In last decades, there is increasing empirical evidence on the significant links between religiosity/ spirituality (R/S) and health. Empirical findings have identified both religiosity and spirituality as a potential health resources and have stimulated interest within psychology on the role of these fenomena in physical and mental health. The present review provides examination of this field of research and adresses some related methodological and conceptual issues. Special attention is paid to the definitions and development of the two concepts (religiosity/ spirituality), the development of measurement, epidemiological evidence linking R/S to morbidity, mortality and mental health and issue of causality and possible psychological mediators or moderators of R/S on health outcomes. Particular focus of this review concerns with the issue how specific factors influence health outcomes. Although the majority of studies report positive association between measures of religiosity/ spirituality and overall health via physiological, psychological, social and behavioral mechanisms, contradicting findings are common and two or more opposing conclusion are not rare. The relation between variables appears far more complex. Which specific R/S factors enhance health and well-being remains unclear. The study discusses what mechanisms might explain a relation and what might be possible diference in these associations between members of various demografical, cultural and religious groups. Last it concerns with construct spirituality as usefull and clinically relevant approach in medical settings. For the future research the need to improve research designs and measurement as well as to clarify conceptualizations of religious and spiritual factors remains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overview study brings closer one of possible solutions of complicated relation of psychological research to psychological practice, the approach called evidence-based psychology. It is inspired by the analogical effort in medicine but in psychology it gains specific nuances. The study mentions the historical roots, the birth, and the contemporary form of evidence-based medicine. It shows how this approach inspired one by one the particular psychological fields on the example of American Psychological Association. Different levels of application are characterized, starting by evidence-based policy to empirically based intervention. Most attention is paid to evidence- based psychological practice. Referring to the work of Hoagwood and Johnson it brings closer five emerging approaches: 1. The academic approach, 2. Empirically validated approach,3. Evidence-based therapy, 4. Multidisciplinary approach, 5. School psychological approach. Two of three components of evidence-based practice are analyzed in detail: research evidence and psychologist's expertise. In the conclusion, weak points and problems emerging during the application of evidence-based psychology are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper describes the design, realization, and results of prospectively designed two-wave study the goal of which was to verify the potential connections of burnout, selected psychosocial characteristics and main known risks of cardiovascular diseases in the sample of economicaly active Czech men and women. A part of the project was the intervention oriented to lower the incidence of risk factors of cardiovascular diseases and burnout syndrome. The next aim of the project was to assess the influence of education in subjects on decreasing the risks of cardiovascular diseases (and burnout). The sample (78 persons, 64 women, 14 men; mean age 48,4; SD 11,6; minimum age 22, maximum age 67) was acquired by addressing the Czech and abroad firms, companies, and institutions. The changes in biochemical variables due to the intervention, the decrease of global cholesterol and LDL cholesterol can be considered as a very positive finding. The changes in psychological variables can also be considered as favourable: A set of risk characteristics decreased and the level of perceived social support that represents the protective factor increased. The results imply that the lipids concentration and its metabolism are relatively very sensitive to personality and psychosocial characteristics that can be generally considered as risky for health. The particular variables came out as predictors less often than factors that represented several variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cognitive deficit presents a significant problem affecting the life of schizophrenia patients. Despite the variability of the deficit, which influences almost all cognitive domains, the most profound seems to be deficit in memory and executive functioning with direct impact on daily functioning of patients with schizophrenia. As the pharmacologic interventions do not seem to bring satisfying results, the cognitive remediation seems to bet the most effective way of intervention of the deficit. Efficacy of cognitive remediation approach was repeatedly confirmed on the level of structural and functional changes of the brain. Nevertheless, often discussed are the issues of ecological validity of cognitive remediation and its controversial ability of transfer of acquired abilities and skills into the real life. In this work, we present development of a new method potentially applicable in the remediation of deficit of declarative memory in schizophrenia patients designed in ecologically valid environment of virtual supermarket. In the first two pilot studies, we tested the functionality of the task in the healthy volunteers and we compared their performance in the virtual task with the results in standard psychological memory tests. After considering the findings from the pilot studies, we verified the...

