Objective. The aim of this paper is to critically review the content and outcomes of education for library reference work at the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek) and compare them with the competency matrix for library reference described in the publications of the American Library Association. Approach/Methodology/Design. An analysis of the current study program was conducted to identify all courses that off er competencies and skills necessary for work in the information and reference servic. These were then compared with existing guidelines and competencies for library reference work. Results. Department of Information Science, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek) off ers courses that cover the necessary competencies for library reference work. Limitations. The conclusions are based on a comparison of the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek) study program with publications of the American Library Association. Many educators and practitioners use those publications but they do not necessarily refl ect the Croatian experience of library reference work.....Originality/Value. The paper presents an analysis of the university study program at the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek) in terms of competencies required for library reference work in the reference service, which has not been conducted before. Cilj je rada opisati i kritički valorizirati primjenu metode citatne analize u vrednovanju fonda visokoškolske knjižnice te predstaviti i analizirati rezultate istraživanja provedenog tom metodom na zbirci građe iz informacijskih znanosti u Knjižnici Filozofskoga fakulteta u Osijeku. Na temelju brojnih studija, provedenih prvenstveno u stranim visokoškolskim knjižnicama, pokazalo se da je metoda citatne analize, unatoč prepoznatim nedostacima koji su joj inherentni kao i svakoj pojedinoj metodi, valjana metoda za prikupljanje pokazatelja o stvarnom korištenju (knjižničnim) informacijskim izvorima. Provedenim se istraživanjem željelo ispitati praksu citiranja nastavnika i studenata, utvrditi obilježja građe kojom su se koristili pri izradi svojih radova i saznati u kojoj je mjeri korištena građa dostupna u njihovoj matičnoj knjižnici. Za provedeno je istraživanje, čija je namjera, pored ostalog, bila i testirati metodu citatne analize u kontekstu vrednovanja knjižničnog fonda, odabran uzorak publikacija koji su činili svi diplomski radovi studenata i svi radovi nastavnika na Odsjeku za informacijske znanosti (monografije, članci, disertacije), a koji su objavljeni tijekom 2010. godine. Analizom dobivenih podataka, među ostalim, utvrđeno je da su se studenti u svojim radovima obuhvaćenim ovim istraživanjem više služili elektroničkim, a nastavnici tiskanim izvorima. Nadalje, pokazalo se da su se autori analiziranih radova najčešće koristili serijskim i monografskim publikacijama, iako kod studentske populacije najznačajniji dio korištenih izvora otpada na mrežnu građu poput prezentacija i tekstova na komercijalnim i edukativnim mrežnim stranicama. Što se pak tiče dostupnosti građe, dobiveni podaci pokazuju da su autori u svojoj matičnoj knjižnici mogli pristupiti značajnom broju serijskih publikacija (60%) te znatno manjem broju monografskih publikacija (oko 25%). Kako bi se ograničenja navedene kvantitativne metode svela na najmanju moguću mjeru te kako bi se dobili što pouzdaniji pokazatelji o obrascima citiranja i korištenja informacijskih izvora (i knjižnice) u određenom znanstvenom području (u ovom slučaju informacijskih i komunikacijskih znanosti), ali i kako bi se mogli identificirati i pratiti trendovi informacijskog ponašanja autora analiziranih radova (nastavnika i studenata), potrebno je istraživanja ovog tipa provoditi redovito kroz duži niz godina i nadopuniti ih kvalitativnom studijom., The aim of this paper is to describe and critically analyse the application of citation analysis in the collection evaluation in academic libraries, and to present the results of the study. The study, first of its kind in Croatia, was carried out in the information sciences collection at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Osijek. Based on many studies from abroad done in the academic environment, the citation analysis, despite its disadvantages, proved to be a valid method for the collection of indicators of real use of (library) information sources. The study analysed citation patterns, characteristics of information sources used by respondents and the accessibility of these sources in the academic library. Its aim was also to test the method of citation analysis in the context of library collection evaluation. The samples used in this study were papers published in 2010 by the students and teachers of the Department of Information Sciences in Osijek. The data analysis showed that while students preferred electronic information sources, teachers preferred print sources. Also, periodicals and monographs were top two information types used in the compilation of studied publications. However, students used undefined type of web resources such as presentations and commercial and educational websites to a great extent. As far as accessibility of sources used is concerned, the results show that library offers access to 60% of periodicals used and approximately 25% of monographs. In order to minimize the limitations of this quantitative method and to obtain valid and reliable indicators of citation patterns and use of (library) information sources by students and teachers at the given Department, this study should be carried out longitudinally. It should also be complemented with a qualitative study (e.g. interview with teachers and students).

