Objective To compare the differences of corneal keratometry and corneal astigmatism measured by Lenstar LS900 and KR-1 auto-refractor of age-related cataract. Methods Seventy-six patients with cataract (76 eyes) were included in this study. Flat keratometry (K1), steep keratometry (K2), mean keratometry (Km) and astigmatism were measured before operation by Lenstar LS900 and KR-1 auto-refractor. The parameters of astigmatism were transformed into J0 and J45 by Fourier vector transform, and which was compared. Results Values of K1, K2, Km, J0 and J45 were (43.960±1.440) D, (44.901±1.319)D, (44.430±1.336)D, 0.043±0.402 and 0.017±0.425 measured by Lenstar LS900, respectively, and which measured by KR-1 auto-refractor were (44.007 ± 1.400)D, (44.859 ± 1.338)D, (44.433 ± 1.330)D,-0.058 ± 0.322 and 0.031 ± 0.419, respectively. There was no statistical difference between these values measured by two instruments ( P>0.05). The Bland-Altman plots showed that two devices had coincident results for corneal parameters. Conclusion Lenstar LS900 and KR-1 auto-refractor can be applied in the measurement of corneal astigmatism of age-related cataract before surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Starch occurs naturally in the form of semicrystalline granules, and is composed of two types of carbohydrate molecules, amylose (AM) and amylopectin (AP). Starch granules and starch molecules have sizes in the range of 1-100 μm and 20-250 nm, respectively; these size ranges are among the key factors affecting the functional properties of starch. Asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) is a size-based separation technique. The major difference between AF4 and dynamic light scattering or microscopy techniques is that AF4 enables the separation of particles based on their size; consequently, the elution profile can be converted to the size distribution of the samples. In the last two decades, AF4 systems, when coupled online with multiangle light scattering (MALS) and differential refractive index (dRI) detectors (AF4-MALS-dRI), have demonstrated to be applicable for the size characterization of starch at the molecular level. Unlike size exclusion chromatography (SEC), AF4 systems use an open channel that does not require a stationary phase or packing materials. Thus, the shear scission of AP molecules during AF4 separation is minimized. The size detection range of a commercial AF4 system ranges from 1 nm to 10 μm, which is smaller than the size range of starch granules. In this study, a home-made AF4 system was developed, and its capability for the size characterization of starch granules extracted from sweet potato, lotus seed, and rice was investigated. The performance of the developed AF4 system was evaluated by running a mixture of polystyrene (PS) with diameter of 2, 6, 12, and 20 μm, respectively. Baseline separation of four PS samples was achieved, and the resolution for 6 μm PS and 12 μm PS was 1.40. The detection limit of the developed AF4 system was higher than that of commercial AF4 systems. Thus, the developed AF4 system is promising for the separation and characterization of starch granules. The effect of the composition of the carrier liquid on the AF4 separation of starch granules was also studied. Moreover, the accuracy of AF4 in terms of size characterization of the starch granules was evaluated by optical microscopy (OM). The results revealed that the type of dispersant and viscosity of the carrier liquid affect the accuracy of size characterization of the starch granules. The size distribution of rice starch granules obtained using a carrier liquid containing 0.01% (w/v) sodium dodecyl sulfate (used as a dispersant), 0.02% (w/v) NaN 3 (used as a bactericide), and 0.001% (w/v) hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (used to adjust the viscosity of the carrier liquid) was in agreement with that obtained from OM. Furthermore, a commercial AF4 system coupled with MALS and dRI detectors was employed for the separation and characterization of starch molecules. A molecularly dispersed solution is necessary for the reliable molecular characterization of starch. The effect of the starch dissolution temperature on the AF4 characterization of starch was also investigated. The optimal dissolution temperature for lotus seed and rice starch granules was 75 ℃, while that for sweet potato starch granules was 78 ℃; this difference is mainly attributed to the different botanical origins of the granules. The results showed that the ratio of the radius of gyration ( R g ) to the hydrodynamic radius ( R h ) of rice starch and sweet potato starch is in the range of 0.9-1.1 over the molar mass range of 10 6 -10 8 g/mol. For rice starch, the R g / R h ratio is between 1.2 and 1.4. Rice starch has the highest apparent density among the three starches, indicating that rice starch molecules have a dense structure. The results demonstrated that the AF4 system developed in this study is rapid and accurate for the size characterization of starch granules. The developed AF4 system, when combined with commercial AF4 systems coupled online with MALS and dRI detectors, can provide technical support to study the relationship between the size from the nanoscale to the microscale and functional properties of starch.

