The degradation in power quality causes adverse economical impact on the utilities and customers. Harmonics in current and voltage are one of the most commonly known power quality issues and are solved by the use of a hybrid series active power filter (HSAPF). In this paper, a new controller design using sliding-mode controller-2 is proposed to make the HSAPF more robust and stable. An accurate averaged model of a three-phase HSAPF is also derived in this paper. The matrix converter (MC) is a direct ac–ac power converter without an intermediate dc link. It has several attractive features, such as high power density, four-quadrant operation, and bidirectional power flow. However, the application of MCs in high-voltage and high-power systems is still limited by the device voltage levels. It is well known that the multilevel power converter technology can be a solution to enhance the voltage rating and improve harmonic performance in many applications. Therefore, an application of a multilevel topology based on a direct ac–ac power converter is proposed in this paper. This paper first introduce the topology structure, the switching pattern grouping method, and the proposed output voltage modulation method for a five-level capacitor clamped multilevel matrix converter (5LMC). Amplitude coefficient adjustment is also introduced as a part of modulation procedure to simplify the duty cycles calculation. Simulation from MATLAB/Simulink is given to demonstrate the theoretical work. Experimental results from a five-level matrix converter prototype are presented to validate the theoretical findings. This paper presents a novel family of single-switch resonant dc–dc converters with low switch voltage stress. The single-switch resonant converter which has a ground-referenced switch is advantageous for implementing the gate drive circuit and operating at several-MHz switching frequency. However, the conventional ones mostly have high voltage stress on the switch, roughly 4–5 times the input voltage. In this paper, we propose the single-switch converter topologies derived from the drain-source impedance networks consisting of two inductors and two capacitors. The switch voltage of the proposed converters is shaped into a near trapezoid by designing the resonant networks to have the desired drain-source impedance. Furthermore, a simple and specific design scheme is presented here so that the peak switch voltage is lowered to 2.2–2.5 times the input voltage while zero voltage switching is achieved. The shunt regulator is a key part of the power conditioning unit, which is becoming more and more important in the spacecrafts. Due to the nonlinear link, the switch operating with hysteresis control, the shunt regulator is a nonlinear system; however, the stability analysis method for the system is still grounded on the approximate linearization method, which neglects some of the ac and dc characteristics. In this paper, a novel stability analysis method for the nonlinear systems is proposed based on the describing function, which can be used to model the nonlinear link in the shunt regulator system. Further, the different conclusion of the shunt regulator system stability are drawn, by the approximate linearization method and the stability analysis method proposed in this paper, respectively. Finally, the simulation and experimental results prove the correctness of the stability analysis method with describing function and discover the incompletion of the approximate linearization methods on the stability analysis. A novel fault diagnosis method and a fault tolerant scheme for open-circuit faults on a traction rectifier are proposed in this paper. When an open-circuit fault occurs in any leg of the rectifier, indication will be generated accurately to identify the faulty leg without utilization of any extra sensors. Furthermore, the faulty rectifier can be reconfigured to maintain its full output rate to prevent traction rectifier breakdown. The fault diagnosis process is neither related to control trigger signal nor the load fluctuation. The involved parameters are the input and output voltage of the rectifier, which are the most common parameters in rectifier control. Working under zero voltage and zero current, five additional switch sets are adopted for the fault-tolerant control process to reconfigure the topological structure between the traction rectifier and the traction transformer, meanwhile the original structure of the rectifier is retained. Analysis, design, and implementing consideration for both normal and abnormal operating situations of the traction rectifier are present in this paper. This paper proposes unified non-inverting and inverting ac–ac converter (UNI-AC) using pulse width modulation (PWM) for the utility voltage compensation. It offers four effective switching states to regulate the output voltage in bipolar manner, facilitating versatile modes of operation with different number of switching states being modulated. Each mode of the proposed UNI-AC is able to compensate both the grid voltage sag and swell problems due to its bipolar voltage gain. The operational principle and comparison for all these modes are investigated in details. Also, the UNI-AC is reversible and compatible with full range of power factor. Other technical merits offered by the proposed approach include the compact hardware installation, reduced switch voltage stress (also low dv/dt) and decreased control complexity. A family of bidirectional switched-capacitor (SC) converters with high-gain ratio of any positive integer is proposed in this paper for distributed energy resources applications. As compared with other existing SC converters achieving a same conversion gain, the main advantages of the proposed converters are that they require a relatively lower number of switches and capacitors, have a relatively lower switch's and capacitor's stress, and that their associated driver circuits are simpler to realize. Importantly, with the achievable conversion ratio being flexible and that the input and output of the proposed converters are of common ground, the proposed converters are widely suitable for many applications. Moreover, as the proposed converters do not possess magnetic component or any component that can severely degrade the converters’ performance at high temperature, they are especially useful for high-temperature applications. Besides, the proposed converters are capable of delivering bidirectional power, which is