Successful aging is increasingly topical issue given the rapidly aging population and it is therefore crucial to deal with the way the old people adapt to the coming age, and whether there is some way we can be prepared for it. Model coping with life's problems - selection, optimization and compensation is a lifelong adaptation strategy, which currently in old age leads to successful aging. Besides adaptation are important attitudes towards aging and old age, that have an impact on senior's self-esteem. The main goal of this thesis was to analyze attitudes towards age and the use of model coping with life problems in a sample of younger and older Czech seniors using questionnaires SOC and AAQ. The research had a qualitative aspect, which focused on mapping the topic of retirement planning and strategies for successful aging. It turned out that the younger and older seniors differ from each other only in the use of the strategy chosen selection, in other strategies there was no difference between age groups. In the area of attitudes to each other, age groups also did not differ. The results also show that between using SOC strategies and their own attitude to old age, there is no relationship. This research study focuses on the connection between types of attachment (levels of anxiety and avoidance in a relationship) and drug addiction. We researched the levels of anxiety and avoidance in drug addicted patients in their relationships with their mothers and fathers, romantic partners and best friends and compared them with the levels of anxiety and avoidance in informants from a control group who were not addicted to drugs. We examined an experimental group of 103 addicted patients receiving treatment in a therapeutic community and 105 informants in a control group. The results of the research confirmed the hypothesis that drug addicted patients manifest significantly higher levels of anxiety and avoidance in relationships with mothers, fathers, romantic partners and best friends in comparison with the control group informants not addicted to drugs. Although the differences in all areas were substantial, illustrating the attachment typology proved to be problematic. While dividing the responses into quadrants does not consider natural variations of the responses, they were taken into account in both of the mentioned scales. We concluded that, in general, the addicted patients in the experimental group had distinctly lower scores in the security of the attachment to their mothers and...

Mgr. Zuzana Bílková Key mental features of the members of the armed forces for coping with conditions of high risk of losing one's life: Importance of social support among soldiers of the ISAF mission Abstract This thesis focuses on the topic of social support among soldiers in the ISAF mission. It was supposed that army environment is very specific in the area of social relationships in particular and so in the area of social support. Military mission is very demanding - soldiers face a real danger of their lives, they are limited in contact with their families, in the way of spending their free time. Therefore, some soldiers suffer from mental problems when they came back. This thesis examines a potential contribution of social support during the mission and deals with the question whether social support can help soldiers to cope with it. The theoretical part summarizes three main topics - the specificity of the army environment, stress and its impact to health and performance, and social support. Different approaches towards social support, methodological difficulties, positive and negative outcomes of social support are presented. Approach of the author Eric Sonderen was used in the empirical part (Sonderen, 1991, 2012a). The empirical part presents a combine-designed survey. Semi-structured in-depth...

The thesis deals with the relationship between one's time perspective and their ability to cope with the termination of the relationship. The time perspective is composed of five temporal orientations - past positive, past negative, present hedonistic, present fatalistic and future - which differ from each other in personality characteristics and their influence on human behavior. Our aim was to explore the differences among them in the choice of coping strategies in dealing with a breakup and verify the hypothesis. The following methods were used in the research: Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI), questions concerning respondent's breakup and Brief COPE, which measured a total of 14 coping strategies on a sample of 237 respondents. The results confirmed the different choices of coping strategies among five time orientations. Although it was not proved that some temporal orientations (past negative) would cope with the breakup more problematically, it seems, however, that these ones mostly use maladaptive coping strategies which can make their breakup adjustment harder. In the conclusion, therefore, are also considered the possibilities of application of our results in psychological counseling practice. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

