Whenever a new supervised machine learning (ML) algorithm or solution is developed, it is imperative to evaluate the predictive performance it attains for diverse datasets. This is done in order to stress test the strengths and weaknesses of the novel algorithms and provide evidence for situations in which they are most useful. A common practice is to gather some datasets from public benchmark repositories for such an evaluation. But little or no specific criteria are used in the selection of these datasets, which is often ad-hoc. In this paper, the importance of gathering a diverse benchmark of datasets in order to properly evaluate ML models and really understand their capabilities is investigated. Leveraging from meta-learning studies evaluating the diversity of public repositories of datasets, this paper introduces an optimization method to choose varied classification and regression datasets from a pool of candidate datasets. The method is based on maximum coverage, circular packing, and the meta-heuristic Lichtenberg Algorithm for ensuring that diverse datasets able to challenge the ML algorithms more broadly are chosen. The selections were compared experimentally with a random selection of datasets and with clustering by k-medoids and proved to be more effective regarding the diversity of the chosen benchmarks and the ability to challenge the ML algorithms at different levels. This paper proposes a new method for encryption of RGB color images by combining two encryption approaches: the spatial approach and the transformation approach. The proposed method uses the 3D fractional modified Henon map (3D FrMHM) and the discrete fractional Krawtchouk moments (FrDKM). We have also proposed a new hybrid optimization algorithm (H-SSAOA) to optimize the parameters of the proposed Henon map and the parameters of the Krawtchouk fractional moments. This algorithm is based on the hybridization of two metaheuristic algorithms: the "Salp Swarm Algorithm" (SSA) and the "Arithmetic Optimization Algorithm" (AOA). The simulation results reveal the optimization efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm H-SSAOA compared to other meta-heuristic algorithms and the efficiency of the suggested encryption method for encrypting RGB color images in terms of sensitivity to the security key and resistance to different attacks. Since the past few years, several metaheuristic algorithms, inspired by the natural processes, have been introduced to solve different complex optimization problems. Studying and comparing the convergence, computational burden and statistical significance of those metaheuristics are helpful for future algorithmic development and their applications. This paper focuses on comparing the optimization performance of classical dragonfly algorithm (DA) and its seven different variants, i.e., hybrid memory-based dragonfly algorithm with differential evolution (DADE), quantum-behaved and Gaussian mutational dragonfly algorithm (QGDA), memory-based hybrid dragonfly algorithm (MHDA), chaotic dragonfly algorithm (CDA), biogeography-based Mexican hat wavelet dragonfly algorithm (BMDA), hybrid Nelder–Mead algorithm and dragonfly algorithm (INMDA) and hybridization of dragonfly algorithm and artificial bee colony (HDA) while solving 80 CEC-2021 benchmark problems. It is observed that the convergence rates of different variants of DA algorithm vary, and the corresponding computational times for such variations are also evaluated. Recently, substantial progress has been made in developing efficient algorithms for solving combinatorial optimization problems. In this paper, following this direction, the problem of designing supply chains which is an important combinatorial optimization problem is considered. The structural properties of supply chain models are investigated to transform such models into a generalized network optimization model. The transformation to a generalized network optimization model reduces the algorithms' solution time. Moreover, this paper proposes a new efficient hybrid algorithm based on tabu search and generalized network simplex algorithm (GN-TSA) for designing multi-objectives supply chain models. The developed algorithm's parameters are tuned properly, validated, and evaluated. The algorithm's performance is then compared to an exact algorithm embedded in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) and two metaheuristic algorithms, namely a linear programming simplex algorithm integrated with the tabu search approach (LP-TSA) and simulated annealing. The findings indicated that the GN-TSA obtains solutions very close to the exact algorithm with less computation time. In addition, the proposed algorithm outperforms the LP-TSA and simulated annealing in terms of computation time, while the quality of the solutions is the same as solutions obtained by LP-TSA and better than simulated annealing. This paper proposes the Love Evolution Algorithm (LEA), a novel evolutionary algorithm inspired by the stimulus–value–role theory. The optimization process of the LEA includes three phases: stimulus, value, and role. Both partners evolve through these phases and benefit from them regardless of the outcome of the relationship. This inspiration is abstracted into mathematical models for global optimization. The efficiency of the LEA is validated through numerical experiments with CEC2017 benchmark functions, outperforming seven metaheuristic algorithms as evidenced by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test and the Friedman test. Further tests using the CEC2022 benchmark functions confirm the competitiveness of the LEA compared to seven state-of-the-art metaheuristics. Lastly, the study extends to real-world problems, demonstrating the performance of the LEA across eight diverse engineering problems. This paper provides an in-depth literature review of the Black Hole Algorithm (BHA) which is considered as a recent metaheuristic. BHA has been proven to be very efficient