The paper introduces the concept of pseudoanglicism to Czech lexical studies. It sketches its history and use in the literature. It outlines the standard account of foreign word adaptation in Czech to bring out the distinction between adaptation and neologization. The adopted approach develops Duckworth's (1977) broad definition of pseudoanglicisms. Whether including only English elements (baby-box, basket) or both English and Czech ones (hokejista, soráč, onlinovka, etc.), the pseudoanglicism is a neologism rather than a simple loanword: a lexeme with a new form and a meaning of its own and no formal counterpart in English. Another possibility is that a lexeme (largely) retains its English form but acquires a different meaning in Czech (sprayer, mixér). In any case what separates English-based neologisms from adapted loanwords is their meaning peculiar to Czech. The different types of Czech pseudoanglicisms are illustrated using a sample of 516 items. The paper argues for the desirability to differentiate between anglicisms and pseudoanglicisms. The latter transcend linguistic borrowing, bearing witness to the active role of Czech speakers who employ English elements to produce Czech neologisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Regarding the fact that gay men leave less offspring than straight men, it is appropriate to raise a question by which means is male homosexuality maintained in a population and what could eventually be its evolutionary role. The aim of this paper is to summarize theories that try to explain male homosexuality within the framework of evolution. Furthermore, it aims to critically evaluate the results of empirical research that support particular theories or give evidence against them. In the first part, the paper provides a review of knowledge about the genetic and immunological origins of male homosexuality which consequently serves as a theoretical base for the main part of the paper that pursues the five most influential evolutionary theories of male homosexuality. - Abstract
This article consists in a thorough analysis of various Czech translations of the early poems of French Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé. The main difficulties arise from Mallarmé's omnipresence in Czech literary culture, together with a tendency to adapt his poetry to fit the mood of changing historical contexts and expectations. Many Czech poets -- some of the most prominent -- have dealt with Mallarmé's poetry, and its influence cannot be limited to a simple matter of translation. Among other things, it has thoroughly permeated Czech poetry in a specifically political way, as we see for example with Hrubín's historic address to the Convention of Writers in 1956. The overall aim of this paper however is to present a detailed examination of two Parnassian poems by Mallarmé as translated by F. Dohnal, E. Lešehrad, K. Èapek, V. Nezval, F. Hrubín, O. Nechutová, V. Mikeš and J. Pokorný. Based on a series of observations that have mainly to do with semantics, prosody and the translators' overarching strategies, the authors come to the conclusion that the early Czech translations depend too much (if not word-for-word) on the French originals, and on Parnassian poetical principals. A sensible change comes with K. Èapek. It is, however, F. Hrubín, himself an acclaimed poet, who offers the most convincing translation, at least if we take into consideration such traditional or conservative criteria as precision and accuracy. This paper presents an outline of the author’s doctoral thesis concerning an analysis of Czech and German translations of Dutch literature in the first half of the twentieth century. The essential issue is whether these texts should be called “translations” or “adaptations”. In the first part of this paper the latter terms are defined. Furthermore, two major Czech translators of Dutch literature from this period, Rudolf Jordan Vonka and Lída Faltová, are introduced, as well as the corpus. Finally, a case study of a Czech and German translation of Max Havelaar by Multatuli (1860) is presented.

The paper focuses on Lamy’s reflections on literary fiction and theatre as displayed in his Nouvelles réflexions sur l’art poétique (1678). Bernard Lamy (1640–1715) was a prolific writer, a major Augustinian thinker and a member of the French Oratory. Today, he is mostly known for his La rhétorique ou l’Art de parler (1st edition dates back to 1675), and his numerous works continue to elicit contributions from specialists on rhetoric and literary fiction. Lamy’s reflections on literature, theatre and aesthetics are based on rigorous moral and religious grounds, hence his overriding aim to dismantle and deconstruct the core of what some continue to call the “classical doctrine”. Lamy systematically treats topics such as embellishment, respect for the unities (time, place, action), paradoxes of aesthetical pleasure, verisimilitude, morality of literary and theatrical fiction, etc., all to demonstrate their radical incompatibility with the principles and values of an exemplary pious person. Lamy’s rigorist moral and religious views might well seem shocking to a modern reader, but we aim to show that his analysis of various creative strategies (especially intricacies of rhetorical adaptation and procedures of arousing an emotional/intellectual response) has a great potential to enrich our understanding of early modern fiction and theatre.