a key requirement for emerging applications with battery storages. Different aspects of the proposed converters, including a simple auxiliary power supply circuit for the MOSFETs’ drivers, will be discussed in this paper. A nine-time SC converter prototype that operates with 20-V input voltage, 100-W output, and at 75 kHz, is constructed and tested. Experiment results show that the maximum efficiency achievable with this prototype is over 98% (without driver's loss) and the efficiency over the entire load range between 25 and 100 W is over 95.5% including the driver's loss. The output voltage ripple of the SC converter is less than 1%. In a conventional finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC) formulation, active and reactive power control loops rely on the predictive controller, whereas the dc-bus voltage is usually governed by a PI-based control loop. This originates from fact that the dynamic equations for describing the predictions of these variables are heavily coupled. In this paper, a cascade-free FCS-MPC for single-phase grid-connected power converters is presented. The proposed control algorithm is formulated in terms of established dynamic references design, which was originally proposed to directly govern active and reactive power, and dc-voltage in three-phase power converters. In this paper, the dynamic reference design concept is extended to control single-phase grid-connected power converters. The proposed control algorithm does not use instantaneous ac-power calculations; instead, it directly formulates the optimal control problem on the grid-current in the original stationary reference frame. The experimental results obtained with a single-phase grid-connected neutral point clamped (NPC) converter confirm a successful design, where system constraints, e.g., maximum power and weighted switching frequency, are easily taken into account. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. The inverter topology with single dc supply is realized by cascading a two-level inverter with two floating-capacitor-fed full-bridge modules. To reduce current stress and improve efficiency of dual active bridge (DAB) dc–dc converters, various control schemes have been proposed in recent decades. Most control schemes for directly minimizing power losses from power loss modeling analysis and optimization aspect of the adopted converter are too difficult and complicated to implement in real-time digital microcontrollers. Thus, this paper focuses on a simple solution to reduce current stress and improve the efficiency of the adopted DAB converter. However, traditional current-stress-optimized (CSO) schemes have some drawbacks, such as inductance dependency and an additional load-current sensor. In this paper, a simple CSO scheme with a unified phase-shift (UPS) control, which can be equivalent to the existing conventional phase-shift controls, is proposed for DAB dc–dc converters to realize current stress optimization. The simple CSO scheme can overcome those drawbacks of traditional CSO schemes, gain the minimum current stress, and improve efficiency. Then, a comparison of single-phase-shift (SPS) control, simple CSO scheme with dual-phase-shift (CSO-DPS) control, simple CSO scheme with extended-phase-shift (CSO-EPS) control, and simple CSO scheme with UPS (CSO-UPS) control is analyzed in detail. This paper summarizes simulation based technical feasibility and cost benefit analyses of a range of off-the-shelf electrical losses reduction intervention solutions in the Isle of Wight (IoW) 11 kV distribution network in the United Kingdom (UK), assessed over a period of 45 years. Based on presented results, the paper provides a brief commentary on the merits, drawbacks, risks and recommendations associated with each considered network intervention. Among considered network interventions, the transformer auto stop-start scheme, where one of the transformers among a pair at a primary substation would be switched depending on the substation's varying load, was found to be the optimal solution, i.e., in reducing technical losses significantly and may also have a reasonable Net Present Value (NPV) with a good rate of Return on Investment (RoI) when fully implemented. In this paper, the Z-source converter is introduced to power factor correction (PFC) applications. The concept is demonstrated through a wireless power transfer (WPT) system for electric vehicle battery charging, namely Z-source resonant converter (ZSRC). Due to the Z-source network (ZSN), the ZSRC inherently performs PFC and regulate the system output voltage simultaneously, without adding extra semiconductor devices and control circuitry to the conventional WPT system such as conventional PFC converters do. In other words, the ZSN can be categorized as a family of the single-stage PFC converters. In addition, the ZSN is suitable for high-power applications since it is immune to shoot-through states, which increases reliability and adds a boost feature to the system. The ZSRC-based WPT system operating principle is described and analyzed in this paper. Simulations and experimental results based on a 1-kW prototype with 20-cm air gap between the system primary and secondary sides are presented to validate the analysis and demonstrate the effectiveness of the ZSN in the PFC of the WPT system. AC voltage regulation is required in both the domestic and industrial sectors to avoid undesired effects from random voltage variations of the power supply. The paper introduces an ac voltage stabilizer/converter (ACVS) that is based on a controllable autotransformer technology. The proposed ACVS offers a specified strategy of voltage regulation, less harmonics, and low cost. The paper explains the operating principle of the ACVS and derives its nonlinear mathematical model. To ensure the desired performance of the ACVS while it is subject to uncertain input voltage and load variations, an optimal control strategy is designed. It is achieved via transforming the ACVS model extending with fictive axis emulation into a rotating reference frame and the linearization of the model via specific orientation of the reference frame and introducing a linear control action. Operation of the ACVS is simulated under different disturbances due to load and grid voltage changes, and compared to voltage stabilization with application of I and PI controllers. This paper proposes an active resonance circuit based on multiple series gaps (MSG) with voltage-dividing