Medical history of the city of Rijeka is a rich treasure trove of events, celebrities and valuable innovations in the field of healthcare. The historical development of Rijeka was largely determined by her geopolitical position as a border town with a multicultural population, marked by strong conflicts of interest and numerous identity turmoil. The great exodus of the domicile population of Italian nationality after World War II has significantly changed the social picture of the city. Among many of such esuli (immigrants) were brothers Giovanni (b. 1932) and Abdon (b. 1933) Pamich, whose lives are reminiscent of the fate of many displaced people from Rijeka who were forced to live in exile after the war. After leaving their hometown during the formative years of their childhood, they had successful careers in Italy in the fields of medicine and healthcare. The older brother Giovanni became a successful surgeon and the younger Abdon a psychologist. Along with his positions as the head of general surgery at the Monfalcone and Gorizia Hospitals, Giovanni Pamich was teaching at the University of Trieste. Abdon Pamich collaborated with the best Italian tennis players in the field of sports psychology, and was a psychologist for the Italian handball team. They both practiced athletics, and Abdon Pamich won the silver medal in speed walking at the 1958 European Championships in Sweden and the gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In addition to emphasizing the achievements of the two brothers in the field of medicine, this paper also addresses the position of the migrant, which is highlighted in Robert Covaz’s book “Abdon Pamich, memorie di un marciatore (Rome, 2016), an exciting biography of an emigrant from Rijeka. The paper also explores the concept of thematizing the limits of differences and experiences of migration of Rijeka residents facing the existential issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BOOK clubs (Discussion groups) , *METROPOLIS , *SCIENTIFIC literature , *BOARD games , *PUBLIC libraries , *FORUMS - Abstract
Objective. The first objective of this paper was to explore the presence, characteristics and practices of book clubs in the public libraries of large Croatian cities. The second objective was to explore the experiences of book club leaders and their recommendations related to successful activities of book clubs. Methodology. The survey method was used to accomplish the research objectives. Eleven book club leaders in the public libraries of the cities Split, Rijeka, Osijek, Zadar and Pula, were surveyed. Findings. These are some of the research findings: meetings in book clubs are held once a month, they last from one to two hours and the meeting place is usually in the library; the book club members are mostly women; there are certain libraries which do not have a book club for persons of certain ages; the most common activity that takes place in the meetings is book discussion, but other activities are also present from meetings with writers to board games and drawing; the main criteria for selecting books to read are user preferences and availability of books; in majority of reading clubs the members read mostly foreign literature. Practical implications. The paper provides various insights that may be useful to book club leaders, as well as for other interested parties, to improve or initiate book club activities. Originality/value. Essential aspects of the activities of book clubs in the public libraries of the major Croatian cities are presented. A topic that is seldom represented in domestic scientific or professional literature is explored. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MUSICAL instruments , *CHURCH music , *PHOTOGRAPHY of art , *MUSIC scores , *MUSIC theory , *PIANO playing , *ORGANS (Musical instruments) - Abstract
The surname Venucci was found at several locations during earlier research into church archives located in Rijeka. The Venucci family is presented in musical historiographical works only sporadically, but it has not been the subject of thorough elaboration. This paper presents an outline of the life and work of musicians and organists Remo (1903-1987) and Wilma (1905-1983) Venucci, and consequently, at least in brief, Remo's twin brother Romolo (1903-1976) and brother Abdon (1910 - around 1980). The legacy of the Venucci family is located in the family's private archive. The fund contains music scores (autographs, manuscripts, printed scores), musical instruments, concert programs, newspaper music reports, documentation, correspondence, photographs and works of art that testify to the position and importance of the Venucci family in the (musical) history of Rijeka. Remo and Wilma were born in the early 20th Century. Their father Antal Wnoucsek first moved from Hungary to Pula and then to Rijeka where he married Maria Ana Rostand, a Rijeka native of Slovenian French origin with whom he had six children. In the interwar period the family changed their surname Wnoucsek to the Italian version Venucci. The Venucci children received their first music lessons