The intensity of interannual variation of spring precipitation over southern China during 1979–2014 and possible reasons for it are investigated in this paper. There is a significant interdecadal change in the intensity of interannual variation of spring precipitation over southern China around 1995/96. The intensity of interannual variation of spring rainfall over South China is stronger during 1979–95 than that during 1996–2014. The possible reason may be the larger amplitude of the sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) in the western Pacific Ocean (WP) before 1995/96. The cooler (warmer) SSTA in WP may trigger an abnormal local anticyclone (cyclone) at lower levels. The anomalous southwesterly (northeasterly) flow at the northwestern flank of the WP anticyclone (cyclone) covers South China, transporting more (less) moisture to South China. Meanwhile, the anomalous winds converge (diverge) in South China at lower levels and diverge (converge) at upper levels, which causes the anomalous ascent (descent) to enhance (reduce) the precipitation over there. However, during 1996–2014, the intensity of interannual variation of spring rainfall over the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River valley becomes much stronger than that during 1979–95, which is related to the intensified interannual variation of the atmospheric circulation in the middle and high latitudes over Eurasia. The weak (strong) Siberian high and East Asian trough may reduce (enhance) the northerly wind from the middle and high latitudes. Numerous circulation indices have been applied in practical climate services focused on regional precipitation. It is beneficial to identify the most influential or decisive indices, but this is difficult with conventional correlation analyses because of the underlying nonlinear mechanisms for precipitation. This paper demonstrates a set of the most influential indices for July–August precipitation in North China, based on the recursive random forest (RRF) method. These decisive circulation indices include the Polar–Eurasia teleconnection, North African subtropical high ridge position, India–Burma trough, Antarctic Oscillation, Northern Hemisphere polar vortex central latitude, North Atlantic Oscillation, and western Pacific subtropical high northern boundary position. Some of these factors have been recognized as directly influential to the regional precipitation, for example, those of the northwestern Pacific subtropical high; however, some are not easily understood. Decision tree (DT) models using these indices were developed to facilitate composite analyses to explain the RRF results. Taking one of the most interesting DT rules as an example, when the North African subtropical high ridge position is sufficiently far south, an anomalous anticyclone occurs in the upstream and an anomalous cyclone in the downstream of North China. This is unfavorable for northward moisture transport in eastern China and hence causes less precipitation in North China than climatology. The present results are not only helpful for improving diagnostic models of regional precipitation, but also enlightening for exploring how global climate change could impact a region by modulating large-scale circulation patterns. The parameterization of physical processes is one of the critical elements to properly simulate the regional climate over eastern China. It is essential to conduct detailed analyses on the effect of physical parameterization schemes on regional climate simulation, to provide more reliable regional climate change information. In this paper, we evaluate the 25-year (1983-2007) summer monsoon climate characteristics of precipitation and surface air temperature by using the regional spectral model (RSM) with different physical schemes. The ensemble results using the reliability ensemble averaging (REA) method are also assessed. The result shows that the RSM model has the capacity to reproduce the spatial patterns, the variations, and the temporal tendency of surface air temperature and precipitation over eastern China. And it tends to predict better climatology characteristics over the Yangtze River basin and the South China. The impact of different physical schemes on RSM simulations is also investigated. Generally, the CLD3 cloud water prediction scheme tends to produce larger precipitation because of its overestimation of the low-level moisture. The systematic biases derived from the KF2 cumulus scheme are larger than those from the RAS scheme. The scale-selective bias correction (SSBC) method improves the simulation of the temporal and spatial characteristics of surface air temperature and precipitation and advances the circulation simulation capacity. The REA ensemble results show significant improvement in simulating temperature and precipitation distribution, which have much higher correlation coefficient and lower root mean square error. In this paper, the daily precipitation data measured at 58 meteorological stations were used, and the spatial and temporal variability of daily precipitation and precipitation extrema in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) during 1958-2007 was investigated using the indicator of discrete wavelet entropy; then, the urbanization effects were further analyzed. Results indicate that the daily precipitation variability in YRD, especially in the mid YRD with highly urbanized city clusters, is determined by the comprehensive impacts of atmospheric circulation, urbanizations, and the Taihu Lake. Compared