The main aim of this study was to define a procedure useful to evaluate the potential environmental, social and economic benefits contained in paper and cardboard (or other recyclables), which are wasted in the unsorted fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW). To give a practical example, the procedure was applied to the 550 municipalities of the Campania region, in Southern Italy, but the developed procedure is applicable in any context in an 'urban mining' perspective. The procedure consists of five phases and uses two methodologies: one for the estimation of the composition analysis of the unsorted residual waste and another for the calculation of sustainability indicators able to measure the benefits wasted in the unsorted residual MSW. Six indicators were defined: two for the environment (carbon footprint and ecological footprint), two for the society (health footprint and occupational benefits) and two for the economy (economic profit and economic saving). The first methodology was developed by the regional environmental protection agency to update the MSW regional management plan. The second methodology is based on the use of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) through which it was possible to calculate the reference parameters useful for the calculation of the impacts (i.e., loss of benefits) for recycling, mechanical and biological treatment (MBT), incineration and landfilling of paper and cardboard contained in the unsorted residual waste. The obtained results confirmed the presence of such an enormous deposit of recyclable materials contained in the unsorted residual waste, which is a potential source, but not exploited, of environmental, social and economic benefits. For instance, the paper and cardboard 'urban mine' of Naples was greater than 16 million of euro (economic profit + economic saving), with a potential saving of around 11.4 million of kgCO 2 eq. (carbon footprint), 207 million of m2 (ecological footprint), 44 Disability Adjusted Life Years (health footprint), with a creation of 30 job positions in the waste management sector (occupational benefits). The aim of this paper is to propose a novel approach in order to accurately calculate the energy and economic savings due to the use of heat metering and thermostatic valves in residential buildings. The paper aims at proving that the present simplified approaches used in European Legislation may lead to significantly underestimate the profitability of this technology. The study is developed for four different typologies of buildings located in the city of Naples (South of Italy), including their geometrical and thermophysical properties. The buildings are first modelled in Google Sketchup and subsequently linked to the TRNSYS environment, which also includes a detailed model of the piping systems. The models allow one to evaluate, for every period of the year, energy demand, energy supplied by radiators, heat gains, transmission, etc. The developed models are used to calculate energy demands for three scenarios for each type of building: centralized heating systems not equipped with heat metering; thermostatic valves without heat metering; heat metering and thermostatic valves. The possible savings related to thermostatic valves and heat metering are estimated using the developed model. The results are compared with the ones provided by the Italian Standards. Results show that the thermostatic valves adoption leads to a significant reduction, up to 50%, of the thermal energy demand of the residential buildings and that all the proposed systems exhibit a remarkable economic profitability, with a payback period lower than 1.7 years. This paper is based on a discussion developed by one of the thematic working groups at the Biennial International Workshop Advances in Energy Studies (BIWAES) 2017 hold in Naples, Italy. The topic was the role of technology in energy transition and global problems. Owing to the heterogeneity of the participants in the working group, different viewpoints were put together, leading to some shared conclusions. In particular, the role played by the different narratives used in discussing the role of technology in facing global problems was pointed out as the origin of cognitive dissonance. The presented reflections address some conceptual weaknesses in the current debate on technology and global issues, framed in global policies that appear incapable to obtain tangible results. The technology optimism seems, in fact, to be based on the elusive use of both the concepts of technology and sustainability, that are put together for narrative purposes without an explicit conceptual assessment. On one hand, the factual role of technology and its beneficiary are almost never clearly addressed in the debate. On the other hand, the fact that any new technology will serve the cause of sustainability is not questioned whatsoever, without taking into account the social, political and ethical framework in which technology is supposed to be operated. • Thematic working groups at the BIWAES 2017 Conference. • Conceptual weaknesses in the current debate on technology are addressed. • The questions "Technology for what?" and "Technology for whom?" are mandatory. • There is a strong need for a correct contextualization of technology debate. • A shared and openly-described narrative is mandatory. Abstract: This paper presents and discusses the construction of a spatial decision-support tool for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of a land use plan: the spatial coordination plan of the Province of Naples, in southern Italy. The decision-support tool organises the relevant information, spatially resolves the actions of the plan, predicts their environmental impacts, and generates overall performance maps. Its final goal is to provide a suitable technical support to a formal SEA procedure. The expected implications of the plan, such as changes in land use and traffic flows and urban expansion, were modelled and assessed against a set of environmental criteria using SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis and mapping. It was found that the SWOT analysis provided a good basis for assessment and strategy formulation. The paper also intends to contribute to the topic of data and scale issues in SEA, by exemplifying the role played by spatial data and spatial analyses to support informative SEA. The safeguard of historical heritage cannot disregard a rational assessment of the seismic vulnerability of the assets, especially in areas as Italy where high exposure and hazard may lead to significant risk. In this context, while established empirical methods based on observed damage after earthquakes are available for some constructional typologies as churches and palaces, large-scale approaches for masonry bell towers aimed at defining a vulnerability ranking for prioritisation of intervention are still missing or not sufficiently validated. In this paper, a novel simplified vulnerability model is formulated through sensitivity-informed