This thesis is focused on the effects of computerized executive functions training on emotion regulation and affective functioning. The theoretical part summarizes cognition-emotion integration and is based on cognitive neuroscience models suggesting that there are bidirectional links between cortical executive functions centers and cortical centers that regulate emotions. Based on process model of emotion regulation (Gross, 1998) it's supposed that it is possible to make interventions of emotion dysregulation also through cognitive, antecedent-focused strategies. These assumptions are linked with computerized executive functions training. Such training might have positive consequences for emotion regulation and emotion functioning, as it generate frontal activation (Klinberg et al., 2005). The study measures the potential effect of executive functions training on regulation of negative emotions. The main intervention is a personalized, computer-based cognitive training program BrainTwister. This program is widely used for clinical and diagnostics praxis and rehabilitation. To ascertain the everyday ecological validity of the cognitive training intervention and the emotion regulatory and affective consequences, emotion regulatory experiment (IAPS) together with mood and emotion regulation...

This master's thesis deals with the topic of decision making when choosing a partner in romantic relationships. It reacts to the phenomenon of looking for a partner via internet dating sites and tries to determine whether the requirements we have for an ideal partner correspond to the real-life selection of a romantic partner. In the theoretical part studies and theoretical concepts concerning romantic partnership are presented - selection of a partner as well as relationship maintenance. The thesis is based on evolutionary-psychological theories (Buss, 1989), experience of partner counselors and theoretical concepts of social psychologists, such as triangular theory of love (Sternberg, 1986) or five love languages (Chapman, 2002). In the decision making area, the thesis relies primarily on Kahneman's (2013) two systems within the dual process theory. The empirical part poses the question whether we spot differences between the preferred characteristics of ideal partner and the subjectively evaluated characteristics of the person who we are attracted to at a real-life meeting, motivated to potentially establish a romantic relationship. In my research, most of the observed aspects showed significant references. The target group were Czech university students who participated in speed dating event...

This thesis is concerned with the phenomenon of burnout in university teachers, who have been previously rather neglected in connection with this topic. The theoretical part provides an analysis of current knowledge regarding the development of the concept of burnout from the very early interest in this issue in the 1970s to the present, with emphasis being placed on the teaching profession, especially in the tertiary education sector. In the empirical part of the research, the assumption of different levels of burnout in university teachers in the former Eastern Bloc and Western European country was tested. This international study compares the burnout level in teachers from the philosophy faculties of Czech Charles University and German Universität Regensburg. In order to achieve a more holistic view of this topic, the levels of life engagement and depression have been studied as well. The data were collected with the help of Copenhagen Burnout Inventory, Life Engagement Test, Beck Depression Inventory and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Basic research assumption predicting differences in levels of burnout, life engagement and depression in Czech and German university teachers was confirmed in only one burnout subscale, namely the subscale of student-related burnout. Quality of Life of Women during Pregnancy Introduction: Our research of quality of life went the way of investigation of general questions (comparison of countries, regions; comparisons of influences of various illnesses and different ways of treatment on the quality of life) mainly at the group of adult people. Problem of the quality of life, not paid so much attention so far (both in our country and abroad), is the quality of life of healthy women during their physiological pregnancy. So far only the interest in the quality of life of women during their high-risk pregnancy prevailed. Objective: This dissertation tries to find answers to questions how a pregnant woman will specify and evaluate her quality of life; which variables will influence her quality of life during physiological pregnancy? Will the quality of life of pregnant women be comparable to that of healthy nonpregnant women and how will the quality of life change in time, during pregnancy? Methods: Longitudinal prospective and retrospective research was used. In this research qualitative and quantitative methods were combined in the context with objectives. For the qualitative stage of the research we opted for the method of discussion in focus groups. And we made a choice of two questionnaires for the quantitative stage: generic...

This dissertation thesis addresses the area of spatial navigation of the blind. The author theoretically deals with a complex interplay of psychological functions involved in spatial navigation with respect to the specific conditions of the blind. The empirical part of the thesis presents an experimental study in the population of the blind (N=44). This study focuses on effects of the stress recovery phase from shortly increased stress levels on the process of learning a new route. The experiment is placed in real-world settings and overcomes some of the methodological flaws typical for this research domain. The research evidence suggests that the recovery phase from shortly increased stress levels hinders the development of procedural knowledge of the route. However, this deterioration in route knowledge is not associated with the effects of the strsss phase itself, but affects only the recovery phase part of the route in which stress levels are returning to their original baseline levels (not necessarily the level of the resting conditions). Besides its theoretical conclusions, the value of the presented thesis is in its contribution to the advancements of research methods in the given field. The outcomes of this work are practically applicable to the development of navigation aids for the blind....

