Several factors have the potential to influence the consumption of medicine, including the reimbursement status. Examples of consumption patterns are compared to reimbursement status over time. In some situations the reimbursement status and changes herein may be a contributing factor for the consumption pattern, e.g. in the case of the selective COX-2 inhibitors. In other situations, the opposite is the case, e.g. medicinal products used for the treatment of hypertension, where there is under-treatment despite the fact that general reimbursement has existed for a number of years. General conclusions are therefore not possible.
