Background: The Journal has had a profound influence in nearly 150 years of publishing. A bibliometric analysis, which uses citation analyses to evaluate the impact of articles, can be used to identify the most impactful papers in the Journal's history.Objective: The objective was to identify and characterize the top-cited articles published in the Journal since 1920.Study Design: We used the Web of Science and Scopus databases to identify the most frequently cited articles of the Journal from 1920 through 2018. The top 100 articles from each database were included in our analysis. Articles were evaluated for several characteristics including year of publication, article type, topic, open access, and country of origin. Using the Scopus data, we performed an unadjusted categorical analysis to characterize the articles and a 2 time point analysis to compare articles before and after 1995, the median year of publication from each database list.Results: The top 100 articles from each database were included in the analysis. This included 120 total articles: 80 articles listed in both and 20 unique in each database. More than half (52%) were observational studies, 9% were RCTs, and 75% were from US authors. When the post-1995 studies were compared with the articles published before 1995, articles were more frequently cited (median 27 vs 13 citations per year, P < .001), more likely to be randomized (14.0% vs 4.8%, P = .009), and more likely to originate from international authors (33.3% vs 17.5%, P = .045).Conclusion: Slightly more than half of the top-cited papers in the Journal since 1920 were observational studies and three quarters of all papers were from US authors. Compared with top-cited papers before 1995, the Journal's top-cited papers after 1995 were more likely to be randomized and to originate from international authors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the global outbreak of infectious diseases over the years, airborne pathogen removal from the indoor environment has become a critical issue. Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) has been adopted as a strategic solution, and its implementation shows the enormous potential of inactivating airborne infectious pathogens. Despite extensive research, some critical research areas or gaps remain unidentified, while at the same time, few studies highlight the knowledge trend for UVGI air disinfection research necessary to guide investigators and practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to provide a thorough and objective analysis of UVGI research areas using bibliometric analysis. The available international standard known as the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) was followed for conducting this review. A comprehensive search covering the publication year up to December 2021 using Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and PubMed databases was conducted. Also, the selection of studies, extraction of data, and assessments of risk of bias were also carried out. The characteristics and results of selected studies in evidence graphs, pie charts, network maps, and tables were presented and discussed. A total of 210 UVGI air disinfection-related publications were identified and reviewed. Based on the keyword co-occurrence analysis, document and direct citation analysis, 112 research keywords (see Table A1), and 6 core research journals were identified. Further, the results show that 3 countries and 7 organizational collaborators are at the centre of UVGI research. Based on the clustering analysis and comprehensive analysis of the findings, the research domain was developed, which grouped UVGI research into four themes. These findings are highly important for the advancement of UVGI. This paper provides a significant contribution by showing the knowledge pattern needed to facilitate further research and applications for both academia and industry stakeholders to improve indoor air quality. Abstract: This Research Note updates our 2006 and 2009 China/USA nanotechnology and nanoscience (NN) research output comparisons. A 2009 comparison of China/USA research publication outputs showed that China is about to overtake the USA in NN research output. As predicted by the extrapolated 2009 curve, China has passed USA in NN research publication output. This transition occurred in the 2008/2009 time frame, and if the 2011 results (taken at mid-2011) hold for the full year, will become quite pronounced (~20%). When specific sub-disciplines are examined, the differences between China and USA become more pronounced. For example, the 2009 paper presented the time trend for China/USA publications in nanocomposites, an important sub-discipline of NN. The updated nanocomposites curve has increased about twice the rate of the overall NN curve, and shows no sign of abating. The USA papers lead in the numbers of citations by all metrics considered, but the Chinese papers are showing significant improvement with time. Overall, the Chinese papers are cited very modestly, but there is a core of ''heavy hitters'' that appears to be increasing substantially with time, and is increasingly making its presence known in the higher Impact Factor journals. The research into bioactive natural products originating from medicinal plants, fungi and other organisms has a long history, accumulating abundant and diverse publications. However no quantitative literature analysis has been conducted so far. Here we analyze the bibliometric data of ethnopharmacology literature and relate the semantic content to the publication and citation data so that the major research themes, contributors, and journals of different time periods could be identified and evaluated. Web of Science (WoS) was searched to identify relevant publications. The Analyze function of WoS and bibliometric software (VOSviewer) were utilized to perform the analyses. Until the end of November 2018, 59,576 publications -linked to 'ethnopharmacology' indexed by WoS, published since 1958 in more than 5600 journals, and contributed by over 20,600 institutions located in more than 200 countries/regions, were identified. The papers were published under four dominating WoS categories, namely pharmacology/pharmacy (34.4%), plant sciences (28.6%), medicinal chemistry (25.3%), and integrative complementary medicine (20.6%). India (14.6%) and China (13.2%) were dominating the publication space. The United States and Brazil also had more than 8.0% contribution each. The rest of the top ten countries/regions were mainly from Asia. There were around ten-fold more original articles (84.6%) than reviews (8.4%). Ethnopharmacological research has a consistent focus on food and plant sciences, (bio)chemistry, complementary medicine and pharmacology, with a more limited scientific acceptance in the socio-cultural sciences. Dynamic global contributions have been shifting from developed countries to economically and scientifically emerging countries in Asia, South America and the Middle East. Research on recording medicinal plant species used by traditional medicine continues, but the evaluation of specific properties or treatment effects of extracts and compounds has increased enormously.
