Maladaptive drinking is an increasing concern among military policy makers and healthcare providers. The goal of this study was to assess how social and psychological factors relate to alcohol problems among post-deployed US veterans and how problematic drinking is associated with well-being. Data were collected via a telephone survey from a random sample of veterans receiving their healthcare from a large non-VA hospital system in central Pennsylvania (N = 1730). Interviewers inquired about participants' current alcohol consumption, using the CAGE and AUDIT-C scales, and health-related outcomes (general psychological distress, major depression, and self-reported health status). Analyses included demographic, military and nonmilitary stressful events, use of alcohol or drugs to cope post-deployment, use of psychiatric services, and personality characteristics as independent variables. Our sample was 95% male, 96% White, and had a mean age of 59 years old (SD = 12 years). Analyses for our drinking measures show that those who used drugs or alcohol to cope post-deployment were more likely to be problematic drinkers, while positive personality characteristics such as agreeableness and conscientiousness were related to fewer drinking problems. Multivariate logistic regressions for our well-being measures found that alcohol misuse was not related to distress or depression, but that a positive score on the AUDIT-C was associated with a lower likelihood of poor self-rated health. Using alcohol or drugs to cope was related to higher distress. We conclude that service providers might consider using post-deployment AUDIT-C and the drugs and alcohol coping questions when screening for possible alcohol and mental health problems among veterans. The underutilization of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among cisgender women in the U.S. limits this population's ability to reduce their risk for HIV infection, especially within the unique individual, social and structural systems they navigate. There is a need to identify the relevant multi-level barriers and facilitators to PrEP use among cisgender women to inform theory-guided efforts that address HIV disparities by race/ethnicity among cisgender women. Guided by the Integrated Behavioral Model and the Behavioral Model of Vulnerble Populations we conducted 41 interviews with PrEP eligible cisgender women in New York City and Philadelphia. Directed content analysis identified 11 modal behavioral beliefs crucial to PrEP uptake, including anticipated negative social consequences, 5 normative beliefs centered on available social supports, and 9 control beliefs such as anticipated barriers such as cost. Awareness and knowledge of PrEP as a biobehavioral HIV prevention method is limited for this sample. Through conventional content analysis we identified interpersonal and structural barriers to PrEP uptake including lack of partner support, transportation, mental health challenges, and challenges in accessing PrEP care. Background: Evidence suggests that men can play a key role in influencing maternal health behaviours, potentially affecting birthing outcomes. However, that role may not be fostered in safety net programmes like the Special Supplemental Nutrition programme for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), a programme for which men do not qualify. Purpose: The primary objective of this research was to explore the experiences, expectations, and attitudes of men towards WIC. Methods: This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews of couples recruited at Philadelphia WIC. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Eight couples completed the interviews (16 independent interviews). Among participating fathers, only two fully participated in WIC. Barriers to participation was the primary theme identified as participants shared challenges from multiple sources. Subthemes, including fears of coercion, masculinity, and the unacknowledged role of fathers illustrated that these barriers were both internal and external to WIC and in alignment with the framework of the social ecological model (SEM). Conclusion: These findings indicate that paternal involvement is limited due to numerous barriers, including those attributable to WIC. Future research should investigate these barriers and their intersectionality, as well as the appropriateness of WIC as an organization to foster paternal involvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