The paper presents the view of family resilience through the prism of known concepts of Masten (childhood period), Lerner (adolescence), and Antonovsky (old age). It describes the interconnection of personal resilience and family resilience, namely through the studies of Antonovsky and Walsh, stressing the incorporation of spiritual factors (Pergament) of family resilience into the research. These factors represent an important field of interest of both the researchers and family therapists today. The connections between the research results and the psychological practice as well as the brief comments concerning the related resilience models are also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Only few topics stir more attention of scientists, politicians, economists, environmental activists, managers of industrial companies and common population all around the globe than the issue of the climate system changes on the Earth, because the related impacts can be observed by every one of us in our neighbourhood – whether as extreme weather changes or as biodiversity changes. The author in his paper analyses international agreements regulating the climate change area, their development and contents. Special attention is being paid to analysis of the development of the international law regulation before the international codification in the area of climate changes. Finally, individual provisions of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement are being analysed as key sources of the international public law in the area of the protection of global climate system. Their successful or unsuccessful implementation will have an impact on our, not so distant future.

Neandetherthal skeletal remains are the first described and longest-studied modern human ancestors. The history of research on Neanderthals dates back to the discovery of the first specimen in the Feldhoffer cave in 1856. Initially, the debate focused on the taxonomic position of the Neanderthals and their exact anatomical relationship with modern humans. Later research concentrated on many other issues including partial aspects of life, biological and cultural adaptation to glacial conditions in Europe, issues of diet and health, or issues such as paleobiology of Neanderthals (reproductive behavior, ontogeny, mortality). Another important direction is the question of Neanderthal extinction in the period between 30 to 25 thousand years BP. This paper provides an overview of the research directions related to Neanderthals in the context of new discoveries of skeletal remains and the development of new methods of study. The authors use the specific research conducted on the Lapa do Picareiro site in Portugal as an example of a research aimed at the reconstruction of Neanderthal environment and Neanderthal behavior.

This review paper is a brief summary of the climate change story, transforming of primary concept from a scientific idea to a threatened world, and the contribution of Hungary in solution of above mentioned problems. According to the National Inventory published in 2010 the time series of GHG emissions together with real GDP changes will be shown. The way of mitigation available for Hungary is illustrated by climate strategies on different levels. Since the most vulnerable sector of the economy is agriculture as Hungarian researchers found, mainly the increasing frequency of drought seems to be dangerous. The impact of climate change was studied on the production level of main crops and the whole agricultural sector as well as on the GDP of the country. Some possible ways for agriculture to adapt to the increasing extremities will be mentioned. Altogether climate change means a challenge to technological development in all sectors of the economy and also in social cohesions and that is a feedback to adaptation.

The number of patients with diabetes mellitus has been increasing recently. The so-called diabetic leg and related amputation treatment belong to the complications of the disease. Amputation or removal of the end part of a limb obviously affects not only the physical aspect of a patient, but also the psychical, social and spiritual aspects. It is therefore vital that each nurse is able to choose from suitable techniques of communication with such patients and to provide them with sufficient support in the adaptation to a new life role. Callista Roy also dealt with this issue and developed a model named after her, which can be applied to patients adapting to a newly arisen situation, which amputation of a lower limb definitely is. Three goals were set in the thesis. The first one was to find out what kind of problems patients after amputation of a lower limb see in the individual adaptation modes according to C. Roy. Then we focused on the interventions applied by nurses to the support for the adaptation in the individual adaptation modes and to what extent nurses work with stimuli in Roy's conception. The research was based on the data collection by means of a qualitative method, the techniques of semi-structured interviews, and involved observation of patients after amputation of a lower limb and of nurses working at a standard surgery department. After the saturation of the research sample set the data was analysed and processed by means of the "pencil & paper" method. The research has shown that nurses devote particular attention to the physiologic adaptation mode and to the interdependence mode in their practice. In terms of the satisfaction of the basic physiologic needs they mostly mentioned the assistance in self-service activities, in the sphere of excretion and very often also interventions contributing to pain relief. In the self-concept group identity adaptation mode nurses mostly apply suitable communication and provision of sufficient information. In terms of the role function adaptation mode we can say that nurses search for this kind of information, but no activity supporting this mode was found among the nurses. Unlike nurses, who pay the highest attention to the satisfaction of the physiologic adaptation mode and thereto related interdependence mode, patients see shortcomings in all four adaptation modes. In the physiologic adaptation mode patients mostly pointed out problems with movement manifested themselves in the deficit of self-care. In the sphere of self-concept group identity, they mentioned the feeling of helplessness and inferiority. Nearly all patients see a problem in the dependence on the nursing staff and the disability to play the roles once played. Among the most frequent stimuli affecting a patient after lower limb amputation are pains that nurses relieve by means of analgesics prescribed by physicians, patients also often mention the approach of the staff and social interaction owing to the absence of family members. The research has shown that nurses approach patients with dignity and also respect the incoming visitors. The information obtained by this research can be used as a basis for seminars focused on this issue and lead to the improvement of the nursing care about patients with amputation of a lower limb.

