Few papers achieve the success of DiMaggio and Powell's 1983 "The Iron Cage Revisited: Institutional Isomorphism and Collective Rationality in Organizational Fields." The impact of the paper, as indicated by its citation count and its influence on a wide range of disciplines, has been extraordinary. Furthermore, the paper's influence continues to increase. Here we celebrate this exceptional paper and offer observations on how ideas become adopted, institutionalized, and sometimes translated in ways not necessarily intended by their authors. Communication of scientific findings is fundamental to scholarly discourse. In this article, we show that academic review articles, a quintessential form of interpretive scholarly output, perform curatorial work that substantially transforms the research communities they aim to summarize. Using a corpus of millions of journal articles, we analyze the consequences of review articles for the publications they cite, focusing on citation and co-citation as indicators of scholarly attention. Our analysis shows that, on the one hand, papers cited by formal review articles generally experience a dramatic loss in future citations. Typically, the review gets cited instead of the specific articles mentioned in the review. On the other hand, reviews curate, synthesize, and simplify the literature concerning a research topic. Most reviews identify distinct clusters of work and highlight exemplary bridges that integrate the topic as a whole. These bridging works, in addition to the review, become a shorthand characterization of the topic going forward and receive disproportionate attention. In this manner, formal reviews perform creative destruction so as to render increasingly expansive and redundant bodies of knowledge distinct and comprehensible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background . Processes of communication that guide decision making among clinicians collaboratively caring for complex patients are poorly understood and vary based on local contexts. In this paper, the authors characterize these processes and propose a wiki-style communication model to improve coordination of decision making among clinicians using an integrated electronic health record (EHR). Methods. A narrative review of current patterns of communication among clinicians sharing medical decisions focusing on the emerging and potential roles of EHRs to enhance communication among clinicians caring for complex patients.Results. The authors present the taxonomy of decision making and communication among clinicians caring for complex patients. They then adapt wiki-style communication to propose a novel model of communication among clinicians for decision making within multidisciplinary disease management programs. Future innovations using wiki-style communication among clinicians are also described and placed in the context of medical decisions by clinicians working together in disease management programs.Conclusions . EHR-based wiki-style applications may have the potential to improve communication and care coordination among clinicians caring for complex patients. Global literature is ever-growing and physicians rely on it for evidence-based decision making. Review articles summarize available literature and provide the current state of knowledge on a given topic. Various review types exist, the main ones being narrative and systematic reviews. The former are based on studies selected in an undefined manner. They express the authors' opinions of a given topic, lack a systematic search, and are prone to bias. By contrast, the latter represent an unbiased synthesis of knowledge on a particular topic and attempt to offer all relevant evidence. A systematic review may include a meta-analysis, which combines the results of quantitative studies using statistical techniques to provide a more precise summary of the evidence. With a dramatic increase in literature complexity, new "next-generation" types of reviews emerged to improve the quality of evidence synthesis: network meta-analysis, umbrella review, and meta-analysis of individual patient data, among others. Finally, scoping reviews are a special type, conducted as precursors to systematic reviews aiming to reveal specific knowledge gaps in a given subject. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The author said that the review of Donald F. Moores is a thoughtful review by an able professional. This article provides an analysis of the application software Photoshop with a specific focus on how reviews serve as sites for mediating its cultural subjectivities. The first sections develop a conceptual framework for the research based on mediation theory followed by a more detailed discussion of how tracing Photoshop’s cultural biography can be used to analyze its mediation in a way that recognizes its status as part of technological processes and social contexts. The later sections apply this framework with a specific focus on Photoshop upgrades and how they are reviewed in magazine articles and newsgroups over the course of nearly 20 years. This review article covers the historical development of ceramics, from the beginnings to the present. Feldspar based ceramic biomaterials for veneering metal frameworks, which are based on the jacket porcelain crown, have firmly established themselves in restorative dentistry since the 1970s. Currently, the development of restorative dental materials that can be used to replace metal represents a major challenge. As a result, this review will focus on the latest materials in this field. These materials include glass ceramics as well as high performance sintered ceramics. Glass ceramics exhibit more favourable optical properties, such as translucency and colour, compared with high performance ceramics, while the latter demonstrate high flexural strength and toughness. Both groups of materials have specialised applications in restorative dentistry and are capable of covering all the indications of dental restorations. The two types of materials, that is, glass ceramics and ceramics, have to be processed in accordance with their properties. As a result, the processing techniques, such as moulding, sintering and machining, will be discussed in detail in addition to the properties of the materials. Additional development possibilities for the materials will be presented on the basis of customer/patient needs and the successful long term use of glass ceramics and ceramics. In this context, it is clear that high performance ceramics and layered composites (consisting of high performance ceramics veneered with glass ceramics) offer the best possible solution for indications in the posterior region of the mouth. In contrast, glass ceramics are used to fabricate inlays and onlays for all parts of the jaw. Two complementary techniques for the characterisation of the fine scale microstructure of materials are briefly described: three-dimensional atom probe (3-DAP) analysis and energy filtered transmission electron microscopy (EFTEM). The 3-DAP is especially suited for the characterisation of clustering and of the chemistry and size of very small precipitates, in particular when several phases are present. Energy filtered transmission electron microscopy is useful for determining size, volume fraction and number density of precipitates in the approximate size range 20–200 nm, also when several phases are present. As examples of the usefulness of a combination of these techniques, results from two types of complex martensitic steels are reviewed: the sequence of precipitation in a high strength maraging steel, Nanoflex, and the microstructure of creep resistant 9–12%Cr steels. Modelling has now become a routine part of materials science. It is appropriate therefore to assess some of the successes and failures of the method and to understand how and if modelling differs from ordinary quantitative science. The subject is now sufficiently mature to bear some constructive self-criticism and to temper exaggerated claims. Philip Mirowski's recent book Machine Dreams: Economics Becomes a Cyborg Science continues to receive many reviews. Judging by recent reviews, this is a very controversial book. The question considered here is, how can one fairly review a controversial book—particularly when the book is widely popular and, for a history of economic thought book, a best seller? By simplifying communication, the Internet is causing significant, broad changes. This article describes some effects of the Internet on teaching and research: the use of Web pages in teaching, spread of remote statistical analysis, eliminating journal page constraints, and the impact on activities that benefit from debate and discussion. It describes how congestion on the Internet fosters change in pricing and priorities. The article ends by pointing out that although the technical implications of an innovation are predictable, the major social implications often do not become apparent for years.