The gradual process in which the medieval commune of Dubrovnik developed into a classical city-state in the first half of the 16th century was related both to the outer and to the inner elements. Among the latter the most important role belonged to the establishment of a firm, reliable and well organised web of clerks. Since their work would have been impossible without a continuous supply of paper and parchment, the Government signed several contracts with various entrepreneurs who were undertaken to fulfil all such needs, including also the book binding. The primary sources always describe them simply as librarii. They were coming from various backgrounds, including native people and Italians, priests and laity, nobles and commoners. Although they had never formed a proper corporation, their profession enjoyed a particular status due to a relatively small, but regular income, their mutual connections (including education of apprentices) and particular professional knowledge they had, especially that of making parchment. The first decades of the 16th century witnessed to a severe restriction imposed to all civil servants, but since 1540s sources are particularly abundant with news concerning the parchment and paper supply. Therefore we traced the roots of paper from Venice and Ancona to Dubrovnik and, occasionally, to the Ottoman Empire afterwards. We are precisely informed about the prices, careers of several librarii who worked in a span of several decades and their mutual relations. Also, as there were various kinds of paper being supplied to the State offices, it is easily possible to perceive their value. Towards the end of the Republic the flourishing days gradually disappeared and 1790s brought just a single request from a local priest to learn the service of bookbinding in Rome. However, thousands of books kept today in the State Archives of Dubrovnik undoubtedly testify about the quality of the late librarii and their work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There are many proved advantages and benefits of Free/Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS): better security and reliability, avoiding lock in effect, control over handling sensitive data etc. That is a reason why EU tries to encourage the FLOSS usage in its administration and FLOSS has become very popular in public sector of EU countries in the last fifteen years. Despite that FLOSS usage in South East Europe is almost nonexistent. The focus of this paper is put on the FLOSS usage in the public administration of Bosnia and Herzegovina and on the FLOSS presence compared to proprietary software in the information system of cities and municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Furthermore, the paper also presents a guideline for possible migration to FLOSS and discusses the major benefits of adopting FLOSS products within the Bosnia and Herzegovina public administration.

Goal. The goal of the research presented in this paper was to analyse to what degree the LIS programmes prepare students for the future work in libraries. Furthermore, to what degree do the LIS programmes ensure the necessary competences from the perspective of the LIS alumni. These are also the two research questions, and the main hypothesis examins whether the respondents perceive the acquired competencies as adequate for their everyday work. Methodology. The research was conducted by an online survey. The questionnaire was divided into several groups of questions: demographics, motivation for enrolment, perception of the acquired competences, alumni network, practical training, membership and activity in library associations. The questionnaire was distributed through the alumni network and personal contacts. Results. The research results show that the overall perception of the acquired competences through the Croatian LIS studies is relatively low. Some of the elements like practical training are marked negatively which indicates low satisfaction with certain aspects of the LIS programmes. On the other hand, the enrolment motivation is generally positively assessed, meaning that the respondents had enrolled into the programmes in the field they wanted to pursue jobs in the future. The job satisfaction is also assessed as relatively high. Limitations. The results show possible discrepancies between the expected learning outcomes and competences and the students' perception of the acquired competences. It must be mentioned that the research questions did not include the respondents expectations aspect. Also, the students' accomplishments during the studies had not been taken into account, and that could be one of the factors that generated the discrepancies. Originality. The research results point to potential problems in certain segments of the existing LIS programmes in Croatia, and they could help in elimination or dealing with these problems. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explore a developmental path of the students who graduate in information sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science sin Osijek and get employed by IT companies, in order to determine the relevance of the knowledge and skills taught at the DDS IT (Double Major Graduate IT Programme) defined through the learning outcomes of the study programme, and to establish the level of satisfaction with the working conditions and development opportunities at their current workplaces. In order to achieve these goals, the analysis of knowledge and skills defined through learning outcomes at the DDS IT will be given first. It will be followed with the interviews with graduate students who, after completing their studies, started their business careers in IT companies. Their development path will be analyzed and the conclusions about key performance indicators in IT companies after graduation will be presented. Methodology: Analysis of the content of the Double Major Graduate Programme in information technologies in the context of compulsory learning outcomes, the titles of the elective courses and the area of project work. Furthermore, a semi-structured interview with graduate IT science students working in IT companies