in different applications. There has been several modifications and variants of this algorithm in the literature, so this work reviews various variants of the BHA. The applications of BHA in engineering problems, clustering, task scheduling, image processing, etc. have been thoroughly reviewed as well. This review article sheds lights on the pros and cons of this algorithm and enables finding a right variant of this algorithm for a certain application area. In this paper, a new population initialization method for metaheuristic algorithms is proposed. In our approach, the initial set of candidate solutions is obtained through the sampling of the objective function with the use of the Metropolis–Hastings technique. Under this method, the set of initial solutions adopts a value close to the prominent values of the objective function to be optimized. Different from most of the initialization methods that consider only spatial distribution, in our algorithm, the initial points represent promising regions of the search space, which deserve to be exploited to identify the global optimum. These characteristics allow the proposed approach obtains a faster convergence and improves the quality of the produced solutions. With the objective to demonstrate the capacities of our initialization method, it has been embedded in the classical Differential Evolution algorithm. To evaluate its performance, the complete system has been tested in a set of representative benchmark functions extracted from several datasets. The chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that imitates chimpanzees' individual intelligence and hunting behaviors. In this algorithm, the hunting process consists of four steps: driving, blocking, chasing, and attacking. Because of the novelty of ChOA, the steps of the hunting process have been modeled in the simplest possible way, leading to slow and premature convergence similar to other iterative algorithms. This paper proposes six spiral functions and introduces two novel hybrid spiral functions (SEB-ChOA) to rectify the abovementioned deficiencies. The SEB-ChOAs' performance is evaluated on 23 standard benchmarks, 20 benchmarks of IEEE CEC-2005, 10 cases of IEEE CEC06-2019 test-suite, and 12 constrained real-world engineering problems of IEEE CEC-2020. The SEB-ChOAs are compared with three groups of optimization algorithms, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) as the most well-known optimization algorithms, Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Ant Lion Optimization (ALO), Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO), as almost novel optimization algorithms, and jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12, as winners of IEEE CEC06-2019 competition, and also EBOwithCMAR and CIPDE as superior secondary optimization algorithms. The SEB-ChOAs reached the first rank among almost all benchmarks and demonstrated very competitive results compared to jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 as the best-performing optimizers. Statistical evidence shows that the SEB-ChOA outperforms the PSO, GA, SMA, MPA, ALO, and HGSO optimizers while producing results comparable to those of the jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 algorithms. Teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) algorithm is a novel population-oriented meta-heuristic algorithm. In this paper, we introduce an improved teaching–learning-based algorithm (ITLBO) and combine it with numerical methods to solve some problems of nonlinear inverse partial differential equations. The basic TLBO algorithm has been enhance to increase its exploration and optimization capacities as well as diversity, increase the number of solutions and further converge to the appropriate solution by introducing the concept of grouping, elitism, elite group, elitism rate and the number of teachers. The most important advantage in implementing this scheme is that in addition to the fact that we have improved the TLBO algorithm with a new method, without guessing the type of answer function or the type of unknown function of the nonlinear inverse problems, we can determine the unknown and the answer of the inverse problems with great accuracy by optimizing the initial numerical values in a given interval. Furthermore, the experimental results on CEC benchmark function verify the feasibility and optimization performance of ITLBO. Sine Cosine Algorithm (SCA) is a recent meta-heuristic algorithm inspired by the proprieties of trigonometric sine and cosine functions. Since its introduction by Mirjalili in 2016, SCA has attracted great attention from researchers and has been widely used to solve different optimization problems in several fields. This attention is due to its reasonable execution time, good convergence acceleration rate, and high efficiency compared to several well-regarded optimization algorithms available in the literature. This paper presents a brief overview of the basic SCA and its variants divided into modified, multi-objective, and hybridized versions. Furthermore, the applications of SCA in several domains such as classification, image processing, robot path planning, scheduling, radial distribution networks, and other engineering problems are described. This paper demonstrates an application of the improved crow search algorithm (I-CSA), which is a modified version of the crow search algorithm (CSA). CSA is a recent, nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization algorithm. I-CSA differs from CSA by allowing application on a discrete problem, which is P-median and fortifying faster convergence to an optimal or near-optimal solution. Improvements are provided by local searches which support escaping from local optima or convergence to the optimal solution, elitism enhances the intensification through the utilization of nodes by selecting the most frequent centers that appeared in hiding better locations for local search, on the P-median