iliac spine with 1.5 mm in Z axis,1.8 mm in X axis and -0.2 mm in Y axis; and displacement of the pubic bone with 0.8 mm in Z axis,1.0 mm in X axis and 0.03 mm in Y axis. The maximum displacement appeared along the impact direction: Y axis. Relatively large equivalent stress was found in pubis and ischium,anterior superior iliac spine,sacrum,acetabular that are prone to fracture. With increased impact force,the stress of pelvis increased over time. The maximum impact force,stress and displacement of the pelvis occurred at 10 ms when peak force was reached. Under the impact of 4 000 N and 5 000 N,the bone was subject to a stress level of over 200 MPa,exceeding its average yield strength,which suggests a possibility of pelvic fracture., Conclusion: Taking B/C as a main screw track and A as an auxiliary screw track is a reasonable choice. The pelvic finite element model lays a foundation for further studies into sacral fracture and design of screw tracks.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of adenoviruses (AdV) and their genotypes in infants and young children with diarrhea., Methods: A total of 380 children with diarrhea aged less than 3 years were enrolled. The genomic DNA was extracted from stool and PCR was used to detect AdV. Clone sequencing and genotyping were performed for DNA in AdV-positive specimens., Results: AdV was detected in 24 out of 380 specimens, and the detection rate was 6.3% (24/380). A majority of children with positive AdV were aged 2-3 years. The viral sequence analysis of positive specimens showed that the detection rates of enteric AdV41 and non-enteric AdV were 4.2% (16/380) and 2.1% (8/380), respectively, and among the children with non-enteric AdV, there were 2 with AdV1, 2 with AdV2, 1 with AdV7, 2 with AdV12, and 1 with AdV31., Conclusions: Diarrhea caused by AdV is commonly seen in children aged 2-3 years, and AdV41 is the major predominant strain.

Synovial chondromatosis of the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) is an extremely rare condition. A case of synovial chondromatosis with postoperative recurrence and involvement of base of skull was reported. The clinic pathological features, diagnosis and treatment were discussed with literature review.

In order to solve the problem of selection and in vivo delivery problem in siRNA treatment, hepatitis B virus (HBV) HBx gene which could be targeted by siRNA was studied. The siRNA expression plasmid which specific inhibits HBx expression was obtained by in vitro selection via a dual-luciferase plasmid including HBx-Fluc fusion protein expression domain. The selected siRNA expression plasmid was then encapsulated in PEG-modified cationic liposome, which was devoted into pharmacodynamic studies at both cellular and animal level. The results illustrated that the cationic liposome which encapsulated siRNA expression plasmid could effectively inhibit HBx gene expression both in vitro and in vivo.

Objective: To observe the differences in the clinical therapeutic effects on lumbar disc herniation among warm needling therapy, electroacupuncture therapy and common acupuncture therapy., Methods: One hundred and thirty-six cases of lumbar disc herniation were randomized into a warm needling group (46 cases), an electroacupuncture group (45 cases) and a common acupuncture group (45 cases). The points were the same in the three groups. The main points were Shiqizhui (EX-B 8), Yaoyangguan (GV 3), Huantiao (GB 30), Yanglingquan (GB 34), Jiaji (EX-B 2) (corresponding tender points). In the warm manipulation group, the warm and dredging manipulation was adopted. In the electroacupuncture group, G6805- II electric acupuncture apparatus was attached. In the common acupuncture group, only common needling therapy was applied without any specific manipulation supplemented. In all of the three groups, the treatment was given once every two days, 10 treatments made one session. After one session of treatment, the comprehensive assessment score of the chief symptoms and physical signs, VAS score and the clinical efficacy were compared among the three groups., Results: The score of the chief symptoms and physical signs and VAS score after treatment were all reduced as compared with those before treatment in all of the three groups, indicating the statistically significant differences (P < 0.05). All of the three therapies could relieve the chief symptoms and physical signs of lumbar disc herniation. After treatment, the total effective rate was 89.1% (41/46) in the warm manipulation group, 88.9% (40/50) in the electroacupuncture group and 71.1% (32/45) in the common acupuncture group. The efficacies were not different apparently between the warm manipulation group and the electroacupuncture group (P > 0.05). The efficacies in the warm manipulation group and the electroacupuncture group were all superior to the common acupuncture group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The efficacies of the warm and dredging manipulation and the electroacupuncture therapy are superior to the common acupuncture therapy in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation.

