Cellulose electro-active paper (EAPap) is an attractive material of electro-active polymers (EAPs) family due to its smart characteristics. EAPap is thin cellulose film coated with metal electrodes on both sides. Its large displacement output, low actuation voltage and low power consumption can be used for biomimetic sensors/actuators and electromechanical system. Because cellulose EAPap is ultra-lightweight, easy to manufacture, inexpensive, biocompatible, and biodegradable, it has been employed for many applications such as bending actuator, vibration sensor, artificial muscle, flexible speaker, and can be advantageous in areas such as micro-insect robots, micro-flying objects, microelectromechanical systems, biosensors, and flexible displays.

Liquid-phase exfoliation of few-layer graphene in Coca-Cola ® was performed by a kitchen blender for rapid preparation of strain/light/humidity sensitive ink. The advantages of Coca-Cola as an exfoliating medium have been identified from the low structural defect (I D /I G = 0.39) and, moderate carbon to oxygen ratio (C/O = 2.6) obtained by the resulting graphene. It is discovered that a deposition of graphene on photo paper allowed a facile fabrication of smart paper that is able to detect minor strain (0 – 2.0%) with GF of 18.7. Meanwhile, the multi-responsiveness of ink towards light/humidity had been validated from the 10 s response time after the exposure to stimulants with the maximum resulting curvature degree of 16° and 14° under light and humidity changes, respectively. Finally, it is shown that our actuator is able to vertically lift a load (545 mg) from its initial flat position upon irradiation of light (200 mW/cm2). [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human muscles can grow and change their length with body development; therefore, artificial muscles that modulate their morphology according to changing needs are needed. In this paper, we report a strategy to transform an artificial muscle into a new muscle with a different morphology by thermodynamic-twist coupling, and illustrate its structural evolution during actuation. The muscle length can be continuously modulated over a large temperature range, and actuation occurs by continuously changing the temperature. This strategy is applicable to different actuation modes, including tensile elongation, tensile contraction and torsional rotation. This is realized by twist insertion into a fibre to produce torsional stress. Fibre annealing causes partial thermodynamic relaxation of the spiral molecular chains, which serves as internal tethering and inhibits fibre twist release, thus producing a self-supporting artificial muscle that actuates under heating. At a sufficiently high temperature, further relaxation of the spiral molecular chains occurs, resulting in a new muscle with a different length. Leveraging advances in shape memory alloys (SMAs) and flexible thermoelectric devices (f-TEDs), this paper presents a structural and functional integrity composite sheet to address the inefficient and bulky activation of 2-D SMAs. A series of experimental tests were performed to reveal the generation, change, and transfer mechanisms of different types of electrically-induced heat in the f-TED, as well as the temperature-induced SMA phase transformation behaviors. The results show that the composite sheet exhibited good bidirectional thermal management capacity. The austenite deformation can be completed within 10s at an operating current of 2 A. The cooling recovery, in particular, performs much better than in conventional modes (the temperature declines exponentially with time). Finally, through two functional prototypes, a light switch and a flexible gripper, the application potential of the proposed composite was further experimentally demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the rapid development of intelligent technology and the pursuit of green environmental protection, responsive materials with single response and actuation can no longer meet the requirements of modern technology for intelligence, diversification, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, intelligent responsive materials have received much attention. In recent years, with the development of new materials and technologies, cellulose materials have become increasingly used as responsive materials due to their advantages of sustainability and renewability. This review summarizes the relevant research on cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials in recent years. According to the stimuli responses, they are divided into temperature-, light-, electrical-, magnetic-, and humidity-responsive types. The response mechanism, application status, and development trend of cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials are summarized. Finally, the future perspectives on the preparation and applications of cellulose-based intelligent responsive materials are presented for future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Animals can incorporate large numbers of actuators because of the characteristics of muscles; whereas, robots cannot, as typical motors tend to be large, heavy, and inefficient. However, shape-memory alloys (SMA), materials that contract during heating because of change in their crystal structure, provide another option. SMA, though, is unidirectional and therefore requires an additional force to reset (extend) the actuator, which is typically provided by springs or antagonistic actuation. These strategies, however, tend to limit the actuator's work output and functionality as their force–displacement relationships typically produce increasing resistive force with limited variability. In contrast, magnetic springs—composed of permanent magnets, where the interaction force between magnets mimics a spring force—have much more variable force–displacement relationships and scale well with SMA. However, as of yet, no method for designing magnetic springs for SMA-actuators has been demonstrated. Therefore, in this paper, we present a new methodology to tailor magnetic springs to the characteristics of these actuators, with experimental results both for the device and robot-integrated SMA-actuators. We found magnetic building blocks, based on sets of permanent magnets, which are well-suited to SMAs and have the potential to incorporate features such as holding force, state transitioning, friction minimization, auto-alignment, and self-mounting. We show magnetic springs that vary by more than 3 N in 750  $\mu$ m and two SMA-actuated devices that allow the MultiMo-Bat to reach heights of up to 4.5 m without, and 3.6 m with, integrated gliding airfoils. Our results demonstrate the potential of this methodology to add previously impossible functionality to smart material actuators. We anticipate this methodology will inspire broader consideration of the use of magnetic springs in miniature robots and further study of the potential of tailored magnetic springs throughout mechanical systems. With the development of micromotion actuation technology, smart material-based actuators are more promising in micro/nanopositioning field. As a typical example of smart material-based actuators, magnetical shape memory alloy actuator has been applied in nanopositioning stages due to its extremely innovative properties such as high precision nanoscale positioning and