problem. The application of the I-CSA is structured in three phases. In the first phase, parameters of I-CSA are analyzed and optimized using well-known data tests. The test datasets for the application of I-CSA on the P-median problem were retrieved from the OR-library to present the effectiveness and applicability of I-CSA. In the second phase, 40-pmed test problems from the library are solved using I-CSA and the results are compared with known optimal results and recorded results of other meta-heuristic approaches. In addition, Wilcoxon signed-rank test is applied in order to demonstrate the performance of I-CSA compared to well-known algorithms. The results of the proposed method demonstrated a faster convergence rate and better solution in most cases when compared with the standard CSA and other well-known meta-heuristic approaches. Finally, the proposed I-CSA approach is tested on a real-life case problem including 2121 nodes in Tunceli, Turkey. Obtaining the optimal results in a reasonable time indicates that the potential of the I-CSA is high and promising. This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. The data explosion caused by the Internet and its applications has given researchers immense scope for data analysis. A large amount of data is available in form of images. Image processing is required for better understandability of an image. Various image processing steps are available for improving the image in different application areas. Various applications like medical imaging, face recognition, biometric security, and traffic surveillance, etc. depend only on image and its analysis. This analysis in several applications is highly dependent on the outcome of image segmentation. This paper focuses on good segmentation through multi-level thresholding. In this research, the algorithm includes two modules related to Entropy and variance. The first module is concerned with the modified firefly algorithm (FA) with Kapur's, Tsallis, and Fuzzy Entropy. FA is used to optimize fuzzy parameters for obtaining optimal thresholds. The second module is derived from the principle of variance between two classes known as between variance or inter-cluster variance. The opposition-based the learning method is used for initializing the population of candidate solutions and levying flight and local search is implemented with FA. The various experiments have been performed on Berkeley and benchmark images with distinct threshold (i.e. 2, 3, 4, 5) values. The proposed algorithm has been estimated and compared with known metaheuristic optimization methods like particle swarm optimization (PSO) and electromagnetism optimization (EMO). The results have been assessed quantitatively and qualitatively by using parameters like Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structured similarity index metric (SSIM), objective function values, and convergence curve. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. This paper presents a novel meta-heuristic algorithm called Ali Baba and the forty thieves (AFT) for solving global optimization problems. Recall the famous tale of Ali Baba and the forty thieves, where Ali Baba once saw a gang of forty thieves enter a strange cave filled with all kinds of treasures. The strategies pursued by the forty thieves in the search for Ali Baba inspired us to design ideas and underlie the basic concepts to put forward the mathematical models and implement the exploration and exploitation processes of the proposed algorithm. The performance of the AFT algorithm was assessed on a set of basic benchmark test functions and two more challenging benchmarks called IEEE CEC-2017 and IEEE CEC-C06 2019 benchmark test functions. These benchmarks cover simple and complex test functions with various dimensions and levels of complexity. An extensive comparative study was performed between the AFT algorithm and other well-studied algorithms, and the significance of the results was proved by statistical test methods. To study the potential performance of AFT, its further development is discussed and carried out from five aspects. Finally, the applicability of the AFT algorithm was subsequently demonstrated in solving five engineering design problems. This paper designed an advanced hybrid algorithm (haDEPSO) to solve the optimization problems, based on multi-population approach. It integrated with suggested advanced DE (aDE) and PSO (aPSO). Where in aDE a novel mutation strategy and crossover probability along with the slightly changed selection scheme are introduced, to avoid premature convergence. And aPSO consists of the novel gradually varying inertia weight and acceleration coefficient parameters, to escape stagnation. So, convergence characteristic of aDE and aPSO provides different approximation to the solution space. Thus, haDEPSO achieve better solutions due to integrating merits of aDE and aPSO. Also in haDEPSO individual population is merged with other in a pre-defined manner, to balance between global and local search capability. The algorithms efficiency is verified through 23 basic, 30 CEC 2014 and 30 CEC 2017 test suite and comparing the results with various state-of-the-art algorithms. The numerical, statistical and graphical analysis shows the effectiveness of these algorithms in terms of accuracy and convergence speed. Finally, three real world problems have been solved to confirm problem-solving capability of proposed algorithms. Effectiveness of any swarm based metaheuristic optimization algorithm focuses on perfect mishmash of operator's castoff for exploration and exploitation. The absenteeism of balance between this two factors leads to deprived performance in terms of attaining global optimum by stagnating in local optimum and untimely convergence. Salp Swarm Algorithm (SSA) is a recently evolved optimization technique, intended to resolve continuous, non-linear and multifaceted real world optimization glitches. For solving complex day to day life problems