Objective: To assess the improvement of intelligence quotient through an Universal Salt Iodization Supply Program, among children., Methods: 3518 and 1611 children were selected from primary schools in Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture of Gansu in 2006 and 2010 respectively. Intelligence quotient (IQ) were measured by the revised Chinese Combined Raven Test-C2 (CRT-C2)., Results: In 2006, the average IQ of children aged 8-10 was 85.1, including 16.7% of them with IQ ≤ 69. The average IQ was between 80-90 in different counties and cities, with significant differences (P < 0.05). The average IQs were 92.0, 90.6 and 81.8 among 8, 9 and 10 years old children respectively with 10 year old's low than those 8 and 9 year olds (P < 0.05). The average IQs of boys and girls were 84.5 and 85.6, but with no significant difference (P > 0.05). The average IQ of children aged 8-10 in 2010 was 97.2 and 12 points higher than in 2006 (P < 0.05), but 8 IQ points (P < 0.05) less than the average level 105 from the overall of Gansu province. 4.7% of the children having an IQ ≤ 69. IQ of children from Linxia city and Yongjing county, were up to the theoretical level of 100, with an average IQ at around 95 in other counties. The average IQs between counties or cities showed significant differences. The IQ of 8, 9 year olds and 10 year olds did not present significant difference (P > 0.05), but in boys (98.8) and in girls (95.9) the difference was significant (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The average IQ was close to the theoretical level (100) with the gradual implementation of universal salt iodization program, showing that the iodized salt did play a key role on children's intelligence. However, the average IQ was still lower than the average level of the whole Gansu province in 2010.

To investigate the expression pattern of lipogenic genes in mammary gland of mouse in different lactation stages, the relative mRNA abundance and expression of 20 genes involved in milk fat synthesis and secretion of lactating mammary tissues were assessed using real-time PCR. Results revealed the significant upregulation of mRNA expression for both high abundant genes (abundance > 5%), such as LPL, ACACA, SCD, XDH, BTN, and ADFP and moderate abundant genes (5% > abundance > 1%), such as CD36, FASN, AGPAT6, and DGAT in lactation stages compared to pregnancy (P < 0.05). The mRNA expression of lipogenic enzyme genes for ACACA, SCD, FASN, AGPAT6, and DGAT exhibited lower expression lever in early (6 d) and late (18 d) lactation stages but higher expression level at middle stage (12 d), demonstrating a low-high-low pattern. Besides, the mRNA levels of some gene regulators were also measured. The mRNA expression of SREBF gene increased gradually along with the lactation, which showed a 10-fold elevation at middle stage (12 d). The expression pattern of SREBF gene was the same as lipogenic enzyme genes, suggesting that SREBF may play an important role in the regulation of lipogenic enzyme genes in the lactating mammary gland.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between iodine nutrition and growth/development in infants at the key period of brain development., Methods: All women from pregnancy to the end of lactation and the weaning infants within 3 years in the Linxia Hui Autonomous Prefecture (Linxia Prefecture) were added iodized oil in 2006 - 2010. In 2006, 2010 one town was randomly selected from each of the five directions (east, south, west, north, central) of each county in Linxia Prefecture. One village was chosen from every town and 20 infants, 20 pregnant women and 20 lactating women were randomly selected in each town. Urinary iodine (UI) of the infants, pregnant and lactating women were determined. DQ value, height and weight of part of infants were measured. According to the above sampling plan, UI of pregnant women, lactating women and infants had been monitored every year after intervention. 0-3 infants were choosing to be control before intervention., Results: UI of 1056 and 2989 0-3 infants were investigated before and after the iodine oil intervention. After the 'iodine oil' intervention, the median UI of infants increased from 107.3 µg/L to 139.6 - 190.7 µg/L, the percentage of UI level that lower than 50 µg/L, decreased from 23.9% to 6.7% - 12.9%. DQ value increased from 92.8 to 104.3, the percentage of normal height and above increased from 65.0% to 82.1% and the percentage of the normal weight and above, increased from 59.3% to 81.4%. The outcomes of DQ value, height and weight showed statistically significant differences, compared to the pre-intervention outcomes (P < 0.05). The median UI of pregnant and lactating women increased from 89.3 µg/L to 118.2 - 187.8 µg/L and from 84.9 µg/L to 135.2 - 187.5 µg/L respectively., Conclusion: Infant's growth and development were retarded when iodine deficiency existed at the key period of brain development. Intake of oral iodine oil at key period of brain development could provide adequate nutrition thus improve growth and development on infants.

