In December 2019, infections in the then-unknown coronavirus began in the Chinese province of Hubei. Chinese authorities have responded tothis outbreak by imposing severe restrictions on the movement of people, effectively introducing curfews and quarantines across the country from late January onwards. This necessarily affected the economy as well, as many production sites were closed to reduce possible contact between individuals. The supply chain crisis that began in China in February and the demand shock that followed when the global economy closed closed vulnerable production strategies and distribution channels around the world. Temporary trade restrictions and shortages of pharmaceuticals, critical medical supplies, and other products have brought organizational weaknesses to the fore. These developments, combined with the US-China trade war, triggered the rise of economic nationalism. As a result of all this, producers around the world are under increasing political and competitive pressures to increase domestic production, employment in their countries, and to even eliminate dependence on sources considered risky and reconsider their use of lean manufacturing strategies that include minimizing quantities of stocks in their global supply chains.
