The aim of this master's thesis is to determine the characteristics of Andrey Tarkovsky's cinematic style. For this purpose, three of his auteur films were chosen: Ivan's Childhood, The Mirror and Stalker. Each one is a part of a different period of Tarkovsky's career as a filmmaker. The term auteur, which describes the director as the author of the movie, plays an important role. The characteristics of different elements of the cinematic language are analyzed — narrative structure, shots, the way the shots are assembled in the work of art as a whole, mise en scène, music, noises, color and so on. The analysis explains how Tarkovsky put to work some of his theoretical thoughts on filmmaking: the logic of poetry, sculpting in time and rhythm as a central organizational element.
