Imunosni sustav ima izrazito važnu ulogu obrane organizma od ozljeda i patogena, čime je i važan čimbenik invazivnog uspjeha invazivnih stranih vrsta. Signalni rak (Pacifastacus leniusculus) je jedna od najuspješnijih invazivnih stranih vrsta u slatkovodnim ekosustavima Europe, a prisutan je u Hrvatskoj u rijekama Muri, Dravi i u rijeci Korani, u kojoj se širi nizvodno i uzvodno. Imunosni odgovor može ovisiti o brojnim abiotičkim i biotičkim čimbenicima, može biti utjecan i samim fiziološkim statusom jedinki koji također može biti određen širenjem jedinki. Ovim istraživanjem usporedili smo jačine imunosnog odgovora između jedinki signalnog raka iz invazijskog središta i jedinki sa invazijskih fronti rijeke Korane mjereći nekoliko standardnih parametara imunosnog odgovora: broj hemocita, snagu reakcije inkapsulacije, aktivnost enzima fenoloksidaze, količinu profenoloksidaze. Uz imunosne, mjereni su i kondicijski parametri: Fultonov kondicijski faktor i hepatosomatski indeks jer je imunosni odgovor usko vezan uz kondiciju jedinki. Hepatosomatski indeks i snaga reakcije inkapsulacije bili su značajno veći u jedinki iz invazijske fronte, što ukazuje kako jedinke s invazijskih fronti imaju jači imunosni odgovor i bolju kondiciju od jedinki sa invazijskih središta. Immune system has an important role in defence of an organism from pathogens and injuries which makes it an important factor of invasion success of invasive alien species. Signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) is among the most successful invaders of European freshwater ecosystems, and is present in Croatia in the Mura, Drava and Korana river. In the Korana river it spreads both upstream and downstream. Immune response can depend upon a number of abiotic and biotic parameters, including individual physiological status, which may be dependent upon the dispersal process. In this thesis I have compared standard immune reaction parameters between signal crayfish individuals from invasion cores and fronts: number of hemocytes, activity of phenoloxidase, quantity of prophenoloxidase and encapsulation response. In addition to immune parameters, I have measured two condition indices: Fulton's condition factor and hepatosomatic index, since immune response and individual physiological condition are tightly connected. Values of hepatosomatic index and encapsulation response were significantly higher in individuals from invasion fronts compared to individuals from invasion cores, indicating that individuals from invasion fronts have stronger immune responses than individuals from invasion cores.

Kopnene vode i njihova bioraznolikost predstavljaju iznimno vrijedan prirodni resurs i imaju važnu ulogu u gospodarstvu, kulturi, estetici, znanosti i obrazovanju. Predstavljaju dom mnogim organizmima, međutim smatra se da su kopnene vode (slatkovodni ekosustavi) među najugroženijim ekosustavima na Zemlji. Ugroženosti slatkovodnih ekosustava uvelike doprinosi antropogeni utjecaj. Biološke invazije jedan su od glavnih uzročnika brzog smanjenja biološke raznolikosti, a posljednjih desetljeća u značajnom su porastu. Invazivna vrsta je strana vrsta unesena na novo područje izvan svog prirodnog areala rasprostranjenosti, gdje se uspijeva nesmetano razmnožavati i širiti, a uzrokuje značajne ekološke i/ili ekonomske štete. Tematika invazivnih vrsta u zadnjih nekoliko desetljeća postaje sve više aktualna. U sprječavanju budućih unosa stranih vrsta bitno je usredotočiti se na edukaciju unutar akademske zajednice i među lokalnim stanovništvom, kroz koju bi se iznijeli detalji o posljedicama unosa stranih vrsta, koje se mogu negativno odraziti na bioraznolikost Hrvatske. U ovom radu kao primjer invazivnih beskralježnjaka Hrvatskih slatkovodnih ekosustava prikazani su sjevernoameričke vrste deseteronožnih rakova Pacifastacus leniusculus – signalni rak i Procambarus viriginalis – mramorni rak. S obzirom da su deseteronožni rakovi generalisti (s obzirom na njihove prehrambene sklonosti), imaju ključnu ulogu u vodenom staništu prenoseći energiju unutar hranidbene mreže između vodenih i kopnenih hranidbenih mreža, koristeći različite izvore hrane i služeći kao plijen za brojne kralježnjake, od riba do sisavaca. U Hrvatskoj je signalni rak prvi put zabilježen 2008. godine u rijeci Muri, dok je mramorni rak po prvi puta zabilježen u jezeru Šoderica 2014. godine. Tema obrađena u ovom radu može se uklopiti u koncepte koji se poučavaju u sklopu nastavnih predmeta Priroda i Biologija, gdje se organizmi prikazani u ovom radu mogu koristiti kao primjer za ostvarenje brojnih odgojno-obrazovnih ishoda. Jedan od tih ishoda je usporedba uspješnosti prilagodbi organizama na primjerima autohtonih, alohtonih i invazivnih stranih vrsta, pri ostvarenju kojega dolazi i do osvješćivanja nastavnika i učenika o negativnom utjecaju invazivnih vrsta beskralježnjaka na bioraznolikost, zdravlje ljudi i gospodarstvo i o ispravnom postupanju u slučaju rukovanja invazivnim vrstama., Inland waters and their biodiversity represent an extremely valuable natural resource and play an important role in the economy, culture, aesthetics, science and education. They are home to many organisms, but inland waters (freshwater ecosystems) are considered to be among the most endangered ecosystems on