Objective: To investigate the accuracy of the terahertz system in differentiating hypopharyngeal cancer from normal tissue and its role in determining the pathological incised margin of hypopharyngeal cancer. Method: The transplantation model of hypopharyngeal cancer in 5-week-old male BALB/c nude mice were established by subcutaneous injection. The obtained transplanted tumor specimens were pathologically diagnosed to determine the extent of tumor tissue. Tumor tissue, normal tissue and paracellular tissue of transplantation tumor were scanned by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The differential spectral data were obtained through the detection of frozen tissue sections and paraffin tissue sections, respectively. The results were compared by t -test. Result: The tarahertz absorption coefficient of tumor tissues was higher than that of normal tissues, and the difference was statistically significant when the detection frequency was greater than 0.48 THz in frozen sections（ P <0.05）. In the paraffin sections, the difference was statistically significant within the effective spectrum range of 0.2-1.6 THz（ P <0.01）. The difference of refractive index between tumor tissue and normal tissue was significant in specimens treated in two ways（ P <0.01）. The absorption coefficient of adjacent tissue felt between that of normal tissue and tumor tissue. Conclusion: Terahertz technology can distinguish tumor tissues and normal tissues accurately, and can detect the spectral changes in adjacent tissues sensitively. Stray light analysis has great benefits in designing Raman spectrometry system, which is the sensitive detection system of weak optical signal. In this paper, optical design software and Solidworks are utilized to optimize the optical and mechanical structure. The system resolution is 0.7 nm, and the volume is 110 mm×95 mm, which belongs to portable and miniature Raman spectrometer. Based on the stray light simulation model, we made an analysis of ray tracing simulation for this system. First, the stray light come with the incident ray were suppressed by the aperture stop. Then the receiver of stray light was introduced and improved in the design progress to suppress internal stray light, especially for zero-order diffraction light of plane grating. The improved receiver of stray light is more effectively using the internal space of the spectrometer and analysis results show that a 50% reduction in the number of stray light and stray light normalized irradiance intensity from 10-5 down to 10-7. The analysis shows that the improved receiver of stray light can effectively suppress stray light, which is beneficial to weak signal detection, and provide reference for design and adjustment of the miniature Raman spectrometer.

With the rapid development of economy and society in our country, atmospheric haze has become a prominent environmental issue. Measuring haze particles is also important. Polarized ultraviolet light is scattered by atmospheric haze particles, the changes of scattered light polarization state(Stokes vector and the degree of polarization) in atmospheric haze can reflect the physical properties of the particles (particle size and the complex refractive index, etc.). Based on Mie scattering theory, line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight of a single UV scattering model is established. On one hand, the effects of the physical properties of the single and chain-structure spherical particles for the UV light polarization properties are studied. On the other hand, based on Monte Carlo Simulation, the impacts of haze particle concentration on polarization state at a fixed particle size distribution are discussed. The simulation results show that: with the particle size of single spherical increasing, the scattered light intensity in Stokes vector (Is) is significantly enhanced. Is shows a trend of first increase then decrease with the increase of the complex refractive index’s imaginary part. The degree of polarization is constantly increasing with the increase of the complex refractive index’s imaginary part and the imaginary part of the complex refractive index is small, the degree of polarization trend of fast increase. With the concentration of particles in haze increasing when the distribution of particle size is a fixed value, haze particles scattering coefficient, extinction coefficient and absorption coefficient showed a linear increase, while Is is reduced after the first increases. For chain-structure spherical particles, with the increase of the number of particles, Is shows a tendency to increase. As the same time, degrees of polarization distinguish whether the chain-structure spherical particles are made up by the same spherical particle. In the chain-structure consisted of same spherical particles, Is increases linearly with the increase of the number of particles and the degree of polarization does not change. The Is under the chain-structure consisted of different spherical particles can distinguish particles’ physical properties according to the changing trend of scattering light polarization state.

