The paper gives an analysis of four Zagreb squares by contextualizing the concept of urban icons in three Croatian modernization periods. Emphasising the contrast between two successive political regimes, the author offers an interpretation of public spaces in the city where architectural elements, public sculpture and degree of participation point to identity (re)structuring. Creation of urban icons reveals intentional activities of various social groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
The paper deals with residents' attitudes to the features of urban planning in the Špansko-Oranice estate. The work was based on an empirical research with the use of questionnaires in collecting residents' opinions. The residents were asked about the estate features relating to construction, ancillary and public facilities, pedestrian zones, parks, and traffic. The research determined residents' contentment with planners' decisions that marked the features of their estate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract
Prof. Vrkljan's architectural accomplishment presented in the paper is one of the most illustrative examples that contribute to the hypothesis that education buildings were in the interwar period one of the facilitators of urban development of Zagreb in its peripheral areas. With its public use, modern design, large scale and urban disposition of its parts, the building of the Grammar School for Women anticipated and predicated the urbanisation of the Zagreb Quarter Trnje and Vukovar Street, which occurred after 1945.
