This paper takes a new look at how the aerodynamic interactions of multiple bodies in high-speed flow affect their motion behaviors. The influence of the body shape and orientation on aerodynamic and stability behavior in the case of shock–shock and wake–shock interactions is the focus of this publication. Experiments were performed in the hypersonic wind tunnel H2K at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne. Free-flight tests with tandem arrangements of spheres and cubes were performed with a synchronized dropping of both objects at various initial conditions of relative streamwise and vertical distance as well as pitch angle. A high-speed stereo-tracking captured the model motions during free-flight, and high-speed schlieren videography provided documentation of the flow topology. Based on the measured 6-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) motion data, aerodynamic coefficients were determined. As a result, the final lateral velocity of trailing cubes is found to be many times greater than that of spheres regarding shock-wave surfing. For rotating cubes, the results showed that stable shock-wave surfing can become possible over an increasingly wide range of initial positions. This study has identified that the trailing drag coefficient of two axially aligned objects varies strongly with their relative streamwise distance. In this paper, an experimental and numerical investigation of the effect of leading-edge erosion in transonic blades was performed. The measurements were carried out on a linear blade cascade in the Transonic Cascade Wind Tunnel of DLR in Cologne at two operating points with an inflow Mach number of 1.05 and 1.12. The numerical simulations were performed by ANSYS Germany. The type and specifications of the erosion for the study were derived from real engine blades and applied to the leading edges of the experimental cascade blades using a waterjet process, as well as modeled in detail and meshed within the numerical setup. Numerical simulations and extensive wake measurements were carried out on the cascades to evaluate the aerodynamic performance. The increase in losses was quantified to be 4 percent, and a reduction in deflection and a rise in pressure were detected at both operating points. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article reports on the research conducted by Nicolas von Beckerath and Dirk Taubert to assess factors why the drug clopidogrel for some individuals in Cologne, Germany. They found that polymorphisms in gene encoding of cytochrome P450 enzyme is the cause why some have lower plasma levels and at risk of heart disease. Taubert discovered that cytochrome P450 enzymes are needed in the breakdown of the drug to intermediate metabolite, but esterase transformed it to its active state.

In 1976, Prof. Wildor Hollmann's group published a paper on lactate performance tests in I Sportarzt und Sportmedizin i (Mader I et al i . 1976), 3 years after a key paper by Wasserman I et al i . on the ventilatory anaerobic threshold (Wasserman I et al i . 1973). In summary, to me the Cologne group around Profs Wildor Hollmann, Alois Mader and Hermann Heck has made important contributions to exercise physiology, including the development of modern lactate exercise testing, the conceptualization of lactate-based thresholds and a 1980s mathematical model of human energy metabolism that was far ahead of its time. The workshop program of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence's International Conference on Web and Social Media (AAAI-16) was held in Cologne, Germany. There were eight workshops in the program: CityLab, Challenges and Futures for Ethical Social Media Research, Social Media and Demographic Research, Wiki, #Fail: Things That Didn't Work Out in Social Media Research -- And What We Can Learn from Them, News and Public Opinion, Social Media in the Newsroom, and Social Web for Environmental and Ecological Monitoring. Over the year of 2015, about 800.000 refugees arrived in Germany, a number which equals around one percent of the total population. This migration process was labelled the refugee crisis and was accompanied by a contested debate. On the one hand, there was a widespread willingness to voluntarily help arriving refugees, on the other hand, the number of xenophobic attacks against refugees drastically increased. Our paper will focus on a specific form of xenophobic violence with a strong symbolic meaning: We analyze how arson attacks against collective accommodation facilities spread. Using a comprehensive web chronicle, we collected temporal and spatial data about arson attacks perpetrated on accommodations or facilities for refugees in Germany between 2015 and 2017. We counted 251 attacks, assigned each incident location to its county, merged county characteristics such as population size, proportion of foreigners, right-wing party support, and—going beyond previous research—added geographically coded media data from two digital archives. Besides newspaper contents of a popular nation-wide tabloid, we use a data base that covers local fake news on refugees. Based on these data, we constructed a balanced panel data set with the counties as geographical units and periods of 14 days as the time dimension. Results indicate that social contagion drives the diffusion process of arson attacks. Spatial proximity of previous attacks increased the propensity of attacks in the neighboring counties. Attacks were more likely to occur in counties with larger populations and fewer foreigners. While local newspaper coverage did not impact the diffusion of xenophobic attacks, fake news were relevant–but only in East Germany. We also considered two particularly salient threatening events that received nation-wide media attention, namely Merkel's "border opening" on the 5th of September 2015 and the sexual assaults occurring during New Year's 2015/16 in Cologne. From the very beginning of his studies in Northeastern Africa, Professor Michał Kobusiewicz concentrated on the prehistory of this region. His interests went beyond the Palaeolithic to encompass later periods during which the foundations were laid for the unified Egyptian state. This is well evidenced by his paper on "Neolithic and Predynastic Development in the Egyptian Nile Valley", presented at a meeting of the members of the International Commission of the Later Prehistory of Northeastern Africa in Cologne and published in 2002 (Kobusiewicz 2002). Professor Kobusiewicz delivered both a very detailed overview of the contemporary state of research on the period in question as well as an outline of the most important research problems for further investigations. Since the publication of that paper, further research on the prehistory of Northeastern Africa has shed new light on the issues pointed out by M. Kobusiewicz. The paper discusses a selection of