Haji Khalifa (Katib Çelebi) ,cartography ,Bosnian eyalet ,17th century ,Geography (General) ,G1-922 - Abstract
The paper presents an Ottoman map, which in one part shows in more detail the area of the Bosnian eyalet with its surroundings, i.e. parts of the area of early modern Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its author is Haji Khalifa or Katib Çelebi, an Ottoman historian and bibliographer from the mid-17th century. The map is in the autograph of the first version of his work Cosmography (Cihânnümâ) from 1648, preserved in the Austrian National Library in Vienna. The aim of the paper was to establish how the mentioned geographical area was observed by the Ottoman cartographer, what is the possible reason for the creation of the map and what were the sources of information contained in it. As the map was made during the Candian War, after the fall of Klis into Venetian hands in 1648, it is possible that the author himself made the map with the aim of visualizing the Ottoman border in the Dalmatian hinterland and explaining its significance in the Ottoman centre. Solid precision in positioning and listing local toponyms, the direction of providing road communications as well as the content of marginal notes on the map, indicate that the author probably consulted someone familiar with local circumstances.

confraternity of leather-workers ,confraternity of st. anthony the abbot ,church of the holy savior ,church of st. anthony the abbot ,zadar ,17th century ,History (General) ,D1-2009 - Abstract
Based on the original documents from the State Archives in Zadar and reports of apostolic visitors for Dalmatia from the 16th and 17th centuries, this paper analyzes the joining of Confraternity of Leather-Workers and Confraternity of St. Anthony the Abbot to the Church of the Holy Savior (subsequently renamed the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot) in Zadar: the documents analyzed indicate that the Confraternity of Leather-Workers moved to the Church of the Holy Savior earlier than the Zadar-based historian Carlo Federico Bianchi contends and that it certainly flourished under the auspices of this church earlier than the Confraternity of St. Anthony the Abbot. Contrary to Bianchi’s claims, this paper will prove that Confraternity of St. Anthony the Abbot joined the Church of the Holy Savior later than Confraternity of Leather-Workers and that the church was renamed the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot not earlier than in the 17th century. And finally, the paper will show that the interrelations and rights of the two confraternities at the Church of St. Anthony the Abbot were regulated by the Archbishop of Zadar and the apostolic visitor and reformer of Dalmatia, Ottaviano Garzadori.

17th-century Border Dispute Between Lovran and Mošćenice. Today, the Cesara inlet is the border area between the Municipality of Lovran and the Municipality of Mošćenička Draga, i.e. between their two border cadastral municipalities: Visoče and Kraj. Thanks to its position, it is also the historical natural geographical boundary between Lovran and Mošćenice communes and parishes. Historical sources from the 18th century provide accounts of the disputes of these two neighbouring municipalities about the demarcation of the fishing area. This paper presents in detail a contemporary reading (transcription and translation) of a 17th-century source text written in Italian that describes a physical conflict that emerged at that border area. The transcript in question is of a document dated January 16, 1646 made by Kastav Notary Public Ioannes Conradus Hauch.

testament ,17th century ,Croatian glagolitic notariat ,Zlarin ,Roman legal tradition - Abstract
Također, rad ujedno prikazuje šarolikost društvenog života i imovinskog stanja tadašnjih ostavitelja općenito., Inheritance by testament is, in addition to intestate succession, one of the two possible ways of inheritance where the testator's freedom to dispose of his own property is fully manifested. This concept, stemming from Roman legal tradition, exists nowadays in the contemporary Croatian Act on Inheritance, which regulates matters of inheritance. Testament is thus a formal, unilateral and revocable legal act mortis causa, i.e. it represents testaror’s distribution of his property effective on the moment of his death. This refers to modern testamentary law, which is largely based on the Roman legal tradition. This text analyses testaments from the island of Zlarin (near the city of Šibenik, Croatia), from the 17th century in the context of Roman legal tradition. The analysis deals with forty-seven glagolitic wills collected by the great connoisseur of past of the city of Šibenik and its surrounding area, don Krsto Stošić, and which were originally composed by glagolitic priests and notaries (don Mate Despot, don Matij Perošić, don Gustin Vidulin Černarić and don Jivan Oštarić) in the period from 1661 to 1683. These testaments consist of various elements such as the appointment of heirs, legatees, witnesses and procurators. The text essentially deals with a testament as a means of disposing with one’s property in a particular area and time period, in the context of Roman legal tradition. Additionally, it provides a unique insight into various aspects of social life and property of testators generally.