with the results in 1958-1985, the variability of daily precipitation and precipitation extrema becomes more complex in 1986-2007, and daily precipitation variability is more complex in the mid YRD relative to the north and south. The precipitation extrema with bigger magnitudes show more complex variability. Urbanizations cause more complexity and fluctuations of daily precipitation in the mid YRD in 1986-2007, reflecting more uncertainty of daily precipitation variability, while the urbanization effects vary with regions and precipitation magnitudes. The variability of precipitation extrema with maximum values is mainly determined by natural atmospheric circulation but has little relationship with urbanizations; however, the variability of those precipitation extrema with general values is determined by both urbanizations and the Taihu Lake in YRD over the last three decades. Global warming substantially intensifies hydrologic cycles, causing increasing frequency and magnitude of catastrophic floods and droughts. Understanding the patterns and mechanisms of precipitation in historical periods is pivotal for regional disaster prevention and mitigation. Here, we analyzed the daily precipitation of six stations at the Shimantan Reservoir from 1952 to 2013 to examine precipitation characteristics at different time scales. The Mann–Kendall test, moving t-test, and Innovative Polygon Trend Analysis (IPTA) were employed to detect the trends and change points in total precipitation amount, frequency, and duration. Influences of atmospheric circulations on precipitation were then explored via cross-wavelet analysis. Our results showed increased average precipitation and decreased precipitation days annually at the Shimantan Reservoir in the past decades. Specifically, increased seasonal precipitation was only detected in summer, while precipitation days were mainly reduced in winter. There was a noticeable increasing to decreasing transition trend in precipitation from July to August, and a transition from decreasing to increasing from June to July in precipitation days. Summer rainfall was predominantly moderate and light, accompanied by shortening and highly fluctuating rainstorm durations. July exhibited the highest precipitation frequency and always experienced rainstorms. The Arctic Oscillation and East Asian summer monsoon showed positive and negative correlations, respectively, with the changes in precipitation at the Shimantan Reservoir. The reasonable and appropriate drought indicator is a crucial instrument for drought investigation and assessment, which can objectively compare the severity, duration, and frequency of drought events, so as to achieve the purpose of accurately monitoring and evaluating drought. However, a univariate drought index is often difficult to precisely describe the complex drought situation, and it is urgent to establish a multivariate comprehensive drought index to identify and reveal the drought characteristics. Based on Copula models, combined with meteorological factors precipitation and hydrological factors runoff, this paper constructed a Multivariate Standardized Drought Index (MSDI), which can characterize meteorological drought and hydrological drought simultaneously and evaluate the spatial–temporal evolution characteristics of drought over the Xijiang River Basin (XJB) in South China. The results indicated that: (1) the proposed MSDI can capture the occurrence of drought as sensitively as the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), and can represent the termination of drought as effectively as the Standardized Runoff Index (SRI), which can comprehensively depict the drought situation in the XJB, China; (2) since the 1980 s, there was a tendency of aridity with a mutation point of 1983 in the downstream of Xijiang River (DXJB), and the worst comprehensive drought occurred in 1989; (3) among the tributaries, the comprehensive drought severity was the heaviest in the DXJB, with an average MSDI value of –0.75; (4) based on the run theory and Copula model, the most serious drought event occurred from September 1988 to October 1990, with a drought severity of 33.36, a drought duration of 27 months, and a drought return period exceeding 50 years; and (5) the drought evolution was significantly influenced by abnormal atmospheric circulation factors, while ENSO had the largest influence on the drought variation in the XJB, followed by sunspot. China is a nation that is affected by a multitude of natural disasters, including droughts and floods. In this paper, the variations of extreme drought and pluvial patterns and their relations to the large-scale atmospheric circulation have been analyzed based on monthly precipitation data from 483 stations during the period 1958–2010 in China. The results show the following: (1) the extreme drought and pluvial events in China increase significantly during that period. During 1959–1966 timeframe, more droughts occur in South China and more pluvial events are found in North China (DSC-PNC pattern); as for the period 1997–2003 (PSC-DNC pattern), the situation is the opposite. (2) There are good relationships among the extreme drought and pluvial events and the Western Pacific Subtropical High, meridional atmospheric moisture flux, atmospheric moisture content, and summer precipitation. (3) A cyclone atmospheric circulation anomaly occurs in North China, followed by an obvious negative height anomaly and a southern wind anomaly at 850 hPa and 500 hPa for the DSC-PNC pattern during the