the most popular systems classifying weather types found in climatological literature. The review focuses on the choice of meteorological elements and their value ranges as the differentiating criteria. Examples of the application of some of these systems are presented, as well as a number of possible analyses that could be attempted. In order to investigate this, use was made of 1961–2010 meteorological data from stations in Warsaw (Poland) and Cologne (Germany). It was found that the annual and long-term changes in the types of weather reflect the diversity and variability of the climate in both cities very well, and allow the stability (non-changeability) of weather to be quantified. Cities are particularly affected by climate change impacts. Due to global warming, the frequency and intensity of summer heat events increases for many cities around the globe. Urban climatological studies have shown significant positive trends in the number of hot days and tropical nights. Heat stress is an important health as well as economic risk. Thus, urban planning needs to adapt to climate change. This requires a sound scientific analysis of different adaptation measures and management options, which must be based on appropriate data, models and scenarios to assess their suitability and efficacy. The goal of this paper is to assess the suitability of a low cost weather station network consisting of 33 NETATMO weather sensors and ultrasonic anemometers to measure air temperature, relative air humidity, wind speed and wind direction of a 16 ha study area in Cologne with high temporal and spatial resolution to support microclimatological modelling. The temperature and humidity sensors were calibrated against a research grade reference sensor under laboratory conditions. In addition, a research grade meteorological station (Campbell Sci.) was set up in the study area as a reference. The NETATMO sensors were placed to identify local microclimatic effects due to different surface types, vegetation and building structures. Using descriptive statistical analyses and pairwise comparisons, significant differences in the microclimatic conditions of the various sites were found, which can clearly be attributed to specific small scale microclimate factors. Significant differences were particularly identified comparing an avenue and a narrow street as well as a backyard and an urban park area. The sensors proved to provide data reliably and with suitable quality to measure microclimatic effects. The choice of sensors lends itself well for citizen participation, needed to facilitate climate change adaptation. In our further research, the data will be used as reference data for microclimatological modelling with ENVI-met investigating particularly options of mitigating climate change effects. This paper considers the success of the thriller Der neunte Arm des Oktopus (transl.: The Ninth Arm of the Octopus, Cologne: Bastei Lübbe, November 2020) by German drugstore magnate Dirk Rossmann. Certain elements of brand-name authorship are applicable here, but the market power of Rossmann goes far beyond name recognition. Beyond the typical marketing for a 'big book' in the sense of contemporary trade publishing, Rossmann flooded the campaign with his own funds. This contribution approaches an unlikely case study through a trilateral interdisciplinary perspective (book studies, economics, law), underlining the unequal footing on which books enter the market. In many theories on the social and cultural evolution of human societies, the number and density of people living together in a given time and region is a crucial factor. Because direct data on past demographic developments are lacking, and reliability and validity of demographic proxies require careful evaluation, the topic has been approached from several different directions. This paper provides an introduction to a geostatistical approach for estimating prehistoric population size and density, the so-called Cologne Protocol and discusses underlying theoretical assumptions and upscaling transferfunctions between different spatial scale levels. We describe and compare the specifics for farming and for foraging societies and, using examples, discuss a diachronic series of estimates, covering the population dynamics of roughly 40 kyr of European prehistory. Ethnohistoric accounts, results from other approaches--including absolute (ethno-environmental models) and relative estimates (site-numbers, dates as data, etc.) allow a first positioning of the estimates within this field of research. Future enhancements, applications and testing of the Cologne Protocol are outlined and positioned within the general theoretical and methodological avenues of palaeodemographic research. Introduction: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by the presence of erythematosquamous lesions. A wide variety of topical treatments for therapy of this pathology are available, including sodium bicarbonate (SB). A few papers reported in literature focus on use of SB baths for treatment of psoriasis, but none assess evidence concerning the efficacy of SB topical preparations. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of a galenic SB in lanette vax formulation compared with lanette vax base in mild to moderate stable plaque psoriasis. Methods: A randomized, double-blind, intrapatient, controlled study was performed in 28 days. Thirty patients of both genders were selected for testing. A blinded investigator evaluated the patients' psoriasis using a modified Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), body surface area (BSA), and objective parameters using sensors (Multiprobe Adapter MPA5; Courage & Khazaka Electronic GmbH, Cologne, Germany). Results: Data analysis of objective parameters highlighted that use of the SB topical preparation led to no improvement in skin hydration, no reduction in transepidermal water loss, and no decrease of erythema. The modified PASI and BSA did not change from baseline. Conclusions: The results obtained show that use of the studied product did not improve psoriatic lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) is an early α-synucleinopathy often accompanied by incipient cognitive impairment. As executive dysfunctions predict earlier phenotypic conversion from iRBD to Parkinson's disease and Lewy body dementia, cognitive training focusing on executive functions could have disease-modifying effects for individuals with iRBD. Methods: The study CogTrAiL-RBD investigates the short- and long-term effectiveness and the feasibility and underlying neural mechanisms of a cognitive training intervention for individuals with iRBD. The intervention consists of a 5-week digital cognitive training accompanied by a module promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. In this monocentric, single-blinded, delayed-start randomized