network and self-charging trigger device. The working principle of active resonance circuit, MSG, and triggering device is described in detail. To determine the optimal parameter setting of MSG, the effects of the voltage frequency, equalizing resistance, and voltage-dividing capacitance on the voltage distribution of MSG are analyzed by simulation. To realize the interrupting process of short fault current and determine the operation requirements of the main devices of precharge direct current (dc) circuit breaker, a simulation model of interrupting short fault current is performed. Furthermore, an experiment of four-series gaps is presented to verify the turn-on characteristic of the MSG and an experiment of artificial current zero is set up to testify the feasibility of the active resonance circuit. The simulation and experimental results show that the active resonance circuit proposed in this paper can generate an artificial zero current and is suitable for precharge dc circuit breaker. This paper shows how to use modular Marx multilevel converter diode ( \textM^3 CD) modules to apply unipolar or bipolar high-voltage pulses for pulsed power applications. The \textM^3 CD cells allow the assembly of a multilevel converter without needing complex algorithms and parameter measurement to balance the capacitor voltages. This paper also explains how to supply all the modular cells in order to ensure galvanic isolation between control circuits and power circuits. This paper proposes a new topological configuration for a unified power quality conditioner (UPQC). Generally, the power structure of the three-phase three-wire UPQC consists of two back-to-back connected six-switch inverters. For this configuration, out of 12 switches, six of the series inverter switches will be underutilized most of the time. To improve the semiconductor utilization and consequently to reduce the total switch count, this paper proposes a new reduced switch topology for the UPQC. The proposed topology is realized using only ten switches and retains all the performance merits of the 12-switch UPQC while minimizing its underutilization without increasing the switch VA rating. The paper provides a detailed analytical study and evaluation by comparing the proposed topology with the twelve- and nine-switch-based UPQC system configurations. The control of an ultracapacitor (UC)-based dc–dc power supply is crucial to provide reliable energy backup to critical loads in the case of momentary power main failures. In this regard, smooth and seamless transition between charging and discharging controls of UC stack is of paramount importance. For ride-through applications where charging and discharging times are critical, provision of different control structures for charging and discharging subsystems is crucial. The conventional control techniques, though ensure seamless mode transition, does not allow different control structures for both the subsystems. This paper proposes an independent switch control strategy, which ensures seamless transition between charging and discharging control modes. The proposed control is based on pulse-width modulation blocking and is shown to ensure the fastest mode transition between control modes. The proposed control also elucidates an accurate method for identification of control modes, which is important to independent switch control. The advantages of the proposed control compared with conventional controls is presented in this paper. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. This paper presents predictive current-mode control for a single-phase high-frequency transformer-isolated dual-active bridge dc-to-dc converter. The predictive control algorithm increases the bandwidth of the current loop of the converter which enables tracking of the current reference within one switching cycle. The paper further demonstrates that the application of the predictive control algorithm can remove transient dc offset from the current in high-frequency isolation transformer within one switching cycle. Direct control of the converter current protects the transformer from saturation even at transient conditions. The control algorithm has been implemented on an experimental setup and transient tests have been performed to validate controller performance. Since the predictive control algorithm is dependent on the measured value of the leakage inductance of the transformer, a compensator has been implemented to improve the parameter insensitivity of the proposed controller. This paper presents an isolated auxiliary power supply for medium-voltage power electronics systems. The proposed converter comprises two stages: a non-isolated ac/dc stage that connects directly to the medium-voltage line, and an isolated dc/dc stage that provides 100-W output power at 24 V, with 10 kV isolation. The proposed modular ac/dc stage uses just one active semiconductor device per module, features an internal capacitor voltage balancing, and achieves power factor correction by employing predictive current control. High switching frequency operation of both converter stages enable a reduction in system size and weight when compared to traditional low-frequency transformer-based approach. This paper deals with the control and implementation of solar photovoltaic (PV) array-based multi-objective bi-directional charger beneficial for electric vehicle (EV), household load, and utility. For EV, the charger provides the charging facility. For household load, the charger acts as a standalone inverter, and for utility the charger acts as an active power filter. However, for providing the multi-functionality and the multi-mode operation capability of the charger, a reconfigurable control strategy is proposed. Moreover, an adaptive dc-link voltage strategy is proposed for achieving the optimum voltage at dc link under all voltage conditions for achieving minimum ripple in grid currents. The charger also uses a voltage synchronization strategy for achieving the seamless mode transition between the grid-connected and standalone modes. In grid-connected mode, the charger uses a double second-order generalized integrator-based positive sequence estimator along with the improved linear sinusoidal tracer-based algorithm for generating the balanced and sinusoidal reference grid currents, under the unbalanced and distorted grid voltages. Three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters are being widely adopted in low-voltage low-power