summer, and a massive ascending airflow from South China extends to North China at ~50∘N. Precipitation is considered one of the most important forcing data in scientific investigations involving agriculture, water management, and climate variability. Knowledge of precipitation variation during rainy seasons is the key to the understanding of the precipitation variability under the effect of climate change. This study evaluated some rainy season features (e.g., onset, retreat, and rainy-season precipitation) over the Yellow River basin (YRB), China, and the influence of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The multi-scale moving t-test was applied to capture the onset and retreat of rainy season. The possible linkage between ENSO-induced precipitation and monsoon and atmospheric circulation was also explored. From the analysis, four conclusions can be drawn: (1) Rainy season began the earliest (latest) and ended the latest (earliest) in the southern (northern) YRB, with rainy-season precipitation increasing from northwest to southeast. (2) Rainy-season precipitation showed strong correlation to SST in Niño regions. Precipitation can reach up to 20% above the average precipitation for decaying central Pacific warming (CPW) and down to 35% below the average precipitation for developing eastern Pacific warming (EPW) in most areas of the YRB. (3) Developing El Niño showed the strongest dry signals among developing ENSO and ENSO Modoki phases. Decaying El Niño and El Niño Modoki indicated overall increasing precipitation, with La Niña and La Niña Modoki during the corresponding period showing the opposite tendency. (4) Different performances of ENSO-induced precipitation attributed to the combined influence of the monsoon from the India Ocean and the atmospheric circulation in the Western North Pacific (WNP). Stronger anti-cyclone and monsoon are related to increasing rainy-season precipitation. These findings can improve the predictability of rainy season features and ENSO-induced precipitation. During the past few decades, eastern China has experienced a summer precipitation regime shift characterized by a "southern flood‐northern drought" pattern. Among numerous studies explaining this phenomenon, few have quantified dynamic‐thermodynamic contributions at daily‐synoptic scales. Using a self‐organizing map approach, summertime daily atmospheric flows during 1961–2015 are clustered into 20 circulation patterns (CPs), each of which is assigned to an attribute among wet, dry, and neutral according to their synchronous precipitation anomalies. We find that decreases in wet CPs for the north and increases (decreases) in wet (dry) CPs for the south are robustly significant and can well explain the contrasting precipitation trends. Dynamic and thermodynamic processes jointly produce more precipitation in the south but less precipitation in the northern half of the north region, with thermodynamic contributions being 30–40% larger. Dynamic influence and its interaction with thermodynamic factors dictate the latitudinal boundary between the drying and wetting regions. Plain Language Summary: Summer precipitation in eastern China has exhibited a "southern flood‐northern drought (SFND)" pattern during the past few decades. Despite substantial literature attempting to explain the phenomenon, efforts devoted to the quantification of contributions from dynamic processes (changes in daily atmospheric circulations) and thermodynamic processes (other physical processes such as the warming‐induced increasing water vapor in the air) appear to be deficient. Using a cluster method called self‐organizing map (SOM), the daily circulations in the summers during 1961–2015 are classified into 20 circulation patterns (CPs). The 20 CPs are further assigned to a wet, dry, or neutral attribute according to their synchronous precipitation anomalies. We demonstrate that the significant declining wet CPs for the north and significant increasing wet but decreasing dry CPs for the south can well explain the negative and positive precipitation trends in the north and south, respectively. Dynamic and thermodynamic processes both produce more precipitation in the south and less precipitation in the northern half of the north region, with thermodynamic contributions being 30–40% larger. The present study investigates the interdecadal changes in the relationship between El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and midlatitude North Atlantic (MNA) sea surface temperature (SST) with northwest China (NWC) winter precipitation (WP) variability and the plausible causes. Results show that ENSO and MNA SST have weak correlations with NWC WP before the mid-1990s, whereas the connections are enhanced sharply afterward, with above (below) normal precipitation occuring when there are positive (negative) ENSO SST and negative (positive) MNA SST anomalies (SSTA). Remarkable differences are found in the atmospheric circulations. After the mid-1990s, there is a pronounced Pacific–North American–Eurasian (PNA-EU)-like pattern in the Northern Hemisphere, whereas an Arctic Oscillation–like pattern is found before the mid-1990s. The change in the relationships between NWC WP and SSTs is likely attributable to the enhanced connection between ENSO and MNA SST after the mid-1990s. It is found that ENSO and MNA SSTA can cause NWC WP variation independently through atmospheric teleconnections. In addition, significant precipitation anomalies also occur when concurrent but oppositely signed SSTs anomalies in