controlled trial, the intervention's effectiveness will be evaluated compared to an initially passive control group that receives the intervention in the second, open-label phase of the study. Eighty individuals with iRBD confirmed by polysomnography will be consecutively recruited from the continuously expanding iRBD cohort at the University Hospital Cologne. The evaluation will focus on cognition and additional neuropsychological and motor variables. Furthermore, the study will examine the feasibility of the intervention, effects on physical activity assessed by accelerometry, and interrogate the intervention's neural effects using magnetic resonance imaging and polysomnography. Besides, a healthy, age-matched control group (HC) will be examined at the first assessment time point, enabling a cross-sectional comparison between individuals with iRBD and HC. Discussion: This study will provide insights into whether cognitive training and psychoeducation on a healthy, active lifestyle have short- and long-term (neuro-)protective effects for individuals with iRBD. As part of the Europe-wide smart health innovation hub implemented in the context of the Horizon Europe SHIFT-HUB project, our work concerns the identification of specific medical research ecosystems in the two fields, namely cardiovascular diseases and mental illness, with Cologne as the central location. To achieve this aim, the websites of involved organizations were used for data research purposes, and the members of each respective ecosystem or network were identified by acquiring information about their cooperation partners. A variety of selection criteria have been applied to filter out whether these partners were suitable to be considered as a further starting point for the research. The results indicate the existence of ecosystems in the two fields, with Cologne as the central location, in which various stakeholders, including healthcare institutions, healthcare providers, foundations, NGOs, and the business community, work closely together. Larger institutions are usually networked at an international level, while smaller institutions increasingly depend on and foster regional partnerships. This promotes cooperation and the exchange of knowledge at the regional level and facilitates direct contact with the people affected, i.e., patients' groups. Research institutions in both fields often receive financial support from commercial organizations, which highlights the importance of the business community's involvement in exploiting research results and promoting the quality of healthcare. The article highlights the complexity and interdisciplinarity of the particular ecosystems, with all the different categories of institutions comprising an indispensable position. The interaction amongst stakeholders at international, regional, and local levels can significantly help to deploy resources more effectively and improve the quality of life of people suffering from any of the two conditions. The 2nd International FEBS‐IUBMB‐ENABLE Molecular Biosciences PhD and Postdoc Conference was held from 23rd to 25th November 2023 in Cologne, Germany. Over 240 participants from 31 different countries came together at the University of Cologne to follow the two‐day scientific symposium and the career day. This year's topic was "The emerging challenge – environmental impacts on human health". In four different sessions, eight renowned keynote speakers presented their current research. By offering flash and short talks, 39 participants were able to present their work in front of a big audience. Scientific exchange and networking were encouraged during the two poster sessions, during breaks, and the conference dinner. On the Career Day, a career fair was held and participants could attend workshops as well as career chats to improve their job prospects. The success of the series will be continued during the next conference edition: "Artificial Intelligence – Reshaping biomedical and healthcare research", which will take place 4th to 6th December 2024 in Singapore. Oncolytic viruses and combinatorial immunotherapy for cancer (this Special Issue) are both part of cancer treatment at IOZK. This review focusses on an individual multimodal cancer immunotherapy concept developed by IOZK, Cologne, Germany. The scientific rationale for employing three main components is explained: (i) oncolytic Newcastle disease virus, (ii) modulated electrohyperthermia and (iii) individual tumor antigen and oncolytic virus modified dendritic cell vaccine (IO-VACR). The strategy involves repeated cancer-immunity cycles evoked in cancer patients by systemic oncolytic virus exposure plus hyperthermia pretreatment to induce immunogenic cell death followed by intradermal IO-VACR vaccination. As an example of the experience at IOZK, we present the latest results from combining the immunotherapy with standard treatment of patients suffering from glioblastoma multiforme. The promising clinical results in terms of overall survival benefit of additional individualized multimodal immunotherapy are presented. The cancer-immunity cycle, as introduced 10 years ago, describes key important steps occurring locally at the sites of both tumor and draining lymph nodes. This view is extended here towards systemic events occuring in blood where immunogenic cell death-induced tumor antigens are transported into the bone marrow. For 20 years it has been known that bone marrow is an antigen-responsive organ in which dendritic cells present tumor antigens to T cells leading to immunological synapse formation, tumor antigen-specific T cell activation and memory T cell formation. Bone marrow is known to be the most prominent source of de novo cellular generation in the body and to play an important role for the storage and maintenance of immunological memory. This research aims at analysing the particle-laden flow of the hypersonic high-enthalpy wind tunnel L2K, situated in Köln at the German Aerospace Center (DLR). In the L2K wind tunnel, Martian atmosphere can be created, and the facility can simulate heat load conditions encountered during atmospheric entry of Martian missions. In the tests, a simplified Martian atmosphere (97% CO2 and 3% N2) was used. The high-enthalpy flow was loaded with micrometric particles of magnesium oxide. The particles' mean velocity was measured with a 2D–2C particle image velocimetry (PIV) system, in the region right downstream the nozzle expansion of the wind tunnel. The work proves the possibility of creating a high-enthalpy particle-laden flow for thermal protection systems (TPS) testing with simulated Martian atmosphere. Average particle velocities of around 2000 m/s are measured and compared with the numerical simulation of the wind tunnel's particle-free flow, and with the flow velocity measured with tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS). The study