The experiment realized third harmonic enhancement by using non-collinear dual plasma channels based on pump-probe effect. The coupling action between pump and probe beams can improve saturation effect within filament and overcome the limitation of harmonic enhancement due to intensity clamping. By non-collinearly focusing two ultrafast pulses in air which have respectively a single pulse energy of 4.4 and 10.2 mJ, both with duration of 60 fs and central wavelength of 810 nm, dual filaments as well as weak third harmonics can be generated. When strong beam is ahead of weak one, the former induces a plasma channel in advance which can modulate later weak beam and make obvious harmonic increase produced by probe beam. It was found that oscillation variation of spectral bandwidth in the region of harmonic energy increased significantly. When two beams intersect in a small angle of 27.3 mrad about 15 mm before geometric focus and the probe beam lags behind about 55 fs, the energy increase rate nearly reaches 70, and the corresponding spectral bandwidth is approximately 5 nm.

Objective: To investigate the effect of vitamin E on renal ischemia/reperfusion injury (RI/RI) in young and aged rats., Methods: The model of (RI/RI) was induced by bilateral clamping the renal artery and vein for 45 min followed by reperfusion. The contents of BUN, Scr, MDA, SOD, NO and iNOS were measured. Proteins of HSP70 were observed by immunohistochemistry. Flow cytometer was used to estimate the apoptosis rate of renal cortex cells., Results: After ischemia/reperfusion injury, the contents of BUN, Scr and iNOS were increased. Compared with young ischemia/reperfusion group, the contents of MDA were higher and the contents of SOD were lower in aged ischemia/reperfusion group. The expression of HSP70, the contents of NO and the apoptosis rate of renal cortex cells were higher in aged ischemia/reperfusion group than that in control group. Vitamin E significantly decreased the contents of BUN, Scr, MDA and iNOS, and increased the contents of NO and SOD after RI/RI. The expression of HSP70 was increased in both VE groups than that in both I/R groups. The apoptosis rate of renal cortex cells was less in both VE groups than that in both I/R groups., Conclusion: Vitamins E may up-regulate the expression of HSP70, increase the contents of SOD and NO, and enhance an ability of clear free radicals, which may contributes to decreasing renal ischemia/reperfusion injury in young and aged rats.

Objective: To explore the enhancing effect of compound Kusheg injection in chemotherapy for patients with stage III and IV non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)., Methods: A total of 286 patients with advanced NSCLC were enrolled in this study. The patients were treated with either compound Kusheng injection in combination with NP (NVB + CBP) chemotherapy (vinorelbine and carboplatin, n = 144), or with NP (NVB + CBP) chemotherapy alone (n = 142). The chemotherapy was performed for 4 cycles of 3 weeks, and the therapeutic efficacy was evaluated every 2 weeks. The following indicators were observed: levels of Hb, WBC, PLT and T cell subpopulations in blood, serum IgG level, short-term efficacy, adverse effects and quality of life., Results: The gastrointestinal reactions and the myelosuppression in the combination chemotherapy group were alleviated as compared with the chemotherapy alone group, showing a significant difference (P < 0.05). CD(8)(+) cells were markedly declined in the combination chemotherapy group, and the CD(4)(+)/CD(8)(+) ratio showed an elevation trend in the chemotherapy alone group. The KPS scores and serum IgM and IgG levels were higher in the combination chemotherapy group than those in the chemotherapy alone group (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05). The serum lgA levels were not significantly different in the two groups., Conclusion: The compound Kusheng injection plus NP chemotherapy regimen shows better therapeutic effect, reduces adverse effects of chemotherapy and improves the quality of life in patients with stage III and IV NSCLC.