the two regions are observed. The reinforced negative correlations between ENSO and MNA SST after the mid-1990s act in concert on NWC WP by exciting a PNA-EU-like pattern. This information would help us to better understand the physical processes of the teleconnections between NWC WP variability and the ENSO/MNA SST, in which the strength of the correlation between ENSO and MNA SST should be taken into account. The East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) intensified during the early to mid-Holocene relative to the present primarily due to orbital forcing. However, on the regional scale, changes in the monsoonal precipitation exhibit considerable spatial disparity, and the underlying mechanisms remain unresolved. In this study, the dynamic processes responsible for the difference of the EASM precipitation between the mid-Holocene and preindustrial period are systematically examined using the CMIP5 multimodel simulations. The moisture budget diagnostic identifies vertical motion as the key factor determining the cross-like precipitation pattern in East Asia. Relative to the preindustrial period, the mid-Holocene anomalous ascending motion corresponds well with the excessive precipitation over northern and southern China, and vice versa for west-central China, the Korean peninsula, Japan, and its marginal seas. In the framework of the moist static energy budget, the increased insolation and the attendant intensification of land–sea thermal contrast give rise to anomalous ascending motions, while descending motions are fundamentally forced by the decreased latitudinal insolation gradient. In particular, thermodynamic changes, namely, the reduced pole–equator temperature and humidity gradients, account for the downward motions over the northwestern Pacific. Dynamic changes, namely, the weakened westerlies, play a leading role in suppressing updrafts in west-central China. This study highlights that the orbital-scale monsoonal precipitation changes are not solely determined by local radiative forcing as repeatedly emphasized before. Temperature and precipitation extremes are the dominant causes of natural disasters. In this study, seven indices of extreme temperature and precipitation events in Gansu Province, China, were analysed for the period 1961–2017. An abrupt climate shift was recorded during 1980–1981. Thus, the study period was divided into a preshift (before the climate shift) period 1961–1980 and an aftshift (after the climate shift) period 1981–2017. Comparison of mean extreme indices for preshift and aftshift periods was performed for the purpose of exploring possible increasing/decreasing patterns. Generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution was applied spatially to fit the extreme indices with return periods up to 100 years for preshift/aftshift periods. Singular value decomposition (SVD) was adopted to investigate possible correlation between the extreme climate events and indices of large-scale atmospheric circulation. The results indicate that changes in mean and return levels between the preshift and aftshift periods vary significantly in time and space for different extreme indices. Increase in extreme temperature regarding magnitude and frequency for the aftshift period as compared with the preshift period suggests a change to a warmer and more extreme climate during recent years. Changes in precipitation extremes were different in southern and northern parts of Gansu. The precipitation extremes in the north have increased that can result in more serious floods and droughts in the future. SVD analyses revealed a complex pattern of correlation between climate extremes and indices of large-scale atmospheric circulation. Strengthening of westerlies and weakening of the south summer monsoon contribute to the complex changing patterns of precipitation extremes. Extreme precipitation (EP) is a major external agent driving various natural hazards in the Loess Plateau (LP), China. However, the characteristics of the spatiotemporal EP responsible for such hazardous situations remain poorly understood. We integrate universal multifractals with a segmentation algorithm to characterize a physically meaningful threshold for EP (EPT). Using daily data from 1961 to 2015, we investigate the spatiotemporal variation of EP over the LP. Our results indicate that (with precipitation increasing) EPTs range from 17.3 to 50.3 mm d -1 , while the mean annual EP increases from 35 to 138 mm from the northwestern to the southeastern LP. Further, historically, the EP frequency (EPF) has spatially varied from 54 to 116 d, with the highest EPF occurring in the mid-southern and southeastern LP where precipitation is much more abundant. However, EP intensities tend to be strongest in the central LP, where precipitation also tends to be scarce, and get progressively weaker as we move towards the margins (similarly to EP severity). An examination of atmospheric circulation patterns indicates that the central LP is the inland boundary with respect to the reach and impact of tropical cyclones in China, resulting in the highest EP intensities and EP severities being observed in this area. Under the control of the East Asian monsoon, precipitation from June to September accounts for 72 % of the total amount, and 91 % of the total EP events are concentrated between June and August. Further, EP events occur, on average, 11 d earlier than the wettest part of the season. These phenomena are responsible for the most serious natural hazards in the LP, especially