The paper presents the results of a study on the audition of a Dutch tense vowel [e:] and the diphthong [ɛi] by Polish native speakers. It was hypothesized that Polish native speakers may pronounce the Dutch [e:] as a combination of [ɛ] and [j] because they generally fail to distinguish the [e:] from the diphthong [ɛi], as both sounds lie acoustically close to each other (especially those produced by speakers of Dutch from the Netherlands); moreover, they are absent from the Polish phonetic system. Instead, the experiment has shown that Polish native speakers are very good at differentiating the isolated Dutch [e:] and [ɛi]. It seems that the pronunciation of the Dutch [e:] as a combination of [ɛ] and [j] is rather a matter of articulation than audition, but further experiments are needed to examine the problem. There is a growing trend in the scientific world to publish papers in English. Describing research in the field of technology or medicine in English is justified, because it allows for faster verification of results and their application by scientists in any part of the world, and thus their faster use by ordinary people. It is questionable, however, whether it makes sense to write about a language - especially one as small as Dutch - in the language of Shakespeare. This paper focuses on minimizing strategies in present-day Netherlandic Dutch. The minimizing construction under investigation consists of (1) an element of negation (geen); (2) a predicate and (3) a minimizer, a noun that denotes a small quantity and that is used to reinforce sentential negation (e.g. geen woord begrijpen ‘to understand not a word’). First, we situate the minimizing construction in relation to other, pragmatic minimizing strategies. Then, we provide a semantic typology of the minimizers in our dataset. Moreover, we give an overview of the different strategies that are available to extend the slot of the minimizer, such as analogical and context-based extensions. Foreigner Talk refers to a repertoire of linguistic and non-verbal strategies that a language community regards as appropriate in interactions with less proficient L2 speakers. Such adaptations often include the use of hand gestures, as illustrated by different communication guidelines. However, research on gestures in Foreigner Talk has almost exclusively focused their ability to illustrate concrete actions and objects, limiting our understanding of how more abstract gestures can be helpful in interactions with L2 speakers. In this paper, we propose a qualitative analysis of gestures in four excerpts from a corpus of semi-spontaneous conversations between L1 and L2 speakers and we highlight gestures that motivate their meaning at different degrees of abstraction. In Enlightenment Europe multilingualism was an omnipresent fact. Even the correspondences of eighteenth-century writers gave clear evidence of – often strategically chosen – forms of multilingualism. Up until today, the question arises as to why early modern writers used (various forms of) multilingualism in their letters. This paper investigates, for the first time, the hypothesis that early modern writers used multilingualism in their letter writing as a strategy for intellectual and authorial self-fashioning. To that end, it explores the multilingual dimensions of two women writers’ correspondences. Studying the way in which Marie-Jeanne Riccoboni (1713-1792) and Isabelle de Charrière (1740- 1805) actively (re)shaped their intellectual authority and authorial identity by means of multilingualism will prove to provide an excellent stepping stone towards more (comparative) research on the forms and functions of multilingualism in the (life) writing of eighteenth-century male and female writers. Cappadocian is an extremely endangered Greek dialect that was spoken in Central Turkey until the Greek-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923-1924. This involuntary emigration to Greece caused the near-extinction of this dialect. Nowadays the number of Cappadocian speakers and semi-speakers has decreased to approximately 2,800. Fortunately this very remarkable dialect, which was thoroughly influenced by the Turkish language, has been captured in many orally transmitted folktales that were recorded by philologists and dialectologists from the nineteenth century onwards. This paper presents a critical edition of a hitherto unpublished folktale: ‘The Shepherd’, a very short story in the Cappadocian subdialect of the village of Axo, recorded by Richard M. Dawkins. The edition is followed by a Dutch translation of ‘The Shepherd’ and a folkloristic discussion on its origin. This folktale is most likely one of the numerous versions of the story about the one-eyed giant, the Cyclops, best known from its variant in Homer’s Odyssey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the two 'international' or ecumenical associations of athletes and artists in the Roman empire, the so-called xystic and thymelic synods. These associations played a key role in the world of Greek competitive festivals (agones). They not only provided practical assistance to their members and protected their professional and economic interests, they also contributed to the