The goal of this study was to examine the relationships of multidimensional perfectionism and trait TP (time perspective) with competitive cognitive and somatic anxiety as well as analyse the mechanism underlying the effects of perfectionism on competitive anxiety in sports. Using an online survey, we obtained self-reported results of 121 competitive athletes. Questionnaires used were MIPS for perfectionism, ZTPI for trait TP and CSAI-2R for competitive anxiety. Two hierarchical regression analyses were conducted, one for each type of competitive anxiety (cognitive and somatic), in both of which we used the same blocks of predictors: the first block consisted of gender, age and frequency of competing, the second of perfectionism and self-confidence as well as self-reported sport efficacy and the third of trait TPs. Results show that a total of 57% of competitive anxiety variance was explained, and maladaptive perfectionism as well as past negative and future TP were statistically significant positive predictors. Also, we explained a total of 34% of somatic anxiety variance with maladaptive perfectionism and past negative TP once again showing as positive predictors. The effects of maladaptive perfectionism on cognitive and somatic competitive anxiety were twofold, showing both direct and indirect positive effects via past negative TP. The results show initial support to the model of time perspectives in athletes’ functioning and point out to potential benefits of TP-based interventions in the field of competitive sports.