will be presented. Findings: The respondents' answers can be summed up as successful stories of young people who find their fortune in the field of information technology. Even though transcripts do not formally show it, the respondents are very affectionate towards what they are doing, their dedication to their work is evident, and also their desire for continuous education and their true interest in the IT area can be seen. Originality: A successful developmental path for all future students, both in information technology and in other areas of information science, is defined by the stated characteristics of the persons mentioned in the results. New generations should learn from the respondents' cases and embrace the approach and experience of their predecessors and following their example define their own (successful) development path as graduate IT science students employed by IT companies. The aim of the paper is to analyze and to present the most frequent conceptual mechanisms in observing and describing scientific phenomena which allow a successful and efficient exchange of information on the level of communication between the scientific community and the “audience”, and also on the level of communication within the scientific community itself, within the field of information science. Application of conceptual mechanisms in the language of information science is presented through the examples of often, almost daily used terms, such as database, gadget race, information architecture, intellectual property, print revolution, computer virus, artificial life, etc. The observing and describing of these terms has been followed, both in popular discourse (such as on various web pages), as well as in available scientific and professional literature. The work is comprised of four parts. After the basic introductory part on the language of scientific communication, follows the presentation of the conceptual metaphor theory, conceptual integration theory and scientific model. Each conceptual mechanism is followed by the analysis of specific examples from the language of the information science. Taking into consideration that the area of information science is under a constant influence of technological changes and development of modern information – communication technology, new and different phenomena are often observed, and they require a new thinking framework in the process of observation, as well as the new ways of language articulation during the process of their description and communication to the scientific and non – scientific audience. The fundamental contribution of the paper is the display and analysis of few examples of the observed new thought patterns and new ways of language articulation in popular and scientific discourse of the information science language.

In a way, this text continues two of my previously published text and a lecture on Open Access (OA) to published scientific information. OA is a world wide initiative for the maximal access to scientific information, in a digital form, be it as digital OA journals („golden way"), or as digital OA self-archived documents („green way"). In this article, after a brief summary of some basic principles of the concept of OA, a short account of the most important global developments regarding the OA initiative during the years 2005 and 2006. Everything indicates that OA is ever more widespread and that there is an increasing number of institutions and foundations adhering to it. However, the initiative still requires more promotion among scientists. OA's appeal to individual scientists should lie in the fact that OA increases the visibility of newly published information, and its impact on scientific research. Of course, this also contributes to the reputation of scientists publishing noteworthy papers. On the global scene, OA could bridge the gap between affluent and less affluent scientific communities, at least in the field of sharing published information. The reduced profit of scientific publishers is, and may for some time be, the main obstacle for further advancement of the OA approach. However, there are encouraging signs that some of the more progressive publishers are trying to adapt to the new situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to demonstrate that establishing a single discipline is of primary importance for further development of quantitative research into processes of generation, communication, and usage of scientific and other substantive information, known in the literature as bibliometric, scientometric and informetric studies. Establishing a single discipline is primarily required (1) to define and formalize the nature and boundaries of a discipline that will enable development in a consistent way, as well as (2) to facilitate knowledge systematization and standardization of terminology. The first part of the article gives a critical presentation of the current situation and the reasons behind it. Vjesnik bibliotekara Hrvatske has been published since 1950 by the Croatian Library Association, bringing information on the newest achievements in librarianship in Croatia and worldwide. Due to the fact that it publishes only reviewed and categorized papers, the journal has been affirmed as the only relevant scientific and professional journal in the area of Croatian librarianship. It is referred in three databases: LISA: Library and information Science Abstracts, ISA: information Science Abstracts and Sciences de l'Information, Documentation. Thus, the published articles are important elements for evaluation of Croatian librarians' scientific and professional contributions, as well as for acquiring professional and scientific titles. Besides that, special issues edited by eminent professionals in a certain area, serve as mandatory exam literature for graduate and postgraduate students of the Department of Information Science, Faculty of Philosophy Zagreb, and of the Department of Librarianship, Faculty of Philosophy Osijek. Since March 9, 2004 Vjesnik bibliotekara Hrvatske has started publishing its parallel electronic edition free of charge (http:// www.hkdrustvo.hr/vbh/), thus giving its articles