applications. For an intended application, the modulation strategy and the operating conditions are the two key factors that highly influence the major performance indices of the NPC inverter, such as efficiency, harmonic distortion, and voltage oscillations at neutral point (NP). Considering dynamic loading applications where the operating point varies significantly, this paper proposes an improved adjustable pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy for a three-level NPC inverter that can alter its modulation pattern to meet desired performance objectives for the full operation range. It has been shown that by varying two control parameters namely discontinuity control parameter and bias control parameter, the proposed modulation strategy changes its pattern between the most efficient generalized discontinuous PWM to NP oscillations-free partial dipolar PWM strategy. Additionally, to obtain a tradeoff between the performance parameters—efficiency, NP oscillations, and waveform quality—The proposed strategy has the ability to settle at the intermediate modulation patterns by transforming into a hybrid modulation signal. Furthermore, considering NP voltage unbalance mitigation as major technical challenge in adjustable modulation strategy, a voltage unbalance compensator that exhibits satisfactory balancing performance for the entire variations of modulation patterns and operating conditions has also been presented. The carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM) and virtual space vector pulsewidth modulation (VSVPWM) for neutral point clamped three-level converter are reviewed briefly in this paper. A novel modulation strategy is proposed to maintain unconditional neutral point voltage balance under the full range of power factor and modulation index. The proposed PWM strategy is featured with three switching actions in one switching cycle, which is named 3SNPBPWM hereafter. In 3SNPBPWM, one phase is clamped to a certain level without switching action, and the other two phases have one and two switching actions in one switching cycle (SC), respectively. Moreover, a neutral point voltage recovery algorithm for 3SNPBPWM is also proposed. The performance of 3SNPBPWM is analyzed and compared with CBPWM and VSVPWM in terms of switching loss, waveform quality, and ability of neutral point voltage recovery. This paper presents a novel model predictive control (MPC) for the T-type single-phase three-level inverters. The cumbersome procedure in tuning of weighting factors is eliminated so that the implementation of the proposed MPC becomes easy. The constant switching frequency is achieved during the control implementation in order to facilitate the filter design. In order to optimize the distribution of the output current harmonics, multiple voltage vectors are employed in each control cycle with their application times setting inversely proportion to the respective cost function. The redundant small voltage vectors are utilized to balance the neutral point voltage of the inverter by directly regulating the upper and lower dc-link capacitors voltages. Finally, the proposed MPC algorithm is experimentally evaluated and compared with other two unfixed switching frequency MPC algorithms in terms of the steady state, transient performance, and parameter sensitivity. When fast voltage control is used in a power factor control, the ripple of the dc link causes current harmonics. This paper proposes a method to reduce the harmonic content of a fast voltage loop in a power factor correction, which can both produce low distortion during steady-state operation and fast recovery from a load transient. The performance is achieved by using a Takagi–Sugeno-type nonlinear controller for dc-link voltage control. The proposed nonlinear control is compared with linear proportional–integral (PI) control, which is tuned to meet the standardized regulations for the harmonic content in a 3-kW single phase power supply. The results show that the presented nonlinear voltage controller can maintain the dynamic performance of the linear control with reduced current harmonics. Ensuring electrification of remote locations continues to be a major challenge for power engineers. To deal with the effect of intermittent nature of wind, this paper presents the design and implementation of a composite sliding mode controller (CSMC) for a battery energy storage (BES) supported solar photovoltaic (PV)–wind hybrid system in a remote location. This control technique comprises of a soft-switching sliding-mode observer (SS-SMO) and a nonsingular terminal sliding mode controller (NTSMC). The SS-SMO is used to observe the disturbances, whereas the NTSMC is used as a speed controller. The chattering problem caused by the conventional sliding mode controller is alleviated by replacing the conventional signum switching function with the smooth hyperbolic tangent function in disturbance observer loop. The fast and finite time convergence NTSMC based speed controller along with the SS-SMO based disturbance rejection unit, serves the benefits of CSMC. This technique exhibits robustness against model uncertainties and external disturbances. Moreover, the complexity of the system is reduced by replacing the mechanical speed and position sensors with parameter estimation. A double-stage configuration using a dc/dc boost converter is adopted for a PV system. A comparative analysis is presented between the proposed and conventional techniques. A prototype of the hybrid system is developed in the laboratory with permanent magnet synchronous generator. The CSMC-based controller with disturbance rejection ability is implemented to harvest peak wind power. The interleaved bidirectional buck–boost converter dual active half-bridge (IBBC-DAHB) dc–dc converter consists of two converters IBBC and DAHB and a coupled inductor. The IBBC-DAHB converter has significant features such as low ripple current at the low-voltage side, low current stress on the input inductors, voltage stress across the switches less than the high-voltage side, high voltage gain, and zero-voltage soft switching. The converter offers high efficiency using phase-shift modulation when it operates at a nominal design operating point. However, the efficiency decreases due to high circulating current, high current stress, and limited soft-switching range when the source and load voltages deviate from their nominal values. This paper employs both duty cycle and phase-shift modulation