from their father and all of them were musically gifted. Their family home was often a place inclined to art and culture, like a private music salon, and a meeting place of important artists from Rijeka in the 20th century such as Guido Smareglia or members of the Tyberg family. Although Remo was a very important and recognized engineer in Rijeka, he also left a significant mark in church music, given that he was an organist for more than 60 years in all major churches in Rijeka. Remo studied music privately with Anselmo Canjuga and Gastone de Zuccoli. His position as the organist of the church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Duomo) represents the continuity of Rijeka's organ tradition from the 19th century - from Venceslav Wenzel, through Ivan Zajc the Elder and then the Younger to Remo Venucci. In addition to the function of the Kapellmeister, he also repaired and electrified Rijeka's important organs, thus improving their technical aspects, which was not foreign to him as an engineer. He was involved in the purchase of the organ for the St Vitus' Cathedral and for the Salesians Church. Wilma Venucci was also the choirmaster and organist in various churches in Rijeka for about 30 years. Later she moved to Italy where she continued her music career. She studied music theory with Marcel Tyberg and then graduated in piano as a private student at the Jacopo Tomadini Conservatory in Udine. Wilma is even the composer of shorter church vocal works. While living in Rijeka, she worked as a pianist in the Società filarmonicodrammatica. Venucci, as an organizer of church music life, also collaborated with the Rijeka Opera Orchestra which, along with choirs, sometimes played during major ceremonies where they performed major musical works. The fact that the repertoire containing major works by European masters was performed in Rijeka shows that the level of performing excellence and amateur performance was very high, as well as demonstrating that the musical life of the city of Rijeka was generally quite distinguished in the 20th century. CITY dwellers , *QUALITY of life , *BOARDS of trade , *NINETEENTH century , *NONCITIZENS , *URBAN planning - Abstract
Rijeka/Fiume was one of the leading industrial cities in Europe in the 19th century. At that time, it developed both in the area of politics as well as economy and culture. For example, the well-known industrialist from England, Robert Whitehead, expanded his production and designed sketches for the first torpedo missiles. The first banks and chambers of commerce were founded in Rijeka. Charity balls were organised and libraries were equipped. Scientists (natural scientists), artists, industrial magnates, politicians took part in debates in order to plan the expansion of the city and to improve the quality of life of all citizens. A direct train connection from Vienna via Opatija (Abbazia) to Rijeka (Fiume), several direct oversea boat connections from Rijeka to America, New Zealand and Australia enabled the exploration of new worlds, other languages and the import of the like during the return of residents/sailors or upon the arrival of foreigners/migrants as new residents of the city. Rijeka/Fiume was and remains until today: a European transcultural and multilingual centre. For this reason, the present paper illustrates transculturality using well-known personalities of German-speaking origin in this city. This article is based on and complements previous research results of Ervin Dubrović, Gerhard Dienes and Irvin Lukežić. Aspects of multilingualism/translation as well as multiculturalism are in the foreground of this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PRESERVATION of palaces - Abstract
This paper focuses on the construction history and renovations of the Benzoni Palace located in Grivica Square in the Old Town of Rijeka. The three-storey building was designed by architect Antonio de Verneda and erected during the second quarter of the 18th century as a family palace of Giovanni Antonio Benzoni, bishop of Senj (1693-1745). The palace was renovated in the late 18th century, at the time when it was owned by the bishop's nephew, Giulio Benzoni (1732-1798), who was a city councillor. He had the front façade redesigned in the late-baroque classicist style, by adding a monumental stone portal, two balconies, and rich window decoration made in wrought iron. The palace underwent further adaptations during the second half of the 19
th century, when it was repurposed to serve as an orphanage, then as army barracks, and eventually as a rental apartment building. The 20th century saw several major interventions undertaken by its tenants, which to some extent degraded the palace's architecture. Based on the archival documentation, the authors present a proposal for the reconstruction of its original façade and the context of its design in the late 18th -century Rijeka. EUROPEAN Capital of Culture , *INTEGRITY , *CULTURE , *INSPIRATION , *CITIES & towns - Abstract
