Simple Summary: Breast cancer is a significant cause of female cancer-related deaths in the US. Checking how severe the cancer is helps in planning treatment. Modern AI methods are good at grading cancer, but they are not used much in hospitals yet. We developed and utilized ensemble deep learning algorithms for addressing the tasks of classifying (1) breast cancer subtype and (2) breast cancer invasiveness from whole slide image (WSI) histopathology slides. The ensemble models used were based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) known for extracting distinctive features crucial for accurate classification. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive analysis of these models and the used methodology for breast cancer diagnosis tasks. Cancer diagnosis and classification are pivotal for effective patient management and treatment planning. In this study, a comprehensive approach is presented utilizing ensemble deep learning techniques to analyze breast cancer histopathology images. Our datasets were based on two widely employed datasets from different centers for two different tasks: BACH and BreakHis. Within the BACH dataset, a proposed ensemble strategy was employed, incorporating VGG16 and ResNet50 architectures to achieve precise classification of breast cancer histopathology images. Introducing a novel image patching technique to preprocess a high-resolution image facilitated a focused analysis of localized regions of interest. The annotated BACH dataset encompassed 400 WSIs across four distinct classes: Normal, Benign, In Situ Carcinoma, and Invasive Carcinoma. In addition, the proposed ensemble was used on the BreakHis dataset, utilizing VGG16, ResNet34, and ResNet50 models to classify microscopic images into eight distinct categories (four benign and four malignant). For both datasets, a five-fold cross-validation approach was employed for rigorous training and testing. Preliminary experimental results indicated a patch classification accuracy of 95.31% (for the BACH dataset) and WSI image classification accuracy of 98.43% (BreakHis). This research significantly contributes to ongoing endeavors in harnessing artificial intelligence to advance breast cancer diagnosis, potentially fostering improved patient outcomes and alleviating healthcare burdens. Colon and rectal cancers are the most common kinds of cancer globally. Colon cancer is more prevalent in men than in women. Early detection increases the likelihood of survival, and treatment significantly increases the likelihood of eradicating the disease. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) programme is an excellent source of domestic cancer statistics. SEER includes nearly 30% of the United States population, covering various races and geographic locations. The data are made public via the SEER website when a SEER limited-use data agreement form is submitted and approved. We investigate data from the SEER programme, specifically colon cancer statistics, in this study. Our objective is to create reliable colon cancer survival and conditional survival prediction algorithms. In this study, we have presented an overview of cancer diagnosis methods and the treatments used to cure cancer. This paper presents an analysis of prediction performance of multiple deep learning approaches. The performance of multiple deep learning models is thoroughly examined to discover which algorithm surpasses the others, followed by an investigation of the network's prediction accuracy. The simulation outcomes indicate that automated prediction models can predict colon cancer patient survival. In this paper we present a method for the recognition of hand- written digits and a practical implementation of this method for real-time recognition. A theoretical framework for the neural networks used to classify the handwritten digits is also presented. The classification task is performed using a Convolutional Neural Net- work (CNN). CNN is a special type of multi-layer neural network, being trained with an optimized version of the back-propagation learning algorithm. CNN is designed to recognize visual patterns directly from pixel images with minimal preprocessing, being capable to recognize patterns with extreme variability (such as handwritten characters), and with robustness to distortions and simple geometric transformations. The main contributions of this paper are related to the original methods for increasing the efficiency of the learning algorithm by preprocessing the images before the learning process and a method for increasing the precision and performance for real-time applications, by removing the non useful information from the background. Forecasts of future events are required in many activities associated with planning and operation of the components of a water resources system. For the hydrologic component, there is a need for both short term and long term forecasts of streamflow events in order to optimize the system or to plan for future expansion or reduction. This paper presents a comparison of different artificial neural networks (ANNs) algorithms for short term daily streamflow forecasting. Four different ANN algorithms, namely, backpropagation, conjugate gradient, cascade correlation, and Levenberg–Marquardt are applied to continuous streamflow data of the North Platte River in the United States. The models are verified with untrained data. The results from the different algorithms are compared with each other. Aim: To develop and validate models based on logistic regression and artificial intelligence for prognostic prediction of molar survival in periodontally affected patients. Materials and Methods: Clinical and radiographic data from four different centres across four continents (two in Europe, one in the United States, and one in China) including 515 patients and 3157 molars were collected and used to train and test different types of machine‐learning algorithms for their prognostic ability of molar loss over 10 years. The following models were trained: logistic regression, support vector machine, K‐nearest neighbours, decision tree, random forest, artificial neural network, gradient boosting, and naive Bayes. In addition, different models were aggregated by means of the ensembled stacking method. The primary outcome of the study was related to the prediction of overall molar loss (MLO) in patients after active periodontal treatment. Results: The general performance in the external validation settings (aggregating three cohorts) revealed that the ensembled model, which combined neural network and logistic regression, showed the best performance among the different models for the prediction of MLO with an area under the curve (AUC) = 0.726. The neural network model showed the best AUC of 0.724 for the prediction of periodontitis‐related molar loss. In addition, the ensembled model showed the best calibration performance. Conclusions: Through a multi‐centre collaboration, both prognostic models for the prediction of molar loss were developed and externally validated. The ensembled model showed the best performance in terms of both discrimination and validation, and it is made freely available to clinicians for widespread use in clinical practice. Accurate in-vivo optical characterization of colorectal polyps is key to select the optimal treatment regimen during colonoscopy. However, reported accuracies vary widely among endoscopists. We developed a novel intelligent medical device able to seamlessly operate in real-time using conventional white light (WL) endoscopy video stream without virtual chromoendoscopy (blue light, BL). In this work, we evaluated the standalone performance of this computer-aided diagnosis device (CADx) on a prospectively acquired dataset of unaltered colonoscopy videos. An international group of endoscopists performed optical characterization of each polyp acquired in a prospective study, blinded to both histology and CADx result, by means of an online platform enabling careful video assessment. Colorectal polyps were categorized by reviewers, subdivided into 10 experts and 11 non-experts endoscopists, and by the CADx as either "adenoma" or "non-adenoma". A total of 513 polyps from 165 patients were assessed. CADx accuracy in WL was found comparable to the accuracy of expert endoscopists (CADxWL/Exp; OR 1.211 [0.766–1.915]) using histopathology as the reference standard. Moreover, CADx accuracy in WL was found superior to the accuracy of non-expert endoscopists (CADxWL/NonExp; OR 1.875 [1.191–2.953]), and CADx accuracy in BL was found comparable to it (CADxBL/CADxWL; OR 0.886 [0.612–1.282]). The proposed intelligent device shows the potential to support non-expert endoscopists in systematically reaching the performances of expert endoscopists in optical characterization. Knowledge embedded within artificial neural networks (ANNs) is distributed over the connections and weights of neurons. So, the user considers ANN as a black box system. There are many researches investigating the area of rule extraction by ANNs. In this paper, a dynamic cell structure (DCS) neural network and a modified version of LERX algorithm are used for rule extraction. On the other hand, intrusion detection system (IDS) is known as a critical technology to secure computer networks. So, the proposed algorithm is used to develop IDS and classify the patterns of intrusion. To compare the performance of the proposed system with other machine learning algorithms, multi-layer perceptron (MLP) with output weight optimization-hidden weight optimization (OWO-HWO) training algorithm is employed with selected inputs based on the results of a feature relevance analysis. Empirical results show the superior performance of the IDS based on rule extraction from DCS, in recognizing hard-detectable attack categories, e.g. userto- root (U2R) and also offering competitive false alarm rate (FAR). Although, MLP with 25 selected input features, instead of 41 standard features introduced by knowledge discovery and data mining group (KDD), performs better in terms of detection rate (DR) and cost per example (CPE) when compared with some other machine learning methods, as