Introduction: The aim of this article is to summarize information about photoselective vaporization of prostate (PVP) and compare results of this treatment to the gold standard of surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia -- transurethral resection of prostate. Methods: All publications connected with mesh terms „photoselective vaporization prostate" were searched on the Medline database. This review is based on these publications and on our experiences with PVP. Results: PVP significantly improves the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Complications associated with PVP are fewer than with transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). Time of catheterization and hospitalization after PVP is shorter than after TURP. Longterm results of PVP are not available yet. Conclusion: Short and mid-term results of PVP and TURP are comparable, there are fewer complications with PVP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