the explorative strength of existing SSA is not adequate. So, this paper proposes a new improved algorithm termed as OBL-MO-SSA to enhance the performance of existing SSA. Two techniques such as normal distributed mutation operator and oppositional learning concept is embedded to achieve the purpose. Oppositional learning concept ensures the current as well as opposite candidate solutions in the search region simultaneously to evaluate the closer solutions during ongoing evolution process. Mutation operator avoids the arbitrary positions in the search region by choosing lesser and larger mutations for balanced motion in current and opposite directions. The proposed method OBL-MO-SSA improves the exploration and exploitation strength inside search region at the same time exhibiting better convergence speed by successfully avoiding local optima stagnation. To confirm the efficiency of proposed OBL-MO-SSA algorithm, the same is assessed by benchmark problems pertaining to IEEE-CEC-2017. The competence and strength of the proposed OBL-MO-SSA is characterised by using performance metrics, complexity analysis, convergence rate and statistical significance. Friedman and Holms test has been accomplished to substantiate its statistical significance. This paper presents a powerful swarm intelligence metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization. The formulation is through modifying the existing Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The original Cat Swarm Optimization suffers from the shortcoming of "premature convergence," which is the possibility of entrapment in local optima which usually happens due to the off balance between exploration and exploitation phases. Therefore, the proposed algorithm suggests a new method to provide a proper balance between these phases by modifying the selection scheme and the seeking mode of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 classical test functions, 10 modern test functions (CEC 2019) and a real-world scenario are used. In addition, the dimension-wise diversity metric is used to measure the percentage of the exploration and exploitation phases. The optimization results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which ranks first compared to several well-known algorithms available in the literature. Furthermore, statistical methods and graphs are also used to further confirm the outperformance of the algorithm. In this paper, an evolutionary optimization procedure is presented to generate band-pass metasurface-based filters in terahertz regime. As a measure of novelty, pass-band, transition, and out-band characteristics are investigated separately, all of which result in different metasurfaces for filtering applications. The presented approach is defined based on random hill climbing algorithm, regarding the established link between Matlab and HFSS software. A metasurface-based filter with specific properties is considered as the main problem to be solved by the optimization method. Moreover, the fuzzy theory, mean square method, and weighting coefficient procedure are considered to define an efficient fitness function evaluation approach. Also, a step-by-step procedure is used to generate desired structures with a great note of efficiency. The final generated structure has magnificent characteristics including sharp transitions together with transmittance around 0.68 and less than 0.04 at pass-band and out-band regions, respectively. Feature transformation methods can be used effectively to improve the performance of the machine learning techniques, such as classification and clustering, via enhancing the discrimination among the samples. Additionally, binary representation of features may be necessary in several circumstances. For example, distributed systems may have limited bandwidth, storage, and energy that necessitate rough quantization of the measurements. This paper proposes a random projection-based feature transformation method that maps the data points from the original space into a new binary space. In the proposed transformation method, the random projection process is formulated as an optimization problem. A modified chaotic version of the sine–cosine algorithm is used to find the optimal random projector. The performance of the proposed transformation method is validated using 15 standard UCI benchmark datasets against the linear discernment analysis. Moreover, it is compared to other metaheuristic-based feature reduction methods including the gray wolf optimizer, the genetic algorithm, and the antlion optimizer. In recent decades, researches on optimizing the parameter of the artificial neural network (ANN) model has attracted significant attention from researchers. Hybridization of superior algorithms helps improving optimization performance and capable of solving complex applications. As a traditional gradient-based learning algorithm, ANN suffers from a slow learning rate and is easily trapped in local minima when training techniques such as gradient descent (GD) and back-propagation (BP) algorithm are used. The characteristics of randomization and selection of the best or near-optimal solution of metaheuristic algorithm provide an effective and robust solution; therefore, it has always been used in training of ANN to improve and overcome the above problems. New metaheuristic algorithms are proposed every year. Therefore, the review of its latest developments is essential. This article attempts to summarize the metaheuristic algorithms which have been proposed from the year 1975 to 2020 from various journals, conferences, technical papers, and books. The comparison of the popularity of the metaheuristic algorithm is presented in two time frames, such as algorithms proposed in the recent 20 years and those proposed earlier. Then, some of the popular metaheuristic algorithms and their working principle are reviewed. This article further categorizes the latest metaheuristic search algorithm in the literature