COMMUNICATIVE competence , *ACADEMIC libraries , *ERROR analysis in mathematics , *QUALITATIVE research - Abstract
Communication skills belong to the fundamental skills for librarians, especially those who work in user departments. But, the question is how successful are we really in communication with our users? Do we manage to communicate our message to them, and if we do, to what degree? This paper presents the findings of the research conducted at the City and University Library in Osijek. The research was qualitative in nature, and conducted on two focus groups in order to gather the necessary data. One group consisted of the librarians, and the other of the users of the City and University Library in Osijek. Through the analysis of real-life situations, the research focused on communication errors and problems, but has also shown the examples of positive practice in the librarian-user everyday interactions. The paper offers suggestions for improvement of librarian communication skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HIGH school graduates , *EMPIRICAL research , *SOCIAL status - Abstract
This paper analyses premigratory disposition among high school graduates in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, and Osijek based on results of empirical research carried out in 2014. A representative sample of 1,830 students (844 male and 986 female) was made by using a probabilistic two-step cluster sampling model, stratified by the type of school and the city where the school is located. The data were processed using the statistical analytical program SPSS 20. The average age of respondents was 18.85, 54.6% attended vocational schools and 45.4% attended gymnasia. The research showed that almost half of the students intended to leave Croatia to continue their education or seek employment. A statistically significant difference was determined according to gender, type of school attended, and city of residence. Furthermore, a correlation between socioeconomic status, family completeness, and religiosity, among students with a lower premigratory disposition, was also determined. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ACADEMIC libraries , *BOOK collecting , *CULTURAL property , *GROUP identity - Abstract
The memorial book collection of the City and University Library in Osijek is a special collection within the library holdings which comprises materials published before 1945. The collection is divided into several subcollections: books published before 1945, the rare book collection, the Divaldiana, and the legacy collections (Hengl, Sonnenfeld, Pollak, Magjer, Rakoš, Pinterovic, Kocijan, Gottschalk). This paper presents briely the various collections and their cultural and historical values important for the local community. The memorial book collection with its completely or partially catalogued resources is available to the public. It is necessary to expertly catalog and process the collection and all its subccollections, present the collection's structure (topics, languages, publication types), and single out old and particularly valuable books. The goal is to preserve the integrity and particularity of the subcollections. In order to provide greater public access to cultural heritage resources, the project of digitization the memorial collection was started, with a particular emphasis on the local monographies and periodicals, as well as graphic maps with local themes. Cataloging, protection, conservation and presentation of memorial collections are necessary in order to preserve them as part of the cultural and social identity and heritage. Thus the library has a signiicant role in contributing to the preservation of the memorial and cultural heritage of Osijek and Slavonia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CORRIDORS , *AGGLOMERATION (Materials) , *ECONOMIC structure , *INDUSTRIAL clusters , *RURAL development - Abstract
Three pan-European transport corridors pass through the Osijek region. Corridor X goes in the Salzburg-Ljubljana-Zagreb-Belgrade-Skopje-Salonika direction. Corridor Vc (a branch of the corridor V) connects Budapest, Osijek, Sarajevo and Ploče. Corridor VII is represented by the River Danube. Starting from the fact that the transport corridors play a prominent role in connecting places and stimulating development, this paper firstly deals with the stage of their valorisation in the framework of the Osijek region and wider. It analyses the condition of the communications and terminals on the corridor routes and, accordingly, organisation of the connections and development trends of the transport courses. After 15 years of existence the corridors are unevenly and insufficiently valorised. In spite of that, their effects are significant. The corridors have raised the importance of Osijek as a multimodal junction and polarization centre. They have also influenced the spatio-functional development of the Osijek urban agglomeration. The other four centres in the corridors - Vinkovci, Vukovar, Đakovo and Županja - have reinforced their transport and central functions and, together with central Osijek, have become the framework of the region's development. STUDENT rights , *HIGHER education , *QUALITY control - Abstract
The institute of Students' Attorney is a new notion introduced for the students' population of the Republic of Croatia and it is based on the Law on Students' Assembly and other Students' Organisations (NN 71/07; furtheron ZSZ). Since the institute of Students' Attorney was introduced at the Faculty of Law in Osijek in July 2008 the first survey of the level of students' rights respect has been done and it will be continued in the course of the years to come. The survey of students' rights respect is part of the university education quality control system. One of the main aims of this research project is promotion of students' rights for the purpose of long-term study quality control. According to Gryn and Juran: «Quality management is a process that recognizes and manages activities necessary for achieving the quality goals of an organisation» and one of the basic indicators of university institution quality is for sure the level of students' rights respect. The survey at the Faculty of Law in Osijek was done by a paper-pencil method sampling 246 respondents. The research included students of all study years. The results indicate a worrying data: almost 44% of the respondents consider their rights to be often violated. Only 1 respondent considers that students' rights are fully respected at the Faculty of Law in Osijek. However, this should be observed in a wider context of the information that only 13% of the students in the survey think that they are informed about the majority of students' rights. It should be noted that the awareness of students' rights violation presumes the knowledge of these rights a whole. Otherwise it can be confused with the feeling of personal (dis)content or (in)justice at the faculty subject to survey. Therefore, the first survey has shown that it is necessary to educate students about their rights but it also indicates the need for quality improvement, i.e. greater respect of students' rights. The survey has also shown that the institute of Students' Attorney has not started operating completely (in spite of the rights violation perception only 12% of the respondents set out the concrete problem before the students' attorney) but it has a great potential for future development (e.g. almost 1/3 of the respondents think that the relationship between students and professors is exceptionally bad or bad). This paper analyses variability of precipitation in Osijek in three periods of thirty years, starting from the year 1901 till 1990. In period from 1931 till 1990 primary maximum of precipitation was in summer (June), and secondary maximum was in autumn (November). Primary minimum of precipitation was at the end of winter (March), and secondary minimum was in autumn (September). In researched period total amount of precipitation decreased, same as average relative variability. Largest decrease was in autumn (October). Average relative variability in researched period has also decreased. Minimum of variability was in June, a month with maximum precipitation and maximum of variability was in October, although the minimum of precipitation was in March. One of the reasons for maximum variability in October is a significant decrease of precipitation amount in that month. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
