A study of parental wellbeing in the U.K., France, and the Netherlands compared parents in 38 gay father families, 61 lesbian mother families, and 42 heterosexual parent families. In all family types, the parents had just become parents for the first time and had an infant aged around 4 months. The infants in the gay father families were born through surrogacy, and those in the lesbian mother families were conceived after insemination with donor sperm. The heterosexual parent families had used in vitro fertilization without sperm or egg donation. Standardized measures of parental wellbeing (parental stress, psychological adjustment, and partner relationship satisfaction) were used to collect data via a password-protected online survey. Both parents in all families completed the survey. The parents’ scores on the studied variables were similar regardless of family type or caregiver role. The findings of the present study contribute to the theoretical understanding of the role of family type and caregiver role in families whose first child was conceived by means of assisted reproductive technologies, and especially our knowledge of gay fathers who became parents through surrogacy.

Objectives This study sought to examine the diagnostic accuracy of the instantaneous wave-free ratio (iFR) and resting distal coronary artery pressure/aortic pressure (Pd/Pa) with respect to hyperemic fractional flow reserve (FFR) in a core laboratory-based multicenter collaborative study. Background FFR is an index of the severity of coronary stenosis that has been clinically validated in 3 prospective randomized trials. iFR and Pd/Pa are nonhyperemic pressure-derived indices of the severity of stenosis with discordant reports regarding their accuracy with respect to FFR. Methods iFR, resting Pd/Pa, and FFR were measured in 1,768 patients from 15 clinical sites. An independent physiology core laboratory performed blinded off-line analysis of all raw data. The primary objectives were to determine specific iFR and Pd/Pa thresholds with ≥90% accuracy in predicting ischemic versus nonischemic FFR (on the basis of an FFR cut point of 0.80) and the proportion of patients falling beyond those thresholds. Results Of 1,974 submitted lesions, 381 (19.3%) were excluded because of suboptimal acquisition, leaving 1,593 for final analysis. On receiver-operating characteristic analysis, the optimal iFR cut point for FFR ≤0.80 was 0.90 (C statistic: 0.81 [95% confidence interval: 0.79 to 0.83]; overall accuracy: 80.4%) and for PdPa was 0.92 (C statistic: 0.82 [95% confidence interval: 0.80 to 0.84]; overall accuracy: 81.5%), with no significant difference between these resting measures. iFR and PdPa had ≥90% accuracy to predict a positive or negative FFR in 64.9% (62.6% to 67.3%) and 48.3% (45.6% to 50.5%) of lesions, respectively. Conclusions This comprehensive core laboratory analysis comparing iFR and PdPa with FFR demonstrated an overall accuracy of ∼80% for both nonhyperemic indices, which can be improved to ≥90% in a subset of lesions. Clinical outcome studies are required to determine whether the use of iFR or PdPa might obviate the need for hyperemia in selected patients. © 2014 by the American College of Cardiology Foundation.

Een pluk haar is straks al voldoende voor de meest recente verblijfsinformatie. Tot voor kort moesten in een zogeheten isotopenonderzoek naast haren ook botten en tanden worden onderzocht en dat kostte al snel zes maanden. Bij de nieuwe methode zijn de resultaten binnen twee weken bekend. Het Nederlands Forensisch Instituut (NFI) en de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam hebben dat vandaag bekendgemaakt. "Dit kan essentieel zijn voor het onderzoek naar bijvoorbeeld de identiteit van een stoffelijk overschot, of het natrekken van de verklaring van een levend persoon over zijn meest recente verblijfplaatsen," legt een woordvoerder van het NFI uit. Het kan voor de politie in een strafonderzoek interessant zijn om te weten waar iemand vandaan komt of de laatste periode van zijn leven is geweest. "De politie krijgt aanwijzingen over een gebied waar ze daarvoor misschien helemaal geen onderzoek deden," verklaart de woordvoerder. Zo deed het NFI al eens onderzoek naar de botten, tanden en het haar van het zogenoemde Heulmeisje. Daarmee ontdekten de forensische onderzoekers dat ze waarschijnlijk in Duitsland opgroeide, in het Eifelgebied. Dat onderzoek duurde een half jaar, maar kan dus voortaan in twee weken zijn afgerond. Isotopen in het lichaam zijn kleine informatiedragers. "We krijgen ze onder andere binnen via drinkwater en dat varieert per regio van isotoopsamenstelling. Zo wordt de meest recente verblijfsinformatie in haren, huid- en bloedcellen opgeslagen." Haren zijn vooral interessant omdat die het langst bewaard blijven. Overigens blijft het NFI botten en tanden onderzoeken omdat die meer informatie bevatten.

In dit onderzoek werden draagbare Controlled Droplet Application (CDA) spuiten van drie merken beoordeeld op spuiteigenschappen en effectiviteit van onkruidbestrijding met glyfosaat. Als referentie werd een luchtdrukspuit met spuitlans in het onderzoek meegenomen. In de afgelopen jaren is er steeds meer belangstelling gekomen voor de ecologische waarde van zoomvegetaties rondom akkers. De planten in de vegetaties zijn van belang voor andere organismen zoals vogels en insecten en voorzien hen van voedsel, een schuilplaats en een plek om zich voort te planten. This paper describes the ways in which EU law forces Member States to reorganise their welfare states, focusing on the effects of free movement and competition principles on health care, education, and social insurance. It then considers the consequences of such reorganisations for national identity and social cohesion, for domestic and foreign policy and European integration, and as the creation of a new welfare industry. The thesis of the first part is this: that the negative harmonisation of welfare services via judicial application of free movement rules is potentially further reaching than often realised, and difficult to reverse. As a result of changes in welfare provision many services are now provided ‘for remuneration’. Moreover, legal, policy, and philosophical factors make it difficult to create a wholesale exemption for welfare. On the other hand, positive harmonisation remains politically unpopular and difficult to achieve, and at more than a very abstract framework level would probably be economically and organisationally undesirable too. Hence Europe is moving towards a continent-wide market for welfare services. The thesis of the second part, considering the consequences of such a development, is that this probably has far greater implications for national identity and social structure than it does for welfare itself. It is possible to achieve high quality universal welfare service provision in regulated markets, but the absence of the huge public or quasi-public institutions which are a part of European life will change the texture of society. This is potentially threatening to social cohesion, and also to the European sense of our place in the world, in which contrasts with the US, in which welfare states often play a role, are prominent. Any such changed sense of self could – indeed should – have wide-ranging effects on state behaviour, even extending to foreign policy. As well as this, the creation of a European market for welfare provides opportunities for deepening European integration and involving the EU in central aspects of individual life. Finally, welfare is potentially the world’s largest industry. However strange it may be to see it that way, privatising provision in Europe may create actors who can and will become global, perhaps using their expertise to help build welfare states around the world.

Verslaglegging van resultaten betreffende het vervolgonderzoek naar mogelijke nadelige effecten van mechanische onkruidbestrijding op de ontwikkeling van ziekten en plagen in gewassen. Middels een enquête is de risicobeleving van de telers ten aanzien van ziekten en plagen geïnventariseerd. Tevens resultaten van het vervolgonderzoek naar de import van onkruidzaden op biologische bedrijven vanuit bermen en natuurterreinen, verkregen met een simulatiemodel gekoppeld aan een windroos en met risico-berekeningen op basis van beschikbare literatuurgegevens.