methods to improve the above mentioned shortcomings using voltage matching for the DAHB converter. The proposed converter is analyzed and a 500-W experimental prototype with 40–60 V input voltage and 400 V output voltage under 100 kHz switching frequency is implemented to verify the theoretical results. The maximum efficiency of 97.15% is achieved at 60 V and 400 W. A flat efficiency characteristic for the converter is derived by the proposed control method, where the efficiency at 20% of nominal load is 91% and much higher than the phase-shift control, which is 70.8%. In more electric aircraft (MEA), three-phase power factor correction (PFC) rectifiers of several kilowatts are required. In this paper, a three-phase buck–boost derived PFC converter with three switches and with input inductors connected in delta configuration for use in MEA is presented. The proposed converter is operated in a discontinuous conduction mode to achieve PFC at ac input. This avoids the inner current control loop which further eliminates the current sensors. It requires only one output voltage sensor unlike five sensors in conventional PFC converter for its control implementation. This makes the system cost effective, more reliable, and robust. A simple voltage control loop is used to generate the gate signals. The steady state operation of the converter and detailed design calculations are presented. For each power component, the analytical expressions for calculating the average and rms current ratings are derived to facilitate the converter design. The small-signal model of the converter is presented to aid the controller design. The experimental results from a 2 kW laboratory prototype are presented to confirm the operation of the proposed converter. An input power factor of 0.999, an input current total harmonic distortion of as low as 2.76%, and a high conversion efficiency of 96% are achieved from the prototype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a topology combination scheme to achieve wide-range operation for LLC resonant converters. Instead of directly adding an auxiliary current injection circuit for each individual LLC converter, the proposed scheme combines two LLC converters through coupled resonance. Then, one LLC circuit can be utilized to adjust the equivalent resonant parameters of the other LLC circuit. By only controlling the phase delay between the mosfet bridges, output voltage regulation is properly maintained without changing the switching frequency. Since the total power rating does not change and each converter can share the load, it does not have any extra cost of power components. The advantages of this design include higher power efficiency, smaller size, and optimized utilization of each converter at different load, since both converters can fulfill isolated power conversion with independent control. Also, by taking the benefit of suppressed frequency variation, a smaller leakage inductance and a lower ratio between the leakage inductance and the magnetizing inductance are allowed, so that the coupling of transformer windings and transformer efficiency just improve. A new boost-type multilevel inverter using switched capacitor structure is proposed. The main feature of the proposed inverter is boosting and multilevel output with small number of components. Due to the passive voltage balancing of each capacitor maintains a constant voltage without additional control. In this paper, the operation principle, the modulation method, the voltage/current stresses on switches and the determination of capacitances, the simulation results with MATLAB/Simulink R2015a, the experimental results, and the 2-kW simulation are shown. The simulation and the experiments were conducted under resistive load and inductive load conditions. In addition, the load variation was conducted in the experiment. Under both resistive load and inductive load conditions, the obtained waveforms by simulation and experiment agreed well with the theory. This paper presents a novel closed-loop digital control scheme to maintain proper interleaving operation of a multi-channel boundary-conduction-mode boost converter used in power-factor-correction applications. The proposed control scheme is suitable for implementation on a low-cost microcontroller. This is made possible by executing the control scheme at a constant sampling rate that is much slower than the maximum switching frequency of the converter. The performance of the control scheme is further improved by using an adaptive gain that scales with the on-time of the converter, which provides optimal phase-shift control and stability under all operating conditions. The digital closed-loop control scheme is validated experimentally on a three-channel 1-kW prototype ac–dc converter. The converter has an output voltage of 400 V and a universal input voltage range of 85–265 V. The strive to increase the energy yield of photovoltaic (PV) power systems has made PV module integrated dc–dc converters (dc-MICs) a reality of modern PV plants. These converters regulate their input voltage, and their dynamic behavior is heavily influenced by the non-linear characteristic of the PV module. The regulation of the PV module voltage and average inductor current by means of a linear cascaded controller is a popular control technique, simplifying the converter dynamics, and providing inherent current limiting; however, it is prone to instability depending on the interaction between the PV source and the interfacing converter, as well as the value of the controller parameters. These factors present a clear challenge for control design; moreover, the converter transient response undesirably depends on the PV module operating point. In order to solve these issues, while maintaining regulation of PV module voltage and average inductor current, this paper proposes to adopt a non-linear controller designed with the feedback linearization control (FLC) technique. The control laws are derived and implemented in a non-inverting buck–boost dc module integrated converter, as this is a favorite topology for the PV interfacing application. A digitally controlled converter prototype is built and used to obtain experimental results, where the FLC technique is compared with a linear cascaded control technique. The results confirm the superior performance of the presented FLC technique, which is robust and able to regulate the converter input voltage with fast and consistent dynamics, regardless of the