Searching for an answer whether medicine is a science or an art, especially in today's time when the emphasis is on the biotechnological aspects of treatment, the intention of this paper is to reflect on the outcomes of the encounter of medicine and art. Those that are recognised at least in the complementarity of the methodology, creating additional life values. By presenting authentic actions, this is a call for additional health improvement interventions, without allowing the biopsychosocial approach to human integrity to be forgotten. The inspiration for this view was the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture that the Town of Rijeka was awarded for the year 2020. This city is also a kind of capital of health culture in many ways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plague epidemics have remained in the collective consciousness until nowadays remembered as the deadliest. Therefore, it is not surprising that the answers to them throughout history have been not only medical but also religious. The previously mentioned will be analyzed in this paper through the cults of the protector saints against the plague epidemics that have developed in two Croatian cities of comparable size, Rijeka and Osijek, but with the diametrically opposed geographical positions and, accordingly, quite different historical developments. On the one hand, a more detailed overview of the development of the cults of various saints present in the mentioned cities will be presented. On the other hand, based on their presentation in the sacral heritage of these cities, the broader context of the time and space in which they have developed will be lightened. Particular attention will be paid to their medical connotations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HISTORY of medicine , *FOURTEENTH century , *NOBILITY (Social class) , *RELIGIOUS communities , *FIFTEENTH century - Abstract
The Order of St. Augustine (Ordo Eremitarum Sancti Augustini) was the first religious community in Rijeka. The monastery of St. Jerome, founded by the noble families of Devin and Walsee, existed from the 14th century till 1788, when it was dissolved by Joseph II. Unfortunately, the past of the Augustine Monastery of St. Jerome is mostly unknown. On the basis of largely unexplored sources in Croatia and overseas, the author reveals several facts about the relation between Rijeka's Augustinian community and medicine. The paper includes an important piece of information concerning the existence of a hospital on the location of Andrejšćica in Rijeka, founded in the 15th century, which has so far been unknown. Augustinian's sources (16th and 18th century) show the presence of several shaver-surgeon (barbitonsorius) and other various relevant topics for the history of medicine in Rijeka - pharmacopola, aromatarius etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUALITY of life , *NEIGHBORHOODS , *DECONSTRUCTION , *RESPONDENTS , *INFRASTRUCTURE (Economics) , *SATISFACTION - Abstract
The paper discusses the results of a quality-of-life research project in the City of Rijeka. The first part presents a deconstruction of the concept into domains and sub-domains that were chosen to represent the quality-of-life concept in this research. The second part is devoted to the analysis of the subjective quality-of-life experience of the inhabitants living in five chosen city neighbourhoods and the evaluation of the objective features of their immediate living space. The following neighbourhoods were chosen: Belveder/Brajda-Dolac, Pećine, Pehlin, Orehovica and Pašac. Results discussed in the paper show significant variations existing in the satisfaction with life domains between respondents living in those five neighbourhoods. According to the analysis, respondents from Belveder/Brajda-Dolac show the lowest average levels of satisfaction with three domains: transport and infrastructure, natural environment and neighbourhood safety. On the other hand, those respondents are significantly more satisfied with the accessibility of services and facilities than all the other respondents. Contrary to them are the respondents from two neighbourhoods on the outskirts of the city, namely Pašac and Orehovica, who are significantly more satisfied than all the other respondents with the domain of natural environment, but the least satisfied on average with the accessibility of services and facilities important for the everyday quality of life in the city. Domains and sub-domains that the respondents in different neighbourhoods are the least satisfied with represent those aspects that need special attention and work on the improvement of quality of life. SHIP cargo , *ECONOMIC indicators , *MARITIME shipping , *HARBORS - Abstract