Earth. The anthropogenic impact greatly contributes to the endangerment of freshwater ecosystems. Biological invasions are one of the main causes of the rapid decline in biodiversity and have been on the rise in recent decades. An invasive species is a species introduced into a new area outside its natural range, where it manages to reproduce and spread and causes significant ecological and/or economic damage. The topic of invasive species has become more interesting in the last few decades. In preventing future introductions of alien species, it is important to focus on education within the academic community and among the local population, through which details on the consequences of the introduction of alien species, which may negatively affect the biodiversity of Croatia, would be presented. In this paper, the North American species decapod crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus – signal crayfish and Procambarus viriginalis - marble crayfish are presented as an example of invasive invertebrates in Croatian freshwater ecosystems. Since decapod crayfish are generalists (given their dietary preferences), they play a key role in aquatic habitat by transferring energy within the food web between aquatic and terrestrial food webs, using a variety of food sources and serving as prey for many vertebrates, from fish to mammals. In Croatia, the signal crayfish was first recorded in 2008 in the Mura River, while the marble crayfish was first recorded in Lake Šoderica in 2014. The topic covered in this paper can fit into the concepts taught in the subjects Nature and Biology, where the organisms presented in this paper can be used as an example to achieve numerous learning outcomes. One of these outcomes is a comparison of the success of adaptations of organisms on the examples of indigenous, non-indigenous and invasive alien species. Achieving this learning outcome also raises awareness among teachers and students about the negative impact of invasive invertebrate species on biodiversity, human health and the economy, and about the right course of action in the case of invasive species management.

Hidra je slatkovodni beskralježnjak iz koljena žarnjaka. Zelena se hidra ističe prisutnošću jednostaničnih endosimbiotskih algi u svojim gastrodermalnim mioepitelnim stanicama. Natrijev metasilikat sintetički je spoj koji kao rezultat antropogenog djelovanja dospijeva u okoliš te je poznavanje njegovog učinka na žive organizme važno za održivost ekosustava. U ovom radu istraživao se učinak natrijevog metasilikata na zelenu i smeđu hidru. Cilj istraživanja bio je odrediti postoji li razlika u toksičnosti spoja na dvije vrste hidri, te da li endosimbiotski odnos daje zelenoj hidri prednosti u odgovoru na nepovoljne uvjete okoliša. Hidre su tretirane s četiri koncentracije metasilikata te su tijekom tri dana promatrane morfološke, bihevioralne i reproduktivne promjene. Za analizu citološko - histoloških i morfometrijskih promjena izrađeni su standardni trajni preparati zelenih hidri. Utvrđeno je kako natrijev metasilikat u subletalnim koncentracijama u zelenih i smeđih hidri uzrokuje migraciju, smanjenu podražljivost, oštećenje lovki i promjenu oblika tijela. U zelenih je hidri štetan učinak najizraženiji bio prvi dan nakon tretiranja, a u smeđih hidri treći dan. Spoj je uzrokovao oštećenja staničnih slojeva i mezogleje te promjenu u položaju algi unutar stanica. Subletalne koncentracije natrijevog metasilikata izazvale su morfološka oštećenja i bihevioralne promjene u obje vrste hidri, a promjene su bile intenzivnije u smeđe hidre. S obzirom na to može se zaključiti kako endosimbiotske alge zelenoj hidri donose prednosti u prilagođavanju na uvjete u okolišu. Možemo zaključiti i kakav učinak bi ovaj spoj mogao imati na stanje vodenih ekosustava. Hydra is a freshwater invertebrate from the phylum Cnidaria. In its gastrodermal myoepithelial cells green hydra harbours endosymbiotic unicellular algae. Sodium metasilicate is a synthetic compound which is released in the environment as a product of human activities. Therefore, knowing the effects it has upon living organisms is important for sustainability of ecosystems. The aim of this research was to determine its effects on green and brown hydra and to compare the changes in the two hydra species. Hydras were treated with four concentrations of metasilicate and morphological, behavioral and reproductive changes were observed during the next three days. For cyto-histological analysis standard preparations of green hydra were made. The results have shown that sublethal concentrations of sodium metasilicate caused migration, reduced reactivity to mechanical stimuli, changes in body contraction and damage of tentacles. Effects were the strongest on the first day after treatment in green hydra and on the third day in brown hydra. The compound caused damage of cellular layers and mesoglea, and changed distribution of algae inside cells. Sublethal concentrations of sodium metasilicate caused morphological and behavioral changes in both species of hydra, and they were more intense in brown hydra. Green hydra showed better adaptability to unfavourable environmental conditions and we can conclude about the effect this metasilicate could have on aquatic ecosystems.