in the central LP region. Spatiotemporally, 91.4 % of the LP has experienced a downward trend in precipitation, whereas 62.1 % of the area has experienced upward trends in the EP indices, indicating the potential risk of more serious hazardous situations. The universal multifractal approach considers the physical processes and probability distribution of precipitation, thereby providing a formal framework for spatiotemporal EP assessment at the regional scale. Understanding the changing characteristics and related mechanisms behind precipitation extremes is crucial for developing adaptive measures of water resource management as well as flood risk management. Based on daily precipitation measurement taken at 57 meteorological stations from 1960 to 2016, the variability of precipitation extremes over the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) is analyzed utilizing a Mann-Kendall trend test as well as a Hurst exponent analysis. Moreover, the climatic teleconnection that occurs from large-scale atmospheric circulation and such precipitation extremes is also investigated with the help of a wavelet coherence analysis. Results indicate that most extreme precipitation indices predominantly exhibit significant positive trends, indicating a wetting trend in the YRD over the past 61 years. Meanwhile, the contribution of precipitation of very wet days to annual total wet-day precipitation increased significantly. Furthermore, the increasing trend of precipitation extremes in the YRD is found to be attributable to the frequency and intensity, rather than to the duration of extreme precipitation events. The patterns of variation in these precipitation extremes reveal dramatic spatial heterogeneity, with extreme events concentrated primarily along the coastal plains. Overall, the YRD will likely face more severe flood risks in the foreseeable future. This is especially the case for the southern and central-western regions of the YRD. In contrast, the northern region of the YRD is forecast to become drier over time. The increasing trends in precipitation extremes for the YRD observed in this study are found to be linked closely with the positive anomalies of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation as well as the negative anomalies of the East Asian summer monsoon. Global warming experiments using three different 60 km mesh atmospheric global circulation models are studied to characterize ensemble mean future changes in monthly East Asian precipitation for June to August. During the summer, wetting and drying effects due to changes in the mean vertical motion play a key role in future precipitation changes, as does the "wet-get-wetter" effect due to increased moisture. The former processes are related adiabatically to the projected modification of 500 hPa horizontal atmospheric circulation, which is characterized by two cyclonic circulation anomalies extending over the eastern Eurasian Continent (C1) and the western North Pacific Ocean (C2) for each month. Over Japan, the western edge of C2 shifts from a region south of the Japanese Islands to northern Japan during June to August, representing a delayed northward movement or southward shift of the westerly jet over the western North Pacific in the future compared with the present-day climatology. Most regions of Japan lie within the northeasterly wind and associated downward-motion zones of C2, leading to significant uncertainties in future precipitation over Japan by the offset against the "wet-get-wetter" effect and possibly even a future decrease in precipitation. A wetter future climate is anticipated under weak subsidence or upward vertical motion zone of C2, such as western Japan in August away from C2, and the Southwest Islands of Japan in June in the C2 southwesterly wind zone. Over the eastern Eurasian Continent, C1 is distributed mainly over northeastern China in June and over central and southern China in July and August, respectively. During these months, most of the eastern regions are located within the southwesterly to southeasterly wind zone of C1, indicating wet future conditions due to enhanced upward motion. There is a well-known seesaw pattern of precipitation between the tropical western North Pacific (WNP) and the Yangtze River basin (YRB) during summer. This study identified that this out-of-phase relationship experiences a subseasonal change; that is, the relationship is strong during early summer but much weaker during mid-summer. We investigated the large-scale circulation anomalies responsible for the YRB rainfall anomalies on the subseasonal timescale. It was found that the YRB rainfall is mainly affected by the tropical circulation anomalies during early summer, i.e., the anticyclonic or cyclonic anomaly over the subtropical WNP associated with the precipitation anomalies over the tropical WNP. During mid-summer, the YRB rainfall is mainly affected by the extratropical circulation anomalies in both the lower and upper troposphere. In the lower troposphere, the northeasterly anomaly north of the YRB favors heavier rainfall over the YRB by intensifying the meridional gradient of the equivalent potential temperature over the YRB. In the upper troposphere, the meridional displacement of the Asian westerly jet and the zonally oriented teleconnection pattern along the jet also affect the YRB rainfall. The subseasonal change in the WNP-YRB precipitation relationship illustrated by this study has important implications for the subseasonalto- seasonal forecasting of the YRB rainfall. Using