Objectives: This study aimed to compare the skin closure time, postoperative pain and the scar outcome between tissue adhesive and sub-cuticular sutures in thyroid surgery. Methods: This study was conducted in Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, a tertiary care hospital in India from March 2017 to December 2019. Adult patients undergoing thyroid surgery were included while those with previous neck surgery, history of keloids/hypertrophic scars and those undergoing concomitant neck dissections were excluded. Following platysma closure, patients were randomised into two groups (tissue adhesive and subcuticular sutures) using the Serially Numbered Opaque Sealed Envelopes technique. A sample size of 64 in each group was calculated for this prospective, single-blinded and randomised controlled trial. The primary outcome was the skin closure time. The secondary outcomes were postoperative pain at 24 hours and scar scoring at 1st and 3rd postoperative month. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS software. Results: A total sample of 124 patients were included in this study, with 61 patients assigned to the suture group and 63 assigned to the tissue adhesive group. The median skin closure time and postoperative pain was significantly lower in the tissue adhesive group as compared to the suture group (P <0.01). There was no statistically significant difference in scar outcome at the 1st or 3rd months between both groups (P = 0.088 and 0.137, respectively). There were no wound-related complications in either group. When a subgroup analysis was conducted, no difference was seen in the scar outcome or wound-related complications in patients with comorbidities. There were no instances of allergic contact dermatitis to the tissue adhesive. Conclusion: The use of tissue adhesive leads to lower operative time and less postoperative pain in thyroid surgeries. Adhesive capsulitis shoulder is a common problem of patients presenting with shoulder pain and disability. The approach to such patients includes a variety of modalities. This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in the treatment. A literature search was performed between January 2010 and 30 May 2022. MeSH terms used were 'Platelet-rich plasma' OR 'PRP' AND 'Frozen shoulder' OR 'Adhesive capsulitis shoulder' OR 'Periarthritis shoulder'. The search included published articles in the English language involving human subjects. Studies evaluating other types of shoulder disorders, in vitro studies, review articles, animal-model studies, and pre-clinical trials were excluded. The data regarding study characteristics, efficacy, and safety outcomes were analyzed. A total of 11 studies with 347 patients over 10 years were finally included in this review. Most publications were in 2019 and 2020, mostly from India. This review included seven comparative studies, three case series, and one case report. In seven studies, a single intra-articular PRP injection was administered, whereas in the rest of the studies two or multiple injections were given. Only one study demonstrated an equivocal efficacy of PRP and steroid intra-articular injection. The rest all depicted better clinical and functional outcomes with the PRP injection. Only one study compared the outcomes of hydro-dissection treatment in adhesive capsulitis with the intra-articular PRP injection. The rest all either examined PRP alone or compared it with the steroid intra-articular injection. None of the studies showed any major side effects. The intra-articular injections of PRP in the management of adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder provide a new treatment approach. Further studies are required to ascertain the efficacy and safety of the PRP intraarticular injection as a management alternative in adhesive capsulitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Dental adhesives are used for a wide range of clinical applications in dentistry. Bonding is required in direct composite resin restorations. In clinical situation, resin to dentin bonds are less resistant than resin to enamel bonds. Because of varying structure and composition of dentin the failure of resin-dentin bonding resulting in staining, caries recurrence microleakage. These set of circumstances can hasten the failure and degradation of resin to dentin bonding hence inorganic fillers can be added to improve the bond strength. Cerium dioxide (CeO2) is a rare earth oxide has been increasingly used as a nanotherapeutic material and can be successfully used in adhesive resin to improve the physical properties of adhesive resin. Aim: To evaluate and compare microshear bond strength of adhesive resin after incorporation of inorganic nanofillers cerium dioxide. Materials and Methods: This in-vitro study was conducted in Department of Preventive and Paediatric Dentistry at School of Dental Sciences, Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Karad, Maharashtra, India, from February 2022 to April 2022. The unfilled dental adhesive was used as a control (group A) and dental adhesives formulated with nanosized Cerium dioxide (CeO2) as the inorganic filler (group B). Total 24 samples were prepared 12 samples each group and adhesives were evaluated for microshear bond strength. Intragroup comparison between experimental and control group was done using Unpaired t-test. Results: The mean microshear bond strength of the adhesive system containing nanosized cerium dioxide at a concentration of 2% was 6.89±2.22 MPa (group B), which was significantly greater than that of the adhesive system without additives (group A) 4.37±1.22 MPa. Conclusion: Microshear bond strength of the dental adhesives with nanosized CeO2 particles, was significantly higher than the unfilled adhesive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Statement of the Problem The efficacy of various decontamination protocols to reverse the effect of blood contamination after acid-etching may depend on the type of adhesive. Objectives To compare the effect of blood contamination and various decontamination protocols on acetone-based and ethanol-based total-etch adhesive systems. Methods Occlusal dentin of 64 human molars was etched and contaminated with fresh human blood. The samples were assigned to two groups as per adhesive used: Prime & Bond NT (acetone-based) and Adper Single Bond 2 (ethanol-based) and then subdivided into eight groups: (1) control, (2) no decontamination, (3) water rinsing, (4) re-etching, (5) sodium hypochlorite, (6) sodium hypochlorite/sodium ascorbate, (7) hydrogen peroxide, and (8) ethanol. Adhesives were applied and specimens were prepared for μTBS after composite buildup. The data were subjected to analysis of variance followed by post hoc Tukey test. Results Blood contamination significantly reduced μTBS of both the adhesives. Re-etching and NaOCl/Asc were effective in restoring μTBS to the level of control for both the adhesives whereas NaOCl was effective only for Prime & Bond NT. Conclusion Both re-etching and NaOCl can be used for regaining μ TBS of blood-contaminated acid-etched dentin. NaOCl/Asc yields better results than NaOCl alone, specifically for ethanol-based adhesive. Clinical Significance Knowing the adverse effects of prolonged acid-etching, other alternatives for decontamination of etched dentin after blood contamination should be considered. NaOCl alone or NaOCl followed by sodium ascorbate may prove to be good alternatives. These choices also may determine the type of adhesive system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