to indicate their efficiency in training ANN for various industry applications. More and more researchers tend to develop new hybrid optimization tools by combining two or more metaheuristic algorithms to optimize the training parameters of ANN. Generally, the algorithm's optimal performance must be able to achieve a fine balance of their exploration and exploitation characteristics. This paper proposes a novel metaheuristic-based optimization technique called search space reduction (SSR) optimization algorithm. This algorithm attempts to solve the common pitfalls in the existing algorithms in the literature by randomly generating the search agents in every iteration instead of following the best solution. This new algorithm is simple, computationally efficient, which is based on the concept of reducing the search space. The performance of this algorithm is tested over classical test functions and CEC'17 benchmark test functions. The results are compared with well-established algorithms in the literature. The test results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits good exploration and exploitation capabilities. Heuristic algorithms can give optimal solutions for low, middle, and large scale optimization problems in an acceptable time. The social spider algorithm (SSA) is one of the recent meta-heuristic algorithms that imitate the behaviors of the spider to perform global optimization. The original study of this algorithm was proposed to solve low scale continuous problems, and it is not be solved to middle and large scale continuous problems. In this paper, we have improved the SSA and have solved middle and large scale continuous problems, too. By adding two new techniques to the original SSA, the performance of the original SSA has been improved and it is named as an improved SSA (ISSA). In this paper, various unimodal and multimodal standard benchmark functions for low, middle, and large-scale optimization are studied for displaying the performance of ISSA. ISSA's performance is also compared with the well-known and new evolutionary methods in the literature. The difficulty and complexity of the real-world numerical optimization problems has grown manifold, which demands efficient optimization methods. To date, various metaheuristic approaches have been introduced, but only a few have earned recognition in research community. In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm called Archimedes optimization algorithm (AOA) is introduced to solve the optimization problems. AOA is devised with inspirations from an interesting law of physics Archimedes' Principle. It imitates the principle of buoyant force exerted upward on an object, partially or fully immersed in fluid, is proportional to weight of the displaced fluid. To evaluate performance, the proposed AOA algorithm is tested on CEC'17 test suite and four engineering design problems. The solutions obtained with AOA have outperformed well-known state-of-the-art and recently introduced metaheuristic algorithms such genetic algorithms (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolution variants L-SHADE and LSHADE-EpSin, whale optimization algorithm (WOA), sine-cosine algorithm (SCA), Harris' hawk optimization (HHO), and equilibrium optimizer (EO). In this paper, a hybrid bio-inspired metaheuristic optimization approach namely emperor penguin and salp swarm algorithm (ESA) is proposed. This algorithm imitates the huddling and swarm behaviors of emperor penguin optimizer and salp swarm algorithm, respectively. The efficiency of the proposed ESA is evaluated using scalability analysis, convergence analysis, sensitivity analysis, and ANOVA test analysis on 53 benchmark test functions including classical and IEEE CEC-2017. The effectiveness of ESA is compared with well-known metaheuristics in terms of the optimal solution. The proposed ESA is also applied on six constrained and one unconstrained engineering problems to evaluate its robustness. In this paper, a new metaheuristic algorithm called JAYA algorithm has been adapted for feature selection. Feature selection is a typical problem in machine learning and data mining domain concerned with determining the subset of high discriminative features from the irrelevant, noisy, redundant, and high-dimensional features. JAYA algorithm is initially proposed for continuous optimization. Due to the binary nature of the feature selection problem, the JAYA algorithm is adjusted using sinusoidal (i.e., S-shape) transfer function. Furthermore, the mutation operator controlled by adaptive mutation rate ( R m ) parameter is also utilized to control the diversity during the search. The proposed binary JAYA algorithm with adaptive mutation is called BJAM algorithm. The performance of BJAM algorithm is tested using 22 real-world benchmark datasets, which vary in terms of the number of features and the number of instances. Four measures are used for performance analysis: classification accuracy, number of features, fitness values, and computational times. Initially, a comparison between binary JAYA (BJA) algorithm and the proposed BJAM algorithm is conducted to show the effect of the mutation operator in the convergence behavior. After that, the results produced by the BJAM algorithm are compared against those yielded by ten state-of-the-art methods. Surprisingly, the proposed BJAM algorithm is able to excel other comparative methods in 7 out of 22 datasets in terms of classification accuracy. This can lead to the conclusion that the proposed BJAM algorithm is an efficient algorithm for the problems belonging to the feature selection domain and is pregnant with fruitful results. Due to the lack of experience and prior knowledge, the selection of the most informative features has become one of the challenging problems in many applications. Recently, many metaheuristic algorithms have widely used to solve the feature selection problem for classification tasks. In this paper, the chaotic atom