organisation of the competitions and supported the central authorities in keeping up an official festival calendar. Hence, they were not merely a side effect of the expansion of Greek festivals across the Roman empire, they were an important factor in making this expansion possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper I point out remarkable similarities between the Orestes myth and the Arabic story of al-Zir. In addition to the parallels adduced by the Egyptian critic Louis 'Awad (1968) and in my earlier study 'Blood on the Wedding Bed' (2017), I argue here that the killing of a she-camel which ignited the Arabic Basus War is a parallel to Agamemnon's killing of a sacred deer on the eve of the Trojan War. I propose five criteria to distinguish between weak and strong parallels, and argue that there are not only similarities between single episodes from the Orestes myth and the story of al-Zir, but that the main plot line of both stories is also conspicuously similar. Both Dutch and (West) Frisian make use of the exclamative particle wat ('how'), that adds an element of surprise about a high degree of something to the semantics of the sentence. In this paper I will first show the similarities between the use of the particle in the two languages. I will demonstrate that, in Dutch, its use is largely confined to constructions that are semantically scalable, whereas in Frisian this restriction is far less strict. I will explain the difference by showing that Dutch wat is a syntactic amplifier of lexical phrases, whereas Frisian wat has developed into a pragmatic amplifier of the core predicate. I will try to account for that difference by showing how homophonous words absent in Dutch are likely to have influenced the use of Frisian wat, and how Dutch prosody strengthens the connection between wat and the amplified lexical phrase, whereas Frisian prosody weakens it. The legitimacy of climate policy is a necessary condition for the broad acceptance of government interventions and civic participation. News media are an important source of information for public perceptions and beliefs concerning climate change and climate policy, which people will use to grant or deny legitimacy. In this article we apply the theoretical perspective of media framing to analyse Dutch newspaper coverage of climate change and climate policy during April and May 2019, by means of systematic manual content analysis. We use these empirical findings to further reflect on their potential significance for policy legitimacy as experienced by their readership. Overall, the newspapers pay little attention to climate change as a contested phenomenon and to humanity's contribution to its cause and solution. In the fight to reduce CO2-emission, the Dutch government is portrayed as the principal agent. The responsibility of individual citizens is less often highlighted. Hence, newspaper coverage does not seem to challenge the fight against climate change as a legitimate policy goal. It does, however, pay ample attention to specific policy interventions to reduce CO2-emission and the controversies that surround them. In line with, or as a reflection of these findings, differences within public opinion are to be expected concerning the legitimacy of policy interventions, both with regard to their desirability on paper (input) and their actual (side) effects (output). The transition to a fossil fuel free society is expected to affect the way we live considerably. As part of Dutch Climate Agreement (Klimaatakkoord) which aims to reduce CO2 emissions, the Dutch government has expressed the ambition to gradually move towards a 'natural-gas-free' built environment in 2050. This decision will eventually affect all citizens in the Netherlands, both home owners and tenants. In this paper we study the extent of public support for this policy ambition. We aim to unravel differences between groups, and factors explaining those differences. Data were collected in the LISS-panel, with an online questionnaire, in May 2019 (Verkenning Energietransitie 2019; VET'19). We performed data analyses in this large population study of Dutch residents, using structural equation modeling (SEM). Results show significant differences by financial position, education, age, and gender, with higher support in those financially better off, with a higher level of education, younger adults (18-34 years), and women. The (extended) pragma-dialectical argumentation theory assumes that people engaged in argumentative discourse manoeuvre strategically. In argumentative reality, the strategic manoeuvring is carried out within specific argumentative activity types. In this paper it is argued that pragma-dialectics offers a fruitful approach to study political debate. The approach and its added value are discussed and illustrated on the basis of a specific type of political debate in a specific argumentative activity type: the plenary debate in the Second Chamber of Dutch Parliament. -- The so-called refugee crisis has triggered manifold responses in the field of European art and literature. This paper discusses two works by the Dutch writer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer as examples of Dutch 'refugee crisis