As emerging modalities, terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and imaging have been widely applied to investigate the optical properties of different biological tissues. The substrate materials are usually needed for biological spectroscopic measurements. The ultra-broadband and facility in remote sensing of the terahertz air-biased-coherent-detection (ABCD) system mean it is a good potential tool for the spectroscopic study of biological tissues. In this paper, the optical parameters of four typical substrate materials (quartz, high-density polyethylene, teflon and paraffin) are measured using terahertz ABCD spectrometer. The absorption coefficients and refractive indices are presented in the frequency range of 1～15 THz. It is demonstrated that high-density polyethylene and paraffin are good candidates as sample substrate for broadband terahertz biological spectroscopic measurement. However, quartz and teflon which are common substrate materials in narrowband (0.1～3 THz) terahertz system can not be utilized in high terahertz frequency range because they have strong absorption above 5 THz.

Based on the terahertz time-domain reflection spectroscopy, the optical parameters of anhydrous D-glucose polycrystalline, i.e. the refractive index and the absorption coefficient were extracted by using iterative and genetic algorithm, respectively. After comparing and analyzing the two algorithms we had drawn the following conclusions: first, the calculation efficiency of iterative algorithm was improved using the solution of weak absorption approximation as initial values. However, the iterative algorithm was sensitive to the initial values. When the big difference between the initial values and real values existed, the accuracy of optical constants would be affected; Secondly, the genetic algorithm was not insensitive to the initial populations. It ensured the convergence of the algorithm and the population diversity through the design of parameter coding, initial population, genetic manipulation, parameter control and constraint condition. Last, compared with the iterative algorithm, the optical parameters obtained by the genetic algorithm had higher accuracy. Therefore, we suggest that the optical parameters of materials with higher accuracy based on the THz spectroscopy can be obtained by using an intelligent optimization algorithm.

Chaenomeles speciosa fruits were extracted using water. The extracts were precipitated with 20%~95% (φ) ethanol, respectively. The amount of total polysaccharide was measured with phenol-sulfuric acid method. A method using high-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC) equipped with multiangle laser-light-scattering photometry (MALLS) and differential refractometry (RI) was presented for determining the molecular weight and molecular weigh distribution. RAW264.7 macrophage were cultured and stimulated with the polysaccharides in vitro and the production of nitric oxide in the cells was determined by the Griess assay. The aim of the study is to determine the amount and the molecular weight of the polysaccharides from Chaenomeles speciosa fruits, and preliminary investigate the immunomodulatory activity, The study provided the basis datas for the further research of Chaenomeles speciosa fruits. , and provided a simple and system method for the research of natural polysaccharide. The ethanol fractional precipitation showed that the order of total polysaccharide content was 95%>80%>40% ≥60%>20%. The results indicated that most polysaccharide from Chaenomeles speciosa fruits might be precipitated when ethanol concentration was up to 95% (T) and the crude polysaccharide purity had risen from 35. 1% to 45. 0% when the concentration of ethanol increased from 20% to 95%. HPSEC-MALLS-RI system showed that all the polysaccharide samples had the similar compositions. They appeared three chromatographic peaks and the retention time were not apparently different. The Mw were 6. 570 X 10(4) g . mol-1 and 1. 393 X 10(4) g . mol-1 respectively, and one less than 10 000 which was failure to obtain accurate values. The molecular weight of the first two polysaccharide distribution index(Mw/Mn)were 1. 336 and 1. 639 respectively. The polysaccharide samples had not exhibited immunomodulatory activity assessed on the basis of nitric oxide production by RAW264. 7 macrophage cells in the experiment.