The paper presents 200 newly discovered engravings for the Annales Ferdinandei by Franz Christoph of Khevenhüller from the year 1640. Many of them were made by the Augsburgian engraver Wolfgang Kilian and his company. One of the most productive cooperators of Kilian was Elias Wideman, who from 1646–1652 produced his own portrait books. It can also be proved that Khevenhüller used as models for his portraits the most recent original paintings of the imperial family and the aristocrats.

In the 17th century, the hagiography and iconography of Bishop Iohannes Traguriensis were enriched by various members of Trogir’ s noble families. In this promotion of the cult of the local beato, Dominik Andreis stands out with his efforts: he was the author of an unpublished Litany in Croatian (1632), the instigator of publishing an Italian Vita by Giovanni Francesco Loredan (1648), and the sponsor of a three act drama by Girolamo Brusoni (1656), performed in Trogir with musical intermezzos and published two years later (1658).

Adriatic ,slave trade ,Dalmatian communes ,Ottomans ,Venetians ,17th century ,History (General) ,D1-2009 - Abstract
Since Antiquity the slave trade in the Adriatic had been a long term activity which had an important impact on the economy of the Dalmatian communes. The status of slaves and their traffic was originally regulated by the Statutes of individual Dalmatian towns. With the appearance of Ottomans in late Middle Ages into their hinterland numerous changes occurred. The traffic in slaves was redirected towards the east where the Christian captives were then sold. Nevertheless, with the new intensity of Christian warfare against the Ottomans, the Muslim slave trade from the Ottoman Empire increased particularly in Dalmatian marketplaces which were mediatory because the real trade of Ottoman subjects was across the Adriatic on the Apennine Peninsula. This traffic reached a special intensity during the Candian and Morean Wars in the second half of the 17th century. The trade of the Ottoman captives in the Adriatic, how they were kept and sold, including the legal regulations of the trade from the Venetian and Papal points of view in the 17th century, are discussed in this paper.

the Croatian Kajkavian literary language ,17th century ,18th century ,19th century ,eulogies word order predicate complex verbal predicate infinitive modal verbs phase verbs ,Slavic languages. Baltic languages. Albanian languages ,PG1-9665 - Abstract
Eulogies have a long tradition in Latin texts printed in the Western European circle, in which they usually appear as Sermo funebris. Kajkavian eulogies usually have the titles mertvečko prodečtvo (prodičtvo), prodeka sprevodna, spomenek and žalosno govorenje. They show a high degree of authorial freedom that is conditioned by social codes and the writer’s social status. The paper provides an analysis of word order in co-sentences with complex verbal predicates. In a corpus of printed texts in the Croatian Kajkavian literary language the order of syntactic units of complex verbal predicates are determined, as well as the place of the complex verbal predicate in a co-sentence and its relationship with other parts of the co-sentence.

Rekonstruira administrativnu i teritorijalnu organizaciju tog segmenta Vojne krajine, brojnost i funkciju rodova stajaće vojske te njihove plaće i zapovjednu strukturu. Uspoređuje stanje u 17. stoljeću sa situacijom u 16. stoljeću s ciljem ocrtavanja trendova u taktičkom i strateškom razvoju habsburških snaga na Vojnoj krajini (Militärgrenze)., The paper presents the functioning of the Slavonian and Petrinian Frontier (also referred to as the Slavonian Frontier or Varaždin Generalate) in the 17th century: its administrative and territorial organization, branches of the standing army, its numbers, and the soldiers’ ranks and salaries. The 17th century development is compared with the situation in the 16th century in order to make conclusions about the tendencies in tactics and strategies deployed by the Habsburg military in the Militärgrenze (Military Frontier).

