Goal. To explain and distinguish terms that refer to organisation, departmentalisation, organisational structure, its elements and dimensions, internal and external factors that influence it. In addition, this paper's goal is to contribute to better understanding of library organisational structure as a framework for leadership and managerial functions. These goals present foundation for an operative formulation, i. e. an improvement of library organisational structure. Approach/methodology/design. After the introductory defining of the terms from the field of organisation, two levels of library activity classification follow; first, a classification on library and non-library activities, and second, a differentiation on general and specific activities. The discussion about organisational structure starts with the explanation of structure elements, followed by the departmentalisation of activities and work tasks, organisational structure dimensions, factors that affect the choice and design of library organisational structures, and ends with the analysis of types of organisational structures appropriate for libraries. The paper further discusses two models of library organisational structure. The first is a traditional model, and the second is more modern in its design. The paper uses the method of observation and the analysis of the current library organisational structures, and gives their comparison with organisational structures of legal entities from similar fields. Results contribute to a better understanding of elements and dimensions of organisational structure and factors that influence its choice, design and adjustment to modern requirements of internal and external library environment. Practical implications. This paper can help librarians and other similar professions in understanding the concept of library organisational structure and make it easier for them to prepare and implement necessary organisational changes and adjustments to new social conditions and technologies, especially to information and communication technology. Social implications. This paper will foster better understanding and functional application of knowledge about organisational science in organisational behaviour of libraries as public institutions of special social interest (particularly in the area of culture, education, science, being informed, economy, and leisure). Originality and value lie in connecting the theory of organisational structures with its practical application on the organisational design of Croatian libraries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