Objective: To study clinical characteristics of ocular ischemic syndrome (OIS)., Methods: Retrospective study. Data, including sex, age, systemic diseases, best corrected visual acuity, anterior segment, fundus, fundus fluorescence angiography (FFA), transcranial Doppler (TCD) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA), were collected from 10 patients (12 eyes) with ocular ischemic syndrome from February 2008 to April 2009., Results: The mean age was 59 years. There were six males and four females. All patients were combined with heart and/or cerebrovascular diseases. Best corrected visual acuity ranged from hand movement to 1.0. Neovascularization of the iris appeared in 5 eyes. Intraocular pressure over 21 mm Hg (1 mm Hg = 0.133 kPa) was present in 3 eyes. Fundus examination showed narrow retinal arteries, dilated but not tortuous veins, fleck-shaped hemorrhage of the retina, cotton-wool exudates, optic disc edema, optic disc neovascularization, and atypical macular cherry-red spots. TCD showed stenosis of internal carotid artery at different degrees. FFA was performed in 9 patients which showed artery front, prolonged arm-retinal circulation time, retinal circulation time and choroid circulation time. All patients accepted vasodilation and microcirculation improving treatments. Visual acuity was improved at different degrees. One patient (2 eyes) with iris neovascularization was treated with retinal photocoagulation and the neovascularization disappeared after the treatment. There were 3 patients (3 eyes) had neovascular glaucoma. One patient was treated by ciliary cryotherapy. One patient was treated by retinal photocoagulation and internal carotid artery stent implantation and one were treated by internal carotid artery stent implantation. Four patients were examined by DSA. Internal carotid artery stent implantation was performed in 3 patients, subclavian artery stent implantation was performed in one patient and internal carotid artery intima decollement was performed in one patient., Conclusions: Clinical manifestations of ocular ischemic syndrome patients are complicated which are depended on the different extents of ischemia. The management of ocular ischemic syndrome requires the collaboration of ophthalmologists, neurophysicians and neurosurgeons.

Objective: To investigate the follow-up results of the prophylactic laser treatment to macular soft drusen in age-related macular degeneration., Methods: Prospective, 10 persons with bilateral soft drusen and with good visual acuity were observed for 8 years. 10 eyes were treated. The fellow eyes were as control group. Fluorescein angiography and Amsler test were studied after 8 years. Scanning laser ophthalmoscope was performed after 2 years. Some of them were performed multifocal ERG to test the macular function after 3 years., Results: There is no choroidal neovascularization in both the laser group and the control group. There is no differences in the best corrected visual acuity after 8 years. All eyes had good fovea fixation. Light sensitivity of both eyes had no significant difference to be found by scanning laser ophthalmoscope. The latencies and amplitude densities of the N1 and P1 waves in the central first ring remained unchanged at 3 years post-treatment (before treatment t = -0.779, 0.722, -0.491, 0.286; after treatment t = 1.342, 0.043, 0.937, 0.350; P > 0.05) compared with the fellow eyes., Conclusions: There is no impairment to be found in the macula after preventive laser treatment. The treatment did not demonstrate a clinically significant benefit for choroidal neovascularization in eyes of people with bilateral large drusen.