literature': his highly acclaimed novel La Superba (2013) and the short-story 'Fatou yo' that was published in the text-collection Gelukszoekers (2015), but that is actually also a fragment from the aforementioned novel. I start my comparative discussion of these two texts by exploring the challenges and pitfalls in representing refugees in literature more in general, focusing on the seemingly inescapable trope of refugee victimhood and the humanitarian and empathic mind-set that 'refugee crisis literature' mostly requires from its reader. Then I embark on an analysis of the two texts and of the way in which, as I will demonstrate, the texts position and, ultimately, manipulate their empathic reader. I will argue that the discomfort that results from this manipulation is considerably more effective within the frame-work of La Superba than within the Gelukszoekers-collection, despite the latter's explicitly activist agenda. This paper presents the current state of knowledge on food supply to the Roman Limes, vici and towns in the Netherlands – based on archaeobotanical and archaeozoological research – and the role of the local countryside. For the first century AD, several areas of origin for the food can be established. Cereals were imported, but also supplied from the regions adjacent to the Rhine; pulses and oil seeds may have been sourced locally. Cattle were both imported and obtained locally. Population density in the countryside was low and farmers were not used to structurally producing surplus food. In the earliest phase, the army probably requisitioned cattle and raised pigs and chickens. From the late first century, supply was organised better and the local farmers supplied more of the cereals and meat required by the army, vici and towns. However, certain cereals were still imported. Orchards and vegetable gardens were located near the towns, where chickens were also raised. Throughout the Roman period, wild fruits and hazelnuts could be gathered and game, wild birds and fish hunted by consumers. Saltwater fish and seashells indicate trade with coastal regions. Wine, olive oil, fish sauce, preserved fruits, pine nuts, preserved meat and fish were imported from other provinces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the second century AD the Roman Empire reached its largest extent. By that time the military infrastructure at the periphery of the Empire stretched over thousands of kilometres, across the three continents surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. Rome had to exert its power in very different climates and landscapes, and deal with external threats varying from the highly developed Parthian Empire to hardly organised nomadic groups. The military infrastructure at its boundaries was therefore quite diverse, but nevertheless the military installations show many similarities across the Empire, due to the frequent displacements of army units and their commanders. During the early forties AD the Roman army built several timber auxiliary forts on the southern bank of the Lower Rhine. Remains of nine timber forts and a fortlet, sometimes well preserved, have been found in the western part of the Netherlands, in the Rhine delta: at Vechten (Bunnik), Utrecht, De Meern, Woerden, Bodegraven, Zwammerdam, Alphen aan den Rijn, Leiden-Roomburg and Valkenburg (South Holland) and the fortlet at Valkenburg-Marktveld. There also are indications of military presence further upstream, but there are hardly any traces to be found. The Rhine has destroyed most of the evidence, except for dredge finds and some structures in Arnhem-Meinerswijk and Herwen-De Bijland. Wood was available in the surroundings and it was used for building the forts. In the last quarter of the second century AD most of these auxiliary forts were partly rebuilt in stone. The paper analyses the transfer of South African literature to the German Democratic Republic. In its historiographic/methodological dimension it presents findings on the statistics of (South) African literature(s) translations in the Verlag Volk und Welt (the major East German publisher in the area of contemporary world literature), and on the place of literary translations in the East German foreign cultural policy, as well as in the socialist solidarity discourse of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED) and the antiapartheid movement. Furthermore, findings are presented on the publisher-internal selection criteria applied to South African literature, based on the archival data from the Bundesarchiv in Berlin (i.e. applications for a print permit and internal/external reviews), on issues around the transformation and adaptation of literature translated in the realm of the East German Weltliteratur, and on the transfer of South African literature from the GDR, based on the English language series Seven Seas Books. Resulting in the largest speech corpus of Dutch (+/- 9 million words), the construction of the Spoken Dutch Corpus (CGN) can be considered a unique project. Financed by the Dutch and the Flemish Government the CGN was successfully completed in 2004. This paper presents an overview of the CGN, from the beginning of the project in 1998 until now. First the project background -- motivation and project organisation -- will be described. Then a detailed description of the corpus contents will be presented, followed by an introduction to the corpus exploitation software Corex. A small-scale Corex experiment is carried out for further illustration. Besides, an overview of divergent corpus-based research using the CGN is given. The paper concludes with practical information about distribution by the TST-centrale, and future perspectives such as an online web version of the corpus and the additional JASMIN-CGN project. Most of the in-plant medium-voltage generators are grounded through resistors ranging from 200 to 400 A. In some unusual situations, the resistors may even be as high as 1200 A. Low-resistance grounding is a preferred choice for a medium-voltage power distribution system. However, extensive generator stator ground fault damages had been reported due to the prolonging generator neutral ground current, which would continue to flow even after the main and field breaker opened. This ground fault current could continue to flow for as long as 5 s depending on the generator open-circuit time constant T'do. As a result, the higher the generator neutral current, would lead to the higher stator ground fault damages. An IEEE Working Group has recently completed its study and made recommendations for medium-voltage generator grounding in a multiple source industrial environment. Based on the considerations of transient over voltage, ground fault damages, and ground fault protection, the working group suggests a few variations of grounding systems, which basically are low-resistance grounding systems during normal operating conditions, and the generator would be switched to a high-resistance grounded system from a normal low-resistance grounded system when a ground fault occurs in the generator stator. The purposes of this paper are: 1) to examine the generator transient over-voltage and currents under the low-resistance ground fault conditions, and also to evaluate their corresponding stator ground fault damages, and 2) to establish an acceptable maximum system ground fault level. This paper reports on a research on the use of Dutch forms of address (i.e. the second-person pronouns u and je/jij) among students in Poland. It takes the address model proposed by Brown en Gilman and the findings of the research of Hannie Vermaas and Roel Vismans on the present use of Dutch forms of address in the Netherlands as its theoretical inspiration. Moreover it homes in on domain (as defined by Fishman and Clyne et al.) as factor for choice of address forms. The paper is based on a quantitative analysis of a questionnaire in which Polish respondents of three universities in Poland were asked to point out which pronoun they use in order to address a variety of interlocutors. The research itself aims at finding out to what extend the Polish respondents are aware of the current sociolinguistic trends and changes in the use of forms of address in spoken Dutch in the Netherlands. This paper, ‘On the Transcription of Dutch Proper Names in Bulgarian' aims at providing general rules and guidelines to be applied in a new model for the transcription of Dutch proper names in Bulgarian. The fundamental principles of translation, transliteration and transcription have been considered as the most common methods for rendering proper names from a source language into a target language with a different writing system. It is crucial that the rendering of proper names be based on the authentic articulation of the Dutch name, avoiding the imitation of its true pronunciation. The written form of the name should also be taken into account as a lasting means of communication which can affect spoken language. Such traditional versions often occurred in the past as a result of lexical translations of parts of the name or of the whole name, as well as of morphological and/or phonological adaptations. The paper shows that when rendering Dutch names into Bulgarian priority should be given to transcription over transliteration. The paper explores Charles Fillmore’s scenes-and-frames semantics modified by Vannerem/ Snell-Hornby and Vermeer/Witte to be used by translation theory. The study provides in-depth analysis of Dutch and German translations of Bulgarian culture-specific words. The present paper discusses the VP-topicalization and the mirror effect. According to the Syntax of Dutch (Broekhuis & Corver 2016), these two tests can make a reliable, non-intuitive distinction between the postfield and the afterthought, as well as between the middle field and the postfield, which is often not noticeable in main clauses with only a finite verb. Although these tests seem valuable indeed, even to non-generative studies, there are also some limitations, and especially for prepositional phrases (PPs) which can be either placed in the middle field or in the postfield. Furthermore, this paper also aims at refining the motivations of extraposition, and more particularly extraposition of PPs. We therefore rely on empirical corpus-based research, which can fine-tune the theoretical framework of extraposition in the Syntax of Dutch. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