also highlights some unexpected results and features of the high-enthalpy particle-laden flow and proposes some theories for the causes of such effects, which include agglomeration due to melting, and gravitational effect. The objective of this paper is to summarize current knowledge on the possible advantages of lifestyle interventions, with particular attention to physical fitness, cognitive activity, leisure and social activity as well as nutrition. There is a large amount of published papers providing partial evidence and asserting the need for immediate, appropriate preventive lifestyle measures against dementia and AD development. Nevertheless, there are currently great difficulties in drafting effective guidelines in this field. This depends mainly upon lack of randomized controlled trials assessing benefits versus risks of particular lifestyle interventions strategies. However, due to the rapid increase of dementia burden, lifestyle factors and their amelioration should be already made part of decision making in light of their health-maintaining effects while awaiting for results of well-designed large prospective cohort studies in dementia. Crime is a huge problem in our society, and fighting it is crucial. On a daily basis, there are several crimes done on a massive scale. For future reference, a database needs to be kept of all criminal acts and acts of misconduct, as these events are unlikely to be reported later. One of the issues now encountered is keeping up with crime statistics as well as analyzing this data to assist in preventing and solving future crimes. The aim of this project is to gather and analyze datasets containing a multitude of criminal events, and to determine which kinds of criminal activity may occur in the future based on various factors. We will use Machine learning algorithms for crime prediction in Chicago by applying machine learning algorithms to the Chicago criminal data set. Decision Tree, Gaussian Naive Bayes, k-NN, Logistic Regression are all excellent supervised classification tools for this task. With this method, we are attempting to predict crimes by classifying, recognizing patterns, and using effective technologies and tools. We can correlate aspects which can aid our comprehension of future crime patterns by looking at crime data trends that have occurred in the past. Machine learning and visualization approaches are applied to estimating that crimes dispersion over an area in this project. Once the primary records are analyzed and shown based on the need, the procedure shifted to the next stage. A three-dimensional modeling of Cologne's city is constructed using crime statistics. Result visualization in geovirtual environments and real-time situation monitoring in a social protection context result from exploring crimes data analysis in geovirtual environments. Three-dimensional measurements are rapidly becoming the norm in the documenting procedure for crime scenes. Intersection traffic signal control considering vehicle emissions has become an important topic, however, the decision complexity of traffic signal control increases dramatically in a dynamic traffic environment with multi-intersections. It is a severe challenge to coordinate traffic signals at multi-intersections based on Internet of Things information to improve the traffic condition of the road network. This paper proposes a two-layer coordination algorithm based on multi-agent reinforcement learning—Multi-agent Coordinated Policy Optimization (MACoPO), for solving traffic signal control at multi-intersections. MACoPO consists of local cooperation, which adjusts the weights of individual rewards and neighborhood agents' rewards by using local cooperation factors (LCF), and global coordination, which updates the LCF to maximize global rewards. The state and reward functions are designed in terms of the current state of the signal, waiting queue length, vehicle density and emission concentration in the lane, vehicle delay, and vehicle emissions, thus making full use of the intersection state information. The proposed method is extensively assessed through simulation experiments using artificial and real road networks and the numerical results confirm its effectiveness in complex and dynamic real-time traffic environments with multi-intersections. Introduction: Indonesia is the most populous Muslim-majority country, where some women wear hijab covering their scalp and neck. Some hijab-wearing women complain of scalp problems eg, itch, dandruff, and hair loss, which might be related to severe and chronic skin barrier impairment due to occlusion. Excessive water accumulation in the occluded stratum corneum might result in increased permeability, followed by increased skin pH values. This study aimed to evaluate scalp hydration and pH values in hijab-wearing and non-hijab-wearing women.Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional comparative analytical study using stratified random sampling methods conducted on 63 subjects, who were divided into two groups, consisting of 33 hijab-wearing and 30 non-hijab-wearing women. Both groups underwent physical examination and their medical history recorded. Scalp hydration was measured using a Corneometer (Courage + Khazaka, Koln, Germany), and scalp pH value was measured using a Skin & Scalp pH Tester (Hanna Instruments® HI981037, Rumania). This study was conducted at the Dermatology and Venereology Clinic of Hasan Sadikin General Hospital Bandung.Results: The mean scalp hydration and pH values were 18.34 ± 2.91 AU and 4.93 ± 0.17, respectively, in hijab-wearing women. Meanwhile, the mean scalp hydration and pH values were 17.71 ± 3.35 AU and 4.91 ± 0.16, respectively, in non-hijab-wearing women. The difference of scalp hydration and pH values between the groups was not statistically significant based on the independent t-test, with p-values of 0.430 and 0.597, respectively.Conclusion: Scalp hydration and pH values in hijab-wearing and non-hijab-wearing women did not differ significantly. Hijab-wearing women should not worry about scalp barrier impairment as long as they do not have any history of underlying scalp and skin disorders, and do not wear hijab in wet condition. Background: Sociodemographic effects (i.e., age, gender, education) have been shown to influence neuropsychological test scores. The current retrospective, quasi-epidemiological work provides age-, gender- and education-corrected clinical norms for five common cognitive assessments. Methods: In total, test scores of 4968 patients from the University Hospital of Cologne (Department of Neurology), recruited between 2009 and 2020, were analyzed retrospectively. Conducted tests were the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), F-A-S Test (FAS), Rey–Osterrieth Complex Figure Test (ROCFT) and Trail Making Test, Part A and B (TMT-A/-B). Using multiple