PV module or load operating conditions. The widespread use of electronic devices increases the need for compact power factor corrected power supplies. This paper describes an isolated power factor corrected power supply that utilizes the leakage inductance of the isolation transformer to provide boost inductor functionality. The bulk capacitor is in the isolated part of the power supply allowing for controlled startup without dedicated surge limiting components. A control method based on switch timing and input/output voltage measurements is developed to jointly achieve voltage regulation and input power factor control. This paper introduces a new configuration of bidirectional multilevel converter in electric vehicle (EV) applications. It has multilevel dc–dc converter with a dc link capacitor voltage balance feature. The multilevel dc–dc converter operates in a bidirectional manner, which is a fundamental requirement in EVs. Compared to the conventional configurations, the proposed one only implements two extra power switches and a capacitor to balance the voltage of the T-type multilevel inverter (MLI) capacitor over a complete drive cycle or at fault conditions. Therefore, no extra isolated sensor, control loops, and/or special switching pattern are required. Moreover, the proposed configuration due to the high-frequency cycle-by-cycle voltage balance between ${C_N}$ and ${C_P}$ , the bulky electrolytic capacitors used in T-type MLI, are replaced with more reliable longer life film capacitors. This will result in a size and weight reduction of the converter by 20%. This allows more real estate for the EV battery in the chassis’ space envelope to increase its capacity. In this paper, an input-series flyback converter with the coupled-inductor-based passive snubber is proposed, where the input-series converter is based on transformer integration, and the passive snubber is composed of inductors, capacitors, and diodes. The inductors of the snubber in various series modules are made on a common magnetic core, and the coupled-inductor scheme is adopted. With the help of the coupled inductor, active input voltage sharing of the input-series converter can also be achieved after the switches are turned off, and voltage sharing of the switch in each series module can be ensured, which overcome the shortcomings of the existing input-series flyback converter. Active voltage sharing processes caused by the coupled inductor are analyzed in detail. Furthermore, the design guideline of the passive snubber is discussed. Finally, the experimental study has been done on a 1500 Vdc/60 W laboratory-made prototype composed of three flyback series modules, and the feasibility of the proposed method and the theoretical analysis is verified by the experimental results. This paper presents a sinusoidal pulsewidth modulation (SPWM) based direct digital control with average-voltage model (AVM) and division–summation process for paralleled three-phase three-wire (3φ3W) grid-connected converters to reduce circulating currents. With the direct digital control, plant of each single-phase converter can be derived directly, and a controller is then designed to cover the variation effects of filter inductance and grid voltage. Based on SPWM and AVM over a switching cycle, each 3φ3W converter can be decomposed into three single-phase converters and each converter is controlled individually to track its sinusoidal reference current tightly, reducing circulating currents significantly. Equal current sharing is therefore also achieved. The control laws for achieving grid connection are derived in detail. In the design and implementation, the inductances corresponding to various inductor currents are measured offline and stored in the controller for scheduling loop gain cycle by cycle. Model-predictive current control (MPCC) is a promising candidate for modular multilevel converter (MMC) control due to its advantages of direct modeling and fast dynamic response. The conventional MPCC, which obtains the optimal control input by evaluating a cost function for all the possible switching states, may make the MPCC impractical due to the exponentially increasing computation burden with the increasing number of submodules (SMs). On the other hand, the MPCC experiences high load current and circulating current tracking errors, since only one switching state is selected and applied during one control period. To address these issues, this paper proposes an MPCC with phase-shifted pulsewidth modulation (PS-PWM) for improving the steady-state control performance. The arm voltages are considered as a whole to implement the proposed MPCC. The optimal duty cycle is obtained based on the load and circulating current tracking error minimization and applied using the PS-PWM. As a result, the computation burden is unrelated to the number of SMs by avoiding the exhaustive evaluation process for all the possible switching states. A better steady-state performance with smaller tracking errors is achieved with the similar switching frequency, and the tedious tuning process of the weighting factor is eliminated. This paper presents a comprehensive and generalized analysis of the bidirectional dual active bridge (DAB) dc–dc converter using triple phase shift (TPS) control to enable closed-loop power regulation while minimizing current stress. The key new achievements are a generic analysis in terms of possible conversion ratios/converter voltage gains (i.e., Buck/Boost/Unity), per unit based equations regardless of DAB ratings, and a new simple closed-loop controller implementable in real time to meet desired power transfer regulation at minimum current stress. Per unit based analytical expressions are derived for converter ac rms current as well as power transferred. An offline particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is used to obtain an extensive set of TPS ratios for minimizing the rms current in the entire bidirectional power range of –1 to 1 per unit. The extensive set of results achieved from PSO presents a generic data pool, which is carefully analyzed to derive simple useful relations. Such relations enable a generic closed-loop controller design that can be implemented in real time avoiding the extensive computational capacity that iterative optimization techniques require. A detailed Simulink DAB switching model is used to validate the precision of the proposed closed-loop controller under various operating conditions. Ultracapacitor (UC) based dc–dc power supplies are widely used for addressing surge power demands and to provide energy backup to critical loads. The conventional control techniques, such as unified control strategy, though ensure seamless mode transition, do not offer complete flexibility in charging and discharging controls which is crucial in UC-based backup systems. On the other hand, controls, such as independent switch control, though allow great flexibility in control, do not ensure seamless mode transition without appropriate mode-switch logic. This paper proposes a time-varying virtual resistance based mode transition control for independent switch control which not only ensures smooth, seamless transition between charging and discharging control modes but also ensures complete control over the mode transition durations. The proposed control is found to be robust to error mode identification as compared to introducing dead band between control modes. The proposed control is verified on a proof of concept experimental setup at a power level of $P_o=65$ W, voltage level of $V_g=26$ V with the dc–dc converter switching at $f_{\text{sw}}=100$ kHz. The standard alternative-arm converters (AAC) with the sweet spot or short overlap operation have faced a challenge of balancing submodule (SM) capacitor voltages, where this issue has not been paid much attention so far. In this paper, a new control strategy for the SM-capacitor voltage balancing of the AAC applied in high-voltage dc transmission systems is proposed. The suggested control technique is composed of three regulators, where a control for the average voltage of all SM capacitors, the voltage balancing among the converter arms, and the voltage balancing of the individual SM capacitor are performed. Based on the operation principle of the standard AAC, which activates only three of six converter arms simultaneously, the energy balancing of the three activated arms is performed every one sixth of the fundamental cycle by the converter common offset voltage. Band-stop filters with the central frequencies at the fundamental, second-, and third-order components of the line frequency are applied to obtain the average values of the SM capacitor voltages for the feedback controllers. The simple proportional and integral controllers are employed for this scheme and the voltages of SM capacitors are mostly balanced during the steady states and kept closely to the rating with overshoot of less than 7% under the transient conditions. The no-load curve of the dielectric recovery strength of the ultra-fast mechanical vacuum switch (MVS) changing with time is the theoretical foundation to optimize the turn-off strategy of the hybrid direct current circuit breaker with load commutation switch. To avoid the shortcomings of the classic synthetic circuit, a novel test circuit is proposed to measure the no-load dielectric recovery curve of the MVS in this paper. In the test circuit, a succession of pulse voltages is automatically applied on the MVS, and multiple breakdowns of the MVS occur in one test. Therefore, the dielectric strength of the MVS at multiple time points is obtained, and the envelope of the applied voltage on the MVS during one test can describe the dielectric recovery curve of the MVS; as a result, the test workload could be reduced dramatically and the measurement is more authentic. By changing test conditions, including the rate of rise of the test voltage and the operating speed of the MVS, no-load dielectric recovery characteristics are studied. The research has shown that the dielectric recovery speed of the MVS is irrelative with the rate of rise of the test voltage and it is directly proportional to the opening speed of the MVS. Flyback converters with universal serial bus power delivery (USB-PD) specification are widely used in low-power adapter application. The wide output voltage range operation of USB-PD makes the loop gain vary under different working conditions. To ensure stability in all working conditions, the loop gain has to be compensated based on the worst case of control-to-output transfer function. However, in other conditions, the crossover frequencies of loop gain are sacrificed, resulting in poor transient responses. This paper proposes an adaptive variable-frequency peak current mode control with constant crossover frequency to mitigate the tradeoff between stability and transient response while possessing the variable frequency characteristic to improve light load efficiency. The adaptive control law is derived from the proposed small-signal model. Experimental and simulation results verify the analysis. This paper proposes a novel dynamic ramp valley control in a current-mode adaptive on-time controller for the on-chip buck converter. It improves the system stability and reduces the output voltage under the load-dump. The proposed novel dynamic ramp valley control uses a sample and hold circuit, a comparator, and a ramp valley control to avoid the generation of an erroneous pulse signal while regulating the output voltage under the load-dump. Finally, a buck converter with 12 to 19 V input voltage range and 1.05 V output voltage with the novel dynamic ramp valley control is implemented in an integrated circuit. Based on the hardware experimental results, the output voltage under the load-dump with and without the proposed dynamic ramp valley control is 156 and 224 mV, respectively. Thus, the output voltage with the proposed dynamic ramp valley control is lower by 68 mV than that without the proposed dynamic ramp valley control, avoiding the potential damage of the output load, moreover, this performance has been verified with the SIMPLIS simulation and hardware experimental results. A decentralized control method for power module (PM) capacitor voltage and switching frequency balancing in modular multilevel converter is presented in this paper. The proposed method is composed of a central controller, six arm controllers, and several group controllers. The group controller is only in charge of the PM capacitor voltage balancing within a corresponding group, and the arm controller is in charge of the PM capacitor voltage balancing and PM switching frequency balancing among groups within an arm. A control method based on a PI controller using the average PM capacitor voltage of each group to keep voltage balancing among groups is proposed. A dynamically adjusted extra exchange number strategy based on the voltage difference of each group