more visibility and making them more available to potential readers. The article will examine the chances of peripheral journals from a small scientific community to be included into journal elite of international significance on the case of Vjesnik bibliotekara Hrvatske. The following issues will be discussed: -- the role of nationally oriented journals, e.g., in the protection of communication in the language of a small scientific community, as well as the impact of the local scientific and professional environment on the characteristics of scientific communication, e.g., source items etc.; and -- the need of inclusion of nationally oriented journals into the mainstream of the world scientific communication and international databases in order to fulfil ambitions of scientists and professionals from small, scientific peripheral environment to publish the results of their research in journals which impact allows better visibility in and response from the international scientific and/or professional community. The aim of this research was to determine whether the information flows correlate with journal inclusion in the ISI databases. The sample contained 12 Croatian journals covered by Institute for Scientific Information on the basis of Journal Citation Reports (JCR) Science Edition and Social Sciences Edition for the year 2001. Two journal sets were selected to test for correlation: cited journals and citing journals. The sets were compared. Studied were the interrelations, mutual overlaps and citations. Scientific categories were based on JCR. The goal of the paper was to study the main characteristics of the process of Croatian scientific communication on a sample of domestic journals covered by ISI databases and not the evaluation of the process of their selection for the inclusion into ISI database. U ovom završnom radu nastoji se objasniti i dati prikaz osnova, pojave, razvoja i teorija informacijske znanosti, od samih početaka pa do danas. Najprije se govori o širem društvenom i kulturnom kontekstu unutar kojeg se javljaju informacijske znanosti, od nastanka jezika pa do modernog doba u kojemu danas živimo, kao i o pretečama informacijske znanosti u drugim disciplinama koje se bave prikupljanjem, obradom, pohranjivanjem, prijenosom i diseminacijom informacija. Zatim, iznose se neke definicije informacijskih znanosti i njihov predmet i područje. Usporedba informacijske tehnologije sa informacijskim znanostima te kako je informacijska tehnologija utjecala na razvoj informacijskih znanosti sredinom 20. stoljeća. Pobliže se razmatraju pojmovi i fenomeni važni za informacijsku znanost: informacija, njezine definicije i teorije; znanje; podatak; te relevantnost. Nakon sustavnog pregleda, u radu se opisuje i hrvatski kontekst, tj. pojava i razvoj informacijskih znanosti u Hrvatskoj te osnivanje studija i studijskih programa. Posebno se ističe prof. dr. Božo Težak kao osnivač informacijskih znanosti, ne samo u hrvatskom (tadašnjem jugoslavenskom), nego i u svjetskom planu. Na kraju samog rada se govori o studiju informacijskih i komunikacijskih znanosti na Filozofskom fakultetu Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, njegovom nastanku i osnivaču profesoru Bulcsú Lászlu. The aim of this bachelor's paper is to explain and give an outline of the basics, emergence, development and theories of information science, from its very beginings to today. First, the broader social and cultural context in which information science emerged is studied, from the appearance of language to the modern age we live in, as well as the predecessors of information science in other disciplines dealing with collection, processing, storing, transmitting and dissemination of information. Secondly, a number of definitions of information sciences, their subject and area of study are dealt with. The next part compares information technologies to information sciences and explains how information technologies affected the development of information sciences mid-20th-century. Terms and phenomena important to information science are studied closely: information, its definitions and theories; knowledge; data; and relevance. After a systemic overview, the paper delves into the Croatian context; the emergence and development of information sciences in Croatia, as well as the founding of the studies and study programs. The most prominent figure studied is dr. Božo Težak, as a founder of information sciences, not only in Croatian (Yugoslavian at the time) level, but the world-wide one just as well. The end of the paper touches on the study of information and communication sciences at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Zagreb, its origin and the founder, professor Bulcsú László.

Završni rad opisuje pojavu nove discipline pod nazivom "socijalna epistemologija". Nakon početne terminološke i teoretske konstrukcije paradigme, brojni filozofi ponudili su svoja vlastita viđenja na temu sveopće filozofije znanja i ljudskog kreiranja te interpretacije tog istog znanja. Ovaj rad ukratko predstavlja filozofska razmišljanja američkog filozofa i fizičara Thomasa Kuhna, austrijsko-britanskog profesora i filozofa Karla Poppera te većinskim dijelom teorijske postavke značajnog američkog teoretičara knjižničarstva, Jessea Shere. Ponajveći dio rada nastoji naglasiti sponu između socijalne epistemologije i informacijske znanosti sa specifičnim naglaskom na poveznicu između socijalne epistemologije i knjižničarstva. This final paper describes the emergence of a new discipline called "Social Epistemology". After the initial terminological and theoretical construction of the paradigm, numerous philosophers offered their own views on the subject of the general philosophy of knowledge and human creation and interpretation of the same knowledge. This work briefly represents the philosophical thinking of the American philosopher and physicist Thomas Kuhn, the Austrian-British professor and philosopher Karl Popper, and most of the paper is concerned with theoretical setting of a significant US theoretician of librarianship, Jesse Shera. Most of the work seeks to emphasize the link between social epistemology and librarianship.