parameter reduction of a more detailed mechanics-based assessment methodology. The framework is based on (a) a parametric representation of the bell tower, (b) a mechanical model providing a measure of collapse, (c) a vulnerability definition based on the measure of collapse. The variation ranges of the input parameters are calibrated against the results of the surveys carried out in the historical centre of Naples. A global sensitivity analysis is then used to identify the most important parameters governing the vulnerability of the structure and remove the least influential parameters. Vulnerability models based on different amount of input data are finally proposed, and their accuracy is assessed comparatively with the original mechanical model. The results show that good accuracy can be obtained by using six geometrical and typological parameters, while further increase in the quality of the prediction may be achieved with the introduction of additional information regarding materials and constructional features, which can only be acquired by means of more detailed surveys on-site. This paper focuses on the energy and economic analysis of the Building To Vehicle To Building (V2B2) concept, conducted through a comprehensive parametric and sensitivity analysis. The idea behind this novel vehicle to building energy management is to exploit the use of electric vehicles as energy vectors to exchange electricity among buildings with the aim to accelerate the development of a novel zero energy paradigm, while promoting the deployment of renewable energy sources, accelerating the widespread usage of electric vehicles, and streamlining the regulation of charging stations in our future communities. In order to evaluate the potentials of the proposed schemes, a comprehensive parametric analysis is conducted to size the design and operating parameters which maximize the self-production and self-consumption of building integrated renewable energy technologies at a cluster level. The paper investigates the energy and economic performance of different V2B2 energy management schemes including a residential building, an office building, and an electric vehicle, which feature a basic cluster of human-linked energy consumers. The study is conducted by means of a novel in-house developed dynamic simulation tool, suitably enhanced to model the system operation. Numerical results, obtained for a representative weather zone (Mediterranean climate of Naples, South-Italy), show that through the V2B2 scheme, a remarkable exploitation of off-site renewable energy production is achieved, producing a significant reduction of fossil fuel consumption from the grid. Abstract: In this paper, we present an ongoing project, named Talking Museum and developed within DATABENC - a high technology district for Cultural Heritage management. The project exploits the Internet of Things technologies in order to make objects of a museum exhibition able to “talk” during users’ visit and capable of automatically telling their story using multimedia facilities. In particular, we have deployed in the museum a particular Wireless Sensor Network that, using Bluetooth technology, is able to sense the surrounding area for detecting user devices’ presence. Once a device has been detected, the related MAC address is retrieved and a multimedia story of the closest museum objects is delivered to the related user. Eventually, proper multimedia recommendation techniques drive users towards other objects of possible interest to facilitate and make more stimulating the visit. As case of study, we show an example of Talking museum as a smart guide of sculptures’ art exhibition within the Maschio Angioino castle, in Naples (Italy). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Rainfall-induced shallow landslides occurring along slopes of mountains around the city of Naples (southern Italy), characterized by pyroclastic covers laying upon fractured limestone bedrock, pose serious threat to settlements and towns located at their foot. Although the triggering mechanism, related to suction reduction in the initially unsaturated soil cover is quite clear, there is still debate about the hydrological processes which predispose the slopes to failure. In this paper, the predisposing factors are analyzed with reference to two intense storms, both with about 300 mm rainfall, occurred in the same period of the year in 1999 and 2019. The two storms triggered several shallow landslides in an area of few km2 of the northeast-facing slopes of Partenio Mountains. The two events are compared analyzing both the characteristics of antecedent and event precipitations, as well as simulating the response of the slopes to rainfall with the help of a mathematical model. Specifically, two slopes are analyzed: one, near the town of Cervinara, where landslides were triggered only in 1999; another, near the town of San Martino Valle Caudina, where landslides occurred during both the events. The results of the model simulations indicate that rainstorm duration (shorter in 1999) and antecedent precipitation during the weeks before the event (smaller in 1999) are the main reasons of the different responses of the slopes to the two rainfall events. In fact, both drier initial conditions at the base of the soil cover and shorter storm duration limit the possibility of drainage of infiltrating water out of the soil cover through the soil-bedrock interface, thus favoring the suction reduction required for slope failure. The amelioration of air quality represents one of the most complex challenges that the European Union is facing today. Although a successful strategy to improve air quality should decisively act on pollution sources, Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) may provide a huge contribution to tackle air pollution, while delivering a wide range of Ecosystem Services and enhancing the Natural Capital. In this paper, we analyzed, in both biophysical and monetary terms, the role of the Urban Green Infrastructure (UGI) in improving air quality in the Metropolitan City of Naples (Southern Italy) by implementing an accounting model of PM 10 removal. Our findings indicate that about 1,148 Mg of PM 10 were annually removed by the UGI, for a monetary value of 36 million euros per year. We also assessed the impact of a devastating wildfire that occurred in 2017 in the study area, which resulted in a loss of PM 10 removal of about 97 Mg and led to an estimated monetary loss of 3 million euros per year. The results also showed that PM 10 removal efficiency largely varies seasonally and across different functional groups of vegetation, highlighting the role of functional biodiversity in the provision of Ecosystem Services under Mediterranean climate conditions. In conclusion, we maintain that the biophysical and economic assessment of Ecosystem Services can support local managers and policymakers in charge of developing urban planning strategies aimed at ensuring sustainable development and human well-being in metropolitan cities.
