Feeding and eating disorders are characterised by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behaviour that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food, which significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning. These disorders usually develop during childhood and are characterised by high morbidity and mortality rates. The aberrant eating habits lead to under- or overweight and the compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, laxative abuse, and rumination, can greatly impact the overall physical condition and especially the dentition and the oral cavity. Because people suffering from these conditions are often inclined to conceal these, the dentist or dental hygienist can be the first one to raise questions about possible diagnoses of eating disorders.Samenvatting. Voedings- en eetstoornissen worden gekenmerkt door een persistente stoornis in eetgedrag of daaraan gerelateerd gedrag, die leidt tot een veranderde consumptie of opname van voedsel, gevolgd door verstoring van de lichamelijke gezondheid of het psychosociaal functioneren. Het zijn ziektebeelden die doorgaans ontstaan in de kindertijd en gepaard gaan met hoge morbiditeits- en mortaliteitscijfers. Door de afwijkende eetgewoonten met onder- en overgewicht als mogelijke gevolgen en de compensatiegedragingen zoals braken, laxeren en opboeren/omhoog halen van voedsel uit de maag, kunnen ze een grote impact op de lichamelijke gezondheid in het algemeen en het gebit in het bijzonder met zich meebrengen. Omdat mensen die lijden aan deze stoornissen bovendien geneigd zijn dit te verzwijgen, is de tandarts of mondhygiënist soms de eerste die een verdenking op een eetstoornis diagnose stelt.

Collaboration between oral care providers, district nurses and/or carers and nurse practioners in primary care is necessary to improve the oral health of frail and care-dependent older people. On the one hand, this is important when the oral health of older people is at risk of deteriorating and support in daily oral hygiene care is needed. On the other hand, it makes it easier for district nurses and carers to consult the oral care provider when they identify oral health problems. In general, interprofessional care contributes to a better awareness of the importance of good oral health and oral care in older people. On-the-job training could be an effective method for training oral health care skills by care professionals. .Samenwerking tussen mondzorgverleners, wijkverpleging of verzorgenden en praktijkondersteuners van de huisarts is noodzakelijk voor verbetering van de mondgezondheid bij kwetsbare en zorgafhankelijke ouderen. Aan de ene kant is dit van belang wanneer de mondgezondheid van oudere patiënten achteruit dreigt te gaan en hulp bij de dagelijkse mondverzorging nodig is. Aan de andere kant wordt door structurele samenwerking de drempel lager voor wijkverpleging en verzorgenden om mondzorgverleners te benaderen bij het signaleren van mondgezondheidsproblemen. De interprofessionele samenwerking draagt in het algemeen bij aan een beter bewustzijn van het belang van goede mondgezondheid en mondzorg bij ouderen. Training on the job zou een effectieve methode kunnen zijn voor het trainen van mondverzorgingsvaardigheden door professionele zorgverleners.

In a consensus meeting (September 2019) of the three Dutch and the two Flemish dental schools their current education programmes on gerodontology were presented and discussed. The aim was to examine if these programmes were in line with the most recent (inter)national guidelines, such as those of the European College of Gerodontology and the recently introduced Dutch framework Oral Health Care (2020). Therefore, the competences regarding the domain of gerodontology were analysed to assess if students were prepared adequately to meet the oral health care needs of the ageing population. In the consensus meeting a new set of competences was formulated together with a new outline for the gerodontology-programme applicable for the Dutch and Flemish dental schools.In een interfacultair overleg (september 2019) tussen de 3 Nederlandse en de 2 Vlaamse tandheelkunde-opleidingen werd het huidige gerodontologie-onderwijs geïnventariseerd en bediscussieerd. Het doel was dit onderwijs te toetsen aan de meest recente (inter)nationale kaders. De competenties op het gebied van het gerodontologie-onderwijs werden geïnventariseerd om na te gaan of studenten voldoende voorbereid worden op de veranderende zorgvraag van de vergrijzende populatie. In het interfacultaire overleg werden gezamenlijk gedragen competenties vastgesteld die de basis vormen voor een nieuwe én onderling vergelijkbare opzet voor het gerodontologie-onderwijs binnen de Nederlandse en Vlaamse opleidingen tandheelkunde.

Treatment of infectious diseases is complex and success is dependent upon a number of factors. The proper prescription and correct dosage of antimicrobials are important elements in this respect. Incorrect prescription and insufficient dosage can result not only in treatment failure but also contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance. In order to achieve correct antibiotic dosages it is necessary to gain insight in pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles. It is also vital to differentiate among various types of infections and to adjust antibiotic prescription to the clinical situation of the individual patient accordingly. To further optimise antibiotic policy collaboration between dental and medical professions is of major importance.De behandeling van infectieziekten is complex en het slagen ervan is van diverse factoren afhankelijk. Het juist voorschrijven en correct doseren van antibiotica is hierbij een belangrijk onderdeel. Als hierin tekort wordt geschoten dan kan dit niet alleen leiden tot therapiefalen, maar ook bijdragen aan resistentie-ontwikkeling. Voor het correct doseren van antibiotica is inzicht in farmacodynamische en farmacokinetische principes van belang. Daarnaast is het essentieel om onderscheid te maken tussen verschillende typen infecties en hierop het individuele antibioticabeleid af te stemmen. Om het antibioticabeleid verder te kunnen optimaliseren is samenwerking tussen tandartsen en artsen van groot belang.

Halitosis is a frequently occurring problem, the cause of which is generally to be found in the mouth. The challenge for oral health care providers is to diagnose it correctly and treat it effectively. Differential diagnosis is of great importance in making a distinction between halitosis which originates in the mouth and which does not originate in the mouth. Oral halitosis can be treated effectively by good oral health care. Plaque accumulation on the tongue is the most common cause of oral halitosis. Tongue cleansing, possibly in combination with a specific mouth wash, is consequently recommended as an element of oral hygiene care. Other oral health problems, such as periodontal disease, caries and ill-fitting removable dentures should be treated adequately to eliminate these problems as potential causes of halitosis.

In this article the principles of child oral health care in the Netherlands and the consequences of cariological principals of oral health care delivery to children are described. First of all the age of the child plays a very significant role in decisions concerning prevention and restoration. In addition, the combination of a positive attitude on the part of the dentist and a pain-free treatment can prevent fear of treatment and avoidance behaviour of the children. In the treatment of carious lesions, moreover, the oral health care provider should consider to what extent the problem is related to behaviour and fits in the multi-factorial caries model. Restorative treatments should be considered as supporting prevention, reducing caries activity and eliminating the effects of neglected oral health care. Prevention has to be seen as an essential element of the treatment model and it should start early from the standpoint of habit formation and the rapid demineralization process in the deciduous dentition which results from failed preventive care.

The oral health status of residents in Dutch nursing homes is rather poor, especially of those depending on caregivers for their oral health care. Moreover, when care dependency is rising, the provision of good oral health care becomes more difficult. With more elderly people still having (parts of) their natural teeth, the need for good oral health care is increasing even more. Therefore a specific guideline was developed. The ultimate aim of the guideline "Oral health care for dependent residents in long term care facilities" is to improve the oral health of nursing home residents. Oral health care needs to be incorporated in daily nursing home care routine and in the integral care plan of every resident. Attention is given to the importance of an adequate implementation of this guideline as well as to the necessity of research evaluating the effects of it's implementation.
