Over the past decades, anthropogenic disturbance of geological structures has been significantly documented in Slovakia, mainly driven by the national economy’s demand for mining resources. Among these resources, brown coal, primarily mined in the Upper Nitra coal basin in the Prievidza district (Slovakia), has been essential. Mining activities around town of Handlová, and villages of Koš, Cígeľ and Sebedražie, particularly at the Cígeľ coal mine, have induced several geological defects. These defects, characterised by large cracks and local landslides, disrupt the hydrogeological conditions, significantly impacting the soil water regime stability of the forest ecosystems in these damaged areas. This study investigates the variability and dynamics of the soil water potential in a mining-affected site (Račkov laz) compared to an intact reference area (Čertove chodníky) between 2020 and 2022. Our findings suggest that mining activities could have substantial implications for the soil water regime and, consequently, the ecological stability of forest ecosystems.

Rozdíl mezi výsledkem manažerského propočtu a skutečností lze do velké míry přičíst na vrub neurčitosti. V případě diskontované doby návratnosti (DPP) může jít o nejisté vstupy na úrovni investičních výdajů, cash flow a diskontní sazby. S tímto se lze částečně vyrovnat tím, že místo neurčitých bodových hodnot se vychází z intervalů možných hodnot. Metodologicky je toto řešeno definováním významných bodů vstupních parametrů pro výpočet DPP a z nich odvozených významných bodů intervalu fuzzy doby návratnosti (FPP) ve smyslu trojúhelníkových fuzzy čísel (TFN). Pro klasifikaci TFN je použita vážená metoda. Početní formule FPP se tím stává flexibilní z hlediska vyjádření víry v míru incidence vstupních dat v závislosti na aktuálně dostupných informacích, znalostech a zkušenostech hodnotitele. Dosavadní literatura tento aspekt pomíjí. Prakticky jsou dané vztahy aplikovány na vyčíslení intervalového odhadu FPP, který je parametrem pro zhodnocení investičního záměru modernizace hnědouhelné elektrárny.

Multifocal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) may result in extensive bowel necrosis and short bowel syndrome. Authors present case report of premature newborn (BW 1700 g, gestational age 30 w.) where an extensive multisegmental NEC of small and large intestine was found during first explorative laparotomy. Proximal jejunostomy 28 cm beyond ligament of Treitz was performed and the rest of involved intestine was left in situ. After 48 hours multiple small bowel resections were performed leaving 12 cm of small intestine (5 short segments) distal to the jejunostomy. Five approximative anastomoses were performed to restore continuity among these segments and ileocaecal valve. Each of approximative anastomosis was constructed with limited number of 4-6 interrupted stitches and all anastomoses healed without complication. Intestinal continuity between proximal jejunostomy and the reconstructed segment of ileum was reestablished nine weeks later. Total length of small bowel was 50 cm. The patient was discharged at the age of 5 months weighing 4145 g with supplemental pareneteral nutrition. The technique of rapid approximative anastomosis may contribute to save maximal intestinal length in cases with the risk of short bowel syndrome.

Objective: To analyse the incidence of serious complications in neonates with birth weight lower than 1,500 g in the Czech Republic in the years 2000-2002., Design: A retrospective epidemiological study., Methods: Frequency analysis of the data from the National Register of Neonates, administrated by the Institute of Health Information and Statistics of the Czech Republic., Results: The incidence of PIVH of level III-IV in neonates with weight of up to 1,500 g in the Czech Republic in the years 2000-2002 was 6.8-10.3%; the incidence of cPVL reached 6.4-7.6%; the incidence of ROP of level III and of a higher level was 6.6-7.9% and the incidence of NEC was between 4.3 and 5.7% of all live births. Among the surviving neonates, the percentages of those who did not have any of the PIVH, ROP, HIE or meningitis diagnoses in the reference period were as follows (according to their birth weights): 500-749g 50-63.8%; 750-999 g 69.7-74.8%; 1,000-1,499 g 86.8-91.4%; 1,500-1,999g 98-98.2%; 2,000-2,499 g 99.4-99.5%; and in the group with weight above 2,500g, the percentage was 99.9%., Conclusion: The incidence of serious complications in neonates with birth weight of up to 1,500 g in the Czech Republic in the years 2000-2002 was comparable with the data stated in the literature, except for cPVL, the incidence of which was higher in the Czech Republic. The proportion of neonates, who were released and did not have any of the complications, which pose a risk to normal neurosensory development, does not virtually change for birth weights higher than 1,500 g and reaches 98 and more percent. However, among the surviving neonates with birth weight of up to 750, their proportion is mere 50-64%.

Objective: Nosocomial infections caused by the coagulase-negative staphylococci are among the most frequent complications in an intensive care unit for neonates. The authors describe three cases of successful treatment of this complication in which the new antibiotic Linezolide was used., Design: Analysis of three clinical cases., Setting: Mother and Child Care Institute, Prague., Methods: Description of cases of nosocomial sepsis in 3 immature neonates where the usual treatment of multiresistant strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci, based on the use of Vankomycin, was not successful., Conclusion: Administration of Linezolide proved to be very effective in all of the described cases. In spite of the high effectiveness and relative safety of this preparation, its precise role in the treatment of infection-related complications caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci has not yet been established. For the time being, we recommend administering this preparation only in strictly indicated cases after the usual therapy fails.

