The role of Europe and Europeans in the archaeology of post-1500 history has recently been critiqued. Some research has been pejoratively labeled Eurocentrism. This paper addresses the problems with adopting an emotional understanding of Eurocentrism and argues instead for its archaeological examination within the framework of an explicit rnultiscalar modern-world (historical) archaeology. The article discusses the social impact on immigrants in the U.S. and Western Europe of the historical legacies of ethno-racial traumas such as the Holocaust, slavery, and legalized racial segregation ("Jim Crow"). The author reflects on how these historical events play a role in the development of public perceptions and policies that relate to immigrants and their children. A contrast is made between social benefits accorded nonwhite immigrants in the U.S. versus Muslim immigrants in Europe and how social conditions relate to collective memory. Other topics include public responses to genocide, the role of the civil rights movement, and race in public discourse.
