The arid endorheic basin of northwest China is characterized by rich land resources, water shortage, and a fragile ecological environment. The establishment of a credible coupling model of groundwater and surface water based on multi-source observation data is an effective means to study the change in basin water cycles and the sustainable utilization of water resources in the past and future. Based on the latest understanding of hydrogeological conditions, hydrology and water resource utilization data in the middle reaches of the Heihe River Basin (HRB), this paper constructs an up-to-date coupling model of surface water and groundwater to study the water balance change of the basin. The water resources data series under historical replay and CMIP5 climate model prediction are constructed to predict future changes in water resources. The study shows that, under the joint influence of natural conditions and human activities, the average annual recharge of groundwater in the study area from 1990 to 2020 is 17.98 × 108 m3/a, the average annual discharge is 18.62 × 108 m3/a, and the difference between recharge and discharge is −0.64 × 108 m3/a. The total groundwater storage is −19.99 × 108 m3, of which the groundwater storage from 1990 to 2001 was −17.52 × 108 m3 and from 2002 to 2020 was −2.47 × 108 m3. Abundant water from 2002 to 2020 in the basin significantly improved the loss of groundwater storage. Under the prediction of historical reappearance and the CMIP5 CNRM-CM5 model RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 pathways, the groundwater level of the Heihe River–Liyuanhe River inclined plain falls first because the HRB has just experienced a wet season and then rises according to future climate change. The groundwater level of the inclined plain east of the Heihe River and Yanchi basin decreases continuously because of the change in water cycle caused by human activities. The erosion accumulation plain is located in the groundwater discharge zone, and the water level is basically stable. Under the conditions of water resource development and utilization, the runoff of Zhengyixia hydrological station cannot meet the requirements of the "97 Water Dividing Plan" of the State Council in most years in the future, and the ecological and production water in the lower reaches of HRB cannot be effectively guaranteed. With the implementation of water-saving irrigation under the RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios, the runoff of Zhengyixia can meet the "97 Water Diversion Plan". It is suggested to further improve the level of agricultural water savings in the middle reaches of the HRB and control the reasonable scale of cultivated land in order to reduce water consumption in the middle reaches of the HRB and implement sustainable utilization of water resources in the HRB. Peatlands, as important global nitrogen (N) pools, are potential sources of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. We measured N2O flux dynamics in Hani peatland in a growing season with simulating warming and N addition for 12 years in the Changbai Mountains, Northeastern China, by using static chamber-gas chromatography. We hypothesised that warming and N addition would accelerate N2O emissions from the peatland. In a growing season, the peatland under natural conditions showed near-zero N2O fluxes and warming increased N2O emissions but N addition greatly increased N2O absorption compared with control. There was no interaction between warming and N addition on N2O fluxes. Pearson correlation analysis showed that water table depth was one of the main environmental factors affecting N2O fluxes and a positive relationship between them was observed. Our study suggests that the N2O source function in natural temperate peatlands maybe not be so significant as we expected before; warming can increase N2O emissions, but a high dose of N input may turn temperate peatlands to be strong sinks of N2O, and global change including warming and nitrogen deposition can alter N2O fluxes via its indirect effect on hydrology and vegetation in peatlands. The North China Plain faces increasing pressure on fresh water resources due to economic development and climate variations. The effects of climate variations and human activities on the groundwater system in Tianjin, Northern China, were analyzed using an autoregressive integrated moving average model. Our result showed that the groundwater dynamics were influenced by climatic factors and that human activities gradually played a dominant role in the increasing groundwater withdrawal. During the period of 1950–2010, there were no significant trends in annual and wet season precipitation based on Mann–Kendall tests at the 5% significance level. Surface air temperature significantly increased, but potential evapotranspiration and phreatic water evaporation were not significantly changed. The effect of precipitation on groundwater-level fluctuation was decreasing, and the groundwater level declines mainly resulted from the groundwater withdrawal in Tianjin. Sustainable management of groundwater resources in the North China Plain will largely hinge on sustainable management of groundwater withdrawal, especially the efficient use of water for agriculture production. • The relationship between the groundwater depth and grassland ecology was analysed; • Groundwater depth affected the composition and diversity of vegetation species; • A reasonable groundwater depth can buffer the impact of climate change on the vegetation to maintain grassland ecological stability; • The control of grassland degradation should include the potential exploitation of groundwater. Grassland degradation in the semiarid area of China is often attributed to overgrazing and expansion of irrigated agriculture without the consideration of groundwater. However, falling