Slijedom promjena u području sveučilišnog obrazovanja i niza novih zadaća suvremenih informacijskih ustanova u ovom se radu promišljaju mogući iskoraci prema sustavnom sveučilišnom obrazovanju i stalnom stručnom usavršavanju informacijskih stručnjaka. Neosporno je da je moguće uspoređivati i pronalaziti zajedničke karakteristike obrazovnih programa u području informacijske znanosti, bibliotečne znanosti, bibliotečne i informacijske znanost te programa koje nude tzv. i-schools. Uz to niz je novih ponuditelja obrazovnih programa za upravljanje ogromnim količinama podataka, ekonomiju informacija, digitalne biblioteke, i drugih u kojima sadržaji iz bibliotekarstva (na primjer, organizacija informacija, pretraživanje informacija, informacijsko ponašanje, informacijska pismenost) mogu imati bitno značajniju ulogu. Cilj rada je ukazati na trendove u europskom sveučilišnom prostoru s aspekta obrazovanja bibliotekara i drugih informacijskih stručnjaka te potaknuti na iznalaženje optimalnih rješenja unutar lokalnih, bosansko-hercegovačkih okolnosti. Namjera nam je ukazati na potrebu sustavnog promišljanja i djelovanja koje bi uvažavalo tradicionalno shvaćene kompetencije i kritički sagledalo nove mogućnosti s ciljem osmišljavanja atraktivnih i održivih sveučilišnih programa i programa kojima se stečene kompetencije nadograđuju novima. Ti programi trebaju biti dovoljno fleksibilni da odgovore na potrebe novih izazova poput, na primjer, upravljanja novom Univerzitetskom bibliotekom. Temeljem iskustva iz nedavno završenog Erasmus + projekta EINFOSE, nastojimo izdvojiti ključna pitanja za buduće rasprave i odluke., Following changes in the field of the university education and a series of new tasks for modern information institutions this paper considers possible steps towards a systematic university education and continuous professional development of information professionals. It is indisputable that it is possible to compare and find common characteristics of educational programs in the fields of information science, library science, library and information science, and programs offered by the so-called i-schools. In addition, there are a number of new providers of education programs in, for example, information economics, digital libraries, big data management, where content in librarianship (such as information organization, information retrieval, information behaviour, information literacy) can play a significantly more important role. The aim of the paper is to highlight the trends in the European university area from the perspective of educating librarians and other information professionals, and to encourage educators to find optimal solutions within local circumstances (such as Bosnian and Herzegovinian). We intend to point out the need for systematic reflection and action that would respect traditionally understood competencies and critically look at new opportunities with the aim of designing attractive and sustainable university programs and programs that upgrade the acquired competencies with new ones. These programs should be flexible enough to respond to the needs of new challenges such as managing a new University Library in Sarajevo. Based on the experience of the recently completed Erasmus + EINFOSE project, we aim to single out key issues for future discussions and decisions.