Objective: To investigate the long-term loss and variation of corneal endothelial cells after radial keratotomy., Methods: By the way of case-control study, 51 myopia (101 eyes) patients who underwent RK in Beijing Friendship hospital, from January 1989 to December 1996 is the RK group. 51 myopia (102 eyes) outpatients who have no other eye diseases is the control group. The volunteers are the outpatients of Department of Ophthalmology in Beijing Friendship Hospital from November 2006 to March 2007. Corneal endothelial cells are examined by Topcon SP2000 non-contact corneal endothelial microscope. To survey corneal endothelium of center, superior, inferior, temple side and nasal side, to study endothelial cell density, average areas, coefficient of cell variation in size and hexagonality., Results: The differences of endothelial cell density, average areas, hexagonality are no significant between the RK group and the control group with the same age stage (P > 0.05). The differences of coefficient of cell variation are significant. In the 30 year old stage, the result of center is t = 3.742, P = 0.000, the result of superior is t = 3.627, P = 0.000, the result of inferior is t = 3.180, P = 0.002, the result of nasal side is t = 2.448, P = 0.016, the result of temple side is t = 3.149, P = 0.002. In the 40 year old stage, the result of center is t = 4.446, P = 0.000, the result of superior is t = 2.444, P = 0.017, the result of inferior is t = 2.113, P = 0.038, the result of nasal side is t = 3.214, P = 0.002, the result of temple side is t = 2.680, P = 0.009. In the 50 year old stage, the result of center is t = 2.360, P = 0.024, the result of superior is t = 2.600, P = 0.013, the result of inferior is t = 2.787, P = 0.008, the result of nasal side is t = 2.144, P = 0.038, the result of temple side is t = 2.177, P = 0.036. But the differences of coefficient of cell variation have no relationship with the time of RK (P > 0.05). The differences of endothelial cell density, average areas, coefficient of cell variation in size and hexagonality are no significant among different incision group (P > 0.05). There are impalpable changes in the morphology of endothelial cells, coefficient of cell variation in size is greater than the control with the same age stage., Conclusion: If proforming other eye operations to RK patients, it is necessary to evaluate the corneal endothelial cells before operations.

Objective: To assess the iodine status of pregnant women, lactating women and babies and to understand if iodized salt as the main iodine source had met the need of people's demand in regions where iodized salt coverage rate had been over 90%, for the last five years., Methods: Pregnant and lactating women, newborns and babies were selected randomly in region where iodized salt coverage rate had been more than 90%, for the five years. Urine iodine levels of pregnant and lactating women, newborns and babies, milk iodine of lactating women and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) of newborns were measured., Results: The median urinary iodine (MUI) of people other than those recently pregnant women, had reached the MUI criterion recommended by WHO with the results as 174.18, 180.37, 147.42, 126.27, 145.26 microg/L, respectively. The percentage of TSH>5 pIU/ml of newborns was 14.5%. The median milk iodine of lactating women were in the range of 100-200 microg/L. The percentage of milk iodine < 150 microg/L of early lactating women was less than that of late lactating women (P < 0.01). There was a good correlation between urine iodine of babies and milk iodine of lactating women. The abnormal TSH of women was 15.4%. The abnormal TSH mainly existed in women whose urinary iodine level were lower than 150 microg/L., Conclusion: Iodized salt as the main iodine source could basically meet the need of pregnant women, lactating women and babies whose diet structure was simple in the region. However, some people in the area were still under the status of iodine deficiency suggesting that surveillance should be enhanced in people who need more iodine and efficient measures, should be taken.

Objective: To study the method of decreasing dental anxiety (DA) on root canal treatment., Methods: 360 patients were divided into group A, group B and group C. Parol and written notice about the content of root canal treatment were given to the patients of group A, written notice and psychological communication to group B, written notice, psychological communication and local anesthesia to group C. The change of DA level were measured in patients of three groups during treatment period. The patient's fear degree were evaluated by means of visual analogue scale (VAS). The data before and after root canal treatment were analyzed., Results: The level of DA decreased along with the increasing of treatment frequency. The decreasing of group C was most obviously, next to group B. There were statistical difference before and after root canal preparation in the DA of same group (P < 0.01). There were statistical difference in DA and VAS among group A, B and C (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Psychological communication and anesthesia can obviously decrease dental anxiety level on root canal treatment.