linear regression analyses, test scores were analyzed for sociodemographic influences (age, gender, education). Based on these analyses, norms were generated by first separating patients into different age groups stratified by educational level and (if necessary) gender. Subsequently, percentile ranks and z-scores for a subsample including only individuals without dementia were calculated. Results: Lower age and higher educational level predicted better test scores (MMSE, FAS, ROCFT) and completion times (TMT-A/-B). Additionally, produced words on the FAS and remembered drawings from the ROCFT were influenced by gender, with females having better FAS but lower ROCFT (delayed recall) scores than males. Considering these effects, clinical norms were provided for the five cognitive assessments. Conclusions: We found influences of age, gender and education on test scores, although they are frequently not or only partially considered for test score interpretation. With the provided norms, neuropsychologists can make more profound evaluations of cognitive performance. A user-friendly Microsoft Excel file is offered to assist this process. In this article, I bring premodern and contemporary Bektaşi perspectives to the current ethical debate on gender equality in the Bektaşi Sufi order. While there is tremendous potential in the historical legacy of Kadıncık Ana, the spiritual successor of Hacı Bektaş-ı Veli (d. ca. 1271), and her peers who served as female spiritual leaders in the proto-Bektaşiyye, the institutionalization of the Bektaşi order resulted in the marginalization of women and their exclusion from certain opportunities and positions in religious practice and leadership. This article explores the spiritual journey of Güllizar Cengiz (today also known as Neriman Aşki Derviș after becoming a Bektaşi "dervish"), including her foundation of an Alevi-Bektaşi cultural institute in Cologne, Germany, in 1997 and the opening of a Bektaşi Sufi lodge (dergah) in the Westerwald near Bonn in 2006. I explore the impact of Hacı Bektaş's teaching that both men and women have the same spiritual potential to become the ultimately ungendered insan-ı kamil, or spiritually and ethically completed human being. I also discuss the time-honored Bektaşi principle of "moving with the times and staying one step ahead of the times" and how it can inform contemporary understandings of ethical and spiritual prerogatives within Bektaşism. The automotive industry has been transformed through technological progress during the past decade. Vehicles are equipped with multiple computing devices that offer safety, driving assistance, or multimedia services. Despite these advancements, when an incident occurs, such as a car crash, the involved parties often do not take advantage of the technological capabilities of modern vehicles and attempt to assign liability for the incident to a specific vehicle based upon witness statements. In this paper, we propose a secure, decentralized, blockchain-based platform that can be employed to store encrypted position and velocity values for vehicles in a smart city environment. Such data can be decrypted when the need arises, either through the vehicle driver's consent or through the consensus of different authorities. The proposed platform also offers an automated way to resolve disputes between involved parties. A simulation has been conducted upon a mobility traffic dataset for a typical day in the city of Cologne to assess the applicability of the proposed methodology to real-world scenarios and the infrastructure requirements that such an application would have. Railway noise interferes with daytime activities and disturbs sleep leading to annoyance of exposed residents. The main objective of this paper was to establish exposure-response relationships between nocturnal railway noise exposure and annoyance and to examine self-reported sleep disturbances as short-term reactions to noise. In a field study 33 residents living close to railway tracks in the Cologne/Bonn area (Germany) were investigated. Railway noise was measured indoors during nine consecutive nights at each site. Questionnaires referring to annoyance and non-acoustical factors were performed. Annoyance ratings increased significantly with the total number of trains and freight trains per night, and non-significantly with rising number of passenger trains and energy equivalent sound pressure level (LAeq), when adjusting the model for non-acoustical variables. The total number of trains and the number of freight trains also significantly affected self-reported awakening frequency, but no other aspects of subjective sleep disturbances. Background: The application of polyhydroxy acids and alpha‐hydroxy acids to the skin is often used in cosmetology. To enhance the effect of gluconolactone chemical peeling, a combined method including water‐oxygen oxybrasion or microneedle mesotherapy can be used. Objectives: To evaluate skin parameters such as hydration, sebum, pH and TEWL after application of a 10% gluconolactone chemical peel in combination with oxybrasion and microneedling. Materials and methods: Twenty‐one Caucasian women participated in the study. A series of three split face treatments was carried out at 1‐week intervals. Oxybrasion was performed on the right side of the face and micro‐needle mesotherapy on the left side. A 10% gluconolactone solution was applied to the entire face. Before the first and third treatments and 2 weeks after the last treatment, skin parameters were evaluated. Photographic documentation was also made before and after the treatment series. Results and conclusion: Evaluation of skin parameters using Courage & Khazaka 580 Multi Probe Adapter probes (Courage + Khazaka electronic GmbH, Cologne, Germany) showed an increase in hydration and a decrease in sebum, pH and TEWL for both treatments. There were no statistically significant differences between the treatments. Combining chemical peeling of gluconolactone with oxybrasion and microneedle mesotherapy is a good method to seal the hydrolipid barrier and increase skin hydration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The FEBS‐IUBMB‐ENABLE 1st International Molecular Biosciences PhD and Postdoc Conference was held in Seville, Spain, from the 16–18th of November 2022. Nearly 300 participants from all over the globe were welcomed by the host institution, the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville (IBiS). Following the theme "The perfect tandem: How technology expands the frontiers of biomedicine", the Scientific Symposium of the conference hosted eight world‐renowned keynote speakers who presented their work in one of the four sessions: Innovation, Basic Research, Translational and Clinical Research, and Computational Biology and Artificial Intelligence. Participants had the chance to present their research to their peers: more than 200 posters were presented during the dedicated poster sessions and 19 selected PhD students and postdocs presented their work as short talks. The Career Day featured a wide range of workshops fully devoted to trainees' professional development, as well as a job fair and career chats with professionals to discuss future perspectives. Besides, several outreach activities were organised before and during the conference to engage with the general public and bring science closer to society. Background: Citizen science as an approach to merge society and science is not a new paradigm. Yet it is not common in public health, epidemiology, or medical sciences. SMARAGD (Sensors for Measuring Aerosols and ReActive Gases to Deduce health effects) assesses air pollution at participants' homes or workplaces in Cologne, Germany, as feasibility study with a citizen science approach. Personal exposure to air pollutants is difficult to study, because the distribution of pollutants is heterogeneous, especially in urban areas. Targeted data collection allows to establish connections between air pollutant concentration and the health of the study population. Air pollution is among the most urgent health risks worldwide. Yet links of individualized pollution levels and respiratory infections remain to be validated, which also applies for the feasibility of the citizen science approach for epidemiological studies. Methods: We co-designed a prospective feasibility study with two groups of volunteers from Cologne, Germany. These citizen scientists and researchers determined that low-cost air-quality sensors (hereafter low-cost sensors) were to be mounted at participants' homes/workplaces to acquire stationary data. The advantage of deploying low-cost sensors is the achievable physical proximity to the participants providing health data. Recruitment started in March 2021 and is currently ongoing (as of 09/22). Sensor units specifically developed for this study using commercially available electronic sensor components will measure particulate matter and trace gases such as ozone, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. Health data are collected using the eResearch system "Prospective Management and Monitoring-App" (PIA). Due to the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, we also focus on COVID-19 as respiratory infection. Discussion: Citizen science offers many benefits for science in general but also for epidemiological studies. It provides scientific information to society, enables scientific thinking in critical discourses, can counter anti-scientific ideologies, and takes into account the interests of society. However, it poses many challenges, as it requires extensive resources from researchers and society and can raise concerns regarding data protection and methodological challenges such as selection bias. This paper presents a life cycle assessment (LCA) of photovoltaic (PV) solar modules which have been integrated into electric vehicle applications, also called vehicle integrated photovoltaics (VIPV). The LCA was executed by means of GaBi LCA software with Ecoinvent v2.2 as a background database, with a focus on the global warming potential (GWP). A light utility electric vehicle (LUV) named StreetScooter Work L, with a PV array of 930 Wp, was analyzed for the location of Cologne, Germany. An operation time of 8 years and an average shadowing factor of 30% were assumed. The functional unit of this LCA is 1 kWh of generated PV electricity on-board, for which an emission factor of 0.357 kg CO2-eq/kWh was calculated, whereas the average grid emissions would be 0.435 kg CO2-eq/kWh. Hence, charging by PV power hence causes lower emissions than charging an EV by the grid. The study further shows how changes in the shadowing factor, operation time, and other aspects affect vehicle's emissions. The ecological benefit of charging by PV modules as compared to grid charging is negated when the shadowing factor exceeds 40% and hence exceeds emissions of 0.435 kg CO2-eq/kWh. However, if the operation time of a vehicle with integrated PV is prolonged to 12 years, emissions of the functional unit go down to 0.221 kg CO2-eq/kWh. It is relevant to point out that the outcomes of the LCA study strongly depend on the location of use of the vehicle, the annual irradiation, and the carbon footprint of the grid on that location. Patients with muscle-invasive urothelial carcinoma achieving pathological complete response (pCR) upon neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) have improved prognosis. Molecular subtypes of bladder cancer differ markedly regarding sensitivity to cisplatin-based chemotherapy and harbor FGFR treatment targets to various content. The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether preoperative assessment of molecular subtype as well as FGFR target gene expression is predictive for therapeutic outcome—rate of ypT0 status—to justify subsequent prospective validation within the "BladderBRIDGister". Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue specimens from transurethral bladder tumor resections (TUR) prior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy and corresponding radical cystectomy samples after chemotherapy of 36 patients were retrospectively collected. RNA from FFPE tissues were extracted by commercial kits, Relative gene expression of subtyping markers (e.g., KRT5, KRT20) and target genes (FGFR1, FGFR3) was analyzed by standardized RT-qPCR systems (STRATIFYER Molecular Pathology GmbH, Cologne). Spearman correlation, Kruskal–Wallis, Mann–Whitney and sensitivity/specificity tests were performed by JMP 9.0.0 (SAS software). The neoadjuvant cohort consisted of 36 patients (median age: 69, male 83% vs. female 17%) with 92% of patients being node-negative during radical cystectomy after 1 to 4 cycles of NAC. When comparing pretreatment with post-treatment samples, the median expression of KRT20 dropped most significantly from DCT 37.38 to 30.65, which compares with a 128-fold decrease. The reduction in gene expression was modest for other luminal marker genes (GATA3 6.8-fold, ERBB2 6.3-fold). In contrast, FGFR1 mRNA expression increased from 33.28 to 35.88 (~6.8-fold increase). Spearman correlation revealed positive association of pretreatment KRT20 mRNA levels with achieving pCR (r = 0.3072: p = 0.0684), whereas pretreatment FGFR1 mRNA was associated with resistance to chemotherapy (r = −0.6418: p < 0.0001). Hierarchical clustering identified luminal tumors of high KRT20 mRNA expression being associated with high pCR rate (10/16; 63%), while the double-negative subgroup with high FGFR1 expression did not respond with pCR (0/9; 0%). Molecular subtyping distinguishes patients with high probability of response from tumors as resistant to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Targeting FGFR1 in less-differentiated bladder