is also developed to balance the PM switching frequency among groups. The key advantages of the proposed method are the reduction in the number of the PM capacitor voltages that need to be transmitted and sorted in each group controller as well as the reduction of the communication burden between the group and arm controllers. The proposed method is also highly effective under PM faults. The voltage ripple factor and the PM switching frequency of the proposed method are almost identical to the conventional centralized methods. The new IEEE 1547-2018 standard includes dynamic Volt/VAr control for photovoltaic (PV) smart inverters. While recent research has addressed the problem of optimal inverter dispatch, the interaction between inverters and the classical Volt/VAr control (VVC) regulation system needs further study. This paper proposes an approach that builds on the classical VVC solution with PVs, by computing for each inverter a rule that modulates the smart inverter reactive power in function of its real power. Two approaches are presented for computing the inverter's reactive power equation slope: the first approach is based on the robust minimization of the absolute voltage magnitude deviation via a linear program, whereas the second approach yields closed-form solutions inspired from distributionally robust chance constraints. Numerical results are presented on weakly meshed distribution networks having up to 3146 nodes; they demonstrate that the voltage violations due to intermittent real power variations are significantly reduced by the decision rules as compared to maintaining the last computed VVC set-points, even when the inverters operate at constant power factor or with default Volt/VAr settings proposed in the literature; additionally, the reactive power decision rules maintain a network loss level that is close to the average from a centralized solution. The ever-increasing utilization of sensitive loads in the industrial, commercial, and residential areas in distribution networks requires enhanced reliability and quality of supply. This can be achieved, thanks to self-healing features of smart grids that already include the control technologies necessary for the restoration strategy in case of a fault. In this paper, an analytical and global optimization model is proposed for the restoration problem. A novel mathematical formulation is presented for the reconfiguration problem reducing the number of required binary variables while covering more practical scenarios compared to the existing models. The considered self-healing actions besides the network reconfiguration are the nodal load-rejection, the tap setting modification of voltage regulation devices (incl. OLTCs, SVR, and CBs), and the active/reactive power dispatch of DGs. The voltage dependency of loads is also considered. Thus, the proposed optimization problem determines the most efficient restoration plan minimizing the number of de-energized nodes with the minimum number of self-healing actions. The problem is formulated as a Mixed-Integer Second Order Cone Programming (MISOCP) and solved using the Gurobi solver via the MATLAB interface YALMIP. This paper proposes a switching strategy for the Z-source inverter (ZSI), which has unequal short-through intervals to reduce the current ripple in the inductor of its impedance source. A size reduction of the inductor of the ZSI is one of the important issues in improving the power density of the ZSI, and the inductor current ripple reduction is required to achieve it. The proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 27.8% compared with the conventional method that has equal short-through intervals without increasing the number of inverter switching. The proposed operation and ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with a 3-kW-class laboratory prototype. Three-phase voltage source pulsewidth modulation (PWM) rectifiers can achieve constant dc voltage and sinusoidal grid currents under ideal grid voltages. However, under unbalanced grid voltage conditions, there are ripples at twice the grid frequency in the dc voltage, and the grid currents become highly distorted. To address the aforementioned problems, control methods developed under ideal grid voltage conditions should be modified. Various techniques have been proposed in the literature to calculate the new current reference or power reference. However, most methods use conventional pq theory and only consider the grid-side power control. Hence, the dc voltage ripples are not completely eliminated. Furthermore, the derived mathematical expressions for reference calculations are usually very complicated. In contrast to current methods, this paper proposes a very simple yet effective direct power control (DPC) method based on extended pq theory. By analyzing the instantaneous extended power of the line inductance, a simple and concise power compensation is analytically derived and added to the original power references. As a result, the dc voltage ripples are significantly reduced, and the grid currents remain sinusoidal even under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. In this paper, a highly reliable back-to-back (BTB) power converter is proposed for doubly fed induction generator-based wind turbines (DFIG-WTs). When a power switch open-circuit fault is encountered in either the grid-side converter (GSC) or the rotor-side converter (RSC), a four-switch three-phase (FSTP) topology is formed to avoid using redundant bridge arms, which reduces the power circuit complexity and minimizes the conduction and switching losses. A simplified space vector pulsewidth modulation technique is used to eliminate sector identification and complex trigonometric calculations. In addition, the influence of dc-bus capacitor voltage unbalance on the electromagnetic torque is analyzed in detail. The offset current components are calculated, and they are deducted from the reference values in the modified control strategies to suppress the dc-bus voltage deviation. Moreover, the power loss model of a BTB converter is analyzed in detail, and the efficiency study is performed in various post-fault situations. Simulations in MATLAB/Simulink are carried out to verify the performance of a DFIG-WT based on a FSTP BTB converter. Furthermore, the control hardware-in-the-loop setup with RSC and GSC separately simulated in a digital real-time simulator is applied for experimental verification of the proposed control strategy.