Pollen is an important part of bioaerosols, and its complex refractive index is a crucial parameter for study on optical characteristics and detection, identification of bioaerosols. The reflection spectra of pear pollen within the 2. 5 - 15µm waveband were measured by squash method. Based on the measured data, the complex refractive index of pear pollen within the wave-band of 2. 5 to 15 µm was calculated by using Kramers-Kroning (K-K) relation, and calculation deviation about incident angle and different reflectivities at high and low frequencies.were analyzed. The results indicate that 18 degrees angle of incidence and different reflectivities at high and low frequencies have little effect on the results, and it is practicable to calculate the complex refractive index of pollen based on its reflection spectral data. The data of complex refractive index of pollen have some reference value for optical characteristics of pollen, detection and identification of bioaerosols.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is used to investigate the spectra properties of the wheat kernel with various deterioration degrees in the frequency range of 0.2-1.6 THz. The absorption coefficient and refractive index of normal, worm-eaten, moldy and sprouting wheat kernel were calculated. Comparison of the experimental data, clearly indicates that changes in the absorption coefficient and refractive index are recorded, different wheat samples have different optical parameters. The absorption coefficient of normal wheat sample is more obvious and higher than others; refractive index increases as the frequency increases. THz-TDS can be employed to evaluate the quality of wheat kernel nondestructively. The results show that THz-TDS is a promising and new experimental method for quality analyses and control for agricultural production detection. This study will provide an important guidance for nondestructive detecting the quality of stored-grain.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) is a rapid, label-free, high-precision technique of biological sensing and analysis. The investigation on the characteristics of provides theoretical basis and instructions for the applications of SPR A Kretschmann-structure surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor based on wavelength modulation was developed, and also its sensing performances in the bulk solution was investigated. Measurements with different concentrations of bulk ethanol and ethylene glycol solutions show that the resonant wavelength shows a low sensitivity, but a higher linear response to the change in refractive index (RI), when RI is relatively smaller. With increasing refractive index , the sensitivity of resonance wavelength to changes in the refractive index increases. In the refractive index range of 1. 407 0-1. 430 RIU, sensitivity reaches to 11 487 nm RIU-1. The sensor resonance wavelength stability is 0. 213 8 nm, and the minimum resolution of refractive index approaches to 10-6 RIU. The advantages of the surface plasmon resonance sensor developed here results in simple operation, high sensitivity, wide detection range, low resolution, makes it an important candidate in chemical and biological sensing.

Surface plasmon resonance, which utilizes the resonance of optical evanescent wave with the metal surface plasmon wave, has been developed into a high sensitivity, rapid, label-less measurement method for chemical and biological analysis. In order to improve the spectral sensitivity in refractive index for a side polished fiber surface plasmon resonance sensor, the whole cladding layer and part of core of a multimode fiber was polished off. Additionally, an extra chrome layer with relatively high refractive index was coated on the polished zone before a gold film. The results showed that the sensor can measure the refractive index range from 1.333 to 1. 431 RIU, with the average spectral sensitivity of 4.11 x 10(3) nm RIU(-1), which is better than the reported results. Especially, in the refractive index range of 1. 417 1. 431 RIU, the sensitivity reaches to 1.09 x 10(4) nm RIU(-1). The minimum resolution of approximately 3.6 x 10(-5) RIU was estimated by a combination analysis with the sensor sensitivity and stability. The superiorities possessed by the proposed sensor in high sensitivity, wide detection range, small size and good stability and reproducibility, etc., make it a good candidate for food testing, environmental monitoring, biomedical testing and other related fields.

Onion soluble solids content (SSC) was detected using near-infrared (924-1720 nm) reflectance spectra. Three cultivars of onions, harvested at different period, were selected for experiment and the total number of samples is 268. SSC reference value of onion juice was determined using the temperature compensated refractometer. Some pre-processing methods, such as S-G smoothing, scatter correction, and derivation, were compared to establish a statistical model based on partial least squares regression (PLSR) method. The results show that the avitzky-Golay smoothing with window 32 and span 10 is more efficient. The determination correlation coefficient of prediction R2 is 0.87 and root mean square error (RMSEP) is 2.42 degrees Brix. Compared to the 2nd derivation, the 1st derivation got better prediction result, but the spectra scatter correction is the best (R2 = 0.88, RMSEP of = 2.31 degrees Brix). The optimal prediction (R2 = 0.90, RMSEP = 1.84 degrees Brix and RPD = 3) was built based on crossing validation modeling, which shows that infrared reflectance spectroscopy with scatter correction pre-processing is feasible for onions soluble solids detection.

Variability of the backscattering characteristics of the alga amphidinium carterae hulburt and its interpretation were examined using the measured data performed during July 2012 in the laboratory. The results indicated that the backscattering coefficient has the characteristic of spectral variability, and was highly power correlated with the chlorophyll concentration, the minimum of the correlation coefficient reached up to 0.96; otherwise, the shape of the particulate backscattering coefficient spectra was also changed from the low chlorophyll concentration to the higher concentration because of the influence of chlorophyll absorption. At the same time, the authors got another value of the particulate backscattering ratio ranging between 0.006 4 and 0.011 6 at 620 nm, although a global increase in particulate backscattering ratio with growing chlorophyll concentration was also visible, but the regularity is not obviously especially at the higher chlorophyll concentration and unlike backscattering coefficient, the spectral shapes of the backscattering ratio remained constant. The authors also found that particle density was one of the main factors controlling the variability of particles backscattering ratio for the pure algal water, and the authors fit a power law function to them and the correlation coefficient at 620 nm was as high as 0.98.

Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy (THz-TDS) technique has a wide range of applications in substances identification and quantitative analysis. In the present paper, we report absorption spectra and index of refraction of 14 kinds of pure cephalosporins in 0.2-2.6 THz, in which eight kinds have apparent absorption peaks, while the others have different index of refraction. Based on these results, different kinds of antibiotics can be identified. Besides, according to THz absorption spectra of both pure sample and real pills we calculated the contents of cefixime in the two pills produced by two manufacturers. Compared with the contents marked on the package, relative errors are 9.38% and 0.92%, respectively. The results manifest that THz-TDS technique is reliable and promising in medicine detection.

The refractive index sensing characteristics of the polarization maintaining (PM) microstructured optical fiber (MOF) chirped grating was systematically investigated based on finite element method (FEM) and transfer matrix method (TMM). The chirp Bragg grating reflection spectrum was numerically analyzed with the fiber air holes injected with different refractive index medium, and the relation between the reflection spectrum area and the analyte refractive index is discussed here. The analysis results show that when the analyte refractive index increases, the reflection spectrum area will be reduced; and the detection demodulation is simplified with the light intensity demodulation. Moreover, the dependence of the reflection spectrum on the center big holes size, the chirp coefficient and the site function was studied. Since two polarization modes respond similarly to the outside perturbation, the fiber possesses high stability. The results provide the theoretical basis for the application of PM-MOF grating in the optical fiber refractive index sensor and the optical fiber label-free biosensing.

The present article measured the absorption coefficient spectra and refractive index spectra of nitrofurantoin original drug, which is one kind of nitrofuran drugs, in the terahertz frequency range from 0.2 to 1.8 THz using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy. The results showed that there exist a number of characteristic absorption peaks of nitrofurantoin with different intensity in the range and the absorption coefficient spectra can be used to identify nitrofurantoin. The article also simulated absorption coefficient spectra of nitrofurantoin molecule within 0.2 - 1.8 THz using density functional theory by Gaussian software, and vibrational modes of some peaks in the experimental absorption coefficient spectra were analyzed and identified. The results show that the experimental absorption peaks at 1.25 and 1.60 THz correspond with the theoretical peaks at 1.30 and 1.67 THz, and these experimental peaks were caused by intramolecular vibrational modes of nitrofurantoin.

Resonant grating waveguide (RGW) biosensor has been widely investigated in recent years. The system has several advantages such as minimizing, label-free, high throughput, real time monitoring and so on. The sensitivity of RGW biosensor was theoretically analyzed for different resonance wavelength. Sensitivity to the refractive index and thickness of the sample was analyzed using rigorous coupled wave analysis method. Results indicate that the sensitivity to refractive index is constant for a certain resonance wavelength as the thickness of sample does not change. The sensitivity to refractive index is enhanced with the increase of resonance wavelength. RGW with 1 250 nm resonance wavelength is approximately 4 times as sensitive as RGW with 830 nm resonance wavelength. The sensitivity to thickness drastically decreased at first, and then achieved zero for a certain resonance wavelength as the refractive index of sample is invariable. It was showed that it is limited to test sample thickness for every RGW. RGW with 1 250 nm resonance wavelength is approximately 2 times the measure range as RGW with 830 nm resonance wavelength. The sensitivity to thickness is enhanced with the increase of resonance wavelength. RGW with 1 250 nm resonance wavelength is approximately 3 times as sensitive as RGW with 830 nm resonance wavelength. The above results reveal that the sensitivity to both sample refractive index and sample thickness is enhanced with the increase of resonance wavelength. And the capability of testing sample thickness improves with longer resonance wavelength. The results provided the theory basis for resonance wavelength choice of RGW biosensor.

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) technique has a wide range of applications in nondestructive testing. After many years study, people have found that many materials have characteristic absorptions in terahertz range. This letter studies the THz spectra of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ), a food additive that was reported excessively in Mak chicken of McDonald. The authors applied terahertz nondestructive testing technique in identifying this material, testing the absorption and refractive index. The absorption spectra of TBHQ and flour mixture in 0.2-2.2 THz were also investigated. The simulation of vibration for single molecular was undertaken. The results represent that this method is possible by comparing the difference in absorption lines and this method paves the way for detecting food additives.