Analizom inventara Ljubavčevih dobara, koji uz ostalo otkriva i njegovu bogatu privatnu knjižnicu, čitalački afiniteti ovoga učenjaka poslužit će kao paradigma za bolje poznavanje opće kulture čitanja na istočnojadranskom prostoru i definiranje njegove pozicije na relaciji kulturnih središta i periferija onovremenoga Sredozemlja., Centuries-long connections between the two Adriatic coasts have resulted in vivid exchange of experiences, with cultural activity being one of their essential components. The aim of this paper is to use the specific aspect of culture consumption to see how cultural life in the city of Zadar, as the centre of the Venetian Province of Dalmatia and Albania, functioned in the mid-17th century, during the long Candian War (1645-1669), which proved exhausting for both warring parties – the Venetian Republic and the Ottoman Empire. Based on the reading habits of a prominent resident of Zadar, the wealthy nobleman and scholar Šimun Ljubavac (1608-1663), the paper discusses the intellectual preoccupations of the social elites in the Eastern Adriatic. As a lawyer, historian, and typical polymath of his time, Ljubavac owned a rich private library with some four hundred titles from various fields of sciences and arts, from ancient to modern authors. An inventory of his library was put together after his death and is today preserved in the State Archive in Zadar. Although such inventories are rare, which hinders a detailed comparative analysis, Ljubavac can be taken as a paradigmatic case to make conclusions about the extent to which Dalmatian scholars were able to follow the main trends in sciences and arts, which may help define the general role of the Eastern Adriatic among the cultural centres and peripheries of the Mediterranean and Europe during the given period.

In introductory parts of the work is analyzed the political, social and religious context of the Zadar archdiocese area in the period of the end of 16th and the first half of 17th century. Decrees of the Council of Trent and decline in the productivity of domestic painting workshops are factors that influenced the increase in orders for paintings from masters working in the center of the Republic of Venice. This trend is discussed in more detail in the paper in the narrower area of the Zadar archdiocese, but it is a phenomenon that is characteristic of the entire eastern coast of the Adriatic. Analyzing imported paintings, it was observed a greater demand for paintings by the Venetian painter Palma the Younger and his followers. In the paper, the stylistic expression of Palma the Younger is analyzed in more detail, and his altarpieces painted for clients of Zadar are individually processed. Commissions of paintings from his followers in the area of the Zadar archdiocese were also considered, so the paper provides an overview of all the altarpieces attributed with certainty to an individual painter in Palma circle, their cataloguing, stylistic analysis and the context of the order. Also, the profiles of each follower and mutual similarities and differences in artistic expression are discussed. Ultimately, based on the available data, efforts were made to determine the orders and the circumstances of individual order of paintings.