Multiple toes may develop on the medial or lateral side of the forefoot or in its middle. This may involve duplication of only the distal phalanx or the whole hallux including the metatarsal. In a duplicated big toe, the phalanx to be maintained, because short muscles of the leg are attached to it, is usually localized medially. A rare case of dysplasia of the first metatarsus, following a resection indicated in childhood for a hallux triples, is described in a 20-year-old girl. In order to remove hallux insufficiency and an overloading of the middle metatarsals, the authors decided to carry out a one-stage prolongation of the first metatarsal, using an autologous tricorticcal graft collected from the pelvis and a dynamic compression plate. No surgical treatment of the middle metatarsals was indicated because a disproportionate, short foot would result. Both the subjective and objective status of the patient at 6 months after the operation showed that the non-standard prolongation procedure was correctly indicated and allowed for physiological loading of the foot and restoration of normal walking.

A case report of a patient with tubal infertility treated by in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer (IVF + ET) of 4 embryos is described. The patient presented with vaginal bleeding and lower abdominal pain and during emergency laparoscopy tubal heterotopic pregnancy was eliminated. The patient did well till term and delivered a 3450 g and 50 cm newborn with congenital valvular pulmonal artery stenosis. The incidence and treatment options of heterotopic pregnancies and influences of foetal outcome concerning congenital anomalies are discussed.

Occupational environment monitoring and biological-medical monitoring of persons professionally exposed to welding fumes have been performed. Chromium, manganese and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in welding fumes represents an important health risk. Pollutant concentrations found in metal welding fumes represented only fractions of those acceptable ones. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have been reached the concentration found in a busy road crossing in Hradec Králové (compared with these as in Czech Republic no maximum acceptable levels for PAHs having been declared). Family, personal and occupational history have been taken. Health state including total haematological count, biochemical and cytogenetical changes of 19 stainless steel welders were checked-up. The level of mercapturates in urine were examined as well. The data were statistically compared with those of non exposed (control group). No changes witnessing the above mentioned risk factors influence on the haematological, biochemical and cytogenetical findings were ever proved. In conclusion, our results did not confirm an increased professional risk in this group of welders.

Biological monitoring of occupational exposure to toxic compounds enables an early detection of adverse health effects. Apart from the standard biological monitoring methods of occupational exposure represented by metabolites and enzymes activities analysis also immunological detection methods seem to be promising. The changes of immunological system are demonstrable extraordinary sensitive markers of load of organism. The process of welding belongs between important sources of pollution of working environment with heavy metals and other harmful compounds including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. According to IARC classification the welding fumes are included into group 2B and are supposed as possible human carcinogens. Numbers of different epidemiological studies have proved relationship between welding and serious health disorders namely malignancies. We recorded a number of changes in immunological parameters when compared with those in control group in our study. The results of analysis were statistically evaluated. The statistically significant reduction of number of phagocytosis capable cells was found in the group of welders when compared with the control group. The levels of neopterin, beta-2-microglobulin and IL-1 beta have indirectly monitored cell component of immunological response. In the case of these markers a statistically significant increases were found in the group of welders. We found statistically significant IgM decrease and statistically significant IgA increase in humoral responses with the same group when compared with control group.

The paper is concerned with formulation studies of the transdermal therapeutic system of the matrix type with beta-adrenolytic drug metoprolol. The base of the hydrophobic matrix is the biocompatible polymer-silicone rubber, and the hydrophilic matrix was prepared from the polyacrylate polymer of the Eudragit type. The properties of the silicone matrix were modified by the additive Methocel F 4M, macrogol 600, copolymer p (HEMA) with methacrylic acid and polyacrylamide. The matrices were evaluated on the basis of the results of in vitro liberation of the drug at 32 degrees C. The liberation profiles of metoprolol were evaluated by means of the parameters of Tornquist hyperbolic function calculated by nonlinear regression. Of the composite ingredients of the silicone matrix, Methocel F 4M proved to be the best. Metoprolol was released most from the hydrophilic matrix prepared from Eudragit NE 30D. It released 12.32 mg.cm(-2).24 h-1 of metoprolol.

Out of six isolates of coccidia of the species Eimeria tenella, obtained in the years 1984 and 1985 on farms with a stationary occurrence of coccidiosis, five were found to have reduced sensitivity or resistance to monensin. Neither were these isolates sensitive to further monovalent ionophorous anticoccidials narasin and salinomycin. The bivalent ionophorous anticoccidial lasalocid controlled five isolates completely, but for one its effectiveness was reduced. An isolate obtained on a farm with long-term absence of coccidiosis was sensitive to all anticoccidial drugs.