cancer subgroups may sensitize tumors for adopted treatments or subsequent chemotherapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Hürthle cell carcinoma (HCC) of the thyroid is rare. There are contrasting data on its clinical behavior. The aim of this study was to describe clinic-pathological features and outcomes of HCC patients at our institution, in order to adapt our surgical management. Methods: We retrospectively studied 51 cases of HCC treated at the interdisciplinary endocrine center of the University Hospital of Cologne, Germany between 2005 and 2020. Results: Patients median age was 63 years (range 29-78) with 64.7% of cases being female. Primary treatment included surgery and postoperative radioiodine therapy with 3.7 GBq in all patients. Surgery consisted of total thyroidectomy in all cases and additional central lymphadenectomy in 90.2% of cases. The median number of harvested lymph nodes was 11 (range 2-31). Lymph node involvement was found in two (4.3%) pT4a tumors. In all other cases (95.7%), central lymphadenectomy was prophylactic and lymph nodes were free of metastasis in final histopathology. Twelve (23.5%) patients with incomplete biochemical response to primary treatment were diagnosed with structural relapse during the course of disease, for which seven (58.4%) underwent resection of isolated cervical metastasis. Histopathology revealed soft tissue implants in all cases and cervical surgery led to biochemical and radiologic cure in only two (28.5%) cases. Five (41.6%) patients developed metastatic disease, followed by systemic therapy in two patients. Vascular invasion of the primary tumor was significantly associated with relapse (p<0.01). Conclusions: Recurrence of HCC was common in this study. Given the low rate of lymph node metastases both in this study and in recent literature and the nature of relapse (soft tissue instead of nodal metastasis), the benefit of routine prophylactic central lymph node dissection for HCC remains unclear, especially in the absence of vascular invasion from the primary tumor. The method of facet-cutting was invented in the 1st century AD. The glass cutters began to create zoned facet-cut decoration to arrange the facets in horizontal zones divided by linear grooves mostly in Isings 96 bowl in the second half of 2nd century and first half of 3rd century AD. A look at the distribution and the major concentrations of sites reveals that they had been manufactured in four main regions: the Rhine region (perhaps at Cologne), Pannonia, Syria (possibly at Dura Europos) and the Pontic, at Tanais. Its popularity is best indicated by the fact that this elegant ornamental technique began to be applied on silverware which clearly imitated the glass bowls, as shown by the adoption of the Isings 96 hemispherical bowl form that was lacking from among silver vessels. The influence of the flight attitude on aerodynamic coefficients and static stability of cylindrical bodies in hypersonic flows is of interest in understanding the re/entry of space debris, meteoroid fragments, launch-vehicle stages and other rotating objects. Experiments were therefore carried out in the hypersonic wind tunnel H2K at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Cologne. A free-flight technique was employed in H2K, which enables a continuous rotation of the cylinder without any sting interferences in a broad angular range from 0 ∘ to 90 ∘ . A high-speed stereo-tracking technique measured the model motion during free-flight and high-speed schlieren provided documentation of the flow topology. Aerodynamic coefficients were determined in careful post-processing, based on the measured 6-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) motion data. Numerical simulations by NASA's flow solvers Cart3D and US3D were performed for comparison purposes. As a result, the experimental and numerical data show a good agreement. The inclination of the cylinder strongly effects both the flowfield and aerodynamic loads. Experiments and simulations with concave cylinders showed marked difference in aerodynamic behavior due to the presence of a shock–shock interaction (SSI) near the middle of the model. We established a new laboratory for noble gas mass spectrometry that is dedicated to the development and application to cosmogenic nuclides at the University of Cologne (Germany). At the core of the laboratory are a state-of-the-art high-mass-resolution multicollector Helix MC Plus (Thermo Fisher Scientific) noble gas mass spectrometer and a novel custom-designed automated extraction line. The mass spectrometer is equipped with five combined Faraday multiplier collectors, with 1012 and 1013 Ω preamplifiers for faraday collectors. We describe the extraction line and the automated procedure for cosmogenic neon and the current performance of the experimental set-up. Performance tests were conducted using gas of atmospheric isotopic composition (our primary standard gas), as well as CREU-1 intercomparison material, containing a mixture of neon of atmospheric and cosmogenic composition. We use the results from repeated analysis of CREU-1 to assess the performance of the current experimental set-up at Cologne. The precision in determining the abundance of cosmogenic 21Ne is equal to or better than those reported for other laboratories. The absolute value we obtain for the concentration of cosmogenic 21Ne in CREU is indistinguishable from the published value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to assess the biophysical parameters of the skin in Polish Konik horses (Polish primitive horses). According to the authors, this is the first assessment performed on such a wide scale in this group of animals. The evaluation carried out is innovative both with regards to the breed of the animals and the wide scope of the physicochemical skin assessment. The study group comprised mares, stallions and geldings, and the evaluations concerned transepidermal water loss, corneometry, pH, skin temperature assessment and mexametry. These parameters were assessed in five skin regions: the lips, the right ear, the prosternum, the right side of the neck and the chest. The measurements were taken after spreading the hair apart, with the use of a Multiprobe Adapter System (MPA®) and dedicated probes (Courage + Khazaka electronic GmbH, Cologne, Germany). The measurements revealed statistically significant differences in the values of transepidermal water loss in the lips in mares compared with stallions (P = 0.023) and also in stallions compared with geldings (P = 0.009). Corneometry showed significantly higher results in the neck region in mares compared with stallions (P = 0.037) and the prosternum areas in mares and geldings compared with stallions (P = 0.037 and P = 0.018). Skin pH measurement on the right side of the neck rendered significantly higher values in stallions than in mares (P = 0.037). In geldings, the skin temperature was significantly higher than in stallions (P = 0.049). Once the appropriate physicochemical values for specific animal species and breeds are determined, non-invasive methods of skin examination in many diseases and also methods of evaluation of the efficacy and/or adverse effects of applied medications can be established. Background: During the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic a mass casualty incident of ambulatory patients occurred at the COVID-19 rapid response infrastructure (CRRI) facility at the University Hospital of Cologne (UHC). We report the development of a patient-centred mobile-device solution to support efficient management of the facility, triage of patients and rapid delivery of test results.Methods: The UHC-Corona Web Tool (CWT) was developed as a web-based software useable on each patient's smartphone. It provides, among others, a self-reported medical history including type and duration of symptoms and potential risk contacts and links all retrieved information to the digital patient chart via a QR code. It provides scheduling of outpatient appointments and automated transmission of SARS-CoV-2 test results.Results: The UHC-CWT was launched on 9 April 2020. It was used by 28,652 patients until 31 August 2020. Of those, 15,245 (53,2%) consulted the CRRI, representing 43,1% of all CRRI patients during the observed period. There were 8304 (29,0%) specifications concerning travel history and 17,145 (59,8%) indications of ≥1 symptom of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The most frequently indicated symptoms were sore throat (60,0%), headache (50,7%), common cold (45,1%) and cough (42,6%) while 11,057 (40,2%) patients did not report any symptoms. After implementation of the UHC-CWT, the amount of patient contacts per physician rose from 38 to 98,7 per day. The personnel for communication of test results were reduced from four on seven days to one on five days.Conclusion: The UHC-CWT is an effective digital solution for management of large numbers of outpatients for SARS-CoV-2 testing. Presents information on the book "Family, Commerce, and Religion in London and Cologne: Anglo-German Emigrants," by Joseph P. Huffman. The book investigates relations between England and the German city of Cologne from 1000 to 1300, through a case study of economic, political, social, and religious ties between England and Cologne. The book discusses the London guildhall and Cologne's rise to dominance, both economic and political, among the cities of Germany in the eleventh and twelfth centuries; the rise of the Hansa towns and the decline of Cologne's dominance in the thirteenth century; Anglo- German currency exchanges; the formation of individual and family identity in medieval Cologne as revealed by property holding, inheritance, and surnames; the social, economic, and legal status of the English in Cologne during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; Cologne families with English connections; Cologners in England; and the variety of religious and cut tural exchanges between Cologne and the English kingdom.

Food waste prevention has gained greater relevance on the political agenda over the last decade. However, the involvement of municipal actors in pushing the issue forward has been comparatively limited. Based on the cases of the German cities of Munich and Cologne, this paper examines the possible approaches to prevent food waste at the municipal level and their relevance on the local agenda. It first proposes a definition of local food waste prevention policies and presents an overview of options for municipal actors. Based on the analysis of own interview data and secondary sources, it then applies Kingdon's Multiple Streams Framework to gain insights on the agenda-setting processes in the two cities concerning the issue. The results suggest that policy entrepreneurs, a strategic framing, and networking with other political levels favour the rise of food waste prevention on the local agenda. The main hindering factors identified are problem load and budgetary constraints, as well as the lack of strong political interest groups and a perceived spatial mismatch between problem and solutions. The findings provide starting points for (i) the further investigation of the so far under-researched potentials and limitations of municipal food waste prevention as well as for (ii) local (network) activities which strengthen food waste prevention on the level of municipalities. • The agenda success of municipal food waste prevention measures strongly depends on a persistent policy entrepreneur. • The framing of food waste is more important for its rise on the local agenda than evidence about the scale of the problem. • Parallel enabling dynamics on other governmental levels are important for the rise of food waste prevention on local agendas. • Strong interest groups that strategically frame municipal food waste prevention make local agenda change more likely. This review article deals with the current state of knowledge on the topic of launching new products on the market and the success factors that constitute launch success. As things stand today, it can be stated that the existing research work already covers a broad range of topics and that there is an extended pool of relevant results, which, however, appear rather confusing for the most part due to the lack of comparability of methods and indicators and a large number of specific topics dealt with. It also reveals many gaps of science for future research. The method of this article uses integrative review approach with elements of semi-structured methods to analyse the content of studies concerning the research topic and is thus providing an up-to-date overview of the object of research, which reflects the state-of-the-art on questions relevant to practice and science. Therefore, databases like Google scholar and the university catalogues of the university in Dortmund and Cologne have been used, focussing only on sources that were also listed in Scopus and the Web of Science. The current change through megatrends like the digitalization is also taken into account. Literature on this topic is evaluated to determine the influence of current and future megatrends on the optimal design of product launches. The result is that on the one hand there is already a secure pool of success factors, best-practice methods, typologies and investigation of phenomena encompassing the product launch. On the other hand, the introduction of products to the market is a complex process whose orientation towards the maximum prospects of success must be individually aligned to the respective specifics of the market, product, business model and target group (internal and external), so that there can be no general recipe for success, which applies to every situation.