Objective: To explore the relationship between best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and refraction parameters in myopia., Methods: Two thousand two hundred and seventy-four patients (4245 eyes) with different degrees of myopia were collected. Their BCVA, diopter of spherical (DS), diopter of cylinder (DC), astigmatism axis, axial length (AL) and corneal thickness were detected. The influence of those parameters on BCVA was studied and the mathematical model of the relationship between BCVA and other parameters including the age and gender of patients was established., Results: The logistic regression analysis showed that there were correlations between the BCVA (y) and DS (x1), DC (x2), gender (x3), AL (x4), corneal thickness (x5), astigmatism axis (x6) and age (x7) (P<0.05): y=0.580 6-0.034 0 x1-0.046 8 x2+0.056 5 x3+0.016 5 x4+ 0.0007 x5+0.000 2 x6-0.005 8 x7., Conclusion: For people with myopia, age, gender and corneal thickness have small effect on BCVA, while the DS, DC, AL and astigmatism axis have significant effect on BCVA. The BCVA would decline following the extension of DS, DC and AL. It is helpful to assess the vision of myopia by analyzing the refraction parameters comprehensively.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of keratometric value derived from one zone of Orbscan II mean power map after Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in combination with Holladay IOL Consultant software to calculate the intraocular lens (IOL) power., Methods: A two-part study was conducted at a referral practice. Part 1 was a prospective study of 118 eyes undergoing LASIK. The changes in Orbscan II mean power maps at four central zones (1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 mm) were compared with the cornea power calculated from pre-LASIK data to determine the optimum Orbscan II correlation zone. In Part 2, the power of optimum measured by Orbscan II after LASIK was applied to IOL calculations for 62 eyes undergoing LASIK. And the results were compared with the IOL power calculated by the pre-LASIK data., Results: (1) An analysis at the Orbscan II 1.5 mm measurement zone demonstrated an underestimation of net cornea power after LASIK while the 3.0 mm zones demonstrated an overestimation. The 2.0 mm and 2.5 mm zones best approximated the net cornea power calculated from pre-LASIK data; (2) The cornea power at 2.5 mm from Orbscan II was selected for IOL calculations in combination with Holladay IOL Consultant software Holladay II and HofferQ formula. The refractive error calculated by Holladay II and HofferQ formula were (0.47 ± 0.75) D and (0.52 ± 0.83) D versus the IOL power calculated by clinical history method. The refractive errors of two formula within ± 0.50 D were 48.4% and 43.5% and within ± 1.0 D 80.6% and 74.2%., Conclusions: The cornea power from 2.5 mm Orbscan II zone after LASIK in combination with Holladay II or HofferQ formula can accurately predict the IOL power for cataract surgery.

The purpose of the present paper is to model a physical polarimetric bidirectional reflectance distribution function (pBRDF), which can character not only the non-Lambertian but also the polarized features in order that the pBRDF can be applied to analyze the relationship between the degree of polarization and the physiological and biochemical parameters of leaves quantitatively later. Firstly, the bidirectional polarized reflectance distributions from several leaves surfaces were measured by the polarized goniometer developed by Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The samples of leaves include two pieces of zea mays L. leaves (young leaf and mature leaf) and a piece of E. palcherrima wild leaf. Non-Lambertian characteristics of directional reflectance from the surfaces of these three leaves are obvious. A Cook-Torrance model was modified by coupling the polarized Fresnel equations to simulate the bidirectional polarized reflectance properties of leaves surfaces. The three parameters in the modified pBRDF model, such as diffuse reflectivity, refractive index and roughness of leaf surface were inversed with genetic algorithm (GA). It was found that the pBRDF model can fit with the measured data well. In addition, these parameters in the model are related with both the physiological and biochemical properties and the polarized characteristics of leaves, therefore it is possible to build the relationships between them later.