– 1664.), nasljednog kapetana Legrada i čitavog Međimurja (1640. – 1664.), carskog komornika (1637. – 1664.), hrvatsko-slavonsko-dalmatinskog bana (1647. – 1664.), zaladskog i šimeškog (šomođskog) župana (1646. – 1664.) i tajnog savjetnika (1659. Zrinskog iz rane jeseni 1663. za koji se ranije smatralo da predstavlja spis o savezu Petra Zrinskog, Wesselényija i Nádasdyja, dio argumentacije Nikole Zrinskog u vezi s prepirkom sa zapovjednikom carske vojske Montecuccolijem oko Novog Zrina iz 1664. i memorandum Nikole Zrinskog caru i kralju Leopoldu iz 1664. godine., Based on historiographic results and sources, the paper presents selected aspects of life and work of Nikola VII Zrinski (Čakovec, 3rd May 1620 – the Otok forest near Kuršanec, 18 November 1664). Included are however only the most essential information regarding his literary achievements and estates. The paper offers information relating to Zrinski’s birth, childhood, education, family situation, as well as military and political career. During his career, he held the positions of: Hungarian royal groom (1628–1664); hereditary captain of Legrad and the entire region of Međimurje (1640–1664); imperial chamberlain (1637–1664); Croatian-Slavonian-Dalmatian ban (1647–1664); district prefect of Szalad and Somogy (1646–1664); and privy councillor (1659–1664); as well as leader of resistance against the Viennese absolutism. The text further tackles selected tributes to culture; links with the church; and the death of Nikola VII Zrinski; as well as identity issues. Enclosed are 20 selected letters by Nikola VII Zrinski, written between 1642 and 1664. Zrinski wrote one of these letters in the Croatian language, whilst 19 were for the first time translated into Croatian. The record of the conclusion of alliance of Wesselényi, Nádasdy and Nikola VII Zrinski, dated early autumn of 1663, which had earlier been considered the record of the alliance of Petar Zrinski, Wesselényi and Nádasdy; a part of Nikola Zrinski’s argumentation relating to his quarrel with Montecuccoli, commander of the imperial army, with regard to Novi Zrin of 1664; and Nikola Zrinski’s memorandum to the Emperor and King Leopold of 1664 were translated into Croatian as well.

This undergraduate thesis explains the socio-political situation in the city of Split in the first half of the 17th century and the context of the arrival of archbishop Sforza Ponzone in Split. The paintings that have been analyzed in the work were required for Cathedral of Split by Sforza Ponzone from his brother, painter Matteo Ponzone. The work explains in which measure have the decisions of the Council of Trent as well as socio-political circumstances in the city of Split in the 17th century impacted the iconography of the ordered paintings. Moreover, the paintings have been analyzed in the context of the whole oeuvre of Matteo Ponzone and his stylistic shifts.

– 1669.)., The paper examines the Zadar register of deaths from 1617 to 1651. An analysis of the structure of Zadar society was made based on data from the register through research on individual class groups (patricians, church members, members of the Venetian military and civil administration, citizens, commoners) and professional groups (craftsmen, merchants, soldiers, fishermen, sailors, farmers and others). This period was marked by several plague epidemics, and the Register also includes part of the Kandyan War (1645-1669). A total of 4,865 persons are registered, of which 1,065 persons and their family members from various crafts, maritime and service professions, with 593 members of the military or their family members, 72 members of civil authorities, public servants and their family members, and 255 priests, nuns, clerics and members of their families. It is not known to which professional group 2,880 or 59.2% of the deceased belong. Burials were performed in the majority of churches in Zadar (29) and in the Lazaret (its name is not specified). Military personnel were mostly buried in the church of St. Francis, while the nobility was buried mostly in the churches of St. Francis, St. Mary and St. Dominic. Commoners and clergy were buried in all churches equally, depending on the neighbourhood in which they lived (e.g. townspeople mostly in St. Sylvester or St. Michael), while members of the clergy were buried in the churches where they worked. It was concluded that the largest number of inhabitants of Zadar at the time of writing this registry book consisted of people from Zadar or those whose origin was not registered. The fewest people came from the Croatian hinterland (only one person), while the rest of the population consisted of people from other Venetian areas, as well as the population from Zadar hinterland and the islands. Members of the military crews mostly came from those other Venetian areas, while the population from Zadar area came to live and work in Zadar, most of them settling there permanently, and in times of Ottoman danger also taking refuge in the city. It is evident from the lists of surnames that some of them have been preserved in Zadar to this day. Most people from the area of Venice and the Apennine peninsula came to hold positions with civil and military authorities and as members of the clergy, except for members of military crews. There is a significant number of people (44) from more distant areas such as France, Germany, Tyrol, who were either members of military crews or some artisans.