Cilj je rada istražiti i predstaviti najčešće konceptualizacijske mehanizme u opažanju i opisivanju znanstvenih fenomena koji omogućuju uspješnu i učinkovitu razmjenu informacija na razini komunikacije između znanstvene zajednice i 'publike', ali i na razini komunikacije unutar same znanstvene zajednice u području informacijskih znanosti. Primjena konceptualizacijskih mehanizama u jeziku informacijskih znanosti predstavljena je na čestim, gotovo svakodnevno korištenim pojmovima, kao što su baza podataka, gadget-utrka, informacijska arhitektura, intelektualno vlasništvo, revolucija tiska, računalni virus, umjetni život i sl. Praćeno je opažanje i opisivanje takvih pojmova kako u popularnom diskursu (primjerice na različitim mrežnim stranicama) tako i u dostupnoj znanstvenoj i stručnoj literaturi. Rad se sastoji od četiri dijela. Nakon općenitog uvodnog dijela o jeziku znanstvene komunikacije, redom se predstavljaju teorija konceptualne metafore, teorija konceptualne integracije i znanstveni model. Svaki je konceptualizacijski mehanizam popraćen analizom konkretnih primjera iz jezika informacijskih znanosti. Budući da je područje informacijskih znanosti pod stalnim utjecajem tehnoloških promjena i razvoja suvremene informacijsko-komunikacijske tehnologije, često se uočavaju novi i različiti fenomeni koji traže novi misaoni okvir u procesu opažanja te nove načine jezične artikulacije u procesu njihova opisivanja i komuniciranja znanstvenoj i neznanstvenoj publici. Temeljni je doprinos rada upravo prikaz i analiza nekolicine primjera uočenih novih misaonih okvira i novih načina jezične artikulacije u popularnom i znanstvenom diskursu jezika informacijske znanosti., The aim of the paper is to analyze and to present the most frequent conceptual mechanisms in observing and describing scientific phenomena which allow a successful and efficient exchange of information on the level of communication between the scientific community and the “audience”, and also on the level of communication within the scientific community itself, within the field of information science. Application of conceptual mechanisms in the language of information science is presented through the examples of often, almost daily used terms, such as database, gadget race, information architecture, intellectual property, print revolution, computer virus, artificial life, etc. The observing and describing of these terms has been followed, both in popular discourse (such as on various web pages), as well as in available scientific and professional literature. The work is comprised of four parts. After the basic introductory part on the language of scientific communication, follows the presentation of the conceptual metaphor theory, conceptual integration theory and scientific model. Each conceptual mechanism is followed by the analysis of specific examples from the language of the information science. Taking into consideration that the area of information science is under a constant influence of technological changes and development of modern information – communication technology, new and different phenomena are often observed, and they require a new thinking framework in the process of observation, as well as the new ways of language articulation during the process of their description and communication to the scientific and non – scientific audience. The fundamental contribution of the paper is the display and analysis of few examples of the observed new thought patterns and new ways of language articulation in popular and scientific discourse of the information science language.

21. SCIENTOMETRIC ASSESSMENT OF PUBLISHING PATTERNS AND PERFORMANCE INDICATORS IN AGRICULTURE IN THE JCEA MEMBER COUNTRIES

The study assessed selected characteristics of documents published in national journals and other publications in the countries which participate on the editorial board of an international journal JCEA (Journal of Central European Agriculture). Bibliographic citations from the CAB Abstracts database were employed. Search syntax along with some cataloging characteristics of the database was addressed. In total more than 89.000 agriculture-related documents were identified in the period 2000-2008 with journal articles predominating, followed by proceedings (conference papers). The two document types can overlap. English plays a role of the principal language, accounting for more than half of all records (48.000). Poland is the major contributor of documents, being by far the largest country. Croatian publications show the highest level of international participation in domestic publications, whereas the Slovenian authors shows the highest level of publishing in non-domestic publications. Altogether some 378 different agricultural and related life- and environmental sciences journals have been active in the region in this period. The results can serve as an indicator of regional publishing activities and behavior of authors.

Ovim se radom nastoji pokazati da je za daljni razvoj područja koje se bavi kvantitativnim istraživanjima procesa stvaranja, prijenosa i korištenja znanstvenih i drugih ključnih informacija, poznatim u literaturi kao bibliometrijska, scientometrijska i informetrijska istraživanja, od primarnog značenja uspostava jedinstvene discipline kojom bi se: 1. definirala i formalizirala priroda i granice discipline te osigurao njen razvoj na konzistentan način, i 2. olakšalo sređivanje stečenog znanja i standardizacija terminologije. U prvom dijelu rada dat je kritički osvrt na postojeće stanje i navedeni su razlozi koji su do toga doveli. U drugom dijelu razmatra se koncept informetrije kao zajedničke discipline., This paper aims to demonstrate that establishing a single discipline is of primary importance for further development of quantitative research into processes of generation, communication, and usage of scientific and other substantive information, known in the literature as bibliometric, scientometric and informetric studies. Establishing a single discipline is primarily required (1) to define and formalize the nature and boundaries of a discipline that will enable development in a consistent way, as well as (2) to facilitate knowledge systematization and standardization of terminology. The first part of the article gives a critical presentation of the current situation and the reasons behind it. The second part presents and discusses the concept of informetrics as a common integrative discipline.