Signalni rak, Pacifastacus leniusculus, je invazivna vrsta slatkovodnih deseteronožnih rakova koja je u Hrvatskoj prvi puta zabilježena 2008. godine u rijeci Muri. Godine 2011. ova je vrsta zabilježena i u rijeci Dravi, u koju se proširila iz Mure, te u Korani, u koju je unesena antropogenim putem. Dosadašnja su istraživanja pokazala da je signalni rak rasprostranjen u donjem toku rijeka Mure i Korane. Cilj ovog istraživanja je bio po prvi puta usporediti morfološke značajke geografski odvojenih populacija invazivne vrste signalnog raka iz rijeka Mure i Korane te dobiti detaljan uvid u populacijsku strukturu, kao i utvrditi moguće razlike između njih. Analizirana je 21 morfometrijska značajka na 110 jedinki vrste signalnog raka, ulovljenih na dvije lokacije na svakoj rijeci. Dobiveni rezultati su pokazali da postoje značajne razlike u morfometrijskim značajkama između spolova na svim istraženim postajama, kao i značajne razlike između lokaliteta, odnosno rijeka, i kod mužjaka i kod ženki. Multivarijantnom diskriminantnom analizom prikupljenih podataka utvrđene su značajke koje najbolje odvajaju populacije signalnih rakova. Razlike u mjerenim značajkama između rijeka možemo pripisati razlikama u staništu, dok razlike između populacija s iste rijeke možemo pripisati utjecaju gustoće populacija i intraspecijske kompeticije na rast jedinki. Signal crayfish, Pacifastacus leniusculus, is an invasive species of freshwater decapod crustaceans, which was first recorded in Croatia in 2008 in the Mura River. In 2011 this species was recorded in the Drava River, where it spread from the Mura River, and also in the Korana River, where it was introduced by human activities. Previous research has shown that the signal crayfish is dispersed in the lower course of the Mura and Korana rivers. The aim of this study was to compare the morphological features of geographically separate populations of this invasive signal crayfish species from Mura and Korana rivers, and to get a detailed insight into the population structure, as well as to determine possible differences between them. We analyzed 21 morphometric characteristics on 110 individuals of the signal crayfish, caught in two locations on each river. The results showed significant differences in morphological characteristics between the sexes at all investigated sites, and significant differences between localities and rivers, both in males and females. With multivariate discriminant analysis we determined the principal morphometric characteristics which separate the populations of signal crayfish. These differences in measured morphometric characteristics between the rivers can be attributed to differences in habitat, while differences between populations of the same river are probably driven by density-dependence processes and intraspecific competition on the growth of individuals.

Širenje invazivnih vrsta danas predstavlja jedan od glavnih uzroka gubitka biološke raznolikosti u svijetu. U ovom radu opisane su štetne posljedice invazivnih vrsta mekušaca, školjkaša i puževa, za autohtone vrste, stanište i ekosustav u cjelini. U pogledu ekoloških i socio-ekonomskih učinaka, Dreissena polymorpha spominje se kao jedna od najrazornijih vrsta u vodenim ekosustavima. Uzrokuje brojne nepovoljne učinke poput ugibanja autohtonih školjkaša, promjene kvalitete vode, izmjene strukture bentosa, obraštanja plovila i cjevovoda. Osim nje, opisane su još tri vrste invazivnih školjkaša: Mytilopsis leucophaeata svojim obraštajima uzokuje veliku štetu industriji, Limnoperna fortunei djeluje pogubno na autohtone školjkaše, reducira zalihe fitoplanktona i zagađuje vodene sustave raznih postrojenja. Corbicula fluminea ima slične ekološke učinke kao D. polymorpha - negativno utječe na autohtone Unionidae i zbog visokih stopa filtracije reducira fitoplankton te obrašta rashladne sustave u elektranama. Četiri vrste puževa također se navode kao vrste sa štetnim učincima: Pomacea canaliculata i P. insularum osim što mogu ugroziti autohtone vrste, uništavaju usjeve riže čime pridonose velikom ekonomskom gubitku tog područja te osim toga mogu biti vektori za bolesti i ugrožavati ljudsko zdravlje. Bithynia tentaculata infestira vodoopskrbne sustave, reducira brojnost nativnih vrsta i prenosi metilje koji infestiraju i ubijaju ptice močvarice. Potamopyrgus antipodarum svojim gustim populacijama istiskuje autohtone mekušce i mijenja primarnu proizvodnju, što ima znatne učinke na ekosustav. Jedan od najvećih problema u suzbijanju širenja invazivnih vrsta je kasno otkrivanje štetnih učinaka nakon introdukcije, stoga