search optimization (CASO) that integrates the chaotic maps into atom search optimization (ASO) is applied for wrapper feature selection. Twelve different chaotic maps are used to adjust the parameter of CASO through the optimization process, which is beneficial for enhancing the convergence rate and improving the efficiency of ASO algorithm. In this study, twenty benchmark datasets acquired from the UCI machine learning repository are used to validate the performance of CASO in feature selection. Several state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms are adopted to examine the efficacy and effectiveness of the proposed approach. Our results indicated that the Logistic-Tent map was the most suitable chaotic map to boost the performance of CASO. The experimental result shows the capability of CASO not only in finding the optimal solution but also in significantly improving the prediction accuracy and reducing the number of features. Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms have significantly influenced the optimization problems, and there has been a great success in finding optimum solutions. The main aim of this paper is to introduce one such technique, runner-root algorithm (RRA), to the antenna community. RRA is based on the concept of plant intelligence to solve an optimization problem resembling a scenario where a plant finds the best location for its survival. The main advantage of RRA over other algorithms is the execution of exploration (global search) and exploitation (local search) phases independently with a built-in mechanism of reinitialization to overcome trapping in local minima. Hence, attempt has been made for the first time to apply this algorithm to optimize excitation current amplitudes and positions of antenna elements for linear array configurations with the objective of suppressing the sidelobe levels and/or placing nulls at prescribed locations referring to the radiation patterns. Different case studies have illustrated that RRA is capable of performing linear antenna array optimization with promising results in comparison with other well-established metaheuristic algorithms. Firefly algorithm is a swarm based metaheuristic algorithm designed for continuous optimization problems. It works by following better solutions and also with a random search mechanism. It has been successfully used in different problems arising in different disciplines and also modified for discrete problems. Unlike its easiness to understand and to implement; its effectiveness is highly affected by the parameter values. In addition modifying the search mechanism may give better performance. Hence different modified versions are introduced to overcome its limitations and increase its performance. In this paper, the modifications done on firefly algorithm for continuous optimization problems will be reviewed with a critical analysis. A detailed discussion on the modifications with possible future works will also be presented. In addition a comparative study will be conducted using forty benchmark problems with different dimensions based on ten base functions. The result shows that some of the modified versions produce superior results with a tradeoff of high computational time. In linear registration, a floating image is spatially aligned with a reference image after performing a series of linear metric transformations. Additionally, linear registration is mainly considered a preprocessing version of nonrigid registration. To better accomplish the task of finding the optimal transformation in pairwise intensity-based medical image registration, in this work, we present an optimization algorithm called the normal vibration distribution search-based differential evolution algorithm (NVSA), which is modified from the Bernstein search-based differential evolution (BSD) algorithm. We redesign the search pattern of the BSD algorithm and import several control parameters as part of the fine-tuning process to reduce the difficulty of the algorithm. In this study, 23 classic optimization functions and 16 real-world patients (resulting in 41 multimodal registration scenarios) are used in experiments performed to statistically investigate the problem solving ability of the NVSA. Nine metaheuristic algorithms are used in the conducted experiments. When compared to the commonly utilized registration methods, such as ANTS, Elastix, and FSL, our method achieves better registration performance on the RIRE dataset. Moreover, we prove that our method can perform well with or without its initial spatial transformation in terms of different evaluation indicators, demonstrating its versatility and robustness for various clinical needs and applications. For a stable system frequency without any problems, the generation and demand equation must always be balanced. But the difficulty of precisely predicting the changes in the load is a big problem. Here comes the responsibility of the load frequency control (LFC) loop to maintain the equality between supply and demand. The LFC loop's performance depends on the control technique or controller used. In our work, we propose a new cascade controller PD-P-PID that is applied in LFC applications for the first time. To obtain the optimum settings of our cascade controller, we used an optimization method called the marine predators algorithm (MPA). To verify the robustness of our controller, it was tested on three different systems: a single-area multi-source power system, a two-area multi-source power system with AC–DC tie-lines, and a three-area hydro-thermal power system with the generation rate constraints and Governor dead band taken into account for a more practical study. The obtained results are compared with many published works based on objective function integral time absolute error, settling time Ts, and overshoot/undershoot of frequency and tie-line power deviation. MPA-tuned PID-PD controllers offer superior performance to other literature as it gives