Objective: To study the expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) in preeclampsia placenta and the relation with preeclampsia attacks., Methods: Forty-four samples from pregnant women with preeclampsia (preeclampsia group), 38 samples from pregnant women with eclampsia, and 49 samples from normal pregnancies (control group) were obtained. We detected the expression of EMMPRIN in placenta by immunohistochemistry and the expression of EMMPRIN mRNA by RT-PCR., Results: (1) EMMPRIN positive expression: in preeclampsia group, the moderate expression rate was 18% (8/44) and the strong positive rate was 9% (4/44); in eclampsia group moderate positive rate was 21% (8/38) and strong positive rate 13% (5/38). The difference of the two groups was insignificant (P > 0.05). In control group the moderate positive rate was 12% (6/49) and strong positive rate 82% (40/49), the difference from the preeclampsia and the eclampsia groups was significant (P < 0.001). (2) EMMPRIN mRNA expression: in preeclampsia group EMMPRIN mRNA expression in term placenta (37 - 40 gestational weeks) was 0.342 +/- 0.002, and in eclampsia group 0.344 +/- 0.023; the difference between the two groups was insignificant (P > 0.05). In control group EMMPRIN mRNA expression in term placenta (37 - 40 gestational weeks) was 0.872 +/- 0.094, the differences between the control group and preeclampsia and eclampsia groups were both significant (P < 0.001)., Conclusion: The decrease in the expression of EMMPRIN in placenta is an important cause of preeclampsia onset; expression rate of EMMPRIN may serve as an indicator in predicting preeclampsia.

Background & Objective: Etoposide (VP-16) is one of the most common chemotherapy drugs, but its usage is limited by drug resistance. Some researches on solid tumors show that cisplatin (DDP) have synergetic effect with VP-16. This study was to evaluate synergetic cytotoxicity of VP-16 and DDP to leukemia cell line K562, and explore the mechanism., Methods: K562 cells were treated with VP-16 (0 or 5 microg/ml) and DDP (0, 0.3, 3, 15, or 30 microg/ml) in different combination patterns. Inhibitory effect of VP-16 and DDP on survival of K562 cells was measured by MTT assay. Cell apoptosis was evaluated by AO/EB double fluorescent labeling. The expression of topoisomerase (TOPO) II alpha and II beta, and transcription factor Sp1 and Sp3 were measured by semi-quantitive reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot., Results: MTT assay showed significant synergetic cytotoxicity of VP-16 and DDP. VP-16 in combination with DDP obviously enhanced cell apoptosis. RT-PCR showed that DDP significantly up-regulated the expression of TOPO II and Sp1 in concentration-dependent manners (TOPO II alpha, II beta, and Sp1 were up-regulated by 36%, 25%, and 75% of control, respectively, when treated with 30 microg/ml of DDP), and down-regulated Sp3 by 49% of control; VP-16 (5 microg/ml) down-regulated TOPO II alpha by 71.9%, and up-regulated Sp3 by 14%; VP-16 (5 microg/ml) in combination with DDP (30 microg/ml) up-regulated TOPO II alpha by 83%, II beta by 11%, and Sp1 by 58% when compared with using VP-16 alone (but the levels were lower than using DDP alone), and down-regulated Sp3 by 61.3% when compared with using DDP alone. Western blot showed similar results to RT-PCR., Conclusion: Through up-regulating TOPO II, DDP could enhance the chemotherapeutic effect of VP-16 on K562 cells by provide more target enzyme to act on.

Objective: To study the expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) during normal pregnancy., Methods: The expression of EMMPRIN was studied with immunohistochemistry in normal pregnancy., Results: The expression of EMMPRIN was obvious, and appeared mainly on membrane of cytotrophoblast, syncytiotrophoblast, cytotrophoblast column of the villi of gestational weeks 6 to 9, mid-term and term placenta and extravillous cytotrophoblast of deciduas of mid-term and term placenta. The expression reached a peak level at gestational week 6 and gradually decreased from week 7 and stabilized to a low level at mid-term and term placenta when the expression of extravillous cytotrophoblast of deciduas was increased., Conclusion: EMMPRIN may be an important factor for implantation during early pregnancy and participate in maintaining gestation during mid-term and term pregnancy.