je važno na vrijeme otkriti potencijalno invazivne vrste i primjeniti metode smanjivanja njihovog negativnog učinka na autohtonu faunu. The spread of invasive species represents one of the main causes of biodiversity loss in the world. This work describes the harmful effects of invasive molluscs, bivalves and snails, for native species, habitat and ecosystem as a whole. In terms of environmental and socio-economic effects, Dreissena polymorpha is one of the most destructive species in aquatic ecosystems. It causes numerous adverse effects such as deflection of indigenous bivalves, water quality changes, changes in the structure of benthos and fouling vessels and pipelines. Three other species of invasive bivalves have been described: Mytilopsis leucophaeata whose fouling causes great harm to the industry, Limnoperna fortunei who has detrimental acts to the indigenous bivalves, reducing stocks of phytoplankton and polluting the water systems of various plants. Corbicula fluminea has similar environmental effects as D. polymorpha - a negative impact on indigenous Unionidae, by reducing phytoplankton because of the high rate of filtration and by fouling cooling systems in power plants. Four species of snails are also referred as species of harmful effects: Pomacea canaliculata and P. insularum, by threatening native species and destroying rice crops, which contribute to large economic loss of the area, and in addition can be vectors of disease and endanger human health. Bithynia tentaculata infests water supply systems, reduces the number of native species and transmittes trematodes that infest and kill waterfowl. Potamopyrgus antipodarum supersedes native bivalves and changes primary production with dense populations, which has significant effects on the ecosystem. One of the biggest problems in combating the spread of invasive species is late detection of harmful effects after the introduction, and therefore it is important to early detect the potentially invasive species and to apply the methods of reducing their negative impact on the indigenous fauna.

U Hrvatskoj su trenutno prisutne 4 autohtone vrste deseteronožnih rakova (Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus, Austropotamobius pallipes i Austropotamobius torrentium) te 3 invazivne vrste: Orconectes limosus, Pacifastacus leniusculus i Procambarus fallax f. virginalis. Alohtone vrste karakterizira veći fekunditet, veća agresivnost te otpornost na račju kugu koja negativno utječe na autohtone vrste koje nisu otporne na ovu bolest. Sve invazivne vrste pronađene su u kontinentalnom dijelu Hrvatske, u vodotocima crnomorskog slijeva, gdje najčešće dolaze u doticaj s vrstama Astacus astacus i Astacus leptodactylus uzrokujući smanjenje njihovih populacija. Velike populacije invazivnih vrsta rakova isto tako mogu uzrokovati nestajanje biljnih i životinjskih vrsta. Također značajni negativni utjecaj na autohtone vrste rakova ima i antropogeni pritisak (onečišćenje i degradacija staništa) na njihova staništa. Ulov vršama pokazao se kao najbolji način za regulaciju populacija invazivnih vrsta rakova u Hrvatskoj. Nedavni pronalazak mramornog raka na jezeru Šoderica predstavlja novu potencijalnu opasnost za slatkovodne ekosustave zbog sposobnosti ove vrste da se razmnožava partenogenezom. Currently, in Croatia 4 native freshwater crayfish species are present. Those are: Astacus astacus, Astacus leptodactylus, Austropotamobius pallipes and Austropotamobius torrentium. Also presence of 3 alien invasive species is recorded: Orconectes limosus, Pacifastacus leniusculus and Procambarus fallax f. virginalis. Non-indigenous (alien) species are characterized by higher fecundity, higher aggressiveness and resistance to crayfish plague, which has negative affects onto the native species that are not resistant to this disease. All invasive species are found in the inland of Croatia, in rivers of the Black Sea basin, where they are in contact with Astacus astacus and Astacus leptodactylus causing the reduction of their population. Apart from that, abundant invasive crayfish populations can cause disappearance of other aquatic animal and plant species. Negative anthropogenic influence is also significant in the form of pollution and degradation od habitat. Removing the invasive crayfish from freshwater habitats by traps has been shown as the best way for regulation of the invasive species spreading in Croatia. Recent discovery of marbled crayfish on the lake Šoderica presents new potential threat for freshwater ecosystems because of its parthenogenetic reproduction.
