The diploma thesis is concerned with content and language integrated learning, the CLIL method. The thesis is specifically focused on English language teaching in primary education. The theoretical part contents an introduction of the CLIL methodology, its history and specifics, including the aims, activities or materials in CLIL lessons. The thesis also focuses on what the application of this method looks like in chosen European countries, including the Czech Republic. Specifically, in the case of the Czech Republic, the thesis lists information related to CLIL teachers, the organization of CLIL classes, or CLIL projects that have taken place in the territory over the past years. The aim of the practical part is to describe how the method is applied in chosen Czech primary schools and how it is viewed by teachers and pupils in terms of its attractiveness and effectiveness. The research is designed as a multiple case study with the usage of observations of CLIL lessons and interviews with CLIL teachers and pupils at three primary schools in Prague. The result of the practical part is an analysis of the interviews and the author's observations of the CLIL lessons, completed by a summary of the findings from all the parts of the research altogether. These findings are then compared in the final...

The paper aims to describe the effects of a unique combination of high autonomy and low outcome accountability of the Czech schools. First, the paper outlines test-based accountability as a key concept of contemporary educational policy. Next, the research design is briefly described and the qualitative data on the effects of school choice and curriculum autonomy / decentralisation are presented. The discussion stresses the problem of time frame in evaluating system wide interventions and also sketches a vision of new emerging school reform discourse. Processes of change in five Czech “combined” primary and lower secondary schools were studied by qualitative longitudinal multiple case study for over 5 years. Surprisingly, the results suggest that many negative effects ascribed to the highstakes tests (e. g. curriculum narrowing, fabrication of image) could be seen in the studied schools despite the different model of governance in the Czech Republic. The contemporary discussion of risks of (high stake) testing should be complemented by a similar analysis of both costs and negative effects of the absence of outcome accountability.

The dissertation focuses on the parental attitudes about education of their children during transition from pre-primary to primary education. The study focused on families without identified socio-economic disadvantage whose children were not enrolled in kindergarten. The research design was a longitudinal multiple case study of seven families located in the Liberec region. Data was gathered at multiple points during the children's transition from the kindergarten to primary school. The study focused on the reasons that led parents gave for deciding that their children would either participate in non-regular pre-primary education within nursery schools or not attend the pre-primary classes at all. The study inquired about: parents' general attitudes about pre-primary education; their views on the right educational path for their children; and their self-reported approach to their children's overall development. The study also examined the parents' feelings about the introduction of an obligatory pre-school year and their process of making the enrollment decisions. The results showed that although these families did have some common characteristics, the reasons given for opting not let their children attend preschool, were diverse. Mothers of these children were passionate about doing what's best...

Nomads of Educational System Multiple Case Study of School Mobility of Pupils Jan Vyhnálek Abstract The thesis explores school mobility - "students making nonpromotional school changes" (Rumberger, 2003), in the Czech Republic through qualitative multiple case study. It begins with a review of the most significant empirical studies in school mobility (1991-2016), highlighting a gap in research into the causes and processes of pupils' transitions and the need for qualitative research. To contribute to filling this gap, two cases of transfers following the transition from primary to lower secondary school and one case of attempts to integrate a child with cerebral palsy into mainstream schooling were explored as a "social and relational construction" (Zamora & Moforte, 2013, p. 59). The core of the thesis is an analysis of data based on in-depth, semi-structured interviews conducted with parents, pupils, teachers, school principals and external experts, field notes and documents providing three analytical narrations of these transitions. Rich use of data segments allows naturalistic generalisation. The analysis features the role of communication between school and family, the role of engaged parents, school tracking, school climate, social stigmatization of pupils and families, and stress on academic outcomes...

Although the bachelor thesis was originally intended to deal with the use of tablets in primary schools, after the pre-research, it was amended to address the use of tablets in secondary schools. The pre-research has shown that tablets in primary schools are rarely used, so it would not be possible to collect sufficient data to create a scientific work. Therefore, i could not make any relevant statistical conclusions, so i focused my research on secondary school. The work was conducted using a multiple case study based on semi-structured in-depth interviews. The interviews were then thoroughly analysed. Interviewed students enjoy learning with tablets, they find them more entertaining, individualized and faster. Teachers find the use of tablets beneficial and useful. There are used many types of applications for teaching with tablets in secondary schools, for example application for quiz repetition, application replacing atlas or periodic table of elements, mathematical applications and applications in which we can find electronic versions of textbooks. There were also identified problems in schools using tablets for teaching, these problems are the insufficient Wi-Fi connection, students violating the set rules, and decreasing performance of mobile devices because of their age.

DRTINOVÁ, Simona. Learning the Czech language in retirement age. Prague, 2013. Dissertation. Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Arts, Institute of Czech Language and Theory of Communication. The end of the theoretical part addresses the offer of Czech language courses. All the parts of the thesis first address the topic on a general level and then focus on seniors. The empirical part of this thesis attempts to...