a dynamic response with a shorter settling time and fewer frequency and tie-line power deviation oscillations when step loads are perturbed. Vehicle ad hoc networks, also known as VANETs, are characterized by their dynamic nature, exceptional mobility, and random network architecture. The functionality of the Transmission Head Arrangement on WSN can be hindered by a number of problems, some of which include frequent connection delinquencies, adaptabilities, various-bounce, data transfer, and data loss. In order to solve the issue, the authors of this work propose implementing a portability-aware region occupied routing in VANET. As the ideal approach for routing, a hybrid optimization strategy is implemented. The hybrid technique achieves optimal outcomes by employing both ant colony optimization (ACO) and artificial bee colony optimization (ABCO). When constructing the fitness function, connection stability and residual energy were both taken into account. Various indicators, including the delivery ratio, the amount of time, and the overhead expenditures, are used to evaluate the plan's effectiveness. Feature Selection (FS) aims to ameliorate the classification rate of dataset models by selecting only a small set of appropriate features from the initial range of features. In consequence, a reliable optimization method is needed to deal with the matters involved in this problem. Often, traditional methods fail to optimally reduce the high dimensionality of the feature space of complex datasets, which lead to the elicitation of weak classification models. Meta-heuristics can offer a favorable classification rate for high-dimensional datasets. Here, a binary version of a new human-based algorithm named Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (AFT) was applied to tackle a pool of FS problems. Although AFT is an efficient meta-heuristic for optimizing many problems, it sometimes exhibits premature convergence and low search performance. These issues were mitigated by proposing three enhanced versions of AFT, namely: (1) A Binary Multi-layered AFT called BMAFT which uses hierarchical and distributed frameworks, (2) Binary Elitist AFT (BEAFT) which uses an elitist learning strategy, and, (3) Binary Self-adaptive AFT (BSAFT) which uses an adapted tracking distance parameter. These versions along with the basic Binary AFT (BAFT) were expansively assessed on twenty-four problems gathered from different repositories. The results showed that the proposed algorithms substantially enhance the performance of BAFT in terms of convergence speed and solution accuracy. On top of that, the overall results showed that BMAFT is the most competitive, which provided the best results with excellent performance scores compared to other competing algorithms. This study presents a boxing match algorithm (BMA) as a new efficient meta-heuristic method to solve numerical optimization and NP-hard problems, such as knapsack. The proposed algorithm finds the best position (i.e., best solution) in the ring during the match (i.e., feasible solutions) through a simulation of the boxer's behavior, who can attract good support from his coach and fans to defeat his rival. The proposed algorithm is seeking good solutions by dividing the solution space into different sections and generating new solutions in each section through a semi-zigzag search. This division causes a proper and targeted search in the solution space to reach an efficient solution. Also, the unique boxer's movement in the ring (generating new solutions) enables the proposed BMA to give an acceptable level of performance in exploring the problem space. Several unconstrained mathematical, knapsack, and engineering benchmark problems undergo a standard test designed to confirm the powerful performance of the proposed BMA. A wide variety of complex numerical problems are solved and analyzed by a comparison between the results obtained from the test and the other well-known optimization methods. Quantitative data also indicate the proper performance of the proposed algorithm compared to the other ones. The results show that this algorithm can achieve 95% and 100% optimal solutions in 20 mathematical benchmark functions and eight examples of the knapsack problem, respectively. One of the challenges of deploying multitenant cloud-hosted services that are designed to use (or be integrated with) several components is how to implement the required degree of isolation between the components when there is a change in the workload. Achieving the highest degree of isolation implies deploying a component exclusively for one tenant; which leads to high resource consumption and running cost per component. A low degree of isolation allows sharing of resources which could possibly reduce cost, but with known limitations of performance and security interference. This paper presents a model-based algorithm together with four variants of a metaheuristic that can be used with it, to provide near-optimal solutions for deploying components of a cloud-hosted application in a way that guarantees multitenancy isolation. When the workload changes, the model-based algorithm solves an open multiclass QN model to determine the average number of requests that can access the components and then uses a metaheuristic to provide near-optimal solutions for deploying the components. Performance evaluation showed that the obtained solutions had low variability and percent deviation when compared to the reference/optimal solution. In this article, we study an Inventory Routing Problem with deterministic customer demand in a two-tier supply chain. The supply chain network consists of a supplier using a single vehicle with a given capacity to deliver a single product type to multiple customers. We are interested in population-based algorithms to solve our problem. A Memetic Algorithm (MA) is developed based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Variable Neighborhood Search methods. The proposed