The article points out that because of the fluctuating interest in various art-historical periods, there is a decisive necessity to draw our attention to the artworks from 1950s–1980s as many of important data concerning that period remains only in the memories of the witnesses of that time. Then, the paper presents several examples of Czech works of public art of that period in the Vysočina region and discusses different life stories of the artworks and their destiny after 1989 such as transfer (among others artworks by Roman Podrázský, Dana Marková and Jan Kodeta in Jihlava, Břetislav Benda in Ždírec nad Doubravou, Josef Malejovský in Lipnice nad Sázavou, Štěpán Kotrba in Světlá nad Sázavou or Jan Habarta in Velké Meziříčí), corosion / vandalism (a sculpture by Karel Hyliš and a mosaic by Miroslav Rybička in Havlíčkův Brod), conversion (a sculpture by Rostislav Magni in Telč), adaptation (an artwork by Miroslav Chaloupka in Havlíčkův Brod) and finally demolition (i. a. a sculpture by Karel Hyliš in Havlíčkův Brod).

Effective adaptation to the stress connected with a loss of employment requires expenditure of larger or smaller amounts of energy. This paper focuses on problems faced by unemployed men and women and their selection of various coping strategies. The research was carried out via questionnaire methods in a sample of 92 men and 84 women who had been unemployed for minimum of three months. The life satisfaction of the respondents was generally evaluated as a neutral value (neither satisfied nor dissatisfied). The most frequently selected coping strategies (regardless of gender) were self-distraction, active coping, planning and acceptance. Relatively infrequent strategies were religion, substance use and behavioural disengagement. Some differences were found between men and women in their evaluation of the seriousness of unemployment-related problems and their preferences of coping strategies.

The paper presents information on the projected drought exposure of Central Europe, describes the anticipated dynamics of the regional forests, and identifies measures facilitating the adaptation of forests to climate change-induced drought risk. On the basis of an ensemble of climate change scenarios we expect substantial drying in southern Slovakia and Hungary, while such trends were found to be less pronounced for the Czech Republic and Austria. In response to these climate trajectories, a change in species composition towards a higher share of drought tolerant species as well as the use of drought resistant provenances are identified as paramount actions in forest adaptation in the region. Adaptation to aggravating climate change may need to use artificial regeneration to enrich local gene pools and increase the drought tolerance of stands. Increasing risks from pests, pathogens and other disturbances are expected as a result of more frequent and severe droughts, underlining the need to put a stronger focus on risk management principles rather than on indicators of productivity in silviculture and forest planning. A consolidation of disturbance monitoring systems and a broader use of pest dynamics and hazard rating models are paramount tools to facilitate this adaptation process in forest management. The effectiveness of all the suggested measures needs to be controlled by efficient forest monitoring systems, the consolidation of which seems to be a timely task. Systematic and long-term implementation of the presented measures should increase forest stability and resilience, and further secure the sustainable provision of ecosystem services under climate change.

This thesis deals with the theme of integration and education of foreign pupils at primary schools. Further, it presents the findings which are connected with this theme. It focuses on classification of challenges and problems which can occur when the pupil starts to attend a school in a foreign country, and tries to find possible solutions and preventive measures as well. It has been confirmed that teachers see positive contribution of a foreign pupil in the class but they also admit and express concerns about insufficient preparedness and the lack of materials for work with the foreign pupils. The empirical part of this paper analyses three case studies which have been made thanks to observation of the foreign pupils and thanks to interviews with their class teachers. Diploma thesis "Television formats transmission into Czech environment since the creation of the dual system in the Czech Republic" focuses on television formats which have been adapted in the Czech television industry since 1994. TV formats, the primary analytical object of this thesis, belong among the strongest aspects of media globalization. Since specific television formats spread the same structure, idea and concept, they increasingly influence the practice in television markets and the process of globalization all over the world. With this continuity, the paper describes the theory of globalization, focusing on cultural and media imperialism. Further, newer theories of globalization and their subsequent transformation are described. Based on this theoretical basis, the thesis describes, which TV formats have been adapted since 1994 in the Czech Republic. Our analysis is based on in-depth interviews with Czech television professionals who have experiences with the purchasing and subsequent adaptation of television formats. The thesis provides the overview of all adapted TV formats in the Czech Republic, and describes reasons, difficulties and the overall process of adapting licensed television formats.

It is impossible to study Vietnamese press in Czech Republic without historical knowledge about this community on Czech territory. Hence, in the first part of this paper, the Vietnamese migration is fully explained. The aim of this work is to find out, how magazine Vạn Xuân reflects parallel Words in which it works - in Czech majority and Vietnamese minor. It is also important to know the range of information from Vietnam that the journal brings. Since most of Vietnamese do not speak Czech well and can not obtain information from Czech media, Vietnamese magazines are their primary, sometimes the only information source that they have. Thereby, Vietnamese press in Czech Republic has an important role in shaping knowledge and maybe even opinion of its community. Vietnamese community is quite isolated from Czech society, since it is its natural character. However, by and by, it is still more vivid that without adaptation, the Vietnamese community can not adequately exist. It is necessary for them to be conscious about Czech matters of policy, economy, but also culture. Without this consciousness, they can get...