O lokalnim majstorima poput Mihovila Parkića i Antuna Moneghina nema puno podataka, ali izrazito su značajni u kontekstu sagledavanja načina funkcioniranja bratovštinskih udruženja u manjim dalmatinskim gradovima u razdoblju poslijetridentske obnove., Numerous wars and plague epidemics have marked the city of Šibenik through the 17th century, which caused a bad image of the city, which affected the field of art as well as the acquisition of paintings and painting production. The painting heritage of the 17th century was diverse, and most examples of sacral themes belong to imported painting. Bishops, church orders, fraternities and prominent representatives of Dalmatian society played a major role in the orders of paintings. The beginning of the 17th century was also marked by lifting of gilded and wooden altars, many of which are still preserved today. Although several works by local masters have been preserved, the works of late Renaissance painting and the continuation of the tradition of the so-called the golden age of Venetian painting stand out the most. The paintings of Palma Junior as well as the followers of his manner stand out in particular. Of great importance are also the paintings of Matteo Ponzone, a skilfully Venetian Baroque painter, which are kept today in the church of St. Francis. Three paintings stand out in the city, which are based on stylistic characteristics and are connected with the Bassano workshop, which belongs to the Venetian painting circle. A more detailed analysis shows that throughout the 17th century the influence of Venetian templates was dominant. There is not much information about local masters such as Mihovil Parkić and Antun Moneghin, but they are extremely important in the context of understanding the functioning of fraternal associations in smaller Dalmatian towns in the period of post-Tridentine reconstruction.

CANDELABRA ,ACANTHUS in art - Abstract
The aim of this paper is to publish and place in an art-historical context two silver wall candelabra with busts of classical antique figures surrounded by intertwined stylized acanthus leaves. The candelabra are kept in the Franciscan convent of Trsat. They were last documented in a photo-documentary campaign by Artur Schneider during the 1930s, and in 1974 they were added to the cultural heritage list as part of the convent's inventory. It is a very valuable set of silver wall candelabra, donated to the Franciscan convent of Trsat in 1693 by the Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I Habsburg (1658-1705). The author refers to the written sources confirming the commission of the candelabra and analyses the evolution of their peculiar typology. In their design and iconographic programme, judging by the various analogies and graphic models, they corresponded to the production of Augsburg goldsmiths. This hypothesis is supported by the hallmark of the city of Augsburg and another one indicating goldsmith Antoni Grill I, documented in that art centre in the period from 1668-1700. This master thesis will deal with issues of Senj's economic history during the 17th century, more precisely the time between the Peace of Madrid and the Peace in Srijemski Karlovci (1617-1699). Within studying Senj’s economic history as its narrow field of work I will analyze specific type of trade which was developed due to the needs of the local population to continue dealing with their most important branch of industry, namely intermediary trade. Furthermore, the subject of research on economic specifics will cover the early modern city on two levels: Senj as a free royal city and Senj as a military border captaincy. In other words, the work will include research into the economic possibilities of the civilian population, in which Senj merchants, ship owners, seafarers, and all those who have the status of citizens according to the Senj Statute can participate. On the other hand, the military aspect of the administration will be considered, as well as attempts of state intervention in the city's economy, first through the captain of the Senj as a representative of the royal government, and then directly by the Habsburg government itself. Also, the paper will be divided into several key chapters and subchapters, starting with political and social opportunities important for understanding the main issue, with emphasis on the aspect of social structure in relation to trade activities, followed by analysis of local trade (town fairs), maritime and intermediary trade. At the very end of the paper, I will briefly examine the economic changes at the end of the century, as well as beginnings of the first external influences of the state government within the framework of the new economic ideas of Habsburg mercantilism.