three models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5), we compare the direct and other effects of anthropogenic aerosols on observed and simulated annual, winter, and summer temperature changes. Three regions, namely, arid-semiarid area, humid-semiarid area, and the whole of China, are studied. The temperature changes caused by other effects of anthropogenic aerosol (OE) are calculated from the difference between the anthropogenic aerosol forcing run (AA) and the anthropogenic aerosol direct effect forcing run (DE). When the combined effects are considered, a significant area-averaged cooling rate varies in the range of −0.86 to −0.76 °C per century throughout China. Meanwhile, the isolated direct and other effects lower the temperature nationwide by −0.66 to −0.55 °C per century, and −0.31 to −0.11 °C per century, respectively. From a nonlinear perspective, the aerosol-induced temperature experiences a cooling trend, with AA having the largest cooling trend changes both annually and in the summer, while DE has the greatest reduction in the winter. Additionally, the influence of OE cannot be detected in observed annual changes over the arid-semiarid area and the whole of China, while the others are clearly detectable in all cases. AA (DE, OE) reduces the observational temperature mainly over the humid-semihumid region, where the contribution to the observed warming ranges from −515.2 % (−298.7 %, −198.9 %) to −173.6 % (−130.3 %, −66.4 %). The change structures of precipitation and precipitation intensity and rainy days are analyzed for the Pearl River Basin (from 1959 to 2009) on the basis of a suite of 24 climatic indices derived from daily precipitation data at 62 meteorological stations with the help of the Mann-Kendall test. Contributions of seasonal precipitation and precipitation intensity class to the annual precipitation are also examined using the inverse distance weighted method. The following four conclusions can be drawn: (1) although the average annual precipitation of the entire basin does not show obvious variation, the number of annual rainy days has decreased significantly in 98.3 % of the stations. These two factors result in an obvious increase in precipitation intensity at 64.5 % of the stations. (2) No clear change trend has been found for seasonal precipitation over the entire area; however, the number of rainy days in each season has decreased significantly. In particular, the number of rainy days in the entire year and in the fall season has decreased in 98.3 and 100 % of the stations, respectively. (3) Although the number of rainy days in drizzle has decreased in 83.9 % of the stations, the number of rainy days where heavy rain and extremely heavy rain occurred increased in nearly 75.8 and 82.3 % of the stations, respectively. (4) The number of rainy days in fall and winter contributes more to the change in the number of annual rainy days than the number of rainy days in spring and summer. Heavy rain and extremely heavy rain contribute more to the change in total annual precipitation than drizzle; however, they contribute less to the change in the number of annual rainy days than drizzle. The findings in this study can provide important information for formulating water resource and eco-environment management strategies in the Pearl River Basin to policymakers and stakeholders. The recent heterogeneous warming and the associated summer precipitation over eastern China are investigated in this study. In 1990-1999, there exist warming over northwestern Pacific and cooling over eastern equatorial Pacific, which can be quantified by temperature gradient index (TGI). Positive and negative cases are chosen based on TGI. In positive cases, a 'southern flood and northern drought' summer rainfall pattern dominates over eastern China. The atmospheric circulations show that associated with the southward receding of western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH), ascending motion accompanied with more water vapor exists over southern China. Furthermore, cold-warm air activity affected by weakened East Asian subtropical jet (EASJ) and strengthened East Asia polar front jet (EAPJ) may also be responsible for this rainfall anomaly pattern. In negative cases, significant positive Meiyu-like rainfall anomaly concentrated over Yangtze Huaihe River Basin (YHRB). Associated with the northward shift of WPSH, more water vapor is transported to YHRB. Additionally, the enhanced ascending motion over YHRB may be related with the northward shift of the EAPJ and westward shift of the EASJ. The results reinforce the notion that the configuration of EASJ and EAPJ in both intensity and position has large impacts on the precipitation variations over eastern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The observed winter (DJF) precipitation in Southeast China (1961-2010) is characterized by a monopole pattern of the 3-monthly Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI-3) whose interannual variability is related to the anomalies of East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) systems. Dynamic composites and linear regression analysis indicate that the intensity of EAWM and Siberia High (SH), the position of East Asian Trough (EAT), and El Niño events and sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over South China Sea (SCS) influence different regions of anomalous Southeast China winter precipitation on interannual scales. The circulation indices (EAWM index, SH index, and EAT index) mainly affect