The subject of this scientific work is to analyze the influence of the ship storage occupancy capacity variation on the optimal capacity as well as the considered economic indicators of a feeder ship. The results of the research have provided to a shipping company the possibility to take appropriate business moves in accordance with new or predicted business opportunities on a specific line aiming at improving the sea transport service efficiency. By using a model to determine the optimal capacity of a feeder ship, the paper aims at analyzing the influence of the change in the amount of cargo between the port of Rijeka, as a regional hub port, and the possible peripheral ports of Zadar, Sprit and Ploče on the optimal capacity of a feeder ship operating in the presumed feeder service At the same time, by using ditto model, a specific trend in the movement of economic indicator values (cost-effectiveness and economic justifiability) is determined for the previously defined optimal capacity on the considered route. Moreover, an analysis of the capacity changes due to the reduction in the cargo quantity and ship storage capacity ratio is carried out and presented in this paper by using the same model. This paper is a survey on the economic development of Rijeka city in the late 19th century with emphasis on the need for a plan aimed at the regulation of the city development. Until then the building code was the only means of regulating construction activities. After several competitions had failed, Paolo Grassi developed in 1904 the Regulation plan of the city. It came into force in 1910 and was in operation until the late 1930s. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SAILBOATS , *NAVAL history , *STATISTICS , *PAINTING - Abstract
By revealing the destiny of brick Romana the author is trying to point out the destinies of similar sailing vessels that navigated the seas in the middle of 19th century. The intention of this paper is also to throw some light on naval history of the town of Rijeka in the same period. To do so the case study method, descriptive, comparative, statistical and methods of analysis and synthesis were used. Special attention was dedicated to the votive painting and newspaper article -- fonts of historical knowledge with all their possibilities and limitations. It was established that newspaper article based on reliable source can contain many different information about things such as route, cargo, cargo management, consular service, causes and details of accident. But, while the newspaper information can considerably differ in quantitative and qualitative way, information from 19th century votive paintings are far more homogenous because of their standardized structure. They, besides accident details (when, where, how), are always the evidence of the ship's origin and appearance, captain, bad weather navigation, language, as well as the votive practice and the appearance of ex voto. QUALITY of service , *HARBORS , *MATHEMATICAL variables , *MULTIVARIATE analysis - Abstract
The port service quality research methods from the users' point of view are presented in this paper. The purpose of this research is to select and reduce a large number of the port service quality attributes to a smaller number of attributes, grouped in common factors according to certain criteria. By analyzing the structure of the grouped attributes, the users' expectation of the service quality provided according to their requirements is determined and evaluated. The determination of interdependence among more variables has been carried out by using the multivariate analysis or, specifically, by using the method of the principal component factor analysis. The presented methodology has been applied to the real data obtained from the questionnaire of the sample of students attending the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka, Croatia. The data collected have been processed by using the SPSS 16.0. statistical package. Based on the factor matrix and after having carried out the Oblimin rotation, it has been determined that five latent groups of attributes grouped in factors have been indicated by the attributes. Five factors singled out considering the associated port service quality attributes have been called: the port functionality factor, the port responsibility factor, the port adaptability factor, the port availability factor and the port information capacity factor. DEMOGRAPHIC surveys , *POPULATION forecasting , *WORLD War II , *EMIGRATION & immigration , *URBAN growth , *METROPOLITAN areas , *EMPIRICAL research - Abstract
In the last inter-census period, between 1991 and 2001, Rijeka recorded population decrease for the first time after World War II as the result of negative natural movement and negative net migration. At the same time the number of inhabitants in the suburban region increased owing exactly to in-migration. Besides migration characteristics analysis of the population of the city and its suburban region based on the data of previous censuses, especially on that in 2001, basic results of the empirical research conducted in 2006 by the way of questionnaire method on the sample of 411 respondents in four settlements in the Rijeka suburban region are presented in the paper. The analysis of respondents' replies to four questions regarding reasons for out-migration from their previous place of residence and settling in the Rijeka suburban region settlements points to solving housing problem as the main push factor of out-migration and main pull factor of in-migration to suburbs.