The authors have previously proposed a novel refractive index two-dimensional sensing technique named "parallel scan spectral surface plasmon resonance imaging". In the technique, with a line-shaped light illumination, an image acquired with CCD detector could provide both SPR wavelength information and one-dimensional spatial distribution, and then provide one-dimensional distribution of refractive index with further calculation. Thus, two-dimensional distribution of refractive index of the entire sensing area can be obtained with one-dimensional optical line parallel scan. The technique offers advantages of both high sensitivity and high throughput, and could have potential applications in microarray analysis. In the present paper, the authors improve the data processing methods of the technique. The authors use the refractive index of air as a reference to get over the problem of precision of the incident angle. The authors also sense a manually dotted Legionella pneumophila mip DNA probe array with this technique and prove the feasibility of sensing microarrays by this highly sensitive and label-free technique. The relation between the equivalent refractive indices and the concentrations of the dotted Legionella pneumophila mip DNA probes is obtained, which has important reference value for further study.

In this synthetic route, the raw materials are obtained easily and the conditions of reactions are smoothly. The products in some main procedures of the route have high yieds. This synthetic route is a new way of the compound, there hasn't been reported anywhere. It needs further studies to be practically applied. According to this synthetic routes, the authors studied technolygical conditions of the reactions of every step. Some products are analyzed by refractive index, IR, HNMR, and MS and confirmed its structure.

Zeeman split takes place for the hyperfine level structure of neutral atoms where magnetic field exists. In addition, being excited by right circularly polarized light and left circularly polarized light, atoms obey different transition rules. So, the absorption peak between the hyperfine Zeeman level shifts with respect to the absorption peak without magnetic field. Accordingly, the authors demonstrated a kind of simple and flexible method to stabilize the frequency of diode laser. The linewidth of diode laser was reduced to less than 1 MHz using this method. Through analyzing the experiment results, the authors found that when the sum of both shifts of the hyperfine level of atoms excited by right circularly polarized light and left circularly polarized light was equal to the FWHM (Full Width at Half Maximum) of the saturated absorption peak, the laser frequency was stabilized best.

NIR spectra of tobacco leaves were measured in the range of 12000 to 4000 cm(-1) using a Bruker MPA FT-NIR spectrometer. PLS calibration models were developed and optimized for rapid quantitative analysis of nicotine alkaloids, total sugar and total nitrogen contents in tobacco leaves. It was found that the prediction errors of the same component were significantly different when different spectral regions were used for PLS modeling, and the best spectral range is also different for each component. The study demonstrated that wavelength range selection is one of the important keys to optimizing the NIR calibration model. In this study it was found that the optimized calibration ranges for nicotine alkaloids, total sugar and total nitrogen are 9500-4231.2 cm(-1), 7502.1-4246.7 cm(-1) and 7502.1-4597.7 cm(-1), respectively. The Root Mean Square Error of Cross Validation (RMSECV) of the three calibration models are 0.081 5, 0.808 and 0.056, respectively.

Using YAG laser, the nonlinear optical refractive indexes of three kinds of metal phthalocyanines in DMF, ZnPCS(C6H32N8S4Zn), AlPCS (C56H32AlClN8S4) and AlPCP (C6H32AlClN8O4) were studied with the method of Z-scan. Their third-order susceptibilities chi(3) were also calculated. The result shows that different central ion and different substituents could affect their third-order susceptibilities. The mechanisms of third order optical nonlinearity and energy transfer in the photodynamic therapy were discussed.

The nonlinear optical effects of cobalt porphyrin have been investigated with three CW laser lines of 457.9, 488 and 514.5 nm, respectively. Three curves with peak followed by valley using the single beam z-scan technique were obtained. According to M Sheik-bahae's theory the sample has a negative nonlinear refractive index, that is, there is a thermal self-defocusing effect. Three curves of transmittance show a decrease with the increase in the incident laser power, which means that the sample has reverse saturated absorption property under the three laser wavelengths. It's well known that both thermal self-defocusing effect and reverse saturated absorption can lead to optical limiting. It was found that cobalt porphyrin has the optical limiting effect under those wavelengths, and that the critical value of optical limiting decreases with the decrease in laser wavelength. Furthermore, the effect of optical limiting is very good and the critical value is very low, so it's a new optical limiting material with a great potential application value. For that, it is possible to use the co-operation of both effects from cobalt porphyrin to produce a new kind of optical limiting device.

In this paper, the contribution of multiple reflections in thin film to the spectral emissivity of thin films of low absorption is discussed. The expression of emissivity of thin films derived here is related to the thin film thickness d and the optical constants n(lambda) and k(lambda). It is shown that in the special case d-->infinity the emissivity of thin films is equivalent to that of the bulk material. Realistic numerical and more precise general numerical results for the dependence of the emissivity on d, n(lambda) and k(lambda) are given.