the winter precipitation in the eastern part of Southeast China. El Niño events affect the South China winter precipitation due to the anticyclone anomalies over Philippines. The effect of SCS SST anomalies on the winter precipitation is mainly in the southern part of Yangtze River. Thus, a set of circulation regimes, represented by a handful indices, provide the basis for modeling precipitation anomalies or extremes in future climate projections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early proxy-based studies suggested that there potentially occurred a 'southern drought/northern flood' (SDNF) over East China in the mid-Holocene (from roughly 7000 to 5000 years before present). In this study, we used both global and regional atmospheric circulation models to demonstrate that the SDNF-namely, the precipitation increases over North China and decreases over the the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Valley-could have taken place in the mid-Holocene. We found that the SDNF in the mid-Holocene was likely caused by the lower SST in the Pacific. The lowered SST and the higher air temperature over mainland China increased the land-sea thermal contrast and, as a result, strengthened the East Asian summer monsoon and enhanced the precipitation over North China. The precipitation climate in the larger Tian Shan region of Central Asia is described in terms of the climatological seasonal moisture fluxes and background circulation based on the ERA-40 reanalysis data and a precipitation reanalysis. The study area is partitioned into (1) the Tarim river basin, (2) bordering regions of China, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan, and (3) Northwestern China. Moisture supply to these areas is primarily due to the midlatitude westerlies with contributions from higher latitudes. In addition, moisture from the Indian Ocean is notably imported into the Tarim drainage area. Monthly interannual precipitation variability relates to the variability of hemispheric circulation patterns. Extreme precipitation above and below normal in Western China and Central Asia is analyzed using the standardized precipitation index. Related circulation composites show that, despite regional and seasonal differences, episodes of extreme and severe dryness are dominated by various upstream standing wave patterns from the North Atlantic to Central Asia. Four successive storms with freezing rain and snow blanketed South China from 10 January-2 February 2008, when the precipitation increased more than 200%-300% above the average for the corresponding period. The unusual atmospheric circulation associated with these disasters was caused by many complex physical processes, one of which was the active southern branch of currents over low latitude ocean areas which provided plenty of water vapor for South China. The ground-based GPS Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) measurements on the Tibetan Plateau, supported by the China and Japan Intergovernmental Cooperation Program (JICA), has compensated for the lack of conventional observations of atmospheric water vapor in this area and provided a good opportunity to analyze the character of the water vapor transport in the four heavy precipitation processes. It was found that the GPS stations located on the southeastern Tibetan Plateau were on the route of the water vapor transport during 25 January-29 January and 31 January-2 February when two heavy precipitation events occurred over South China. The increasing trend from the one to two days pre-observation by the GPS stations was then associated with the heavy precipitation. Precipitation during 10 January-16 January and 18 January-22 January was significantly related to the abnormal variation of the one day preobservation by the GPS stations located on the northeastern Tibetan Plateau. The stable isotopic composition of precipitation in different regions reflects climatic factors such as temperature, precipitation, moisture sources, and transport process. However, the isotopic variation in the region is usually much complicated due to the combined influences of these factors. A good understanding of climatic controls on the isotopic composition of precipitation can contribute to the study on isotopic tracer for climate and hydrology. To investigate the isotopic variation of precipitation and its climatic controls in the middle of the Tibetan Plateau, a monitoring station for stable isotope in precipitation has been established in Nagqu region, central Tibetan Plateau. We obtained 79 daily samples at Nagqu Meteorological Station in 2000. The observed δ18O in precipitation showed a distinctly seasonal pattern with higher values in spring and winter and lower values in summer, despite of individually low values in winter due to extremely low temperature. To further understand this pattern, we evaluated the influence of temperature, precipitation, moisture sources, and moisture transport process on precipitation δ18O. A multiple linear regression model represents quantitatively the dependence of precipitation δ18O on precipitation and temperature: δ18Oppt = −0.30 P − 0.11 T − 14.8 ( R2 = 0.13, n = 79, P = 0.005), which indicates δ18O values in precipitation are more dependent on precipitation amount than on temperature. In contrast, when the temperature is low enough (<2°C), δ18O values in precipitation are mainly dependent on temperature: δ18Oppt = 0.53 T − 10.2 ( R2 = 0.44, n = 19, P = 0.002). The variation of δ18O in precipitation is also closely related to