Objective: Data accumulated over the past years have led to widespread recognition that neurogenesis, the emergence of new neurons, persists in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of the adult mammalian brain, and can be increased by seizures in multiple models. Also, aberrant reorganization of dentate granule cell axons, the mossy fiber sprouting, occurs in human temporal lobe epilepsy and rodent epilepsy models. However a number of studies suggest that the immature brain is less vulnerable to the morphologic alteration of hippocampus after seizures. The goal of this study was to determine whether the seizures can induce dentate granule cell neurogenesis and mossy fiber sprouting in the immature rat., Methods: Seizures was elicited by unilateral microinfusion of kainic acid (KA, 1 micro g) into the amygdula at postnatal day 15 (P15). Rat pups were given bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) intraperitoneally on day 5 after KA administration and killed 7 d or 21 d later. The brains were processed for BrdU mitotic labeling combined with double-label immunohistochemistry using neuron-specific, early differentiation marker TuJ1 (betaIII tubulin) or granule-specific marker CaBP (calcium-binding protein calbindin D28k) as well as glia-specific marker GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein). Mossy fiber sprouting in intermolecular layer and CA3 subfield was assessed in Timm-stained sections both 1 month and 3 months after KA administration by using a rating scale and density measurement., Results: The dentate BrdU-immunoreactive cells of the KA-treated rats increased significantly compared with those of control rats on day 7 and 21 after BrdU administration (7 d: 244 +/- 15 vs. 190 +/- 10; 21 d: 218 +/- 19 vs. 133 +/- 12, P < 0.05). Approximately 80.2% and 78.7% of BrdU-labeled cells coexpressed TuJ1 in KA-treated rats and control rats on day 7 after BrdU respectively (P > 0.05). On 21 d after BrdU, 60.2% and 58.2% of dentate BrdU-labeled cells coexpressed GaBP in KA-treated rats and control rats respectively (P > 0.05). GFAP colocalized with 3%-5% dentate BrdU-labeled cells in the rats of both groups on day 7 and 21 after BrdU. It was also demonstrated that status epilepticus at P15 did not result in any detectable mossy fiber sprouting within the hippocampus both 1 month and 3 months after KA administration., Conclusions: KA induced seizures can increase granule cell neurogenesis in the immature rat. Most of newly appeared cells migrate from subgranular proliferation zone (SGZ) into granule cell layer, the hilus as well as the molecular layer, and there they can differentiate into granule neurons. These observations also indicate that there is an early developmental resistance to seizure-induced mossy fiber sprouting in the immature brain.

Objective: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the temporal and spatial expression of estrogen receptor (ER), 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (17beta-HSD) in uterine endometria and the endometrial-myometrial interface (EMI) of adenomyosis and the effects of estrogen activity-related molecules on the occurrence of adenomyosis., Methods: Thirty-three cases of normal endometria (and myometrial) and eighteen cases of endometria (and myometrial) with adenomyosis were collected. Immunohistochemical assay was performed to locate the ERalpha, ERbeta, 17beta-HSDI and 17beta-HSDII in endometria and EMI., Results: The ERalpha positive cell number in glandular epithelial cells at the early proliferative phase increased evidently in adenomyosis (90%), while it was 60% in normal endometria. We found ERalpha signal in cytoplasm in glandular epithelial cells of adenomyosis endometria as well as in nucleus. Compared with normal endometrium (early proliferative phase: +; late proliferative phase: ++; late secretory phase: +), eutopic endometrium with adenomyosis exhibited a higher level of 17beta-HSDI (early proliferative phase: ++; late proliferative phase: +++; late secretory phase: ++). The intensity of 17beta-HSDIIin glandular epithelial cells of eutopic endometrium with adenomyosis (early proliferative phase: +++; secretory phase: ++++) was also higher than that of normal endometrium (early proliferative phase: - approximately ++; secretory phase: +++). Higher intensities of ERalpha, ERbeta and 17beta-HSDIand lower intensities of 17beta-HSDII were observed in EMI than in the eutopic endometrium of adenomyosis., Conclusions: The elevation of ERalpha positive cell number, 17beta-HSDI level as well as the insufficient compensation of 17beta-HSDII in eutopic endometrium with adenomyosis and the change in expression pattern of ERalpha, ERbeta, 17beta-HSDI and 17beta-HSDII in EMI lead to the local enhancement of estrogen effect, which would promote cell proliferation.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of maternal serum activin A, follistatin and their mRNA expression in placenta with preeclampsia at term., Methods: Twenty women with preeclampsia were enrolled in this study. Twenty healthy pregnancies matched for gestational ages were recruited as control group. Maternal serum activin A and follistatin in two groups were compared by using enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Placental tissues were obtained from preeclampsia and healthy control groups for analysis of activin A mRNA and follistatin mRNA expression by using quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Linear correlation analysis was used to explore the relationship between placental avtivin A mRNA and maternal serum activin A concentrations., Results: (1) Maternal serum concentrations of activin A are significantly increased in preeclampsia group (33.7 +/- 6.6) micro g/L compared with control group (9.9 +/- 2.1) micro g/L (P < 0.01). Maternal serum follistatin levels were not different between preeclampsia group (5.1 +/- 0.6) micro g/L and control group (4.7 +/- 0.3) micro g/L (P > 0.05). (2) The placentas of preeclampsia group expressed activin A mRNA levels at significantly higher levels 1.11 +/- 0.21 than that of control group 0.61 +/- 0.17 (P < 0.01). The expression of follistatin mRNA were not different between preeclampsia group 0.57 +/- 0.31 and control group 0.54 +/- 0.27 (P > 0.05). (3) In preeclampsia and control groups, maternal serum activin A concentrations had a significant positive correlation with activin A mRNA expression in placentas (r = 0.89, P < 0.01)., Conclusion: These results suggest that activin A is increased in women with preeclampsia, the elevated levels of activin A due to increased placental production.