- Abstract
The article explores the biographical sources, identity, bibliography and music output of the early-Baroque composer, erudite and Dominican monk Vincenzo Comneno (Vinko Komnen; 1590-1667), who lived and worked in Dubrovnik, Rome, Naples and Spain. The research is based on the new insights and interpretations of the complex publication (a kind of Miscellanea Proceedings) entitled Le glorie cadute dell'Antichissima, ed Augustissima Famiglia Comnena, edited by Lorenzo Miniati and published in Venice in 1663, as its second edition. It has been stated that V. Comneno is in fact the author of two texts included in this publication. Concerning the bibliography of historiographical sources used for genealogical purposes, special attention is drawn to Comneno's Croatian and Italian predecessors: »Historia di Ragusa del Padre D. Eusebio Caboga ...«; »Historia di Ragusa di Giacomo di Pietro Lucari ...«; »Historia di Ragusa di Fra Serafino Razzi ...«; »Ludouico Cerua, detto Tuberone, Abbate Benedettino«; »Mauro Orbini, Abbate Benedettino«; »Vincenzo Probieuich« (sic!). In addition, a network of his Croatian contemporaries has been discovered (Christoforo Ivanovich -- Kristofor Ivanović, Ioannis Tonci Margnavitius Dalmata -- Ivan Tomko Mrnavić, Raffaele Leuakouich -- Rafael Levaković, Thomaso Ierinich -- Toma Jerinić, Vuladislauo (sic!) Menze -- Vladislav Menčetić and Giouanni Gondola -- Ivan Dživo Gundulić), who were included in this publication either with their texts or by their names being mentioned on various occasions. Some of them (Ivanovich in Venice, Levakovich in Rome) were also dealing otherwise with musical issues, but not on this occasion. In the part dealing with music, it has been confirmed that his three madrigals, printed in this publication, have been intended for the wedding of Maria Anna of Austria and Philipp IV, but doubts have been expressed about Comneno's motives for this gesture. The same is true for his alleged activities as composer of motets and canzonettas, as well as for his skill in playing various musical instruments. The hypothetical musico-theoretical work Annotationes in Geometriam, Arithmetica, Musicam, & Astrologiam, not found as yet, probably conservative in attitudes, might have been used in Comneno's activities as teacher in the Naples Dominican University during the 1630s and 1640s. Future analyses and hermeneutical approaches will have a difficult task in trying to distinguish in two ways what is apocryphal in Miniati's publication Le glorie cadute: firstly, what was written by Comneno himself and what was originally done by other writers (even the music of the madrigals themselves); and, secondly, what is correct and incorrect in various assertions, most important among them being those dealing with his allegedly Comnenian-Byzantine paternal origins. Kroz analizu specifčnosti njihove službe i analizu samog procesa nastanka te značenja bilježničkih spisa, članak rekonstruira određene aspekte ranonovovjekovnog urbanog društva, ali i pridonosi boljem razumijevanju ove vrijedne vrste arhivskog gradiva., Notarial documents have long been recognised as suitable archival materialamong historians and are widely used in research on various topics. In this sense, however, their authors themselves have been largely neglected in foreign andespecially in Croatian historiography. With a brief overview of the research ofthe early modern age done in domestic historiography, this paper focuses onthe activities of notaries as a separate professional group in the city of Zadar inthe mid-17th century and the final product of their work - notarial documents.First, by analysing the specifics of the service of Zadar notaries, from acquiringtheir qualifications, duration and scope of their work and the circle of peoplewho needed notary services as clients, the article reconstructs certain aspectsof early modern, primarily urban, society. Ten, by focusing on the creationprocess and the format, content and meaning of notarial records, we pointout the importance of these documents. Parallel with that, we indicate theimportance of this service for the functioning of a whole urban community. At the same time, through the work of notaries, we take a hard look at theirposition in the social environment in which they operated in order to assess thecredibility of their documents for historical research. Finally, by reconstructingthis professional group’s work in the societal context and notary practice inthe entire Venetian Republic and presenting typical documents produced inZadar during the Venetian administration, we wanted to contribute to a betterunderstanding of this valuable type of archival material. We also attempted toencourage and facilitate possible future research and the work on publishing thistype of archival material.