The bachelor thesis deals with volition, will traits and self-education of students. Volition is understood as a synthetic function of personality, evolutionary highest function of self-regulation and a limited cognitive source. Will traits are considered an outer manifestation of will, self-education (especially its Czech equivalent) is considered an outdated term that is being replaced by similar topics of research such as procrastination. Several philosophical and psychological concepts of will and self-regulation are outlined. Author concieves much of them similar, suggesting emotional, impulsive system (thymos, id, hot system) is usually put opposite to a rational system (logos, ego, cool system). Succesful self-regulation is therefore based on an ability to master the emomotional, hot system. Another part of the paper deals specifically with self-education and variables that are affecting it (individual traits, motives, time and stress, role of a teacher and group). Several methods of self-education are described: self-discovery, formulation of educational goals, precommitment, implementation intention, creating of a habit, reaching flow. The presented diploma thesis summarizes development of well-being and socioeconomic status conceptions by analyzing accesible vocational literature. The theoretical part is mainly focused on well-being and socioeconomic status (SES) in context and on searching for satisfactory explanation of relationship of those two variables. The attention in empirical part is devoted to examination the dependancy relationship between well-being and SES. We use Satisfaction with life scale (Diener et al., 1985) and The Ryff's scales of psychological well-being (Ryff, 1989) for measuring well-being. Socioeconomic status is deduced from income, education and occupational prestige. The existence of the dependancy relationship between income and well-being measured by RPWB was proven in our research sample (includes 213 respondents). The statistically significant differences between well-being (SWLS) were measured within group of people with elementary and high school education; and further within group of people with the lowest and highest income. However the relationship is sophistically structured and variety of dependent conditions is used rather than simple positive correlation. This work is based on the assumption that religiosity, and spirituality can, together with other salutoprotective factors, influence physical and psychological health and personal well- being. The theoretical and empirical part come out of bio-psycho-social conception of health in relation to spiritual dimension understood as person's orientation towards the values of meaning and spirituality. In the theoretical part of the work we dealt with the definition and development of constructs of quality of life, personal well being, religiosity/spirituality, and other variables like social support, gratitude, sense of coherence, the locus of control, meaningfulness, lifestyle, which are connected to the main constructs. The work deals with the questions of measuring, epidemiological and overview studies, questions of relationship causality and hypothesis of possible psychological mediators functioning in complex relations on multiple levels of generality. The constructs of subjective quality of life, and religiosity/spirituality were operationalized as multidimensional variables. Abroad, majority of studies showed positive associations between measuring of R/S and the overall health; however, contradicting results of measuring were not rare. The relation between variables appears to be a lot more complex...

Patients with chronic kidney failure, given that it is impossible to undergo transplantation, have to be treated by lifelong hemodialysis (HD) via extracorporeal circulation machine 3 times a week in hospital; or by peritoneal dialysis (PD) performed by patients at home. There were a number of studies comparing quality of life between HD and PD, but there have been fewer studies covering other psychological variables. The aim of this study was to examine whether HD and PD patients differ in social support, locus of control, coping and depressive symptoms. 143 HD patients (average age 65,56; 48,3 % men, 51,3 % women) and 48 PD patients (average age 63,79; 66,7 % men, 33,3 % women) were approached by random selection. Social Integration Survey (SIS) was applied to examine social support. Locus of control was depicted on visual analog scale. Coping strategies were mapped by a short version of COPE questionnaire - Brief COPE, which was translated to Czech language for this purpose. Beck's depression inventory (BDI - II) was used to evaluate incidence of depressive symptoms. Based on data statistical analysis there was no difference proved in social support, coping strategies, locus of control and depressive symptoms among HD and PD patients.