Objective: Neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus of hippocampus persists in brain of the immature and adult mammalian including human and it can be regulated by physiological and pathological events including nutritional status and seizures. The present study was designed to investigate the potential effects of malnutrition followed by status epileptics on hippocampal neurogenesis in the immature rat., Methods: Rat pups were divided into 4 groups: malnourished (M), nourished (N), malnourished plus seizures (MS) and nourished plus seizures (NS). The rat pups of group M and group MS were maintained on a starvation regimen from postnatal day 2 (P2) to P18. The status epilepticus of the rat pups in group MS and group NS was elicited by unilateral microinfusion of kainic acid (KA) into the amygdula at P15. Rat pups of the 4 groups were given bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) intraperitoneally twice daily for 2 days beginning at P17. At P19, the rat pups were killed and the brains were processed for BrdU mitotic labeling combined with double-label immunohistochemistry using early neuron- or glia-specific markers TuJ1 (beta III tubulin) or GFAP (glial fibrillary acidic protein)., Results: There were no significant differences in the latent time of seizure between group M and group N [(12.4 +/- 2.6) min vs. (12.1 +/- 2.9) min, P < 0.05]. Histological assessment did not reveal any evidence of hippocampal cell loss after status epilepticus in either group. BrdU-labeled cells were significantly higher in the rats of group MS (374 +/- 18) than group M (303 +/- 20), group NS (312 +/- 24) than group N (269 +/- 18), respectively (P < 0.01). There was also significant difference between group M and group N, group MS and group NS, respectively (P < 0.01). No significant difference was seen between the rats of group NS and group M (P > 0.05). Approximately 60% of BrdU-labeled cells coexpressed TuJ1, and 5% approximately 10% of those co-expressed GFAP., Conclusion: Early malnutrition do not alter KA seizure susceptibility and the behavioral manifestations of seizures at P15. Although malnutrition and status epilepticus can increase the proliferation of newly developed cells in the immature rat respectively, malnutrition followed by status epilepticus further increases this proliferation. Furthermore, most of newly developed cells differentiate into early neurons.

Vapour pressure effect of sample evaporation in blowing powder sample into arc discharge is described in this paper. Since vapour pressure of basic composition of sample in arc is very high, evaporation of this basic composition will be reduced greatly, and the evaporation of impurity elements in the sample are stronger than basic composition, because vapour pressure of impurity elements in arc are lower than the basic composition. This effect is characteristic in sample evaporation during blowing powder sample into arc source. Determination limit of this method is therefore lowered due to the existence of this effect.