meta-heuristics are tested on small and large reference benchmarks. The results of the MA are compared to those of the classical GA and to the optimal solutions in the literature. The marine predator algorithm is a new nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm that mimics biological interaction between marine predators and prey. It has been also stated from the literature that this algorithm can solve many real-world optimization problems which made it a new popular optimization technique for the researchers. However, there is still a deficiency in the marine predator algorithm such as the inability to produce a diverse initial population with high productivity, lack of quick escaping of the local optimization, and lack of widely and broadly exploration of the search space. In the present study, a developed version of this algorithm is proposed based on the opposition-based learning method, chaos map, self-adaptive of population, and switching between exploration and exploitation phases. The simulations are performed using MATLAB environment on standard test functions including CEC-06 2019 tests and a real-world optimization problem based on PID control applied to a DC motor to evaluate the performance of the suggested algorithm. The simulation results are compared with the original marine predator algorithm and five state-of-the-art optimization algorithms namely Particle Swarm Optimization, Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm, JAYA Algorithm, Equilibrium optimizer Algorithm, Whale Optimization Algorithm, Differential Search Algorithm, and League Championship Algorithm. Swarm algorithms belong to the class of population metaheuristic optimization methods. Despite the use of various metaphors, most swarm algorithms have similar structures, where one can distinguish common components such as the decision population initialization, decision diversification, and decision intensification. Based on the concept of generality, an analysis of key approaches to, methods for, and ways of increasing the efficiency of swarm optimization algorithms was carried out. In the survey, swarm optimization algorithms are viewed as a set of operators without a detailed discussion of each algorithm. The main focus is on the analysis of the key components of the algorithms. The main idea behind efficiency improvement is to maintain a balance between diversification and intensification. In this context, we consider mechanisms for supporting population diversity, methods for tuning and adjusting the swarm algorithm parameters, and approaches to hybridization of algorithms. Firefly algorithm has shown good performance for solving various optimization problems. Most of the nature-inspired algorithms have the same problem which can easily trap in local optimal. To overcome this defect, a novel personalized step strategy for firefly algorithm (PSSFA) is presented. It uses large step for the optimal firefly and linearly decreasing step for the other fireflies to improve the ability of exploration. Experiments on 20 test functions show that the proposed algorithm can promote accuracy of the original method. Finally, we integrate PSSFA with k-means clustering for five datasets. Sentiment analysis is a popular application of data mining, where the information regarding the customer's emotions or attitude is extracted by applying various methods or techniques. Credit scoring is a process of calculating the risk associated with an applicant on the basis of applicant's credentials such as social status, financial status, etc. and it plays a vital role to improve cash flow for financial industry. Optimization methods are used to solve many problems and, under certain constraints, can provide the best possible results. They are inspired by the behavior of living things in nature and called metaheuristic algorithms. The population-based tree–seed algorithm (TSA) is an example of these algorithms and is used to solve continuous optimization problems that have recently emerged. This method, inspired by the relationship between trees and seeds, produces a certain number of seeds for each tree during each iteration. In this study, during seed formation in the TSA, trees were selected using the tournament selection method rather than by random means. Efforts were also made to enhance high-dimensional solutions, utilizing problem dimensions, D, of 20, 50, 100 and 1000 by optimizing the search tendency parameter within the structure of the algorithm, resulting in a modified TSA (MTSA). Empirical test data, convergence graphs and box plots were obtained by applying the MTSA to numerical benchmark functions. In addition, the results of the current algorithms in the literature were compared with the MTSA and the statistical test results were presented. Monarch butterfly optimization algorithm (MBO) has recently been proposed as a robust metaheuristic optimization algorithm for solving numerical global optimization problems. To enhance the performance of MBO algorithm, harmony search (HS) is introduced as a mutation operator during the adjusting operator of MBO. A novel hybrid metaheuristic optimization method, the so-called HMBO, is introduced to find the best solution for the global optimization problems. HMBO combines HS exploration with MBO exploitation, and therefore, it produces potential candidate solutions. The implementation process for enhancing MBO method is also presented. To evaluate the effectiveness of this improvement, fourteen standard benchmark functions are used. The mean and the best performance of these benchmark functions in 20, 50, and 100 dimensions demonstrated that HMBO often performs better than the original MBO and other population-based optimization algorithms such as ACO, BBO, DE, ES, GAPBIL, PSO and SGA. Moreover, the t-test result proved that the performance differences between the enhanced HMBO and the original MBO as well as the other optimization methods are statistically significant.