The paper follows the epidemic wave which spread in 1679 from Austrian towards Slovenian Styria, and then, continuing through Ptuj and Varaždin, moved in the directions of Podravina and Croatian Zagorje, reaching Markuševac and other villages in the Zagreb region. A description of the disease and its devastating impact on the Ptuj region is taken from a unique and preserved source, the Latin poem about the plague by the Hajdina parish pastor, Jurij Hauptmanič. The paper then focuses on the situation in Zagreb in the summer and autumn of 1682 and the beginning of 1683, analysing Jesuit and Franciscan sources, the Croatian Viceroy’s letters, decisions by the Gradec City Council, as well as economic indicators. The paper concludes that the epidemic’s penetration of the city was avoided by proper crisis management. In doing so, the paper rectifies certain hitherto expressed views in historiography, according to which the plague was also present in Gradec. Sources, however, show that it remained restricted to the Franciscan monastery at Kaptol, and that the only victims were four friars in that very monastery, in August and September 1682. They were Franciscan students, sent to Varaždin, where they were infected by the plague (or possibly during mendication in the villages), and they died shortly after returning to the monastery at Kaptol. Some of the Franciscans scattered whilst some stayed in the Kaptol monastery, but two escaped to the Poor Clares’ convent at Gradec. On 4 September 1682, the Croatian Viceroy ordered that both the Monastery and the Convent be placed under heavy guard. The doors of the Kaptol monastery were to be bricked up, and the Gradec convent was to be locked, while ensuring the delivery of food and water. The Gradec City Council implemented the Viceroy’s orders, but did not introduce additional measures apart from ordering citizens to keep guard at the city gates while they were open during the day, and that all vagrants and vagabonds be immediately put to employment in the city or banished. The Viceroy left open the city’s ports on the border river of Sava, with strict adherence to the precautionary measures. The measures taken were adequate, because, apart from the Franciscan victims, nobody got infected in either Gradec or Kaptol. The disease remained restricted to a few surrounding villages. At the behest of the Jesuits, the Viceroy ordered that schools could again be opened on 12 January 1683, which essentially announced the end of the epidemic in the Zagreb region.

Sukladno s tim, u radu se otvara i pitanje religijskog emocionalnog režima i emocionalnog stila karakterističnog za doba katoličke obnove, koji se njegovao i u dubrovačkim ženskim samostanima., Written by the Ragusan poet and playwright Junije Palmotić (1607–1667), religious poem Sveta Katarina od Sijene has until now been neglected by Croatian literary historiography. This article aims to show that Sveta Katarina, classified as a Baroque religious poem, leans on the tradition of mystical literature, which distinguishes it from the representative tear poems written by Ivan Gundulić, Ivan Bunić Vučić and Ignjat Đurđević. Thematising the experience of the higher, divine love, the poem is analysed from the emotionological perspective in terms of both particular representation of this type of love and of the reception, i.e., the emotions that the poem was ‘expected’ to arouse in the audience. The analysis shows that the representation of divine love on the one side points to late-medieval female mysticism, and on the other, to postTridentine religious poetry. Yet these insights also open questions on the pragmatic function of the work intended for nuns with an aim to incite particular ‘religious’ emotions, along with the question of the religious emotional regime and emotional style which in the period of Catholic Renewal was also pursued in the female convents of Dubrovnik.

The topic of this thesis is Varaždin trade in the 17th century. The research is based on published towns registers and accounts kept in the State Archives in Varaždin. Trade is viewed in the context of the Central Eastern European trade network. Regional trade trends are presented and their impact on the Varaždin case is observed. The preconditions for the trade development of Varaždin are determined with regard to its geographical location, traffic position, demographic picture and trade privileges. Several types of commerce are shown, which are determined according to the goods circulating at the town fairs and the market. The position and significance of trade in the regional context is determined by the directions of import and export of goods, the origin of goods and the business of foreign and domestic traders. Data on the origin, business activities and social and political position of the trader are presented. Finally, the impact of aristocratic trade on city trade and trade operations in the region is examined.