well. Abstract: This study presents an adaptive intelligent algorithm for forecasting gasoline demand based of artificial neural network (ANN), conventional regression and design of experiment (DOE). To show the superiority and applicability of the proposed algorithm it has been applied for monthly demand estimation of gasoline in Japan, USA, Kuwait, Canada and Iran within 1992–2005. The economic indicators used in this paper are price, GDP (Gross Domestic Production), population, number of vehicles, gasoline demand in the last periods and correlation coefficient between variables. The proposed algorithm may be used to estimate gasoline demand in the future by optimizing parameter values. The proposed algorithm uses ANOVA to select either ANN or regression for future demand estimation. Furthermore, if the null hypothesis in ANOVA and F-test is rejected, the Duncan method is used to identify which model is closer to actual data at α level of significance. Neural network is an intelligent, adaptive and optimizing method for solving the complicated problems. The results show that ANN provides far less error than regression. Moreover, the proposed algorithm provides near optimal solution for gasoline demand estimation due to its flexibility and intelligibility. LiF:Mg,Cu,P is starting to replace LiF:Mg,Ti in a variety of personnel dosimetry applications. LiF:Mg,Cu,P has superior characteristics as compared to LiF:Mg,Ti including, higher sensitivity, improved energy response for photons, lack of supralinearity and insignificant fading. The use of LiF:Mg,Cu,P in large scale dosimetry programs is of particular interest due to the extreme sensitivity of this material to the maximum readout temperature, and the variety of different dosimetry aspects and details that must be considered for a successful implementation in routine dosimetry. Here we discuss and explain the various aspects of large scale LiF:Mg,Cu,P based dosimetry programs including the properties of the TL material, new generation of TLD readers, calibration methodologies, a new generation of dose calculation algorithms based on the use of artificial neural networks and the overall uncertainty of the dose measurement. The United States Navy (USN) will be the first US dosimetry processor who will use this new material for routine applications. Until June 2002, the Navy used two types of thermoluminescent materials for personnel dosimetry, CaF2:Mn and LiF:Mg,Ti. A program to' upgrade the system and to implement LiF:Mg,Cu,P, started in the mid 1990s and was recently concluded. In 2002, the new system replaced the LiF:Mg,Ti and is scheduled to start replacing the CaF2:Mn system in 2006. A pilot study to determine the dosimetric performance of the new LiF:Mg,Cu,P based dosimetry system was recently completed, and the results show the new system to be as good or better than the current system in all areas tested. Protein domains are the structural and functional units of proteins. The ability to parse protein chains into different domains is important for protein classification and for understanding protein structure, function, and evolution. Here we use machine learning algorithms, in the form of recursive neural networks, to develop a protein domain predictor called DOMpro. DOMpro predicts protein domains using a combination of evolutionary information in the form of profiles, predicted secondary structure, and predicted relative solvent accessibility. DOMpro is trained and tested on a curated dataset derived from the CATH database. DOMpro correctly predicts the number of domains for 69% of the combined dataset of single and multi-domain chains. DOMpro achieves a sensitivity of 76% and specificity of 85% with respect to the single-domain proteins and sensitivity of 59% and specificity of 38% with respect to the two-domain proteins. DOMpro also achieved a sensitivity and specificity of 71% and 71% respectively in the Critical Assessment of Fully Automated Structure Prediction 4 (CAFASP-4) (Fisher et al., 1999; Saini and Fischer, 2005) and was ranked among the top ab initio domain predictors. This study examines the potential of a neural network (NN) model, whose inputs and structure are automatically selected by means of a genetic algorithm (GA), for the prediction of corporate failure using information drawn from financial statements. The results of this model are compared with those of a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) model. Data from a matched sample of 178 publicly quoted, failed and non-failed, US firms, drawn from the period 1991 to 2000 is used to train and test the models. The best evolved neural network correctly classified 86.7 (76.6)% of the firms in the training set, one (three) year(s) prior to failure, and 80.7 (66.0)% in the out-of-sample validation set. The LDA model correctly categorised 81.7 (75.0)% and 76.0 (64.7)% respectively. The results provide support for a hypothesis that corporate failure can be anticipated, and that a hybrid GA/NN model can outperform an LDA model in this domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