large stroke. However, the inherent hysteresis nonlinearity of the magnetical shape memory alloy material affects the performance of the magnetical shape memory alloy-based actuator in the field of high precision positioning. The hysteresis characteristics of the magnetical shape memory alloybased actuator are related to many factors. This paper is devoted to study the effect of driving signal and external temperature on the displacement of the magnetical shape memory alloy-based actuator. Firstly, the structure and principle of the magnetical shape memory alloy-based actuator are introduced. Then the displacement curves of the magnetical shape memory alloy-based actuator are tested under different input frequencies, amplitudes, and environment temperatures. The local actuation of a magnetic shape memory (MSM) element as used in an MSM micropump is considered. This paper presents the difference between an electromagnetic driver and a driver that uses a rotating permanent magnet. For the magnetic field energy of the permanent magnetic drive, the element takes in a significant stray field. In a particular case, energy reduction was 12.7 mJ. For an electromagnetic drive with an identical size of the MSM element, the total magnetic field energy created by the system was 2.28 mJ. Attempts to experimentally nucleate twins in an MSM element by energizing an electromagnetic drive failed even though the local magnetic field exceeded the magnetic switching field. The energy variation is an order of magnitude smaller for the electromagnetic drive, and it does not generate the necessary driving force. It was assumed in previous work that the so-called magnetic switching field presents a sufficient requirement to nucleate a twin and, thus, to locally actuate an MSM element. The ever-changing nature of the power industry will require the implementation of hybrid energy systems. Integration of tightly coupled components in hybrids often involves the diversion of exhaust gas flow. An innovative smart material actuation technology is proposed to replace traditional electro-mechanical actuated valve mechanisms with lighter and less expensive actuators. A shape memory alloy (SMA) spring-actuated valve was designed for high-temperature service to demonstrate the promise of smart materials in control valve applications. With SMA springs only generating a maximum force of 3.2 N, an innovative valve design was necessary. To demonstrate the concept, a 3-inch Nominal Pipe Size valve was designed, and 3D printed using the stereolithography technique. Increasing the electrical current to actuate the SMA springs reduced actuation time. The maximum current of 10 A produced the lowest actuation time of 2.85 s, with an observed maximum stroke rate of more than 100 stroke completion %/s (considering actuation open/close as 100% stroke) at the midrange. The final assembly of the valve was estimated to provide a cost reduction of more than 30% and a weight reduction of more than 80% compared to the other available automatic valves in the present market. The modern industrial and consumer applications in accordance with the concepts of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things are characterized by autonomy and self-sufficiency. This has led to an increase in the interest for the so-called smart materials, capable of combining the functionalities of sensors, actuators and, in some applications, control systems. An important group of smart materials are shape-memory alloys, among which nickel–titanium (NiTi) alloys are the most known. In this article, the influence of phase transformation on the mechanical properties of thin NiTi alloy wires was investigated. During the test, the influence of the heating currents on the displacement and the force generated by the thin NiTi wires were analyzed. The temperature of the wires during heating was measured by a thermographic camera. This study proved the maximum value of the wires' displacement was related to the value of the heating current. During the research, the dependence of the transformation dynamics on the value of the heating currents was also proved. In addition, the influence of the surface inhomogeneity of the thin NiTi alloy wires on the accuracy of the thermographic measurements was analyzed. We report the synthesis of cellulose membranes from balsa wood with an exceptionally high responsivity to humidity change by chemical processing and mechanical compression. By varying the ambient humidity, the produced cellulose membranes can provide a variety of predetermined deformations, such as curve, s-like deformation and curl. The high humidity responsivity is originated from a self-maintained moisture gradient induced by an asymmetrical design of membrane surfaces, aided by the hygroscopic swelling of the cellulose. The moisture-driven actuators are then demonstrated as a three-finger gripper that can grab, hold and release objects 40 times the weight of its own. The combination of natural wood and stimuli-responsive behavior open a way to designing smart structures, actuators and soft robots with environmentally friendly, recyclable and biocompatible materials. Magnetostrictive materials are a group of smart materials with comparable properties to piezoelectric materials regarding strain and operating frequency. In contrast, the Curie temperature is much higher and the principle effect allows different actuator designs. Especially in the case of rotating actuators in ultrasonic assisted machining, a high potential is seen for a simplified energy transmission. In the study, a test stand for a rotating actuator with simultaneous vibration in longitudinal direction was designed to show the proof of principle for this idea. It was shown that the current inducing the magnetic field as well as its frequency influence the amplitude of the rotating actuator. Smart textiles based on actuator materials are of practical interest, but few types have been commercially exploited. The challenge for researchers has been to bring the concept out of the laboratory by working out how to build these smart materials on an industrial scale and permanently incorporate them into textiles. Smart textiles are considered as the next frontline for electronics. Recent developments in advance technologies have led to the appearance of wearable electronics by fabricating, miniaturizing and embedding flexible conductive materials into textiles. The combination of textiles and smart materials have contributed to the development of new capabilities in fabrics with the potential to change how athletes, patients, soldiers, first responders, and everyday consumers interact with their clothes and other textile products. Actuating textiles in particular, have the potential to provide a breakthrough to the area of smart textiles in many ways. The incorporation of actuating materials in to textiles is a striking approach as a small change in material anisotropy properties can be converted into significant performance enhancements, due to the densely interconnected structures. Herein, the most recent advances in smart materials based on actuating textiles are reviewed. The use of novel emerging twisted synthetic yarns, conducting polymers, hybrid carbon nanotube and spandex yarn actuators, as well as most of the cutting–edge polymeric actuators which are deployed as smart textiles are discussed.