groundwater levels in the region have caused many problems for grassland ecology. In this paper,the typical sandy grassland- the Tongliao part of Horqin grassland was selected as the study area to study the spatial distribution of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the relationship between the NDVI and groundwater depth (GD) of each grassland pixel was studied. The temporal variation of the NDVI and its correlations with precipitation were investigated. The relationship between GD and vegetation species diversity in grassland was analyzed based on the vegetation survey. The results of the relation between GD and NDVI and vegetation species showed that GD can buffer the impact of increase in drought events on the vegetation because GD affected the composition and diversity of vegetation species. As the GD increases, the mean NDVI showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing, and basically remained unchanged when the GD was greater than 3.5 m. The species diversity of grassland decreased with increasing GD and was not related to GD when GD was greater than 3.5 ∼ 4 m. Falling groundwater levels will cause great changes in the structure of grassland; specifically, azonal vegetation will gradually die and 3.5 m may be the critical GD needed to maintain the incomplete extinction of grassland azonal vegetation in the aeolian sandy soil. Correlation analysis proved that the correlation between NDVI and precipitation was significantly enhanced when GD increased sharply from 3 m to 6 m after 1999. This research indicates that the control of grassland degradation should pay attention to controlling the groundwater exploitation to recover a reasonable groundwater level, which was found to be necessary in the support of diverse and climate resilient of vegetation. Carbon sequestration in terrestrial ecosystems plays an essential role in coping with global climate change and achieving regional carbon neutrality. In mining areas with high groundwater levels in eastern China, underground coal mining has caused severe damage to surface ecology. It is of practical significance to evaluate and predict the positive and negative effects of coal mining and land reclamation on carbon pools. This study set up three scenarios for the development of the Yanzhou coalfield (YZC) in 2030, including: (1) no mining activities (NMA); (2) no reclamation after mining (NRM); (3) mining and reclamation (MR). The probability integral model (PIM) was used to predict the subsidence caused by mining in YZC in 2030, and land use and land cover (LULC) of 2010 and 2020 were interpreted by remote sensing images. Based on the classification of land damage, the LULC of different scenarios in the future was simulated by integrating various social and natural factors. Under different scenarios, the InVEST model evaluated carbon storage and its temporal and spatial distribution characteristics. The results indicated that: (1) By 2030, YZC would have 4341.13 ha of land disturbed by coal mining activities. (2) Carbon storage in the NRM scenario would be 37,647.11 Mg lower than that in the NMA scenario, while carbon storage in the MR scenario would be 18,151.03 Mg higher than that in the NRM scenario. Significantly, the Nantun mine would reduce carbon sequestration loss by 72.29% due to reclamation measures. (3) Carbon storage has a significant positive spatial correlation, and coal mining would lead to the fragmentation of the carbon sink. The method of accounting for and predicting carbon storage proposed in this study can provide data support for mining and reclamation planning of coal mine enterprises and carbon-neutral planning of government departments. • The mean groundwater table depth in China dropped by approximately 0.2 m (P < 0.01) during 1979–2018. • The Noah-MP land model forced with reanalysis climate data can reasonably capture terrestrial water and radiation processes across China. • Incorporating the groundwater lateral flow process enhances the seasonality of modeled terrestrial water and radiation processes on a regional scale. Faced with intensified climate change and ever-increasing water demand, the groundwater table depth is vital to sustaining terrestrial environments in a country such as China; however, on a regional scale, insufficient research has been conducted on its variability thus far. Using a land model forced with reanalysis climate data, this paper investigates groundwater table depth changes across China for the 1979–2018 period. The results show a significant overall reduction in the groundwater table depth in China during the past 40 years without explicit consideration of direct human influence. There is an approximately 0.2 m decrease on average, but it is approximately 0.5 m in southern China and 0.8 m to the north of 35°N despite a 1.2 m rise in part of this region due to an increasingly wet climate and a topographic water convergence. The findings provide a first-order pattern of historical groundwater table responses to climate change, highlighting inherent links among subsurface-surface-atmosphere water cycles and worsened terrestrial water availability in China. A model evaluation compared with in situ observations has demonstrated the model's ability to realistically portray terrestrial water and energy balances on regional scales, as well as the enhancement of their seasonality with incorporated lateral groundwater flow processes. This ability gives us reasonable confidence in the simulated trends and spatial variability. Nonetheless, the mean groundwater table still shows large biases relative to observations, and the problems of human influence, two-way interactions between groundwater and surface water, and local topographical complexity have yet to be properly addressed in the present study and deserve further research.