moisture origins and transport trajectories. A model is set up to trace the trajectories for air masses arriving in the observed region, and the results demonstrated that humid marine air masses from the Indian Ocean generally have significantly lower δ18O values than dry continental air masses from the north or local re-evaporation. This is the second part of a study investigating the 1991 severe precipitation event over the Yangtze--Huai River valley (YHRV) in China using both observations and regional model simulations. While Part I reported on the Mei-yu front and its association with large-scale circulation, this study documents the biases associated with the treatment of the lateral boundary in the regional model. Two aspects of the biases were studied: the driving field, which provides large-scale boundary forcing, and the coupling scheme, which specifies how the forcing is adopted by the model. The former bias is defined as model uncertainty because it is not related to the model itself, while the latter bias (as well as those biases attributed to other sources) is referred to as model error. These two aspects were examined by analyzing the regional model simulations of the 1991 summer severe precipitation event over YHRV using different driving fields (ECMWF--TOGA objective analysis, ECMWF reanalysis, and NCEP--NCAR reanalysis) and coupling scheme (distribution function of the nudging coefficient and width of the buffer zone). Spectral analysis was also used to study the frequency distribution of the bias. The analyses suggest that the 200-hPa winds, 500-hPa geopotential height, and 850-hPa winds and water vapor mixing ratio, which have dominant influences on Mei-yu evolution, are sensitive to large-scale boundary forcing. In particular the 500-hPa geopotential height, and 850-hPa water vapor mixing ratio near the Tibetan Plateau and over the western Pacific Oceans are highly dependent on the driving field. On the other hand, the water vapor in the lower troposphere, wind at all levels, and precipitation pattern are much more affected by the treatment of nudging in the coupling scheme. Using composite, regular, and partial regression analyses in the six consecutive seasons from spring of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO)-/Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)-developing year through summer following the ENSO/IOD mature phase, the individual and combined impacts of El Niño and positive Indian Ocean Dipole (pIOD) on the evolution of precipitation in China are diagnosed for the period 1950–2013. It is shown that the seasonal responses of precipitation in China to El Niño and pIOD events, and their relationship with the large-scale atmospheric circulations, differ from one season to another. For the pure El Niño years, there is a seasonal reversal of precipitation over southeastern and northwestern China, with deficient precipitation occurring in these two regions before the onset of anomalous wet conditions in the developing autumn. Meanwhile, North China tends to be drier than normal in the developing seasons, but wetter than normal in the decaying seasons. For the pure pIOD events, southern China suffers a precipitation deficit (surplus) in the developing spring (summer and autumn). Furthermore, both North China and northwestern China experience excessive precipitation in the developing autumn and decaying summer. In addition, there is reduced precipitation in northeastern China during both the developing and decaying summers, whereas increased precipitation occurs in the developing autumn and decaying winter. For the combined years, southern China experiences enhanced moisture supply and suffers from increased precipitation from the developing summer through the subsequent spring, but reduced precipitation in the developing spring and decaying summer. Similar to the pure El Niño, northwestern (North) China becomes wetter than normal after the developing summer (autumn) in the combined years. Seasonal weather systems that establish prevailing winds and seasonal rainfall on a large scale largely determine insect migration patterns, especially for micro-insects with completely windborne migration. Recent studies indicated that the summer migration of the brown planthopper (BPH, Nilaparvata lugens) in eastern China is related to the strength and position of the Western Pacific Subtropical High-Pressure (WPSH) system and its associated wind and rainfall patterns. Compared with the BPH, the white-backed planthopper (WBPH, Sogatella furcifera) has a similar diet, analogous body size, and strong long-distance migration ability. Thus, the migration pattern for the WBPH can be speculated to be similar to that of the BPH. However, the migration pattern of the WBPH and how this pattern relates to climatic conditions have scarcely been described. Based on almost three decades of data (1977–2003), it was suggested that the WBPH in southern China (south of approximately 27° N) migrates into the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River after the abrupt movements of the WPSH in mid-June, similar to the BPH. By contrast, the emigration of the WBPH in southern China begins in late May. Further analysis indicated that the migration of the WBPH in late May and early June was short or unsuccessful due to heavy precipitation during the preflood season in southern China from late May to middle June. The results herein demonstrate the differences in migration patterns between two rice planthoppers in the eastern Asia migration arena.
